Turn your New Year’s Resolution into aNew Lifestyle at the Renaud Spirit Center

As we kick off the New Year, manyof us have made a resolution to“lose weight,” “get in shape,” or

“exercise more.” Unfortunately, resolu-tions like these usually last only a fewweeks because they are supported by faddiets or unrealistic workout schedulesthat you just cannot stick with in thelong-term.

This year, make your resolution morethan just a resolution – make it alifestyle change. Diets and ridiculousworkout schedules may show short-termresults, but as the days go on, our bodiesrebel against them. We start cravingthose things that we are denying or that“day off ” becomes two weeks or evenmonths off. Next thing you know, you’ve gained all the weight back andthen some.

The key to a successful new year’s res-olution can’t be found in the latest bookin the supermarket aisle or in some latenight infomercial, and it definitely can-not be found in a pill. It’s found inlearning how to eat, exercise and findingthe right balance in your life.

If you can make real life changes, you’ll find that the changes will be moregradual, but far more effective and morepermanent. And, rather than seeing yourbody rebel against your new choices, your body will begin to crave thosethings that are good for you. You’ll lookforward to your workout, and you’llcrave an apple for a snack, rather than ahandful of potato chips. When that hap-pens, you’ll know your resolution hasturned into a real life-style change.

Learn how you can make 2014 yourhealthiest year ever. Contact the RenaudSpirit Center at 636-474-2732 to set upa session with one of our personal train-ers. Our trainers will help guide you onthe path to a healthy lifestyle and makesure that your new year’s resolutionhelps build a new you!

At age 18, I saw aposter of a majes-tic looking eagle,

wings spread, a mountainrange behind and a bot-tom caption ... “All Americans are bornfree but many sell their liberty cheap. Forthose who don’t, the Eagle is their sym-bol.”

Eagle watchers are best served bycruising 14 areas along the Mississippiand Illinois rivers from the Chain ofRocks bridge to a point a little north ofLouisiana, Missouri. You’ll want towear layered clothing accentedwith binoculars.

Plan your viewing time to accommo-date the eagles feeding schedules, usuallybetween the hours of sunrise and 11 AM.Be sure to look for what veteran eaglewatchers call “baseballs in the trees” (dueto the eagles white head),

Bring an extra dose of patience.Eagles move about in their own time. Also, new eagle watchers should be awareof the Eagle Protection Act in combina-tion with the Criminal FinesImprovement Act of 1987 prohibitingpossession of anything eagle, from a deadbody to a mere feather. Instead, just lis-ten for the shrill, high pitched, twitteringcry eagles make and be happy with view-

ing or picture taking. Photo enthusi-asts are encouraged to use a tripod,

telephoto lens and a film ratingof 400 ASA, or the equivalentwith a digital camera.

Eagles can also beviewed 363 days a year, 8 to 5at the World Bird Sanctuary

in Valley Park, Missouri as wellas the Alton Visitor’s Center inAlton, Illinois.

The New Year inspires us all tomake big plans for better fit-ness. Most New Year’s resolu-

tions focus on weight loss andhealth-related improvements, yet onaverage only 20% of us are able tomake good on our promises to our-selves.

Maybe we try to change toomuch in our routines too quickly, ormaybe we just expect too much. Butwhatever the reasons, we all knowhow difficult it is to maintain a fitnessstrategy beyond the first month ortwo of our yearly resolutions.

This year, consider making just afew simple changes in your normalroutine. Little changes add up tonoticeable improvements in bothyour attitude about fitness and theway you feel about your body.

Whether you want to lose a fewpounds or just develop better healthhabits, here are some tips that mayhelp. Many you’ve heard before, butif you incorporate only two or threeinto your routine you will be makinga positive change.

1TAKE THE STAIRSI take the elevator even whenit’s just a floor or two, and I’m

not alone. Only about 6% of peopleuse the stairs in public buildings. It’sa habit I’m going to break this year.Look for the stairway and make a

conscious effort to use it wheneveryou can.

2Lose the TV!According to a study publishedby the Annals of Behavioral

Medicine, people who lost at least10% of their body weight and kept itoff for five years or more had fewerTV’s in their homes than overweightpeople. (Maybe we could just moveour TV’s around every day for exer-cise?)

3(see TV suggestions)Vacuuming burns 105 caloriesin a half-hour. Dusting burns

75 and shoveling snow uses 105.Remote control clicking? None.

Put on some music and embar-rass your kids by moving and groov-ing as you do your housework.

If you want to see how manycalories you burn according to yourweight and what types of activitiesyou do, go to www.healthstatus.comand use their “Calories BurnedCalculator”.

4Walk 300 Steps a DayI wouldn’t recommend count-ing aloud; you can get a

pedometer. Park far away fromstore entrances and you’ll also elimi-nate the stress of losing your car inthe lot. It’ll be the one waaayyy outthere. Take walks –even short ones–and know you’re doing somethinggood for yourself.

5Keep Moving at WorkIf you have a desk job, youdon’t have to stay idle. Move

your legs back and forth while you’resitting or tap your toes. Make it ahabit to stretch often; get up and

move around when you can.Consider a short walk around theparking lot or building during lunch.

6Always Stay Cool!Being a bit chilly can helpburn calories. And being too

warm leads to naps. Go outside andmove around in the cooler air. Stayactive regardless of the temperature.

7Give Yourself a BreakIf you’re like me, you’re tempt-ed to give up when you falter

in your plans to be healthier. Thatlarge order of Wendy’s fries, whiledelicious, won’t help you get back ontrack.

Know that you’ll stray from yourresolutions, and wake up each dayready to try again. Habits take timeto develop, and nobody’s perfect.

2014 can be the year you makesome small changes toward a better, healthier lifestyle. Make your resolu-tions ones you can truly keep, andkeep working toward your goals.

RESOLVE to Be FIT in 2014!Turning Small Changes into Good Habits

1 T/O Jan-Feb 2013 Main 12/26/13 10:14 AM Page 24

Page 25: Timeoffwebjan2014

Valentine’s Day seems tobe increasingly aboutspending money ondining out at expensive

restaurants, fancy chocolates inheart shaped boxes, a dozen ormore red roses, or other expensivegifts, as well as a fancy card. Theoriginal intent of the holiday is tosay “I Love You”, not to spend aton of money. So this year howabout giving a gift from the heartthat doesn’t break the budget, yetstill says “I Love You”.

Perhaps one or more of theseideas will work for you, orspark an idea of your own:

1Leave “Love Notes” all over. Writeup lots of notes (pink sticky noteswould work well) that tell your

Valentine why you love them. The rea-sons could be romantic, amusing, orboth. Stick in various locations, such asthe bathroom mirror, a coat pocket, thesock drawer, the refrigerator, steeringwheel of the car ... you get the idea.

2Instead of buying a dozen red roses, how about one single red rose in asimple vase. Tie a bow around the

vase and attach a love note or poem. Therose doesn’t have to be fresh. A beautifulceramic, glass or lovely silk rose is longlasting - symbolizing your lasting love.

3Make up a basket filled with para-phernalia for a romantic evening athome: candles, hot chocolate mix

and mugs, or wine and wineglasses, romantic CDs, and some snacks. If youhave a fireplace, make a fire (or turn onthe gas logs!). If not, set out a profusionof candles. Put on your romantic music inthe background ... and just relax andenjoy.

4If snuggling in front of the fireplaceisn’t your thing, then perhapswatching a romantic movie is more

your style. Your basket could containpopcorn and other snacks, liquid refresh-ment, and a few movies. If you don’t havesome favorites on hand, go to the libraryand pick out some DVDs.

5Rather than giving the traditionalchocolates in a heart shaped box, make your own Valentine Sweets

gift. Buy a large mug, bowl or trinket boxin pink, red or white and fill it withHershey Hugs and Kisses. This is surelyan inexpensive, romantic and deliciousgift.

6Make a handmade Valentine’s Daycard with a note inside with all thethings you love about your

Valentine.

7Bring out old photo albums andspend the evening reliving specialevents in your life. If you don’t have

an album, make this the year to start one,and then add to it each year. Begin a tra-dition to look at it every Valentine’s Day.

8Here is a bit of a twist on the “LoveCoupons Booklet” that many peoplelike to make. Make the coupons,

but don’t put them into a book. Insteaddecorate or even laminate each couponand place them around the house. Thenleave a trail of Hershey Kisses and Hugsfrom one coupon to the next. Decorate asmall bucket for your Valentine to placethe candy and coupons in while collectingthem.

9Shop thrift stores Mom’s FamilyResale is the place to explore. Youcan get wine glasses, mugs, trinket

boxes, heart shaped pillows, baskets, photo albums, vases, silk flowers, andmore at budget friendly prices. They willalso help you put together gift baskets tomatch your budget, starting at $5.

10Spend time as a family. Spendthe day playing games, makingValentine’s cookies or cup-

cakes, or check out books from the locallibrary. Check outwww.amazingmoms.com for a great list ofcreative easy games. Discoveroyour city.

11Spend the day visiting locallandmarks and museums. Orspend the day outside and go

ice skating. Carry a thermos of hot choco-late and a box of home-made cookies.

12Of course if your budget doesallow a night out, then consid-er one of these favorite restau-

rants- Aggie's Closet & Tea Room, MissAimee B’s, Rendezvous, Magpie’s orFratelli’s. Miss Aimee B’s is serving a 4-course Valentine Dinner on Friday &Saturday, February 14-15, featuring a fourcourse gourmet dinner. You can always dolunch instead of dinner to save dollars. Orjust go out for coffee and desssert.
