Why should be learn about timelines?

Who is older, someone born in 1760 BCE or someone born in 1450 BCE?

How many years difference is there between 250 BCE and 264 BCE?

How many years difference is there between 1436 BCE and 1524 CE?

You visit a cemetery and one of the tombstones reads, “ Born in the 15th century, died in the 16th century.” Make up possible dates that this person may have been born and died.

A timeline is an actual picture of events that happened in history. The events depicted on a timeline are in chronological order. Timelines can be LINEAR or COMPARATIVE.

Arranged in order of occurrence; so a story may be chronological, in which case it relates events in the sequence they occurred;

BC and AD relate all dates to the birth of Jesus. Referring to Jesus Christ - using dates that are based

on the birth of Jesus - which are part of the Christian Religion. However, this was seen as

offensive to non-Christians, so, historians developed new terms to

date events.

BIRTH OF CHRIST

AD1 Alleged date of the birth of Jesus Christ. Calendar dates back from here (BC: Before

Christ) and forward from here. c. 4 B.C. birth of Jesus

c. 6 BC – Suggested birth (earliest)

The Gospels are problematic, because they offer two accounts that chronologists find incompatible. Matthew states that Jesus was born while Herod the Great was still alive and that Herod ordered the slaughter of infants two years old and younger (Matt. 2:16), and based on the date of Herod's death in 4 BC (contra Dionysius Exiguus), many chronologists conclude that the year 6 BC is the most likely year of Jesus' birth. Consequently, Jesus would have been about four to six years old in the year AD 1. 

On the other hand, Luke's account places Jesus' birth during a census conducted under the governorship of Quirinius, who, according to Josephus, conducted a census in AD 6. In order to reconcile the two Gospel accounts, some have suggested that Josephus was mistaken or that Quirinius had a separate period of rule under Herod. In any case, the actual date of his birth remains historically unverifiable. 

In recent years, East Asian historians have attempted to match the birth of Jesus with special events in their history. They found that, according to the oldest record of the Comet Halley during the Han Dynasty, "The comet heads east with its tail pointing west at night, and was appearing in the sky for more than 70 days". in 6 BC. This has been suggested as an independent record of the "Star" described in Matthew 2. If accepted, this suggestion would place the birthday of Jesus in summer rather than winter.

B.C.E. -BEFORE THE COMMON ERA

C.E. - COMMON ERA/CHRISTIAN ERA

Since many non-Christians have come to use this calendar, an alternative notation "C.E." is

sometimes used. It is presently uncertain what the original

meaning of this abbreviation was, although today it is taken to mean either the Common Era or

the Christian Era: many references cite both. 

Often, the letter “C” will appear before the date on a time line. This “c” stands for

the word circa which means “around”. This

notation is used when the exact date is not known.

A century is one hundred of something, usually one hundred

consecutive years

If people lived in the 1st century, they lived between the

year 0 – 99.

If they lived in the 2nd century, they would have lived between

the years 100 -199.

When an event is said to have happened in the 6th century (or even the 6th century BCE), the years in which the event could

have occurred are between 500 – 599 (or 500 – 599 BCE).

For example: Buddha was born in 563 BCE, which would mean

he was born in the 6th century BCE.

up (get larger) the farther you move to the right.
