Welcome back to School for 2017! The year we will physically change!

Pictured above: excavation begins in preparation for the new Year 7-12 building. Our future is exciting with our current P-12 school about to embark on its biggest capital works since 1948. Over the next 18 months $5.2m will be injected into our school including a brand new Secondary (Year 7-12) building as well as significant refurbishments to existing buildings to support our Primary students and Specialist Subject Programs. The significant refurbishments will include a new cafeteria, commercial kitchen, Year P-2 Learning Area, Year 3-4 Learning area, Year 5-6 Learning Area, and a newly designed woodwork area.To view these plans in detail please visit: http://www.timboonp12.vic.edu.au/

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to staff and students and a particular welcome to new families. Congratulations to our 2016 VCE/VCAL students who are now beginning the process of starting tertiary education or entering the work force. We have students beginning apprenticeships and courses in a diverse range of areas ranging from Biomedical Science to Professional Writing. Well done to all our past students and all the best in your new vocation. Congratulations to all P-12 students on their excellent start! It is important that students begin the year organised and demonstrate commitment from the start. I encourage all students to set their personal goals for 2017 and put in place habits that will enable them to achieve success. These habits can only emerge and develop through support by individual families working with staff to enable the best outcomes for their children. In 2017 one of my main goals is to build trust with our school community. It is important that the interactions we have with all school community members build relational trust. In the coming weeks I will begin to release the new school Mission & Vision Statement. This process will provide the clear expectations we need to achieve together as a school community to achieve success.

I would like to welcome new and returning staff in 2017:

Ashlee Holmes will be teaching Year 4 (pictured above)

Angela Smith will be teaching LOTE Japanese (pictured above)

Kevin Tesselaar is our new School Grounds/Maintenance Assistant

Lisa Kensit has returned from extended leave and will be teaching Year 7-10 English.

There are a number of important events coming up in the next few weeks. Some of these include the Year 12 Study Camp which is a valuable exercise to enable Year 12 students to focus on the rigorous year ahead. On Wednesday all Year 12 students and their parents attended a pathway interview with senior staff. This process is designed to provide clarity and focus for 2017. Our P-6 Swimming program begins today. Our first Sporting event for the year for our 7-12 students kicks off with the Swimming Sports next Wednesday 8th of February (We would like to see lots of family and friends there supporting their children.)

To find out more information about the Bring Your Own Device program visit the school web page. The take up of this initiative has been surprisingly high, however it is not compulsory. It is an option we make available to students. Each year we charge a $20 connection fee which is excellent value for money as it provides continuous, ongoing technical support to ensure devices can access our school network. A reminder that laptops or netbooks are preferred in years 7-12. Students in year levels will be instructed on how to complete this process.

Parents are advised that if students bring valuables to school, they do so at their own risk, as the Department of Education has no insurance for the loss or damage of student-owned goods. Nor does the Department of Education have accident insurance in the event that a student is injured at school or while on camps or excursions.

Student accounts: payment plans are available, please see Nicki Stockings if you require assistance with options.

Sun Smart: Over exposure to the sun during childhood and adolescence is known to be a major cause of skin cancer. UV levels are higher during the summer than during winter months. UV levels do vary from day to day, and a high UV day in April or October may be more damaging than a day of heavy cloud in January. Students are encouraged to wear broad brimmed hats or seek shaded areas during recess, lunchtime and outdoor activities during Terms 1 and 4. Students are not allowed to play on the ovals unless they have a broad brimmed hat. A newly introduced Year 7-12 peak cap has been introduced this year to support lunchtime and sporting activities.

Lockers: All students are provided with an individual locker. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep your locker neat and tidy. Students are expected to use a school lock to ensure the safety of their belongings.

Uniform: School uniform is compulsory and is to be worn on all occasions, including excursions and sporting occasions, unless approved by the Principal and noted on the parent information sheet (Correct school uniform is explained in detail on page 8 in the school diary). If a student is out of uniform, they must bring a note, signed by their parent/guardians which indicates what item of uniform is not being worn, reasons for this and the dates to which the student will be out of uniform.

Mobile Phones- Reminders

2.4 7-12 Students are permitted to bring personal mobile phones to school. They must be left in their locker unless directed by a teacher. Prep-6 students must seek approval of the Principal class to have a phone at school, which will be stored for the day in the Assistant Principal’s officeThe School does not take responsibility for mobile phones that are brought to school by students.2.5 If a student has a specific need to use a mobile phone at school they must receive permission from a member of the Principal class. Permission must be sought by the student’s parent/legal guardian who will outline the health, safety or personal reasons that justify the student operating the phone.2.6 If a student is found to be using a mobile phone inappropriately it will be confiscated and kept in the main office for retrieval by a parent or guardian. 2.7 A member of the Principal class may revoke a student’s privilege of using and bringing a mobile phone to school. If you wish to contact your child at school, please do so through the general office.

School procedures for the bushfire season

Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.

Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.

Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days’ notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter. A Code Red day will be determined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.

Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of improvements in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:

No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.

After School activities will also be cancelled on these days

School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.

As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.

Depending on which Bureau of Meteorology district is impacted bus route cancellations may affect our school.

On these Code Red days, families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home or in the care of older children.

For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advises that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.

As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan.

What can parents do?

Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alternative care arrangements in the event that our school is closed.

Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone numbers. Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters, checking our website http://www.timboonp12.vic.edu.au/ and school Facebook page. Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re

planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.

If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.

You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Department of Education and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx

For up-to-date information on this year’s fire season, visit the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the 24-hour Victorian Bushfires Information Line on 1800 240 667.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

Welcome back to all students and families across the school. It has been fantastic to see so many kids back in class and engaging from the start of the year. Some key successes already this week have been seeing the Year 7 and 12 students starting very important years for them. Across the remaining year levels we have excellent numbers of students attending and engaged. Our TAFE program starts next week, students will be attending Engineering, Hair and Beauty, Hairdressing, Music, Health, Agricultural courses, Building and Construction as well as Electrotechnology. Students will be studying a core group of subjects in school, however we have a range of students studying languages such as French, German, Spanish, Indonesian and Japanese. Other students will be access Distance Education and the Victorian Virtual Learning Network for Maths. This displays a plethora of offerings for our students to ensure they can access a range of interests and subjects. Ultimately, this year our students and staff need to remain focused on improvement. No matter where students finished last year, our students are encouraged to work hard to improve each day. We have a great school, with excellent people who want to foster the talents of the kids we teach. Lastly, welcome to Angela Smith as our new LOTE/Japanese teacher. She is an excellent addition to our school staff who the students already engage positively with and who the staff respect. We wish you every success Ange.

DAN WALKER7 -12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL A warm welcome is extended to both our returning and first time families for the 2017 school year. This year we welcome to our teaching staff Miss Ashlee Holmes and Mrs Angela Smith. We have begun our school year with an across the board focus on the ‘Values’ and ‘Behaviours’ that we will be putting into practice throughout the year to help us work and play together in a co-operative, respectful way. Just as we have in previous years, we will be using our school policy “Student Code of Behaviour” to ensure all students feel safe and supported while at school. Our first round in the swimming program begins tomorrow. Once again this year, the cost of the program has been subsidized by the very generous support of TSPA making it possible for us to charge just $20 for the 8 lessons. This cost goes towards funding the two qualified swimming instructors who work with the classroom teacher taking lessons for each grade. The cost of pool entry is an expense that each child must pay to the YMCA for entry to the pool and is not set by the school. If families have a season ticket then they need to provide the number to the school who will pass it on to the YMCA instead of the $2.20 per swim. Our regular P-6 Assemblies will begin on Friday 17th F ebwith 5-6A leading the assembly. This will also be the assembly that our new house Captains are presented with their badges of office. Our assemblies get underway at 9:00am and go for about 15-20 minutes – please feel free to check the roster on our web page and come in to join us.To support families with planning this Term 1, a copy of the term calendar is printedon the back page of the newsletter. (Pop it on the fridge.)We look forward to a year of learning together and hope that all our families take every opportunity to be actively involved in our Education Community.
