Our distinctive contribution

2015 Development Goals have to be seen in conjunction with 2015 Climate Summit.Ethical goals have to be aligned with what works (for development, health, environment, peace).Practical ethics has to be based on robust explanatory theory and critical empirical research. Its touchstone is the ‘morality of the depths’.

Envisioning Goals

“With 2015 set as the deadline for both a new climate agreement and the post-2015 development agenda, we are at the point in human development when we need to act to protect,” Mary Robinson.

“The rights of the most vulnerable in society are already undermined by climate change … it is our duty, as citizens of the world, to realise a new model of sustainable growth and development that is supported by strong legal frameworks.”

Core engaged research

Framing understanding of poverty & injustice: key role of natural environment & resources (ecological marginalization; resource capture).

Analyzing international norms & institutions.

Engaging in support of fair trade, local sustainability & responsible investment.

Promoting understanding of land & livelihood rights as human rights vs property rights.

Next?

Having had some success in supporting engagement of our own university in promoting global justice, we are keen to play a greater part in a global network.

We are keen to extend public understanding of how rights in relation to environment and resources address a constitutive part of the problem of global poverty.
