Commodore’s LogHow can it possibly be November? What a year we have had! The stream of activities at the Club has been almost non-stop, showing what an active, vibrant group of people our membership is. While all this action can wear out this Commodore, I have been having a blast with all the action! !Our Club expansion continues in the forefront, with permit discussions taking the main stage. Most of the permits are complete; the remaining item is the sewage ejection system. I know—a lovely subject, right? This one is a big issue as much of our improvements hinge on it, and the city is still reviewing the plans. Our loan is also very close to being finalized, and activity should start early in 2017. !We had a very busy few weeks at the end of September and beginning of October with the Shields National Championship Regatta, followed soon after by the Sea Otter Regatta. Both of these events were highly successful. We hosted sailors young and old! The Club has received high marks for hospitality and racing professionalism, which means that every member should, as always, be proud of our Club. The Harvest Dinner was, once again, a rousing success, with quite a good sum being raised for the young boaters of our Club and the Peninsula. And the Halloween party, while lightly attended, was deemed a success thanks to the creative efforts of the Entertainment Committee and our Club staff. !The big event coming up on my calendar is, of course, the Commodore’s Ball! The ball will be held on Saturday, December 10, at the Intercontinental – The Clement Hotel on Cannery Row in Monterey. There

will be cocktails, dinner, awards, and dancing to the Retreuxspect Band. Chip Wood has graciously agreed to host the Dubious Achievement Award again this year, and advised me that it’s not too late to submit entries for this annual roast. The hotel has made a limited number of rooms available at a discounted rate, so please think about making a reservation early for this evening. Look for your invitation in the snail mailbox soon! !As I wind down this year, I want to express my thanks and appreciation to all of the membership for their time, their volunteerism, their advice, and their participation in our yacht club. We have accomplished so much this year, from bringing our human resource policies up to standard to adding on to our deck and renovating our entrance. Every single activity that we participated in this year made our Club better, and I’m pleased and proud to have been a part of it. !Cheers ‘til next month- David Duncan !!

Dink-Around by Sharon Halvorson

Page 4

Thanks to Tom and Marianne Mangold's loan of the "floating Island", we were able to pull off another crazy dink-around this year - 4th annual! It was a light turn out, probably due to the fact it was on the same day as the Harvest dinner, but the six dinks that came had a great time in perfect weather! Greg and Di started towing the Halvorsons with the dink table and were soon aided by Robin Jeffers and Annie. Once we were settled and anchored, the Deerings, Jeffers, Cailliets, Duncans and Hoovers joined in the merriment. !We stayed about 3 hours sharing stories and food and fun music - with a sing along led by Sarah Duncan. Next year - the 5th annual..see you there.

!My mother-in-law said,

'One day I will dance on your grave.' I said 'I hope you do; I will be buried at sea.'

Les Dawson !!Where did the 2016 racing season go? Suddenly I’m writing the Tiller article for November. This year was marked by great racing, tough competition, close finishes, the expansion of the Shields Fleet, a Nationals in Monterey and Santa Cruz, MPYC winning the Veeder’s Cup, great camaraderie and friendship and we did not hit any Scuba Divers. During all racing events the little Club under the Pier was first rate in organization, food preparation/delivery and a magnificent example of simplicity. !More importantly all racers demonstrated a great dedication to the art of sailing and demonstrating Corinthian spirit throughout the year and no one was injured seriously (to my knowledge). That is saying a lot about all racers and this Club!! !My December Tiller article will be more specific as I end my second year as Race Chairman. For now I will provide you with a first look at the Club winners this year. !Remember from last year that my graduate degree is in Chinese and Japanese History. Math is not my forte. Below I present the initial Season results after trying to get all the calculations right from the major 2016 89 + racing results based on the MPYC Sailing Instructions.

I will recheck my calculations. Please contact me soonest as I am at the limit of time to procure trophies for the Club “Prom” on 10 December. !If you are concerned regarding the results, I am happy to have you “dance on my grave.” I plan on being buried at sea!!! !V/R, John Feeley

MPYC Juniors Compete in 2016 Sea Otter Regatta !The weather conditions were perfect for High School racing on Monterey Bay. MPYC had three teams competing in Silver Fleet: Carmel High School, Monterey High School, and Santa Catalina School. Each school had both an A and a B team out on the water for both days, and some teams even had enough sailors for ringers to come in! !One of the high points of this regatta came on the second day, when Dalton Muck teamed with his brother, Nathan, to come in second place out of 29 boats on the second race of the day! A great start and rounding the correct leeward mark enabled the Muck's to finish strong. In this same race, a personal best was reached by the Santa Catalina team. This all-woman team rocked it! In the same race the Catalina team got a personal best finish at 10th place! Monterey worked hard and kept their cool while sailing in the largest fleet they have ever competed in! !Overall, I am very proud of the performance of all our teams. I am already looking forward to our next practices and regattas coming up. With such a great group of supportive parents and willing kids, this High School sailing season is looking bright for us!
