Mayor’s ReportHello everyone, by the time you are reading this we will have wel-comed much more pleasant tem-peratures. Although the weather is better we are still not completely out of Hurricane season yet, so please be vigilant. Hurricane Michael, while a very devastating storm for the Florida Panhandle, should serve as a good lesson in always being prepared. This

storm formed in a short time and intensified very quick-ly over the warm Gulf waters, leaving very little time for preparation. Please always stay prepared.

The parking lot at the Public Safety Building is finally com-pleted after an extended weather delay. We are especially grateful to the John Phillips Family once again for this contribution to your Island. Please note, at 6:00 p.m. on November 20, 2018, we will host a thank you reception at our regular council meeting for the John Phillips Family. Please come out and join us in recognizing their many gen-erous donations to the Island.

The Village of Tiki Island has an Ordinance prohibiting Short Term Rentals. We need your help to enforce this Ordinance. There are very few homes that are grand-fa-thered for Short Term Rental. If you suspect Short Term Rental activity happening at a home near you, please e-mail [email protected] so that we can investigate.

The Tiki Island Civic Association is responsible for the on-line phonebook information. Please e-mail all additions, edits or deletions to [email protected].

If you have not yet signed up for e-mail notifications for important information, emergencies, etc., please visit www.villageoftikiisland.org and click on the “Government Tab.” Then scroll down and click on the “ConnectCty” tab to en-ter, edit or delete you information. We respectfully request that you please do not contact City Hall to add, delete, or edit your information, you must do this yourself.

Historians date the first Thanksgiving to almost 400 years ago in November 1621, when the newly ar-rived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest cel-

ebration. Beyond the legend of their famous voyage and founding Plymouth Colony, the Pilgrims were ordinary English men and women who followed their faith.

England was a Roman Catholic nation until 1534, when King Henry VIII (reigned 1509-1547) declared himself head of a new national church called the, “Church of England.” He made some changes to his new church, but some people felt that he retained too many practices of the Roman Church. They wanted to return to a simpler faith and a less structured form of worship as in the way of the early Christians.

There was another group who thought the new Church of England was beyond reform. They were called “separaists,” and demanded the formation of new separate church con-gregations. This was very dangerous because it was illegal to be a part of any church other than the Church of England. They were harassed, fined and sent to jail. The Separatists

fled to the Dutch Netherlands where they could prac-tice their own faith without fear of persecution from the English government or its church but life in Holland was extremely difficult. The congregation remained in Holland for the next 12 years then decided to move again.

On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower set out alone with a congregation of 102 passengers and arrived in New England on November 11, 1620. After several weeks, an exploration party found a suitable place to settle. There was a good harbor, plentiful supply of fresh water, game and cleared fields that were favorable for settlement. The Mayflower arrived in Plymouth Harbor on December 16, 1620, and the colonists began to build their town. While houses were being built, the group continued to live on the ship where half of the congregation died from illness due to bad weather conditions.

Although they occasionally caught glimpses of Native People, it wasn’t until four months after their arrival that the colonists met and communicated with the Wampanoag Indians. In March 1621, they made a treaty of mutual protection with the Wampanoag leader, Massasoit. The Pilgrims were taught how to grow Indian corn, and, in the fall of 1621, the colonists marked their first harvest with a 3-day celebration. Massasoit and 90 of his men joined the English Pilgrims for feasting and entertainment. In the 1800s, this famous celebration became the basis for the sto-ry of the First Thanksgiving. Cargo Lifts

It’s Finally Fa’ll, Ya’ll!By Mayann Tilson

Well, I guess it’s good to be back from Rhode Island, leaving that lovely fall weather and tasty lobstahs and chowdah but au-tumn has been making cameo

appearances down here so be patient, it’s coming. It’s kind of “tween season” right now in our gardens so maybe toss a mum in a pot to look seasonal, hang a decorative scarecrow on your door for Halloween and call it a day. If you’re looking for work outside on a brisk 80-degree Texas fall day, then how about some end of season fertilizing? Taking the time to fertilize now will strengthen your plants’ and lawn’s roots, giving them a strong base on which to thrive next spring so an application by mid-November is essen-tial, preferably with a formula of 13-25-12. The push of phosphorus (middle number) will stimulate root growth before winter sets in so you’re insuring that your lawn will green-up quicker come spring and plants will put out oo-dles of flowers just in time to be a Garden Club 2019 Yard

of the Month contender! Now, if that doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will.

New topic – boating! With days getting shorter, it’s a pos-sibility you could unexpectedly be boating in the dark on your way home from a day at sea. Even on a moonlit eve-ning, you can’t see as well as during the day and objects won’t come into view until they are fairly close. Once your eyes have gotten accustomed to the dark, too much on-board light (from nav screens, lights, etc.) can destroy your night vision and now your eyes need to re-adjust and your pupils need to rewiden and that can take some time. When navigating at night, avoid turning on flashlights or other bright lights that can destroy night vision. Boats don’t have headlights for good reason. On the water, light reflecting off waves or mist is often more blinding than beneficial light at night so try to use a spotlight sparingly, particularly if there are other boaters in the area. The harsh glare of a spotlight is not only annoying to others, but it can also ruin the night vision of nearby boaters, potentially putting them in harm’s way of an unseen hazard. Also, we “fall back” on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 a.m. when Daylight Savings Time ends so that means Dark-thirty, Beer-thirty and Wine-thirty will now be an hour earlier. Don’t you just love Tiki Island public service announcements?

This time of year is my favorite because of the time spent with my mom inthe kitchen. Being from New Orleans, her culinary background is heavily

influenced by Cajun and Creole cooking. So even our “traditional”Thanksgiving spread has a little twist. Here is one of my favorites that is

always on our Thanksgiving dinner table.
