Principal’s Report
Congratulations to all our children who are working so hard for their teachers throughout all the changes each day. I am so very proud of the way that the children are managing teacher changes and their focus on quality, respect and responsibility. Well done children.
A large number of children and some staff have been absent due to illness and professional learning so far this term, please make sure that a note is sent to the teacher, with an explanation for absence, when your child returns.
Chess Champions!
Congratulations to our Y5/6 Chess players who represented our school at the Interschool Chess Challenge at HSPA last Friday. It was a very successful day, with Tighes Hill being crowned the winning team at the end of the day. Well done to Connor S who was the top scoring player and winner of the tournament, with Jamie finishing in 2nd place and Akira in 5th place! Great sports-manship, comradery and behavior was displayed throughout the day by all THPS students. Thank you to all the parents who sup-ported this event by providing transport and to Ms Armstrong for organising this opportunity for our students.
Thank you to all the P&C volunteers who ran the Mother’s Day Stall on Friday 6th. You were amazing. Staff and students truly appreciate all your efforts and support.
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2017
To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff the school appropriately for 2017, I need all parents enrolling chil-dren K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2017, we can then contact them and in-clude them in our numbers for next year.
Reports
Semester 1 reports will be sent home in Week 10. These com-prehensive reports reflect all the work that the children have achieved in Terms I and 2, based on regular assessment tasks and indicate the outcomes achieved and goals set for Terms 3 and 4. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher to clarify any questions that you may have in regards to your child’s learning and progress. Parent-Teacher interviews will take place again in term 3.
Dogs in School
Just a reminder that we don’t have, or bring dogs into the school at any time, as was agreed through the P&C. This is regardless or size or breed. I would also encourage you not to tie your dogs up at the entry points to our school as students exiting or enter-ing the school have to pass close by them and this is a real issue for those students with phobia and fears of dogs. Many thanks for supporting the school with this issue.
Entertainment Books
The school is now selling the latest 2016-2017 Entertainment Book as a fundraiser for the school. The cost is still $60, this cost has remained the same for a number of years now and is great value. There are 2 ways you can get it, either the book or the dig-ital version loaded onto your smart phone. The school receives $12 from every book sold – so drop into the office and grab a book or a digital application form before they sell out.
PEANUTS/ Anaphylactic Reaction Reminder
The number of children at Tighes Hill Public School with allergies to different food products and substances is growing. At this school we have students with severe (life threatening) reactions to peanuts and all tree nuts enrolled. To maximise the wellbeing and safety for all students, parents are asked not to pack peanut butter sandwiches or nut products for your children and to make sure that you are vigilant in reading labels of all pre-packaged foods. Please let’s work together to provide a safe environment for all students.
The supervising staff at THPS has been very impressed by the ‘no fuss’ approach our students have shown towards the NAPLAN tests. With all the negative publicity in some media outlets about kids getting stressed, it is nice to know that our students understand that this is an assessment like any other they might do at any other time throughout the year, and should be treated accordingly. The data gathered from these assessments can provide valuable information to assist teaching programs.
Musica Viva
A huge thank you to our P&C for paying the costs to have this great production come and visit our stu-
dents again in 2016. It is on next Wednesday 25th, and there will be 2 sessions, K-2 and 3-6.
Office Times
The school office opens at 8.30am each morning and closes at 3.40pm. Outside of these operating hours the office cannot process financial activities or administer first aid treatment in the sick bay. Those families staying onsite after the school day has finished take full responsibility for their children ’s wellbeing and safety. Access to the sick bay outside of the office operating hours is not permitted. Thank you for sup-porting the school with this endeavor.
School Finance
As previously notified in earlier newsletters and a separate note home, our school will be changing to the
NEW NSW school finance system. This will involve a very complex rearrangement of all money transac-
tions coming into and out of the school. We would urge all families to pay as much of any outstanding
monies owing to the school as soon as possible before the change over, as there will possibly be a few
weeks in which we can not receipt any money. As a result of this, many of the excursions and activities
planned have the date of 3rd June for final payment. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Congratulations to all our children and staff, a fantastic beginning to the term.

Stage 3 - Canberra Excursion
Our year 5/6 students have the opportunity to attend a 3 day trip to Canberra taking place in Term 4 this year. Thank you to all the families who returned their expression of interest last term. The cost for this ex-cursion will be $290 per student. Permission notes and information regarding this excursion has been sent home with students and can also be found on our school website. Payments can be made at the office or online using our school website. Please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Armstrong if you have any questions or concerns about this event.
Speak Off Competition
This week students in Stages 2 and 3 are presenting their term 2 speaking and listening tasks in class.
The best speakers from each class will be invited to present their speech at next week’s Speak Off
Competition, which will be held on Thursday 26th May at 9:20 am in the Upper Hall. Successful
students will also be invited to participate in regional public speaking competitions coordinated by Mrs
Derricott. Parents and friends are welcome to join us for this event and show their support for our stu-
dents.
SRC - Crazy Hair Day
Thank you to our SRC who organised a terrific fundraiser to support Stewart House Children’s Charity. It was great to see so many students support this wonderful event, with so many creative and amazing hair-styles. We raised over $370 on the day. For more photos, head to our website or class blogs.

KINDY PARENTS:
During Term 2 your child will be involved in the FUN FRIENDS program as part of their PD/H lessons. Sessions 1 - 5 will focus on the following areas...
F = FEELINGS recognising own and others feelings, normalisation of all feelings and making happy feelings grow in self and others
R = RELAX involves listening to your body, breathing slowly and learning some relaxation games
I = I CAN TRY teaches children about red thoughts and green thoughts and how feelings vs. thoughts.
It helps children focus on green 'go' thoughts for being brave and trying new or difficult things
All lessons encourage working in groups, feeling confident and brave, understanding and accepting dif-ferences and goal setting.
Please encourage your child to talk to you about what they are learning at school and to demonstrate some of the games/skills they are learning.
If you would like more information please contact your child's teacher or myself

National Sorry Day is held on the 26th May each year to acknowledge and recognise members of the
Stolen generations. On our journey towards reconciliation, we take a moment to remember past govern-
ment policies of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and
as we reflect on the painful and sad history of the Stolen Generations, we also work towards resilience,
healing and the power of saying sorry.

The Friendship Seat
Yesterday we were delighted with the arrival of our very
own Friendship Seat, which you will see situated in our
playground. Thanks to an idea from Fiona Whitton and
generously paid for by our P&C, the new Friendship Seat is a welcome contribution to making our play-
ground a safe and happy place for all students.

How quickly is this year going!
The School has certainly kept us all busy with the
many activities organized for term 2.
MUSICA VIVA will be visiting our school on
Wednesday 25th May and will present a LIVE music
show, exploring a number of styles of Indonesian
music. The show will feature a mini gamelan
orchestra, which brings that distinctive and stirring
Indonesian sound to life, with masked dance and
traditional instruments. This show will be
presented as a gift to all students from the P&C.
This is one of the many ways that the P&C use its
fund-raised money to enrich our kids school
experience.
Thankyou to the parents who came along to share
thoughts on the way the school canteen operates.
At the last P&C meeting, a Canteen Sub Committee
was voted in to take on the task of investigating
ways of moving forward and working with the
ladies currently running the canteen. We
appreciate all the feedback and it is evident that we
are all committed in providing a unique and
healthy canteen at Tighes Hill Public School.
Bunnings BBQ (Kotara)Sunday 19th June
We are super happy to say that we have
some volunteer coordinators for our next
Bunnings BBQ. There will be a note out soon
asking for parents to volunteer an hour or two
on the day, so keep an eye out in your childs
bag!
A Big THANKYOU to our volunteers!
ELECTION DAYSaturday 2nd July
Election Days are a great source of income for
the P&C. The community generally arrive to
vote, with a few dollars spare that they expect
to donate to their local school. We are going
to run a cake stall and a raffle.
A note will be sent home soon asking for help
on this day. Also, we will need LOTS of cakes
to sell! So keep an eye out for that note too.
The Big FeteFriday 28th October
The school is holding it's bi-annual FETE this
year on Fri 28th October. The coordinator of
the Class Room Stalls is seeking parents and
family to run Stalls for their children's' classes.
On Sunday, 22nd May the Islington Baptist Church will be holding a picnic in Islington Park from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm. There will be a free sausage sizzle. Face painting and games will be or-ganised for the children. Come and enjoy the time with us.
