TIFT REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Located in Tifton, Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) is a 181-bed, not-for-profit referral center that serves as the flagship for Tift Regional Health System. TRMC offers signature services in surgery, oncology, cardiovascular care, women’s health, neurology, medical imaging, and more.

The TRMC West Campus is an outpatient center housing physician clinics and diagnostic services. Cook Medical Center in Adel offers a 60-bed acute care facility, including a 12-bed geriatric psychiatric unit, as well as a 95-bed nursing home. Tift Regional Physician Group includes hospital-owned outpatient clinics located throughout south central Georgia.

Tift Regional Health System is under the direction of the Hospital Authority of Tift County and provides for the community’s charitable care without a financial subsidy from county government.

In 2016, Tift Regional Health System celebrates 75 years of providing quality care and compassion. The 35-bed Tift County Hospital, located in Tifton at the corner of 12th Street and Tift Avenue, was formally dedicated on February 7, 1941. This building is now the Pickett Building, home of the Tift County Health Department.

In 1962, the Tift County Hospital Authority was created to assume the responsibilities of the hospital board. By 1965, the county had outgrown Tift County Hospital and the Hospital Authority members sought to develop a new medical facility on 20 acres of land on East 18th Street in Tifton. Tift General Hospital, the only facility in the county named for Captain H.H. Tift, opened with 85 beds on November 1, 1965, with a medical staff of 14 doctors.

From there, Tift General Hospital rapidly grew to meet the growing needs of Tift and 11 surrounding counties, recruiting a wide range of physicians and undergoing several expansions, renovations, and additions over the years. In 2000, the Tift County Hospital Authority approved to change the name of the 181-bed Tift General Hospital to Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC), to officially take effect in January 2001.

Today, there is Tift Regional Health System, consisting of TRMC and the TRMC West Campus in Tifton, Cook Medical Center in Adel, and Tift Regional Physician Group with clinics located throughout south central Georgia. We offer 165 physicians and 100 midlevel providers representing more than 30 specialties. We are also a founding partner of Stratus Healthcare, a clinically integrated network of hospitals, physicians, and other providers from around the state.

NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH GEORGIA SPORTS MEDICINE TRHS has acquired Georgia Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Clinic in Tifton, as well as its ambulatory surgery center, and now employs the practice’s orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic spine specialist, non-physician providers, and office staff. NEW WOUND CARE & HYPERBARIC CLINIC NOW OPEN The new Tift Regional Wound Care & Hyperbaric Clinic provides comprehensive treatment for non-healing wounds. NEW CUTTING-EDGE PULMONARY MEDICINE PROCEDURES TRMC and the pulmonologists with Affinity Clinic offer two new state-of-the-art tools to help patients with respiratory disease issues. The first, bronchial thermoplasty (BT), is a minimally-invasive

bronchoscopic procedure that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle (ASM). This helps reduce attacks in adult patients with severe asthma and is shown to improve asthma-related quality of life for people living with the disease. TRMC also has the new Veran SPiNView Thoracic Navigation System, an electromagnetic navigation platform that allows Affinity Clinic pulmonologists to biopsy solitary pulmonary nodules for the potential early diagnosis of lung cancer. This is the only navigation system that provides visualization, accurate navigation and real-time confirmation of nodule location. LINX SYSTEM PROVIDES RELIEF FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM ACID REFLUX General and bariatric surgeon Christopher Smith, MD, is performing a new procedure at TRMC to reduce the effects of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly known as heartburn or acid reflux. The new LINX system offered by Dr. Smith at TRMC is a small, flexible band of magnets enclosed in titanium beads and connected by titanium wires. Dr. Smith implants the LINX System around the weak esophageal sphincter, just above the stomach. The magnetic attraction between the beads keeps the weak esophageal sphincter closed to help prevent reflux. Swallowing forces the beads to separate temporarily to allow food and liquid to pass into the stomach. Dr. Smith performs evaluations at Affinity Clinic in Tifton. HEART AND VASCULAR CENTER OFFERS NEW RADIAL LOUNGE The TRMC Heart and Vascular Center recently opened a new lounge that allows cardiac catheterization outpatients to recover in a more comfortable and attractive environment, minimizing the feeling of “hospitalization” and avoiding the need to access a hospital bed. Radial access is a cardiac catheterization technique in which the cardiologist inserts the catheter through the wrist. TRMC LEADS THE WAY IN TELEMEDICINE TRMC launched its telemedicine program eight years ago and has had more than 900 telemedicine encounters each year. The health system has been hailed as a “front runner” by the Georgia Partnership for TeleHealth (GPT) and was named a GPT “Partner of the Year.” TRMC currently offers telemedicine connections to school-based

clinics in three counties, as well as the health sciences center at ABAC. TRMC also provides telemedicine connections to pediatric subspecialists (such as pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric endocrinology), psychiatry, stroke management, and more. To learn more, call (229) 353-6520.

A UNIQUE APPROACH TO JOINT REPLACEMENT AND SPINE CARE The Tift Regional Joint Replacement & Spine Care Center offers specialized treatment for patients recovering from total joint replacement and spine surgery. With a comprehensive educational program, this specialized inpatient unit at TRMC is specifically dedicated to helping patients overcome pain and restore mobility. The goal is to involve patients and family members in treatment every step of the way to ensure optimal recovery. Developed in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons, nurses, therapists, and case managers, this unique program focuses on a plan of care tailored to each patient’s needs. CANCER CENTER EXPANSION TRHS has been making progress on its expansion of the Anita Stewart Oncology Center, which provides treatment for area cancer patients. Located in Tifton at 1623 Madison Ave., the center is adding 4,667 square feet of space and renovating 4,204 square feet of space for chemotherapy and hematology services. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2016. A new linear accelerator for radiation therapy will also be added in the coming year. TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS Radiologist Carl Stalvey, MD, is now offering a non-surgical laser procedure at TRMC to treat varicose veins. TIFT REGIONAL RECOGNIZED FOR QUALITY AND SAFETY

Tift Regional Health System (TRHS) is committed to fostering a culture of safety and quality. Made up of clinical leaders, administrative staff, and hospital board members, a special

quality committee reviews outcomes and individual cases to identify opportunities for performance improvement. A daily patient safety check-in is conducted between a member of the executive team and managers from nursing units and support areas. All staff members participate in patient-safety measures for their respective areas and attend periodic training.

In addition to undergoing reviews by The Joint Commission, TRHS has volunteered to be surveyed for quality measures by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit coalition of large U.S. employers and healthcare purchasers.

Special recognitions based on publicly available quality and patient safety data include:
