the twinkle in Ray Mueller’s eyes looks familiar, it

may be because he has a close connection to the ‘big

man’ at the North Pole – Ray has been an important

Christmas icon in Lynchburg for the past decade.

The twinkle in his eye is not magic, though, and it is

shared with Helen, his wife of 56 years. It reflects an

inner joy that can’t wait to reach out and help –

individuals, groups, organizations, their community.

Helen and Ray share an incredible life story of love,

commitment to each other, and a tradition of service.

While some people understandably need to ‘wait for

the right time’ in their lives to reach out or get involved,

service to others has always been a way of life for Ray,

as first modeled by his parents. He and Helen then

quite naturally included volunteerism as part of their life

together. As their family came along the focus was on

organizations which were family-inclusive: both Ray

and Helen were extremely active in Girl Scout leader-

ship for years, even as they moved for his work. Helen

states, “Once they find out you can work, the word

spreads, and they find you even when you move!”

Since settling in Lynchburg in 2002, with family grown

and spread all over the country, Helen and Ray have

totally engaged with their church, the Lion’s Club,

Salvation Army, and thankfully, Meals on Wheels. Meals

on Wheels is grateful for their dedicated delivery on

Route 7 - three days a month - as well as for the extra

support they periodically provide on office projects.

Meal recipients enjoy the warm relationships that have

developed over years of consistent contact, and relish

being serenaded by Ray when birthdays roll around!

As many of their contemporaries are easing off of

commitments, the Muellers show no interest in doing

any such thing. “Why would we do that?” asks Helen.

“There is still so much opportunity for us to make a

difference,

together!”

Meals on Wheels has created a fundraiser that has never

been seen before in Lynchburg – a destination raffle. It opens

on February 15th and here is how it works:

Planned Giving – Several of our

friends made Qualified Charitable De-

ductions (QCDs) from their IRAs this year

and said it was easier than ever. In addi-

tion, naming MOW in your estate can

leave a lasting impact far into the future.

Birthday Boxes – Local Girl Scouts

make almost 100 each year; one sup-

porter brings us 2 each month – because

we served her mother, and the birthday

box meant so much to her. Many fill in

the signup sheet online, and deliver

those boxes on birthdays, and spend a

few extra minutes with the recipient – the

greatest gift of all!

Holiday Deliveries – We want to

thank our incredible volunteers who

deliver on holidays, who don’t give up

despite snow, cold rain or miserable

days. This year , we delivered meals to

more than 275 people on Thanksgiving

and 263 on Christmas.

Emergency Kits – 220 Emergency

Kits will be delivered to our recipients to

keep them safe during times of crisis. We

are thankful to the Red Cross, Genworth,

CVACL and the ARC for this collabora-

tive effort.

There Are So Many Ways to

Share

Gratitude is a word we hear a lot

during the holidays, but it is one

that is used at Meals on Wheels all

year long. We are grateful for our

supporters who are able to write a

check so we can continue to

meet the need, but we are also grateful to those who are so crea-

tive in how they give and care for the people in our community.

As you can see, I delivered meals with ‘Reindeer Susan’ who also

brought Christmas candles to each recipient (and regularly brings

treats from her Sunday School class), Here are just a few of the

other ways people shared this year:

Family Donations – We love that several families have started

designating MOW as their ‘charity of choice’ during Christmas.

One family in particular has a beautiful perspective on this, using

their gathering to prepare birthday boxes and tray favors as well

as collect a contribution: See their story later in the letter.

Handy Helping Others – the employees of NB Handy held an office

fundraiser, naming MOW as the recipient.

The Wound Care Center and Canteen bought Christmas presents

for our recipients that missed participating in Santa for a Senior

and Heritage Methodist’s Angel Tree.

Forest Hill Ruritan Club – included support to MOW in their local

projects this year, in addition to scholarships and food baskets .

Subaru Share the Love – a number of you purchased or leased a

new Subaru from Terry Subaru during the Share the Love Event,

and named Meals on Wheels as your Charity of Choice!

L ike many families, the Huntington Family has grown over the

years. Five siblings who grew up in the Boonsboro neighborhood

of Lynchburg have now blossomed into a massive extended

family with spouses, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-

grandchildren!

Some years ago, this family decided to focus holiday time on what they

felt was truly important—being together. Instead of exchanging gifts with one another, the siblings take

turns selecting the ‘annual charity.’ At the Family Holiday Gathering, the weekend between Christmas

and New Years, everyone brings appropriate donations to that cause.

This year the Huntington Family chose Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg. They brought donations

of pet food for our Animeals program, assembled Birthday Boxes while they were

together, and made a significant cash donation as well.

“It is such a wonderful tradition, and has simplified the Christmas holiday

immensely for this family of parents, 5 siblings, their various spouses, multiple

children, and now great-grandchildren! Plus, as a spiritual family, the act of

giving to those in need is much more satisfying than just giving to each other.

We are all blessed to have more than enough.”
