A WORLD OF SCIENCE (CONTINUED)

• French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur is best known for creating the method of pasteurization to keep milk and wine from spoiling in addition to creating vaccines for a number of diseases including rabies. Oddly enough, when Pasteur was in school, his teachers considered him to only be mediocre at chemistry.

• All coffee fanatics have Melitta Bentz to thank. Bentz was a typical German housewife that went on to invent the coffee filter, 300 years after coffee had been discovered. She revolutionized the idea of using paper to filter out the unwanted residues.

• Before he made his contributions to our knowledge about space (as well as creating his many inventions), Italian born Galileo Galilei wanted to be a musician. His father insisted that he go to medical school, yet Galilei never received his degree from the University of Pisa. He did, however, go on to publish “The Starry Messenger,” presenting among many other findings that Earth was not the center of the universe.

• Although he might have found proof for the Earth not being the center of the universe,

Galilei was not the first to introduce this concept. Mathematician and astronomer Nicholas Copernicus first claimed that the sun was the stationary object that Earth revolved around. His idea was disregarded by most, but he is credited as the initiator of the Scientific Revolution.

• German chemist Robert Bunsen is famous for the Bunsen burner, although he never actually invented the iconic scientific tool; he merely improved it.

• Although most scientists get their start in universities, it is only appropriate that Laszlo Jozsef Biro, inventor of the ball point pen, began as a journalist and editor. His brilliant idea stemmed from his annoyance at writing with a fountain pen.

• Changing forever the music industry, German immigrant Emile Berliner revolutionized sound recording by being the first person to start recording on flat disks or records. He went on to invent the gramophone and records. Did you know that the first records were made of glass long before they switched to plastic?

• Marie Curie, one of the most famous female scientists, is celebrated for her discovery of the mysterious element radium. She completely altered the way scientists thought about matter and energy and paved the way for the treatment of many diseases.

• Glorified for his work with atomic theory, England native John Dalton achieved his findings due to his high interest in meteorology. He kept weather records until his death and published a book titled “Meteorological Observations.” He later

It was pop art icon Andy Warhol who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “It’s the movies that have really been running things in America since they were invented. They show you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to feel about it, and how to look when you feel about it.”

If you were like the average rabbit, you would take 18 naps every day.

You probably know that the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” was based on the book “The Wonderful Wiz-ard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. You may not realize, though, that Baum wrote a total of 14 Oz books between 1900 and 1920. The series continued even after the author’s death; Ruth Plumly Thompson produced one Oz book every year between 1921 and 1939.

Those who study such things say that wine was being drunk more than 7,000 years ago, in ancient Sumeria.

When the Coca-Cola Company first started market-ing its product in China, the advertisements used Chinese symbols to spell out the brand’s name pho-netically. It was only after the ads had been pub-lished that the marketers learned that those symbols spelled out the phrase “bite the wax tadpole.”

The manufacture of a single domestic automobile requires the use of a whopping 39,000 gallons of water.

Every year, about 10 percent of the world’s popula-tion visits a zoo. In the United States, though, about half of us make such a visit annually.

Most people have about 100,000 hairs on their head. It’s not clear why, but redheads tend to have some-what fewer hairs -- about 90,000 -- while blondes have more.

Q: I can find new episodes of “Army Wives” on the TV schedule. Is it done for the season? -- Genie D., via e-mailA: Don’t worry -- there will be 10 new episodes of Life-time’s “Army Wives” starting Sunday, June 24, at 10 p.m.

ET/PT. Note the new time slot, as “Wives” will now follow “Drop Dead Diva.” Upon the show’s return, Susan Lucci will be back in her guest-starring role.***Q: I watched the most wonderful documentary on PBS the other night on the life of Johnny Carson. He is and always will be the best late-night talk show host, and I was very interested to learn about this usually private man. Will it air again soon? If not, can I buy it on DVD? -- Paul F., Al-toona, Pa.A: I know the documentary you are talking about, because I watched it too and absolutely loved it. In the late ’80s and early ’90s -- when I was finally allowed to stay up late -- I watched “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” reli-giously, so I was thrilled to sneak a peek into this talented man’s life. You can stream “American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night” on your computer at pbs.org/americanmasters. However, if you can wait until July 17, you can purchase the DVD (or Blu-ray) of the film, which will include outtakes and bonus material, through PBS Distribution.***Q: My wife and I loved the show “Cold Case,” and still watch the reruns. We wonder what-ever happened to Kathryn Morris, who played Det. Lily Rush. We have seen all the other lead characters on other shows, but not her. -- Ron C., Roanoke, Va.A: The gorgeous 43-year-old just finished the short film “Sunday’s Mother,” and most recently co-starred with Denise Richards and Jim Belushi in the direct-to-DVD movie “Cougars, Inc.” She also played a small role in last year’s Oscar-nominated film “Moneyball”; however, her part ended up on the cutting-room floor. I haven’t seen the DVD extras yet, but hopefully we can watch her there. I think your wife and you will agree that we need to see Kathryn in a leading role on another hit series stat!***Q: My two favorite new shows of this past season were both on Fox: “Touch” and “Alcatraz.” Will they be back for another season? -- Sienna F., via e-mailA: I’ve got good news and bad news. Want the bad news first? Fox has opted not to pick up “Alcatraz” for a second season. While it debuted pretty strong in the ratings, each week saw a steady decline in viewers, and it lost more than half its initial viewers by season’s end. “Touch,” however will be back for a second season. And, in case you were wondering, “Amer-ican Dad,” “Bones,” “The Cleveland Show,” “Fringe,” “Glee,” “Kitchen Nightmares,” “New Girl,” “Raising Hope” and “The Simpsons” will all be back for new seasons come fall.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

“Big Miracle” (PG) -- This based-on-a-true-story family flick tells the tale of three trapped whales and the people who come together to save them. A likable young TV reporter in small-town Alaska (John Krasinksi) finds out about a family of whales stuck under the ice, cut off from the ocean. What starts as a local news piece becomes a story watched by the whole nation as an activist (Drew Barrymore) and many others (it’s a big cast) get involved.Krasinski brings his “Jim from “The Office” charm, and helps keep the movie light. It is, af-ter all, a movie set in the real world -- where saving the whales requires help from such cyni-cal sources as politicians and oil executives. The balance between reality and feel-good is impressive, and successfully delivers the warm, fuzzy feeling.

“Wanderlust” (R) -- Linda (Jennifer Annis-ton) and George (Paul Rudd) are a Manhattan couple frayed and overpressured by the big city life. When George loses his job, the couple de-cide to pack it in and start over somewhere else. On their way to Atlanta, they stumble upon Ely-sium, a sort of hippie commune full of friendly weirdos who invite the couple to stay. The bottom line is this: David Wain writes, di-rects and edits funny things. He has many funny friends whom he casts in his movies, and they usually give great performances. His works usu-ally fall in with the absurd, subversive and cult-ish, but this film is aimed at a slightly broader audience. “Wanderlust” (which he directed and co-wrote) isn’t his finest work, but it certainly produces laughs.

“Jeff Who Lives at Home” (R) -- Jeff (Jason Segal) is 30, lives in his mother’s basement and doesn’t have much besides a firm belief in des-tiny. His older brother, Pat (Ed Helms), has a wife (Judy Greer), a job and an unimpressive place to live. While running an errand for their mother, Jeff gets caught up in Pat’s neurotic plot to catch his wife cheating. An awkward, funny, authentic story comes together over the rest of that day.

“Project X” (R) -- A handful of middle-class suburban teenagers throw a mega-huge party, and film the whole thing. It’s not a wild prem-ise. The most audacious thing about it is that the movie uses the found-footage perspective, and expects that to bring this non-story to life. The result is 87 minutes of mean-spirited adolescent humor. The characters and filmmakers have seized upon the tenets of repugnant high-school mentality: women are sex objects sent to earth to frustrate young men; anybody different must be ridiculed; and everything is a competition.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Recently obtained in-formation could open a new opportunity for a career change. But temper that Arian impatience and act on it only when all the facts are made available.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re moving into a more active cycle. So put your ideas back on the table, where they’ll be given the attention they de-serve. Expect a favorable change in your love life.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A friend might ask for a favor that you feel would compromise your values. Best advice: Confront him or her and explain why you must say no. A true friend will understand.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship con-tinues to develop along positive lines. Meanwhile, a brewing job situation could create complications for one of your pet projects. Look into it right away.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your interest in a co-worker’s project could lead to a profitable experi-ence for you both. But before you agree to anything, be sure to get all your legal I’s dotted and T’s crossed.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful whose counsel you take about a possible long-dis-tance move. Some advice might not necessarily be in your best interest. Stay focused on your goals.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone might try to complicate efforts in an attempt to work out that confusing job situation. But don’t let that keep you from sticking with your decision to push for a resolution.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A disagree-ment on how to handle a family problem could cre-ate more trouble for all concerned. Look for ways to cool things down before they boil over.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected change in long-standing workplace pro-cedure and policy could provide a new career target for the Archer to aim at. Start making inquires.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re finally able to get back into the swing of things, as those temporary doldrums begin to lift. Expect some surprising disclosures from a new colleague.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Rely on your innate sense of justice to see you through a di-lemma involving a family member. Other relatives who’ve stood back will soon come forward as well.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A new friend seems to be pushing you into taking risks -- finan-cial or otherwise. Best advice: Don’t do it. She or he might have a hidden agenda that hasn’t surfaced yet.

BORN THIS WEEK: You love to see new places and meet new people. Have you considered working for an airline or cruise-ship company?

went on to explain his conclusions about atoms in “New System of Chemical Philosophy.”

• Scottish scientist James Watt was considered a “delicate” child and spent a great deal of his childhood homeschooled by his mother and was considered slow in many academic areas — except for math. Watt eventually invented the steam engine, and after Parliament granted him a patent that prevented anyone else from making a similar machine, Watt went on to control a steam engine dynasty.

• Known as the Father of Geometry, ancient Greek Mathematician Euclid published his ideas in “The Elements,” and his teachings influenced Western mathematics for more than 2,000 years. Since it is estimated that he lived from 325 BC-265 BC, little is known about his life.

• Born into a prominent family of wealth, Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro followed in his family’s footsteps to practice law but couldn’t shake his interest in the natural sciences. He studied physics and math in private for years before he published his hypothesis about molecules that was eventually labeled Avogadro’s Law.

• Immensely famous for his printing press, Johannes Gutenberg began as a goldsmith and businessman before making his contributions as a scientist and inventor. Gutenberg forever altered the method and speed by which books were distributed to the public.

• German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen is known for discovering X-rays and received great recognition for his findings, including streets named in his honor, countless awards and the Nobel Prize in Physics.

• German physician and bacteriologist Robert Koch made a discovery that changed medicine forever: All diseases were not caused by bad air but instead by bacteria. He was able to find the causes of such deadly diseases of tuberculosis, cholera and the cycle of anthrax. Koch won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1905.

• Although he was expected to enter the medical field, Frederick Sanger’s interest in nature and science was too strong. Because of his work with proteins and DNA, Sanger won two Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, one in 1958 and one in 1980. He was the first person to find a protein sequence.

To clean out your coffee grinder in order to use it for spices, add about a half-cup of white rice, then pulverize it. Repeat until scent is gone and rice powder comes out clean.

It’s food-smart to separate utensils and cutting boards used for veggies, meats, poultry, etc. Here’s a handy chef’s trick: Color code. Paint a differ-ent color stripe down the edge of cutting boards and around the handle of utensils for each variety: green for veggies, yellow for poultry and red for beef.

Line the bottom of your dog’s food dish (under-side) with silicone caulk. Use a crisscross pattern in the center. This will keep the dish from sliding around when your pet eats.

“If you are painting your ceiling and are bothered by drips, try protecting your eyes with an old pair of swimming goggles. They will keep your eyes safe from drips and splatters, and fumes will be much less bothersome.” -- E.G.

“I needed a hot water bottle for my legs, but I couldn’t find mine anywhere. My husband sug-gested filling a soda-pop bottle (the 2-liter kind) with hot water and wrapping a towel around it. It worked magically, and I think even better than the regular bottle.” -- C.C.

Pets in Distress

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, my cat “Clark Gable” got very ill -- vomiting frequently and lethargic. I had no idea what was wrong, so I called my veterinarian. The vet’s assistant talked me through some important steps that I didn’t know and wouldn’t have been able to accomplish in my panicked state, such as looking at what C.G. was vomiting up and looking for possible sources of poisoning in my apartment. She ad-vised me to bring him in immediately along with a sample of the vomit (gross, right?) and a couple of possible items he could have eaten. The vet was able to quickly treat C.G., who has made a complete recovery. But I’ve become much more aware that I need to learn when my cat is in distress and how to prevent him getting into dangerous things -- like the houseplant leaves he ingested. I hope you’ll remind readers to educate themselves as well. -- Clarence in Cincinnati

DEAR CLARENCE: Your story is more com-mon than you’d think. Thanks for sharing it.If you have a pet, it’s very important to know that many household items can be dangerous if your pet ingests them. For example, many cats love to chew on the leaves of houseplants -- but many houseplants are extremely poisonous to cats, es-pecially plants from the lily family. Other seem-ingly benign things, like chocolate and onions, can be harmful to pets, especially dogs.Even armed with the knowledge of what can harm your pet, accidents can happen. For exam-ple, a dog can break into the pantry and eat a giant bag of dog food. Make sure to display the phone number of your pet’s veterinarian and the nearest emergency pet hospital near the telephone or on the refrigerator where you can access it should your pet ever be injured, ill or in distress.
