Richard H. NelsonApril 15, 1920 - January 14, 1945

Richard Henry Nelson was born April 15, 1920, in Olivia and moved with his parents Hans and Esther Nelson to Big Stone County in 1932. He

was married to Rholene Haas of Clinton June 6, 1942.

He entered the Army on May 25, 1944. He received basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and he left for overseas duty on December 10, 1944. On January 14, 1945,

Appleton, MinnesotaLearn more at...

Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.

Richard gave his life for his country in action in Belgium.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents, wife and son, Richard Henry Jr. (now of Minneapolis), two brothers: Harlan and Glen of Ortonville; and two sisters: Virginia Elvecrog of Ortonville and Janet Swenson of Appleton. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Maynard A. Nelson. Richard was also buried overseas.

Memorial services were held at First English Lutheran Church of Ortonville on Sunday afternoon, March 4, at 2:00pm, with Rev. L. R. Hanson officiating.

Nelson Street is on the west side of Appleton, one block west of Munsterman Street. This street also bears the name of two other servicemen, Kenneth W. Nelson, & Maynard A. Nelson, Richard H. Nelson’s younger brother.

Puzzle Answers

by Samantha Weaver

• It was German-born theoretical physicist (and sometime philosopher) Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: “An empty stom-ach is not a good political adviser.”

• According to research conducted at Rutgers University, graduate students who are studying business are more likely to cheat than students in any other field of study.

• You’ve almost certainly heard of Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first black American to serve as such. You might not know, though, that he was known to call a court recess at 1 p.m. so he could watch the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”

• Cheese has been around for a long time, and it can last longer than you may think. In Ireland 25 years ago, a hunk of cheese was discovered that dated back 1,700 years -- and it was still edible.

• If you’re like the average person, the hair on your head takes two to three months to grow 1 inch.

• At the 1904 World’s Fair in Saint Louis, it was particularly hot. An ice-cream vendor was doing so much business that he ran out of the cups in which he was serving the ice cream. He looked to the other foodsellers to see if they had any spare containers that would be useful, but he had no luck. Finally, desperate not to lose any more business, he bought some waffles from a nearby vendor and wrapped one around each scoop of ice cream as he sold it. The result was even more popular than ice-cream in a cup, and thus the ice cream cone was born.

Transistor RadioQ: I understand that transistor radios have become

collectible. I have a Coronet "King" pocket radio with two transistors. I have been offered $50 for it. -- Stan, Granite City, Ill.

A: Take the money and run. Your radio, working and in reasonable con-dition, is worth about $20.

• • •Q: I have Cabbage Patch dolls, rein-

deer from McDonald's, Tonka toys, old books and other items. I need to know the values of these items so I can sell them. -- Dorothy, Cortland, N.Y.

A: I suggest you do some research into current values by visiting antique shops and malls in your area. Find a dealer and see if he or she will help you. Most dealers are more than willing to share their expertise, but don't waltz into a shop with a long list expecting them to price each item. It won't happen.

If that is what you need, you should hire the services of a good, certified ap-praiser. I also think current price guides would be helpful. You can find some of the better ones at www.amazon.com. In this sluggish economy, finding buyers and getting top dollar will be difficult.

• • •Q: I have a Decca recording of Bing

Crosby's "White Christmas." I have been offered $25 for it. Should I sell the record or keep it? -- Paul, Davenport, Iowa

A: By all means, sell it. Your record-ing is worth only a couple of dollars. Millions of copies were sold, and it is not rare. Incidentally, it is interesting to note that one of our most popular Christmas songs was written by a Jewish composer, Irving Berlin, while he soaked up the warm sunshine one winter poolside at a resort in Phoenix.

Traditionally the groom, groomsmen and male family members of the wedding couple wear a floral boutonniere on their lapel, but times change-and so do boutonnieres.

The word “boutonniere” looks difficult to pronounce since it’s actually a French word; however, think BOOT-IN-EAR, and the word will just flow off the tongue (just make sure there are no French-speaking individuals within earshot).

Boutonniere actually means “buttonhole” in French-the site of the men’s floral contribution to the ceremony. However, as traditional styles go by the wayside in wedding planning, so does the traditional flower/leaf/ribbon/pearl-ended straight pin assembly.

Free-style wedding décor calls for free-style boutonnieres. Consider these options:• For a seaside-themed wedding, a group of unique shells or a small starfish with a clasp glued to the back• For a Fourth of July or other patriotic-themed wedding, a small flag or a red, white and blue looped ribbon• For a poolside wedding, a paper umbrella with a small ribbon accent• For an Irish-themed wedding, a four-leaf clover (plastic is acceptable if it’s a fun-loving group)• For a music-themed wedding, miniature instruments or eighth notes• For a summer wedding, bumble bees and butterflies• For a sports-themed wedding, miniature baseball and bat,

basketball and hoop or bowling pins and a ball• For a theater-themed wedding, comedy/tragedy masks
