Go Green With These Simple StepsQ: “Going green” seems to be the watchword everywhere, but I don’t have a lot of money or home-improvement skills to make my house more environ-mentally friendly. Do you have any suggestions? -- Gail in Denton, Texas

A: You don’t have to install solar panels or wind turbines to make your home “green.” “Green” living really starts with the individual, not the gadget. Here are a few simple changes to household management you can make almost right away, with little or no monetary investment. • Toss the paper towels and use cotton or linen dishtowels. Linen costs more, but is lint-free and durable.• Turn the refrigerator’s temperature dial up a notch, and clean the coils behind the fridge frequently. Most fridges cool just fi ne in the middle to upper-mid range, and will function more effi ciently if the cooling coils are dust-free.• Turn off the lights -- an easy one, right? You also can gradually replace the old incandescent light bulbs with more expensive but longer-lasting com-pact fl uorescent bulbs.• Store coffee in a thermos. American-style drip brew takes enough energy to begin with; then the coffeepot sits on an electric burner, baking the brew into a bitter sludge. Turn off the coffeemaker once the brew cycle is done. • Don’t run water -- another easy one. If you don’t own a dishwasher, fi ll the sink with hot, soapy water to wash dishes. If you don’t have a double sink, fi ll a tub or bucket with hot water to rinse.• Wash clothes in cold or warm water only, and clean the dryer’s

lint fi lter after every load.• Drain your water heater twice a year to clear out mineral deposits and improve its energy effi ciency.• Start a kitchen composter: toss vegetable scraps and eggshells into an old coffee can and carry out to a larger yard composter every couple of days.• Separate out recyclables, like bottles and cans. If your city doesn’t have a recycling pickup program, many grocery stores have collection machines that give you a few cents back for each item.Starting with the above, you can gradually build an eco-friendly home -- and save a little “green” on the side, if you know what I mean.

HOME TIP: Reducing water and electricity use is a great starting point to making eco-friendly changes to your home -- and you’ll save a little cash, too.

MEASURING UP! (continued):

• What is the longest anyone has stood on one foot? Seventy-six hours and forty minutes, as proved by Aru-lanantham Joachim in Sri Lanka in 1997.• The largest millipede on record belongs to Jim Klinger of Texas. His African giant black millipede measures 15.2 in (38.7 cm) long and has 256 legs.• The world’s longest canal is the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is 5,885 ft (1,794 m) long and was be-gun in 486 B.C.• In 1403, 3,000 Chinese scholars began work on an encyclopedia. It took four years to fi nish and, at the time, was the world’s largest encyclopedia. It had 11,095 volumes and 22,811 chapters.• The oldest tree currently standing is a Great Basin Brittlecone Pine in California. It is named after the Bib-lical character of Methuselah and is estimated to be about 4,800 years old.• There is an older tree – well, root system. The current tree isn’t ancient, but its root system is estimated to have taken hold in Sweden approximately 9,550 years ago after the last ice age. It was discovered in Swedish scientists in 2004.• The world’s longest fi ngernails belong to Shridar Chil-lal of India. His thumbnail alone is over four feet long! He’s been growing his nails since 1952 and his hand is permanently disfi gured from the weight of them.• Bao Xishun of China is currently the world record holder for tallest man. He is 7 ft 8.95 in (2.36 m) tall. Leonid Stadnyk of the Ukraine measures 8 ft 5.5 in (2.5 m), but has refused to let Guinness measure him of-fi cially, so Bao currently holds the title.• The Guinness World Record for smallest dog belongs

to “Heaven Sent Brandy,” a Chihuahua who measures just six inches from her tail to the tip of her nose.• The longest highway belongs to Canada. The Trans-Canada Highway took twenty years to complete and stretches from Victoria, British Columbia to St. John’s, Newfoundland and measures in at 4,860 mi (7,821 km).• The record for oldest animal in the world belonged to Harriet the Galapagos Land Tortoise, who celebrated her 175th birthday back in 2005. Harriet died in 2006, just shy of her 176th birthday and is estimated to have hatched before the Civil War back in 1830.• The longest wall in the world? This one’s easy - it’s the Great Wall of China! But do you know how long it really measures? It stretches and winds over 3,768 mi (6,000 km) across China, is 25 ft (7.62 m) tall and is up to 30 ft (9.14) thick in some sections.• The world’s longest snake ever found was a python in Indonesia. It was found in 1912 and measured over 32 ft 9.5 in (10 m).• The world’s tallest man-made structure hasn’t even been fi nished and it already holds a world record! The Burj Dubai skyscraper in Dubai towers a whopping 2,684 ft (818 m) off the ground. It will have 160 inhabit-able fl oors, the most of any building in the world. It is nearly twice the height of the Empire State Building and will open in September of this year.• The longest interstate is I-90 and runs from Seattle to Boston. It would be a 3,100 mi (5,000 km) trip if you drove it end to end.• The world’s longest mountain range is the Andes. They line the cost of South America, stretching 4,500 miles (7,500 km) from Cape Horn to Venezuela.

(when is the money lost?)

Dear Dave,If you invest in the stock market, and the market goes down, what happens to the money? Is it lost?

DannyDear Danny,This is a great question! So many people misunderstand how investments work when the market declines. No actual money disappears. What goes away is value!Think about it this way. What happens when you buy a car for $25,000 and its value drops to $15,000? There’s no actual money involved. It’s not like you took bills out of your wallet and threw them away, although it may seem like it when you fi rst roll off the showroom fl oor. You bought an item for $25,000, and now, after time has passed, it’s not worth $25,000 anymore. It works the same way with stocks. If you bought a company’s stock at $50 and the price of it drops to $40, that $10 didn’t go anywhere. It’s just lost in terms of market value, or what someone else will pay you for it. Make sense? So many people believe we operate with a fi xed-pie economy. They think money is gone forever if it leaves one place, but this is a faulty premise, because it can just as easily go to another place. My good friend, Rab-bi Daniel Lapin, has a wonderful explanation for how this works. He calls it a comparison of cake versus candles. If you slice a cake and give yourself a bigger piece, there’s less for me. But money isn’t like the cake, it’s like the candles! If you light a candle and use it to

light other candles, no candle is diminished. There is even more light!Communists and socialists believe money is like a cake, and if you get some, there’s less left for me. But if you understand and believe that money is more like the candles, then you’re probably a capitalist. In capi-talism, it doesn’t mean you lose just because I win; it can just as easily mean that we both win. Once you get adjusted to this kind of thinking, the marketplace isn’t nearly as scary!

- Dave

(that’s an outrageous interest rate!)

Dear Dave,We did a rent-to-own deal to buy a musical instrument. We were late paying it off, and the company charged us a $250 late fee and then sold that debt to a collec-tor about four months ago. Now, the collector says we owe $1,800 with interest. We’ve asked them for docu-mentation and tried to talk to them about making pay-ment arrangements, but they’re not interested. What should we do?

KerrDear Kerr,I wouldn’t fool with any documentation at this point. By law you can accrue only so much interest on a bad debt. At this point, they’re charging you 5,000 percent interest, and that’s illegal. Even payday lenders don’t charge this kind of interest, and they’re scum. There’s no way I’d send these clowns $1,800!Get in touch with them and let them know that you’ll send a cashier’s check for $250 if they’ll provide you with a letter stating that the $250 will settle the account in full. If they don’t like this offer and they threaten to sue, tell them to go jump in the lake. I’m sure a judge would love to hear about this!

Breaking the Nest Egg

Even before the market down-turn, workers who save for re-tirement in 401(k) and 403(b) plans lost billions of dollars. The reason? A host of undisclosed fees, which over time can reduce the value of a retire-ment account by half.According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are up to 17 different types of fees that can be deducted from a 401(k). Most of these are sim-ply taken from the account’s earnings, meaning that plan participants never see the fees on their statements.A hidden fee of 1 percent may not sound like much, but it lowers investment returns by 15 per-cent or more over a 30-year period, according to retirement consultants. In 2008, investors in stock mutual funds paid a weighted average of 0.84 percent in expenses. Yet 401(k) and 403(b) investors often paid 3.5 percent or more. In one case, an employee of the South Kitsap School District claimed in a lawsuit that her 403(b) plan is allowed to charge employ-ees up to 12.17 percent per year in fees. One reason the fees are so much higher for 401(k) and 403(b) plans is something called rev-enue sharing. While there are thousands of mu-

tual funds to choose from, the average employer might offer 10 or 20. The funds that are cho-sen are the ones that give back a percentage of fund revenue to the retirement plan administrator. This fi nancial kickback is paid from workers’ re-tirement returns.Today, most employees – if they have a retire-ment plan offered by their employer – rely on some form of defi ned contribution plan instead of the traditional pension plan. Workers have full responsibility for choosing investments, and they take on all the investment risk. In the past, professional pension fund managers made the investment choices, and the employer had the investment risk. The harsh reality is that Americans retiring at age 65 have, on average, enough money in their 401(k) accounts to replace just one year’s household income. According to many fi nancial experts, excessive fees are to blame. For each

of the past two years, legislation has been intro-duced in Congress to provide better disclosure of these fees. But will it be in time?

Make Gardening Fun Again

Have you dusted off your garden-ing gloves yet? I hadn’t planned on having a garden this year. The catalogs that arrived over the win-ter were beautiful ... and enticing. But I thought I’d skip all the bend-ing and stooping that comes with having a vegetable and fl ower gar-den ... until I saw the seedlings at the hardware store. I was hooked all over again. This time, however, I managed to keep my purchases and the size of the garden a bit more manageable.Have you thought that this might be the year you don’t have some-thing growing? There are ways you can experience the satisfac-tion without so much of the work.Consider growing fl owers or herbs in pots right outside your door. Pick the sunny side of the house and remember to keep them well-watered.

Restoring Memorial Day

Once again Sena-tor Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) has tried to get Memorial Day re-stored to its original date, May 30. Right

after the fi rst of the year, he got right on it, as he’s done every single year since 1989. Within days, according to Congressional records, the bill was “Read twice and referred to the Com-mittee on the Judiciary,” where it still sits.Beginning in 1868, Memorial Day was celebrat-ed on May 30. It was a sacred day when the sole purpose was to put fl owers on the graves of those who’d given their lives in battle during the Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include all veterans who’d died in war. It was only in 1971 that the date was changed to be the last Monday in May. Easier for government workers, I guess, to get a full three-day week-end off. (If they want a replacement for Memo-rial Day, why not make Armed Forces Day into a long weekend?)In 2000 we were given “The National Moment

of Remembrance Act,” where, I assume, people all across the country stop what they’re doing at 3 p.m. local time. Its purpose is to “promote greater understanding of the meaning of the Memo-rial Day holiday.”If “a moment” is not enough, and if you want to speak up and either call or send e-mail to voice your opinion about restoring Memorial Day to its original date, go to www.judiciary.senate.gov for info on the Judiciary Commit-tee, where Inouye’s bill still languishes. I did a search for “restore Memorial Day” on its site and found nothing. Or you can thank Inouye for his efforts. His Congressional offi ce num-ber is 202-224-3934.

Grow something others can eat. Even a few rows of car-rots or a trellis full of green beans will produce food that the local shelters would love to have.Grow something lovely for others. Bouquets of fl owers grown on a patio can be dropped off at the hospital for patients who need a day brightener. If vision is a problem, grow vegetables that aren’t green so they can be more easily seen in the leaves. If there is no way you can grow veg-etables or fl owers where you live, look around your town. Many com-munities offer gardening space for seniors, complete with raised beds or vertical trellises that make the work so much easier. Ask at the se-nior center, too.My garden is of a more modest size this year, but I’m already discover-ing that it’s the care and feeding of growing things that brings the sat-isfaction, not how many baskets of green beans I’ll can this summer.

Genes Have a Hand in Stone Formation

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I come from a family of six girls, and I am the young-est. My fi ve sisters all have had gallstones and have had their gallbladders removed. Am I doomed to the same fate?My sisters are large-bodied. I’m not. Could their weight have infl uenced gallstone formation? -- E.H.

ANSWER: Family history of gallstones is a defi nite factor in the risk of coming down with stones. Your family proves the point. However, it’s not the sole factor, so you’re not doomed to having gallstones.Obesity is a strong infl uence on stone formation. On that score, you’re in a safe zone.A high-calorie, high-fat diet disposes a person to gallstones.Rapid weight loss is another factor that favors the development of stones. Cholesterol is the main constituent of most gallstones. Rapid weight loss mobilizes cholesterol from body storage depots, and that’s why it can bring on gallstones.

Estrogen is another contributor to stones. It in-creases the uptake of cholesterol from food, and it increases the amount of cholesterol in bile. Bile is made by the liver. It aids in digesting fat. When bile becomes saturated with cholesterol, stones form. You’re home clear on most of the things that con-tribute to stone formation. You’re not destined to be a victim.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time ago you had a recipe for a natural laxative. I cut it out and used it, and it worked. I stopped using it, but now I need it again and I can’t fi nd it. Would you please, please repeat it? I am in bad shape now. -- R.K.

ANSWER: It’s not my recipe. I got it from someone else. You mix 2 cups of bran with 2 cups of applesauce and 1 cup of unsweetened prune juice. Bran is the stuff removed from grains during refi ning. It’s great fi ber. Fiber keeps undigested food moist as it moves through the digestive tract. You can buy bran in health-food stores.Refrigerate the mixture, and take 2 or 3 tablespoons twice a day.You can add any ingredient you want to this mixture to make it more to your liking -- fruits, nuts, raisins, whatever.

DONOHUE: What does “essential” in front of “hypertension” mean? My doctor writes it down as my diagnosis on every form I give him. I say I have high blood pressure, and that always does it for me. -- J.T.

ANSWER: Essential hypertension is the common kind of hypertension -- high blood pressure. It means there is no other process going on that’s raising blood pressure. “Secondary” hypertension indicates that blood pressure has risen because of some other illness, like an adrenal gland tumor.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. PAWS CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Why Don’t People Like My Dog?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Kip” is really friendly and wouldn’t harm a fl y. When I take him out for walks he likes to go right up to people and sometimes jumps up on them for a friendly pat. But last week, this woman yelled at me, telling me to watch out or she would call animal control! What was her problem? -- Keri in Worcester, Mass.

DEAR KERI: Honestly, the problem wasn’t hers -- it’s yours. I’m sure Kip is a wonderful dog and just as friendly as you say. The trouble is, people on the street don’t know that. They just see a dog running up and jumping on them, and they’re not sure of Kip’s intent.A great many people are terrifi ed of dogs, Keri. It’s no laughing matter, either -- most of those who are fearful of dogs had some traumatic event in their past. But even if they don’t fear them, just the sight of a strange dog charging at them can incite a fear-

ful reaction. It’s also an invasion of people’s privacy -- their per-sonal space -- and just bad etiquette all around to allow your dog to jump on them.As Kip’s owner, it’s your responsibility to control his behavior. The older he gets and the more he’s al-lowed to run up and jump on people, the harder it is to train him out of it. And you need to train him out of this behavior, pronto.I recommend that you sign up for behavior training classes as soon as possible. Attend these sessions with Kip, listen closely to the instructor and follow his or her advice. Remember that pets are a part of our community, and like every other member of a community they must follow some rules in order for everyone to get along. It’s up to you to show Kip how to behave on his daily walks.

PHOTO: Kyle Busch is gunning to beat Richard Pet-ty’s record of 200 Cup victories by winning in three series combined. (Getty Images)

Kyle Busch Is His Own Man

RICHMOND, Va. -- Why is Kyle Busch so good? That is, apart from his obviously impressive skill level.Busch is ambitious. He wants it all. He races in every race he can. At

Richmond, he didn’t just win on Saturday and Sunday nights. He won at Southside Speedway on the previous Thursday night. At age 24, he has 15 Sprint Cup victories, 24 in the Nation-wide Series and 11 in Trucks. That’s a total of 50. Busch’s mind is like a calculator. He’s concocted the notion that may-be he can win 200 races in the three series combined before he hangs up his helmet. In one sense, it’s kind of meaningless. Richard Petty, of course, won 200 Cup races -- and none in the lower series. Combining victories would be like counting the Double-A home runs of a big-league catcher. By that standard, Crash Davis (Kevin Costner’s character in “Bull Durham”) would be in the Hall of Fame. There’s something remarkable, though, in a man who wants to achieve something no one else wanted to try. This is a kid who loves to race ... to an extent that borders on the absurd.

Pull over! See those lights? That might be a dirt track. Let me call my guy on the cell. Maybe he can hitch up the trailer and get my Late Model up here.Busch is also absolutely unafraid of being himself. Many driv-ers are little more than cardboard cutouts. They hide behind the advice of handlers, resting their assumption on the notion that, if they kiss up enough, nice things will be written about them. The driver who has won 11 of NASCAR’s last 46 races shares with the drivers of yore -- Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, Harry Gant, et al. -- a thirst for competition. Busch didn’t grow up in Taylorsville, though. He grew up in Las Vegas. He has that trademark fl air for the dramatic. Why does he bow to the hos-tile masses? He claimed Vegas had nothing to do with it.“I’m here to be myself, man,” Busch said in the wee hours of Sunday after the May 2 Sprint Cup race. “I am who I am. Everybody is who they are, for whatever reason. I don’t think it’s necessarily the way you’re raised or where you’re raised, or whatever. I just think what you believe in, what your beliefs are, what all happens around you as you grow up and stuff.“For me, it’s fun to come out here and, I guess, play the villain role sometimes, and yet be liked other times. It’s always cool to have that aspect in this sport. Even if I wasn’t in this sport, you know, doing something else, you’ve got to be happy with the way you’re living life and doing what you’re doing. Otherwise, it’s not worth living or not worth doing what you’re doing.”
