Military RecordsThere are two good reasons to have a copy of your military records:For family: If something happens to you, your spouse and child will have to get your military records if you’re to be buried in a military cemetery. Make it easy on them and have the paperwork in your files. For health: If you need to file a claim for benefits with the Department of Veterans Affairs, in some cases, being able to prove where you were stationed and when is crucial. Save time by getting your records now and having them on hand.Go online to www.archives.gov/veterans and click Request Military Service Records. Per the instructions, you’ll need to start by getting your DD 214, if you don’t already have it. (If nothing else, you should send for that and always have a copy available.) Click on eVetRecs and follow the steps. Not just anyone can get military records -- it’s limited to either the veteran or a deceased veteran’s next of kin, which is mother, father, spouse, son, daughter, sister or brother. For family members, if the veteran is deceased, be prepared to provide proof of death: a copy of the death certificate, a letter from the funeral home or a published obituary. If you’re not an immediate next of kin, such as a grandchild, you need to complete a SF 180 form. Download one online, fill it out, then mail to one of the addresses on the back of the form. If you cannot print out a form, you can request one from your local VA office or write to:National Personnel Records Center1 Archives DriveSt. Louis, Missouri 63138 If you have an urgent situation, such as burial or medical care, you can call the emergency number at 314-801-0800. You’ll likely wait on hold a long time, but once someone answers you should be able to get the information the same day.

• On Sept. 22, 1776, in New York City, 21-year-old Nathan Hale, a captain in the Continental Army, is executed by the British for spying. Before being hanged, legend holds that Hale said, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” There is no historical record to prove that Hale actually made this statement.

• On Sept. 18, 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building. The building would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it, and it was called into use during the Civil War.

• On Sept. 23, 1846, German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle discovers the planet Neptune. The blue gas giant, which has a diameter four times that of Earth, has eight known moons and a ring system containing three bright and two dim rings.

• On Sept. 21, 1938, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England. Charlie Pierce, a junior forecaster in the U.S. Weather Bureau, was sure that the hurricane was heading for the Northeast, but the chief forecaster overruled him. All told, 700 people were killed by the hurricane.

• On Sept. 19, 1959, in one of the more surreal moments in the history of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev explodes with anger when he learns he cannot visit Disneyland. Government authorities feared that the crowds would pose a safety hazard.

• On Sept. 17, 1965, four adventurous Englishmen arrive at a motor show in Germany after crossing the English Channel by Amphicar, the world’s only mass-produced amphibious passenger car. On land, the cars used a four-speed-plus-reverse manual transmission. In the water, they used a transfer case that had two speeds: forward and backward.

Caffeine is one of the most hotly debated supplements in the nutrition world right now and for good reason. While caffeine is a performance enhancing substance, overuse of caffeine can result in negative consequences and signifi cant performance reduction. The key, as with any supplements, is moderation.

Using caffeine as a performance enhancer is one of the fi rst pre-workout focused supplementation regiments and it harks back to having a “cup of Joe” before going to the gym. The effects of caffeine can be physically manifested in an increase in energy, greater mental focus and a small increase in actual physical performance. To the average person, this means they will feel like working out more and actually get an extra rep or two as compared to their un-supplemented capabilities.

All of that sounds great, so if some caffeine is going to give us these benefi ts, more caffeine must give us greater results, right?

Now is when we get back to the previous statement about moderation. While caffeine does provide all of the previously listed benefi ts, it is also a vasoconstrictor. That means that caffeine can shrink your surface blood vessels and inhibit the delivery of blood to your muscles, so too much caffeine is actually a performance inhibitor. In addition, excessive regular use of caffeine can be addictive and cause other physical issues so we have to be careful how much caffeine we take not only at once, but throughout the day.

So how much caffeine is benefi cial? Do not ever exceed 200mg of caffeine in one serving and, additionally, limit yourself to 300-400mg of caffeine per day. Used correctly, caffeine is one of the most powerful, and effi cient, workout supplements on the market today. If you have any questions that you would like answered regarding general health, nutrition, or fi tness please email Cailan @ [email protected]

Eat Great, Feel Great!

“As Seen on TV” (continued):• “She wore this dangling bead from the hinge

of her glasses for about a year. She traveled to several foreign countries with it in, and people would literally stop her on the streets and ask her where she got this charm,” said Tedeschi. “My mom came to me and said, ‘You have to invent charms for glasses.’”

• For Tedeschi, inventing the “Snap-It Screw” was the easy part. The difficult part was doing all the things necessary to produce and market her new invention. She had to set up patents all over the world. She had to set up a factory in China and a warehouse in Seattle, Washington. She had to spend countless hours marketing her idea to retailers. Today, the “Snap-It Screw” is a success, and Tedeschi says that despite all the hard work, she wouldn’t change a thing.

• “Bling To Go” was invented by Abby Appelt during a period where she was forced to use crutches. She felt the dull metal could use a little pizzazz. So she created some decorative wrap-on decals to give her crutches some personality, and her invention was born.

• Appelt said, “When I wore my crutch décor, I had people stop me, literally everywhere I went, complimenting me on how awesome my crutches were!”

• As Appelt notes, people decorate a million different things with stickers, so it made sense to do likewise with crutches.

• “Bling To Go” works on crutches, canes, walkers and bed poles. It’s a medical grade product that can be sanitized and cleaned, so it presents no health hazard to the user. The company’s slogan is “express your health,” and they back up their words by being active contributors to several physical and emotional health charities.

• Perhaps one of the more peculiar and innovative creations making the invention circuit is the “Bogdon Bass.” It’s a standing bass guitar

whose main component is a cardboard box!• The “Bogdon Bass” is literally a large

cardboard box sealed with tape, with a wooden neck and vinyl strings. It can be played with or without an amplifier. Because of the use of these materials, it is lightweight, inexpensive and recyclable.

• This peculiar instrument was invented by a man named Chris Badynee. He named the instrument after his father, Bogdon.

• “The inspiration to make my Bogdon Box Bass was that I had the desire to own something that I couldn’t afford, so I made one myself,” explained Badynee. “All I wanted was a natural-sounding upright bass for my own home recordings of songs I wrote.”

• After assembling what he thought was just a silly idea only he’d use, Badynee was shocked by how good the makeshift instrument sounded. “[It] sounded so fantastic that I had to tell someone. So I filmed a 60-second video and posted it on the web. I got 1,000 hits on Youtube in less than a day.”

• The video became a bit of a viral sensation, and Badynee was asked by “Good Morning, America” for the right to show the video on their program.

• Almost immediately after the video was shown on television, Badynee received requests to buy a “Bogdon Box.” He brought in his uncle and a couple of acoustic technicians to help him perfect it. Once they got the instrument exactly right, they began selling it on Ebay to a huge response. Hundreds were sold, almost as quickly as they could turn them out.

• Badynee took the profits from those sales to protect and patent his invention. Eventually, his belief in his invention paid off in praise, when his bass was given a rave review in “Bass Player Magazine.”

Food Safety

One of the best kitchen gadgets I’ve ever invested in is a digital thermometer. Within seconds, it tells me the temperature of the food I’m cooking and whether it’s done.

Temperature is one of the most important safety steps in food preparation to avoid food poisoning. To help us stay safe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has created a free booklet especially for us: Food Safety for Older Adults.

It has information we need to know and keep handy: How we get a food-borne illness, and what can happen to us if we do. How to choose lower-risk food options. How long food stays safe in the refrigerator. And much more.

For example, did you know that lunch and deli meats need to be heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit? The bacteria Listeria can grow even at proper 40-degree refrigerator temperature.

My favorite part of the booklet, especially since I now have a high-tech digital thermometer, is the picture chart of the recommended internal temperatures of cooked food. Fish, 145 degrees. Beef, 160 degrees. And so on. (I also invested in two refrigerator/freezer thermometers to make sure the old refrigerator and freezer are keeping food at the correct temperature: 40 degrees for the refrigerator and 0 degrees for the freezer.)

There are a number of steps involved in finding the booklet online, but it’s worth the trouble. Go to www.fsis.usda.gov, click Fact Sheets, At-Risk Populations, More Like This at the bottom of that category, then scroll down to the PDF version of Food Safety for Older Adults. If you can’t find it, send email to [email protected] to request the booklet.

Or call the hotline and request it at 1-888-674-6854.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Casey Mears Runs Out FrontCasey Mears got quite a boost from the circum-stances surrounding the Irwin Tools Night Race.He started on the pole. He didn’t win the pole, but he started there. It wasn’t just luck, though. When rain canceled qualifying, Mears advanced to the top of the lineup because his Ford had been fastest in practice. e Bristol Motor Speedway surface had been reworked since the Sprint Cup Series last vis-ited in March 18.“Where they actually worked on the track (it had been ground near the tops of the turns), we actually haven’t been all the way up there yet,” Mears said before the race. “I’ve seen some guys irting with the edge of it, so it’s really going to be hard to say. If it keeps guys from running up against the wall, I think it could make it a little bit more competitive just because, when guys are running right up against the fence, it’s really hard to pass guys down underneath.”Many didn’t expect Mears, 34, to remain at the front for long. Some didn’t expect him to lead the rst lap, but he did. In fact, Mears’ No. 13 Geico Ford, owned by Steve Germain, led the rst 26 laps. He wound up nishing 21st a er spinning on the 414th of 500 laps.Mears had an impact on the race. He was run-ning 12th as late as lap 375. e Bakers eld, Calif., native was right about it being di cult to pass high. What he and oth-ers didn’t fully grasp was that it would also be di cult to pass low. While competing at Hendrick Motorsports, Mears won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May 2007. He began his career with Chip Ganassi’s team, nishing a career-best 14th in the Sprint Cup point stand-ings in 2006. He then spent two years at Hen-drick and moved to Richard Childress Racing for the 2009 season. Since then, Mears has driven for Germain, Team Red Bull, Tommy Baldwin Jr. and Raymond Key.Mears comes from one of America’s great rac-ing families. His uncle, Rick, is one of three men to win the Indianapolis 500 four times. His father, Roger, is a legend in o -road racing, which is where Casey began his career.Casey has won in NASCAR, ARCA, Grand American and Indy Lights.***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for e Gaston (N.C.) FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

SUNSET BOULEVARD As one of Los Angeles’ most popular entertainment districts and tourist destinations, Sunset Boulevard is home to a variety of trendy restaurants, nightclubs, attractions, shopping spots and much more.• Sunset Boulevard is an approximately 22-mile-

long, immensely famous street beginning in downtown Los Angeles and continuing west toward the Pacific. It eventually becomes Sunset Strip as it runs through Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Santa Monica and ends at the ocean.

• The boulevard is a direct link between the lower-income areas of Hollywood and the lush, incredibly upscale ones. As the road continues west, it undergoes several transformations. It gives tourists the ability to experience both sides of Hollywood and is rich with sights and attractions all along the way.

• It encompasses a surplus of must-see sites including Echo Park, Hollywood Memorial Park, Paramount Studios, KTLA Studios, Fox Network, Columbia Square and the iconic Sunset Grill made famous by Don Henley’s song.

• It is at least four lanes its entire duration, and thanks to its curvy, winding route and frequent

traffic congestion, car accidents are prevalent. • It is sometimes referred to as “Guitar Row,” as

it is home to a wide selection of guitar stores and music-industry-related buildings.

• One of the most famous nightclubs in the ‘40s and ‘50s was the glamorous Earl Carroll Theatre on Sunset, said to host the most beautiful girls in the world. After it was sold,

it functioned as Moulin Rouge for a number of years.

Sunset Boulevard (Continued):• Hollywood High School, built in 1904, is on

Sunset Boulevard and has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful schools in the state. Many famous entertainment personalities are among its graduates.

• The iconic thoroughfare inspired the popular

1950s feature film “Sunset Boulevard,” starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. There was also a 1993 musical named “Sunset Boulevard” that starred Glen Close.

• Sunset Boulevard has been highlighted on TV shows, album covers and in song names, including the 1960s TV series “77 Sunset Strip” and the 1990s’ “Below Sunset.”

• The best known section of Sunset Boulevard is Sunset Strip, which before its glory days, was nothing more than scattered buildings and nurseries. Once the movie industry took off, studios and glamorous houses began popping up everywhere. It was once called Beverly Boulevard.• Sunset Strip is about 1.5 miles long. It got its name because many Los Angeles County workers referred to it as “that strip” for years.• Sunset Boulevard can brag that it has hosted most of the early motion picture companies; the area near the intersection

of Gower Street was famous for the many Westerns made there. However, this section was also known as “Poverty Row,” as many of the films made there failed.

• Although many film companies popped up, the smaller ones tended to end quickly — some of them included California Film Co., Century Film Co., H. Paulis Studio and Francis Ford Studio.

‘Dry Basement’ Springs a Leak

Q: Our basement was outfitted as a “dry base-ment” several years ago and then finished to be-come additional living space, which we use as a rec room and for storage. I’ve noticed a musty smell for some time, and after heavy rains last week I saw water pooling near a corner of the basement. However, I can’t find the source of the leak. What can I do? -- Tara in St. Louis

A: It sounds like there is a leak somewhere in the foundation. You’re right to be looking at that one corner as the most likely source of the water leak, but determining where the water is entering may be difficult.Dry basements are made so through a number of techniques, including directing rainwater away from your home’s foundation. This is accomplished through surface drainage (such as your home’s gutter system) as well as sub-surface drainage, which stops water which has percolated through the surface from entering the basement.Subsurface drainage is typically put in place at the time of a home’s construction. This includes

during the summer months to combat excess humidity and minor condensation.

sloping the ground beneath the planned base-ment floor to direct water away from the house, adding a gravel layer and a nonpermeable layer above that, and then pouring the basement’s concrete floor. Basement walls should be sealed on the outside at the time of construction.Over time, concrete basement walls can devel-op tiny cracks that let more moisture through. This may be happening in your basement. There may be a larger crack near your home’s foun-dation that is letting more water in, or perhaps something has changed in the way runoff moves away from your home’s foundation. Patch larger cracks in the driveway or in masonry or concrete surrounding your home.Check the exterior of your house. Is the gutter system in good repair? Where do the drain-spouts end? They should extend out from the foundation. If rainwater is pouring directly onto the foundation, it could be seeping more rapidly into the basement. If none of these seem to be a problem or don’t clear up the leakage issue, contact a profes-sional contractor who specializes in basement moisture problems to snoop out deeper issues.

HOME TIP: Use a humidifier in the basement

Kids and Dogs

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A while ago, you printed information on how to safely approach strange dogs. I’d like my two children to be familiar with those procedures. Can you provide that information? -- Candice C., Las Vegas

DEAR CANDICE: I sure can. Here are a few tips courtesy of the American Kennel Club on how to safely approach a strange dog:--Ask permission: It’s very important to ask a dog’s owner first if you can pet the dog. Not every dog reacts the same way to strangers petting them, and the owner will know if the dog is friendly and if it is safe for you to approach.

--Approach calmly: If the owner says yes, make a fist, extend your hand slowly to the dog, and let it sniff the back of your hand. Dogs recognize people by scent, so letting it sniff your hand lets the dog become familiar with you.--Where to pet: Once the dog has sniffed your hand, pet it gently under the chin or on the chest.--Don’t hug dogs: Kids should never hug a dog. Dogs don’t hug each other, and they don’t understand hugs to mean love and affection like humans do. Wrapping your arms around a dog can stress it out and lead to an unnecessary bite.--Keep your chin up: Never put

your face down in front of a dog. This can be threatening to the dog and cause it to react. Find out more about safely approaching dogs and about the AKC’s upcoming “Meet the Breeds” event at http://www.akc.org/meet_the_breeds/.

• It was American singer Josh Groban who made the following sage observation: “There’s no half-singing in the shower, you’re either a rock star or an opera diva.”

• If you’re considering having a child sometime in the near future, you might want to consider this: It’s said that the cost of caring for a newborn during its first year of life is more than $6,000.

• In 1986, actor and director Clint Eastwood took on a new and unfamiliar role: political candidate. He ran for mayor of Carmel, Calif. He defeated the incumbent mayor in a landslide, and he kept the position for two years. His salary? A whopping $200 per week.

• Often these days you’ll see someone carrying a tiny dog around with them, but you might be surprised to learn that this is not an entirely new fashion. In ancient Rome and Greece it was not uncommon for a noble lady to carry her tiny Maltese dog around in the sleeve of her robe.

• In the early days of motion pictures, Will H. Hays became known as the “Czar of Hollywood.” He presided over the earliest incarnation of the MPAA, charged with ensuring the morality of movies. Some of the changes the so-called “Hays Office” insisted upon were removing the image of a cow’s udder from a Walt Disney cartoon; and removing any direct reference to adultery in the 1935 adaptation of the Tolstoy novel “Anna Karenina” -- despite the fact that Anna’s affair is at the heart of the novel.

• Those who study such things say that a woman’s sense of smell tends to be better than that of a man. ***Thought for the Day: “I think that I am better than the people who are trying to reform me.” -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
