ZOO (continued):• Although the word “hippopotamus” translates from the Greek for “river horse,” this herbivorous mammal is more closely related to the pig. It ranks third in size in land animals, right behind the elephant and rhinoceros. Baby hippos are born underwater and weigh about 100 lbs. (45 kg) at birth. By adulthood, one might weigh as much as 5,800 lbs. (2,631 kg). Hippos eat about 88 lbs. (40 kg) of food daily. At one time, hippos’ ivory canines, which reach 20 inches (51 cm) in length, were used by dentists for artificial teeth because they don’t turn yellow. In a zoo environment, a hippo will live about 50 years.

• Even with its enormous bulk, the rhinoceros can trot along at 40 mph (64 km/hr). The word “rhinoceros” translates from the Greek language, rhino meaning “nose” and ceros meaning “horn.” A baby rhino enters the world weighing about 140 lbs. (63.5 kg) and can grow to about 7,000 lbs. (3,500 kg).

• You think your blood pressure is high? Consider that of the giraffe, whose pressure is two to three times higher than that of a healthy human. That’s because of that long neck! The heart of a giraffe measures 2 feet (.6 m) long and weighs 25 lbs. (11.3 kg), enabling it to pump blood with enormous force up the neck to the brain. The average giraffe stands about 19 feet (5.8 m) tall, 6 feet (1.8 m) of which are its legs. At birth it was already 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, and had endured a 6-foot drop to the ground head first! The baby calf is up and walking around only one hour after birth. An adult giraffe can weigh up to 3,000 lbs. (1,360 kg) and lives about 20 years.• The sleek cheetah, the world’s fastest mammal, can reach a speed of 45 mph (72 km/hr) in two seconds from a standstill. It then accelerates to its top speed of nearly 65 mph (104 km/hr). Yet just 300 yards farther on, exhaustion sets in, and the animal must slow down. Half of the cheetah’s running time is spent off the ground, and it can even make a turn in mid-air!

• An African elephant weighs upwards of 6 tons (5,443 kg), stands 12 feet (4 meters) tall at the shoulder, and has a trunk about 7 feet (2 meters) long. It consumes about 300 lbs. (136 kg) of food in a day, and sucks up about 2 gallons (7.5 liters) of water into its trunk each time it takes a drink. The elephant is second behind human beings in longevity, with many elephants living well past age 70. • A gorilla may look gargantuan, but in truth the average male gorilla stands only about 5”7” (1.7 m) tall. He is a hefty fellow, however, weighing in at 330 lbs. (150 kg).

The female is much smaller, averaging 176 lbs. (80 kg). The lifespan of these very peaceful, family-oriented creatures in the wild is about 35 years, but they will live to about age 50 in a zoo.

• An adult male lion eats about 15 lbs. (7 kg.) of meat at a meal, although some might consume as much as 60

lbs. (27 kg) at one sitting! The full-grown adult male will weigh somewhere between 330 and 550 lbs. (150 – 259

kg) and can run at top speed of 36 mph (58 km/hr), although not for very long. In the wilds, the King of the Jungle isn’t the great hunter you might think he is – he actually leaves more than 90% of the hunting to his female companion. Lions are the only big cats in which the appearance of

males and females is distinctly different. The roar of a male can be heard as far as 5 miles (8 km) away.

• Bear with us! An American black bear will reach about 660 lbs. (299 kg) at maturity, and a grizzly bear tops out at 860 lbs. (390 kg), but it’s the polar bear that takes the prize, a whopping 1,760 lbs. (798 kg)! It’s the only bear that will actually prey on humans. Humans aren’t their first choice, however. In their natural habitat, they prefer seal pups, and can smell a seal on the ice 20 miles (32 km) away. The bears frequently eat only the seal’s fat just below the skin, ignoring the rest of the carcass, making for an extremely fatty diet. Yet it doesn’t seem to slow them down! A polar bear can sprint along at a speed of 25 mph (40 km/hr) for short distances, as well as jump a 6-ft.-high (1.8-m) pile of snow.

• The koala bear isn’t a bear at all, but is actually a member of the marsupial family, joining the kangaroo, wallaby, and opossum. The koala’s diet consists of nothing but eucalyptus leaves, about a pound and a half per day. In fact, the koala would be extinct without the eucalyptus. Sounds like a pretty boring feed, but consider that there are about 600 kinds of eucalyptus trees and to the koala, each one tastes different. If you think your teenager is lazy, consider

that the koala sleeps an average of 22 hours per day! There have been koalas at the famous San Diego Zoo since 1925 when the children of Sydney, Australia gifted the zoo with Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL

The west end of Washington D.C.’s National Mall is home to the majestic Lincoln Memorial, a monument dedicated to America’s 16th president. Here are the facts and figures about this symbol of freedom honoring the “Great Emancipator.”

• The building site of the memorial wasn’t even in existence at the time of Lincoln’s death. The Washington Monument stood at the edge of the Potomac River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deepened the river in the late 1800s, and all the silt was deposited along the banks, creating a new land formation. Although the Lincoln Memorial Association was

established two years after Lincoln’s death, the monument site wasn’t selected until 1901. In 1911, President Taft signed a bill allotting $2 million for the construction, which began in 1914.

• The style of the building, designed by Henry Bacon, is that of an ancient Greek temple, 100 feet (30 meters) high, surrounded by an open portico, constructed from Colorado marble. Thirty-six fluted columns border the open court, symbolic of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination in April of 1865, just six days after the end of the Civil War. In the area above the columns are 48 stone garlands and the names of the 48 states in the Union when the Memorial was completed and dedicated in 1922.

• To the north and south of the central hall are chambers whose walls are inscribed with the words of Lincoln’s

most famous speeches, his second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address.

• Above these inscriptions are 60 x 12-foot (18 x 3.7-m) murals, painted with special mixtures of paint, kerosene, and wax, formulated to protect the scenes from the elements. The paintings feature principles followed by Lincoln throughout his life, including freedom, liberty, justice, unity, fraternity, charity, and the law.

• In the central hall sits Lincoln, immortalized in marble, 19 feet tall (5.8 m) and weighing 175 tons. The original plans called for a 10-ft-tall (3-m) Lincoln, but it was enlarged so that the statue would not be dwarfed by the huge chamber. It took four years to complete the sculpture out of Georgia white marble. Six Italian men, the Piccirilli Brothers, carved the statue in the South Bronx under the supervision of the sculptor Daniel French, and it was shipped to Washington

in 28 separate pieces. (The Piccirillis were also responsible for creating the two enormous sculpted lions in front of the New York City Public Library.) If the giant Lincoln were able to stand up, he would be 28 feet (8.5 m) tall. Above Lincoln’s likeness is an inscribed epitaph, “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

• Adding to the height of Lincoln’s statue is an oblong pedestal of Tennessee marble, and another marble platform beneath the pedestal, which increase the height by another 10.5 feet (3.2 m). • When the monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1922, by President Warren Harding, Lincoln’s only remaining son, Robert Todd Lincoln, age 79, was in attendance. Ranked seventh on the “List of America’s Favorite Architecture,” the Lincoln Memorial receives about 6 million visitors annually.

Thumbs Down, Chiefs Fans

The first time you go to a live NFL game or stand on the sideline of one as a non-player or coach, the first thing you are struck by is how hard the players strike one another. The sheer velocity, the power of the tackler and the punishment inflicted on the person absorbing the blows from blocking or tackling is jarring.

When the Chiefs signed Matt Cassel in 2009, he was coming off a good year. After the Kansas City Chiefs knocked Tom Brady out of the season opener, Cassel led the team to a 10-5 record, threw for 3,600-plus yards and 21 touchdowns. After a rough season, Cassel led the Chiefs to the playoffs, posting similar numbers only to lose to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round, 10-7.

Last week, game five of the 2012 season, the Chiefs lost to the Ravens again ... this time 9-6. But the Chiefs lost Cassel to a concussion, and the Chiefs fans lost a good amount of their reputation as some of the best fans in sports.

They cheered Cassel -- now way out of favor in KC -- when he was taken out of the game. I couldn’t hear what happened, but I find it hard to believe that a majority did. Some surely cheered him walking off the field on his own, others may have cheered Brady Quinn, the backup

entering the game.

Lineman Eric Winston spoke for the players after the game.

“We are athletes. We are not gladiators. This is not the Roman Coliseum. People pay their hard-earned money when they come in here, and I believe they can boo, they can cheer and they can do whatever they want, I believe that ... there are long-lasting ramifications to the game we play. I’ve already kind have come to the understanding that I won’t live as long because I play this game, and that’s OK, that’s a choice I’ve made and a choice all of us have made.

“But when you cheer, when you cheer somebody getting knocked out, I don’t care who it is, and it just so happened to be Matt Cassel -- it’s sickening. It’s 100 percent sickening. ... I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than in that moment right there. ... [Cassel’s] a person, and he got knocked out in a game, and we have 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out?”

It may not have been 70,000 cheering, but in a league that is getting increasingly violent, where it’s impossible for one man to win a game on his own, even if a few hundred cheered Cassel’s injury, it was one too many.

Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City.

NO-NO’SWe all know that a no-no is something we shouldn’t do – it may even be forbidden! But there are plenty of other words that are “no-“ words that bear looking in to. Here are some unusual terms, all beginning with those same two letters.

• About 3.6% of American adults have engaged in noctambulism in the past year. Simply put, they have sleepwalked! This condition is more prevalent in children, aged 6 to 12, and more often with boys. Although the exact cause is not known, it can be heightened by stress, fatigue, and sleep deprivation. Certain medications can also contribute to its frequency.

• Before a bullfighter is a matador, he is a novillero, an apprentice bullfighter who fights bulls that are only three years old and under. It might seem that the word takes it origin from “novice,” but the Spanish word for “young bull” is novillo.

• Those who are notaphilists have the interesting hobby of collecting banknotes and paper currency, not to be confused with numismatists, who collect coins. Notaphilists narrow down the type of banknotes they’d like to collect, for example, favorite geographical locations, time periods, or security features of the design.

• Dentists have been using Novocaine as a local anesthetic since 1905. Procaine hydrochloride is its chemical name, while Novacaine is the trademark name. You can expect its effects to kick in within two to five minutes, with an

average duration of one to one-and-a-half hours. It’s the oldest man-made anesthetic. Prior to its invention, dentists actually used cocaine as anesthetic! When cocaine’s addictive nature was discovered, scientists went to work on an alternative.

• Two different meanings for the same word couldn’t be farther apart. A noisette is a variety of rose, a beautiful climbing variety with apricot-yellow blossoms that grows to a height of 12 feet (3.7 m). But it’s also a small piece of veal, lamb, mutton, or beef tenderloin that usually sautéed in lemon juice and assorted seasonings.

• Those things having to do with a hospital are referred to as nosocomial. For example, a nosocomial infection is one that a patient picks up during a hospital stay, such as a

Vegetarian Men at Reduced Risk

for Heart Disease

Vegetarian men weigh less and have less cardiovascular disease risk, compared with nonvegetarians, according to a new study in Nutrition and Metabolism. Researchers in China compared 171 vegetarians to 129 age-matched nonvegetarians and found that the vegetarian men’s weight, blood pressure, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels were lower, compared with the meat-eaters. The vegetarians’ arterial walls were healthier, as well.

Researchers have known for years that Westerners adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet are healthier than meat-eaters. This new study shows that, even within a country where rice and other plant foods are staples, those who avoid meat completely are better off than those who include

even modest amounts of meat.

lifestyle changes Vital forPreventing cancer

Lifestyle changes like eating a healthy diet, exercising, and limiting alcohol could prevent about 340,000 cancer cases per year in the United States, according to a new report released by the American Institute for Cancer Research for World Cancer Day. Worldwide, cancer is a leading cause of death accounting for 7.6 million deaths and 12.7 million new diagnoses per year. Lifestyle changes could decrease cancer risk by 38 percent for breast cancer, 45 percent for colon cancer, and 47 percent for stomach cancer.

For Weight loss, Food choices Play Bigger Role than exercise

Food intake has a larger impact on weight loss than exercise, according to a new study in the International Journal of Obesity. A review of school-based interventions found that weight loss could be achieved by diet changes alone, while exercise without diet changes was not effective. Researchers explain it is difficult to “out-exercise” dietary

intake. For example, a one-hour bicycle ride burns 240 calories and, in comparison, one small order of French fries—which are consumed in much less than an hour—contains nearly the same number of calories.

Higher Fiber Intake for a longer life

Higher fiber intake is associated with significantly lower risk of dying, according to a study published online this week. Researchers looked at diet records from 219,213 people who were part of the NIH (National Institutes of Health)-AARP Diet and Health Study. Those who ate the most fiber had lower risks of death from cardiovascular disease and infectious and respiratory diseases, compared with participants who ate the least. Men who ate the most fiber also had a lower risk of cancer death, compared with men who consumed the least. Women with the highest fiber intake showed a non-statistically significant lower risk of death from cancer.Fiber is only found in foods from plants, such as beans, grains, vegetables, and fruits

Alzheimer’s Is No. 1 Cause of Dementia

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please give me information on Alzheimer’s disease. I am very active. I would appreciate anything you can tell me about this illness. -- H.N.

ANSWER: Alzheimer’s disease is the No. 1 cause of dementia. Dementias are illnesses that lead to progressive loss of mental function. With Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss is prominent, especially loss of memory for the recent past and a loss of the ability to retain new information in the memory bank.

Alzheimer’s patients have great difficulty finding even simple words to express themselves. They become lost in familiar places. As the illness progresses, they find it

difficult to perform simple tasks, like dressing themselves. Judgment becomes poor. In summer they might wear clothes suited for winter. Numbers lose all meaning to them. Frequently, they become confused and suspicious. They no longer recognize the faces of close family members.

The brains of those with Alzheimer’s shrink because brain cells are lost. With microscopic examination of an Alzheimer’s brain, deposits of amyloid, a protein material, are seen. They look like lumps of lava from a volcano, and they presumably kill off brain cells and block communication between them. Tangles of another protein called tau also are scattered through the brain. What leads to the formation of these proteins is as yet unknown.

No medicine cures Alzheimer’s disease, but some medicines slow its progress. Three medicines increase the brain’s supply of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that permits brain cells to communicate with each other. Those medicines are Aricept (donepezil), Exelon (rivastigmine) and Razadyne (galantamine). Namenda (memantine) is a fourth medicine that works in a different way.

The booklet on Alzheimer’s disease discusses this prevalent illness in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 903W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As a child, my mother made me drink eight glasses of water every day. She said water flushed out poisons. Does it? -- B.D.

ANSWER: No, it doesn’t. The average, healthy person

can let thirst be the guide to the need for fluid. All fluids count, not just water.

I am positive I will hear from people who say I should mention the diuretic effect of some fluids, but there actually is a net gain of fluid to the body even from drinks that encourage urine production.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read your article on osteoporosis, as I have it. I was put on Actonel (risedronate) by my former doctor. My new doctor had me switch to Fosamax (alendronate) when it came out as a generic. This doctor says you must take vitamin D and calcium also. Are they necessary? -- B.G.

ANSWER: They are necessary. They work hand in hand with osteoporosis medicines. Calcium is the mineral needed for strong bones. Vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium from the digestive tract into the blood. Not having a supply of these two is like trying to build a sandcastle without sand.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

• It was 20th-century American author and actress Cornelia Otis Skinner who made the following sage observation: “One learns in life to keep silent and draw one’s own confusions.”

• If you grew up during a certain era in the United States, you are probably familiar with the board game Parcheesi. If you have a particularly good memory, you may recall that the game’s subtitle is “The Royal Game of India.” You may not realize, though, that the game is so-called because royalty in India used to play a life-size version of the game in gardens specially designed for the pursuit. Centuries ago, rajas would dress members of their harems in brightly colored costumes and use them as game pieces.

• Everyone knows that a sophomore is someone in his or

her second year of high school or college. Most people don’t realize, though, that the word is derived from the Greek words “sophos,” which means “wise,” and “moros,” which means “stupid.”

• It’s not unusual for music critics and the artists they critique to butt heads, but they usually do it in print, not in person. In 1978, though, the staff of Rolling Stone magazine and the band the Eagles went head-to-head in a softball match. The writers ended up losing to the rock stars.

• The creator of the ubiquitous smiley face earned a grand total of $45 for his creative effort.

• Having trouble with your teenager? It’s a worldwide problem, it seems -- though not always for the same reasons. In 2004, a 13-year-old boy in India ran away from home, declared that he was a Hindu holy man and founded a monastery. His parents arranged for him to be kidnapped and brought back home.

• When you’re in a hurry, dry erase markers and permanent markers sometimes look the same. Ever grabbed a marker to write a note on a dry-erase white board and found that it wouldn’t wipe off? To remove permanent marker from a white board, try using a pencil eraser. Rub lightly on the marker areas only, working from the outside in. It should come off.

• Many more of us nowadays are using reusable fabric shopping bags. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. These fabric bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss the bags in the washing machine. Hang to dry, and you’ll be carrying around a much cleaner bag!

Kids: Birthday Party MenusBirthdays and other parties are a time for joy and celebration—and healthful food choices can be part of the fun. When you’re the host, it’s easy to serve vegetarian versions of party favorites. If you are a guest, you may wish to bring a dish or dessert to pass around at the party.

Try these healthy food ideas:Hot dogs: Vegan hot dogs are widely available. Try some of the following brands: Lightlife Smart Dogs or Tofu Pups, Yves Veggie Wieners or Tofu Wieners. Baked beans, veggie chili, relish, ketchup, and mustard go well with any of these.

Veggie burgers: You’ll find them at most grocery or health–food stores. Try some of the following brands: Boca Burgers, Garden Vegan, or Harvest Burgers. Add the usual toppings—ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, or relish.

Pizza: Spread tomato sauce on plain bagels or English muffins and top them with a variety of fresh vegetables, such as chopped onions, mushrooms, peppers, broccoli, or olives. Add a sprinkle of soy cheese, if you like. A party idea for children is to make or purchase pizza dough and cut the dough into a variety of shapes. Have the children add the toppings and bake.

Pair any of these with simple but delicious favorites such as corn–on–the–cob, applesauce, steamed carrots, or “squeezy beans” (known to adults as boiled soybeans in the pod).

Or create your own birthday tradition with something new:

Burrito bar: Prepare burrito fillings such as black or pinto beans, steamed cut corn, mashed sweet potatoes, rice, tomatoes, scallions, cilantro, lettuce, and salsa. Steam

flour tortillas and make the youngest partygoers a burrito to order. Allow older children to build burritos themselves.

Potato boats: Bake whole russet potatoes and scoop out the insides. Keep the skins—these will be the “boats.” Mix the potato filling with sautéed mushrooms and diced mixed vegetables such as peas, carrots, corn, onions, and green beans. Add plain soymilk to moisten the mixture and season with herbs and a bit of black pepper. Stuff the mixture back into the potato boats and decorate the tops with red, green, or yellow pepper, broccoli florets, and other colorful vegetables. Bake until veggies are cooked and serve potato boats warm with mild salsa.

Garden platter: Arrange cooked sweet potato slices, baked tofu chunks, cucumber slices, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, sweet red and yellow peppers, and broccoli “trees” on a platter. For a creative touch, arrange these colorful foods in a design or a favorite shape. Serve with easy bean dip or cheesy garbanzo spread.

Dessert Ideas:Fruit smoothies using soy or rice milk and frozen fruit are fun and delicious. You can turn smoothie making into a party activity. Try putting fruit out in bowls and letting the kids choose fruits to make their own special flavors.

Watermelon slices always go over well with kids. Or prepare a fruit salad, cutting the fruit into a variety of shapes.

Foreclosure Defense.... It’s About Justice!

I have been asked, many times, over the past several years of handling foreclosure defense cases, by friends, family, and other attorneys, what is foreclosure defense? There is routinely a follow up of, “aren’t you just trying to buy people time, isn’t that all you can do?” Sometimes helping a client obtain extra time is their goal and as a lawyer, the client’s goals and best interest is critical. However, for me, foreclosure defense is so much more. It’s about justice!

Our nation is a nation of laws, to be applied equally to all. The words “and justice for all” are not just a part of our Pledge of Allegiance. They are heartfelt principals that people have fought and died to help achieve and preserve.

During the run up to the financial crisis, some banks turned into sophisticated con-artists. They pushed home loans to people they knew, or should have known, couldn’t afford them. Then they bundled those loans together into Wall Street securities and paid off rating agencies to rate them as AAA, good as gold, when behind the scenes they were calling them “sacks of cr_ _” and placing bets against them so they could collect even more money when they knew these securities would fail. These banks sold their toxic investments to everyone and anyone, local governments, foreign governments, individuals, and pension funds of our citizens, retirees, veterans, and more. In the end, as most of the Wall Street

insiders knew they would, these “securities” failed. The big banks made billions selling them and billions more when they collapsed, collecting on their bets. To add insult to injury, when the companies that backed these devious wagers couldn’t pay off the Wall Street gamblers, the US taxpayers and Main Street stepped in to bail them out. Then, if you weren’t upset about that, what happened next should tip the scales. In the year after the bailout and the crisis, Wall Street executives took in more money in bonuses and salaries then they did in any year during the

heyday.

To date, not one major Wall Street figure has been prosecuted or held accountable. Most of the CEO’s behind the wheel during the crisis are still in power, placing the same risky bets to this day. This is outrageous! What happened to our nation of laws? What happened to holding people accountable for misleading and hurting others? What happened to “justice for all”?

So for me, foreclosure defense is partly my way, one case at a time, of holding Wall Street and the banks that committed these crimes accountable. This is the civil rights movement of our time. You and I are being asked to sit on the back of the bus while others with big

power and influence get a free ride in the front row. I use foreclosure defense and every state and federal law and rule of procedure I can to expose fraud, false documents, “robo-signing”, servicing errors, misapplication of payments, evidentiary violations, discovery violations, illegal collection practices and more to ultimately create leverage. In some cases, that’s enough to make the phone ring with a fair offer on the other side. In others, I also

need to prepare a Broker’s Price Opinion and educate the bank as to the true fair market value of a property so they understand that even if they are able to foreclose, they will be far better off working something out with you.

Regardless, of the client’s goals, be it obtaining more time, working out a loan modification, principal reduction, short sale, cash for keys, deed-in-lieu, waiver of deficiency or more, I know of one best way to increase the chances of getting there, attack! Sun-Tzu, the great military strategist, knew that the best defense is a strong offense and in law, a strong offense can see that justice prevails.

If you or anyone you know is facing foreclosure, struggling with debt, or contemplating a real estate transaction, please call or e-mail us today for a free consultation. Let the lawyers and staff at the Law Offices of Evan M. Rosen, P.A. serve you!

HOLLYWOOD -- The Oscars, in an effort to attract younger viewers, have named Seth MacFarlane to host the Feb. 24 Oscar broadcast. He’s a successful writer and creator of “Family Guy,” for which he won two primetime Emmys, and several other animated shows. Even though he directed and provided the voice for the title character of “Ted,” which grossed $434 million at the box office, MacFarlane’s face has never been on a movie screen.

In his favor, he hosted the 2010 Writer’s Guild Awards, three Comedy Central roasts (for David Hasselhoff, Donald Trump and Charlie Sheen) and successfully hosted “Saturday Night Live.” Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who are producing the show, gave us “Hairspray,” best picture Oscar-winner “Chicago” and the TV show “Smash,” about Marilyn Monroe. They said they were looking for “the most versatile person we could get (who) would give the show the diversity that we wanted.” MacFarlane is an accomplished singer and comedy writer, which is an asset since the producers are likely to have several musical numbers in the show.

But, is it the host who attracts younger viewers? In 1998, the 70th annual Oscars was the highest-rated show of all time, with 57.25 million viewers. That year “Titanic” was nominated 14 times and won 11 Oscars. But more importantly, that was the year “Titanic” became the top-grossing film of all time. Many people had seen it, and

they wanted to see what it would win. Granted, Billy Crystal delivered an Emmy Award-winning performance as emcee.

This year was the perfect opportunity to capitalize again on the No. 3 top-grossing film of all time (just behind

“Titanic” and “Avatar”), “The Avengers.” In the past, rotating hosts were used to add star power, and what could be better than having Robert Downey, Jr. (nominated for “Chaplin” and “Tropic Thunder”), Gwyneth Paltrow (who won for “Shakespeare in Love”), Samuel Jackson (nominated for “Pulp Fiction”), Mark Ruffalo (nominated for “The Kids Are All Right”), Jeremy Renner (nominated for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town”), plus Chris Evans (“Captain America”), Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) and Scarlett Johansson?

“The Avengers” saved the Earth; they could easily save Oscar’s ratings!

And speaking of saving ... Tyler Perry, who had aspirations of starting his own network, is coming to Oprah Winfrey’s rescue. Her OWN station reportedly has cost her more than $240 million because viewers didn’t follow her as she’d hoped. Perry will bring two original scripted shows to OWN in an effort to bring his “Medea” followers to the Oprah Winfrey Network. He’ll try to turn Oprah’s “House of Payne” (one of Perry’s syndicated shows) into a house of gain!

When Couple Splits, Who Gets the Pets?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My boyfriend and I called it quits last month after six years together. While we lived together we adopted two beautiful dogs, “Gelly” and “Robie.” We both love the dogs but aren’t sure what to do. He wants to keep them, and so do I. Any suggestions? -- Janice H., Providence, R.I.

DEAR JANICE: Pets are so much a part of our families these days that when a relationship breaks down, custody of those pets can cause as much acrimony as a struggle for custody of children. To many people, pets are their

children. So settling on who gets the dogs can be a difficult process.

Even if you can’t cooperate on anything else, strive to cooperate on creating a plan for both of you to spend time with the dogs. I have friends who have set up visitation rules for their pets -- one person gets the pets for a week, the other person gets them for another week. Another ex-couple decided after several months of sharing that one would keep their three dogs all the time and the other would visit each weekend.

In a breakup, pets can suffer quite a bit of stress. The dynamics of the household have changed, patterns of their humans’ behavior have changed, and one human isn’t around anymore. This alone can cause noticeable behavioral changes in your dogs, so pay close attention to them. Gelly or Robie may seem more active or hyperactive, or eat less and not be as active. Both you and your ex need to give them plenty of encouragement and love during this time.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. If your question or comment is printed in the weekly column, you’ll receive a free copy of “Fighting Fleas,” the newest booklet from Paws Corner!

Dryer Fires Tied to Lint Buildup

Q: My roommate says that we need to clean the lint filter on the dryer after every cycle, while I think it should be cleaned only when it’s full. Can you settle the argument? -- Flo in Harrisburg, Pa.

A: This one is pretty easy to settle. Clean the lint filter after every cycle. Why? Because a buildup of lint in the dryer -- even just in the lint filter -- can become a fire hazard. Dryer lint is alarmingly combustible and causes some 15,000 laundry-room fires each year.

Even though the lint filter screen traps a good deal of lint from clothing, some lint particles still pass through the screen and out of the dryer vent. Over time, these particles accumulate in corners and bends along the path that the dryer’s exhaust takes. So it’s not unusual to find lint buildup in places like the junction of the exhaust outlet and the hose attachment, or in the bends and folds of a longer piece of flexible vent hose.

So in addition to cleaning out the filter after every load, you should clean behind the dryer and clean the vent connections all the way out to the outside vent at least

twice a year.

To do this, unplug the dryer and, with a helper, carefully slide it out away from the wall, enough so that you can reach behind it. You may need to shift the washing machine as well, if the units are located in a tight space (and it seems like they always are).

Purchase a lint brush at your home-improvement store. This can be used to clear built-up lint from the area beneath the lint filter, something you can do more frequently if this seems to be a problem.

Clean the vents and hose by detaching the vent hose from the back of the dryer. Use the lint brush and if possible a shop vacuum to clear lint from the vent and the hose. Carefully brush or vacuum out the vent hose. Then, clean the exterior vent -- from the outside in, if need be. Make sure to reconnect the hose securely to the vents on either side.

A final tip: If the exhaust hose or pipe is made of white vinyl, replace this material as soon as possible with flexible metal pipe. Vinyl in particular is no longer permitted for dryer exhaust in building codes.

HOMe TIP: Wash your dryer’s lint filter in warm soapy water every few months to clear built-up fabric softener from the screen.

String Fall Leaves Into Colorful Crowns

It’s not uncommon to spot Lisa MacMartin strolling through her neighborhood at the crack of dawn collecting what she calls “urban bits of nature” for the day’s craft lesson

at her welcoming family shop, Heartfelt. “If I need fresh materials for fairy-house making, I’ll scamper around to find bark, pinecones and acorns on the ground. Using fresh materials is a way to celebrate the seasonality,” she adds.

Helping kids and their parents become more aware of the natural world in simple ways is her passion. On a recent Saturday, her quest was all about finding leaves for fashioning fall leaf crowns. Thanks to a windstorm the night before, Lisa’s finds included armloads of vibrant maple leaves still attached to fallen branches. Spread out on a large project table, the bounty was ready inspiration for all ages.

“Leaf crowns can be made anywhere leaves are falling,” she tells eager kids and their parents. “The simple, natural craft gives

everyone something to do when you take a break under a tree. And it’s fleeting,” she points out. “A cute leaf crown only lasts a day, reminding us to be present and appreciate the here and now.”

Here’s how you and your kids can make your own leaf crowns to be kings and queens of autumn:

1. Collect 15-20 freshly fallen pliable leaves with stems. (Maple leaves with their pointed ends are especially fun for crown-making.)

2. Cut off the stems at an angle with scissors where they meet the leaf. You will use them as pins to attach the leaves together.

3. Begin by overlapping the edges of two leaves. Gently insert the cut, angled end of a stem in and out of the two layers to hold the two leaves together. Repeat by adding another leaf to the right of the second leaf, “stem pinning” it in place. Continue creating the leaf chain until it fits your head. Attach the last leaves with another stem pin to finish the round crown.

4. Place it on your head and take a picture!Resource: www.heartfeltonline.com
