T he patte rn is not so shal low that it becomes clogged with fish blood and slippery, yet not so d eep it' ll send you limping fo r th e medici ne kit after a kneeling fish-figh t.

Th e 3700 h as most eve ry­thing you ' ll need to com­pe te with the d ed ica te d sportfishing boats. Seven­

ty-two square fee t of usable cockp it space with a sole that's reinforced fo r a fig h ting chair, full bolster paddi ng on th e inwales, and a se lf-drai ni ng cockpit with ove rsized scuppers and cove r ing fl aps are standard. T o tha t you can add lockable inwale rod stow­age racks, fresh- and raw-water wash­downs, four rod holders, an ove rsized fi shbox, an in-so le circula tin g li ve­well, a bait-prep station with sink, and even ou trigge rs. So equipped (as was our tes t boa t), you 're ready to h it the tournam ent trail.

vVhen we got into some dolphi n off Key Largo, Flo rida, I had a chance to sample several of these fishing features first-hand . All in-so le stowage boxes feature heavy-gauge stainless steel twist handles th at lay absolutely flush with the deck. Nothing to trip on he re, yet the boxes' semipermanent installation restricts access to posts, rams, linkages, and pumps below decks. The bait prep station is at the perfect working height, and while I would have apprecia ted a waist-high livewe ll along the transom, tha t wo u ld be crossing th e cru ise r/ sportfisherman line. Instead, the 3700 has an optional fl ip-down lounge seat along the transom as well as a two-per­son, aft~facing lounge seat fo rward and to port. Heavily padded , this aft-facing lounge is a great place to wa tch bai ts or eruoya snooze. And wi th twin 435-hp Caterp illar 3208DITAs purring along

THE SALOON'S AN INSTANT TRANSITION TO CIVILIZED LUXURY

bridge deck. vVhile there's no standing headroom there, the after end of the bridge deck comes up with the help of twin electIi c/ hydraulic ram s providing welcome ventilation and headroom, but not a convenient second enayway. There's good centerline room between the pm-verplants, and all fluid-level sticks are in board for easy access. There's good access outboard of the engines as well , but it required climb­ing around the exhaust system to get it.

Leaving the hooks, blood, and lube oil aste rn , you enter the main saloon via the centerline companionway. It's an instant u-ansition to civi lized luxury.

Saloon carpeting is standard on the 3700, but the op tional teak-and-holly sole is an upscale complement to the teak cabinetry and bulkheads through­out the boat. The saloon boasts a gen­erous 6'7" of headroo m and sleep s three to port: two in the U-shaped lea­ther lounge that converts to a double berth and one in the p ilot berth creat-

ed when you swing the lounge 's back­rest up and suspend it from the ceiling.

The open, L-shaped galley is along th e aft bulkhead , and I particularly liked the p lacement of the dual-volt­age, under-coun ter refrigerator / freez­er. It faces forward as all boat refrigera­tors should. vVhy? vVhen you' re under­way, items slide back into the 'fridge, not out onto the floor. Other standard equipment includes a microwave, built­in coffee maker , two-burner e lectric cooktop, and pull-out pantr)'.

Fully fonvard is the owner's state­room, with its 6'3/1 headroom, cente r­li ne double be rth , hullside shelving, dual cedar-li ned hanging lockers, and color 1V and YCR on a swivel stand. A full y equipped , dual-access head with Yacu-Flush toi let and separate shower with seat rounds out the inte rior.

As far as performance is concerned, the 3700 is noticeably- and surplising­ly-more responsive than her smal ler 3500 counterpart, cutting tighter ,

faster turns during my fu ll-speed, 360-degree turning test. There's no clunk from the transmissions when she's put into gear, and she's up and on plane in short order. As we cooked alo ng a t nearly fu ll speed from Key La rgo to Fort Lauderdale , 1 ke pt one hand on the wheel and one on the ,.viper switch while taking three-footers nearly head on. I never had to use that switch, and by now, having tested bo th th e 3500 and 4000, I' ve g rown accustomed to the wave-crushing ride and so li d fee l that is the hallmark of Tiara.

With her ex tensive optio ns list and good fl ex ibil ity, the new 3700 Open is a so lid boat that a ll ows you to tip th e usage scale toward cruising or fi shing or leave it right where it is. 0
