Design Example
HDTV and standard definition television (SDTV) are the two categoriesof display formats for digital television (DTV) transmissions, which arebecoming the standard. New television sets will be either HDTV-capable or SDTV-capable, with receivers that can convert the signal to their native display format. There has been a surge in momentum inthe DTV market as the world continues to accelerate the transitionfrom analog to digital TV transmission.

With the growth of broadband to the home, more media-rich content is beingmade available to the consumer. Additionally, the cost of home-networkingtechnologies has reached the consumer price point. Today there are millions ofcomputers being used to store music files and images from digital still cam-eras. There is also a growing market for personal video recorders (PVRs) andpersonal audio recorders (PARs) that are being used to store video, imagingand audio content for local playback.
Now, cost-effective home networking technologies can provide the transport tomake this content available to other areas in the home. TI’s Streaming Mediaefforts are focused on providing the technologies to enable low-cost, high-performance solutions for end point products used to pull content from a PC,PVR or PAR and render it in other parts of the home.

TSB82AA2—Industry’s first s800-capable 1394b OHCI device to accommodatehigh-bandwidth applications.
High-performance streaming media technologies cover a wide range ofdigital media and emerging media-based technologies that include inte-gration of video, voice and data content into many new and differentapplications, reshaping the way digital media content gets delivered.
Some of the challenges faced by streaming media include real-time performance, greater channel density and the software programming flexibility for simultaneous processing of video, voice and data streamsacross both wired and wireless networks. Typical digital media process-ing functions include encoding and decoding media streams, transcod-ing (converting from one format to another), and transrating streams(scaling from a higher to a lower bit rate) to accommodate various
system-level dependencies. Other processing functions include com-pression, decompression, encryption, packetization and transport ofmedia streams.
TI TMS320DM642 digital media processor and the TMS320C64x™ family of DSPs play a major role in enabling these technologies in videoand imaging solutions. As the cable television and satellite television industries enjoy anotheryear of sustained growth, many cable/satellite operators are continuingto invest in the “digitalization” of their systems. This is resulting in thetransition of the TV transmission infrastructure from an analog environ-ment to a digital one. Once a cable/satellite system has made thetransition, subscribers have access to an increased number of videochannels, high-speed Internet service, and even telephony voice service.The set-top box market, which is a key part of this digital upgrade, isbenefiting from this evolution.
When designing the next set-top box platform, there is no need toshop around for video components. TI offers a complete range of videosolutions to meet the specific needs of the new digital set-top box. The THS8200 is an “all-format” component video back end with colorspace conversion and automatic sync insertion. It can process all SDTVand HDTV formats.

High-performance digital media technologies cover a wide range ofstreaming media and emerging media-based technologies that includeintegration of video, voice and data content into many new and differentapplications, reshaping the way digital media content gets delivered.
Some of the challenges faced by digital media include real-time performance, greater channel density and the software programming flexibility for simultaneous processing of video, voice and data streamsacross both wired and wireless networks. Typical digital media process-ing functions include encoding and decoding media streams, transcod-ing (converting from one format to another), and transrating streams(scaling from a higher to a lower bit rate) to accommodate various

The TVP5150A digital video decoder (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) offers theindustry’s lowest power, smallest size and lowest cost. The device is a highly integrated video decoder with optimized architecture thatallows for very low power consumption. Its very low-power stand-byoperation of 100 µA further reduces power consumption, increasingbattery life in portable applications. The device outputs standard 8-bit ITU-R.BT601 or ITU-R.BT656 digital video data. Using a 14.31818-MHz clock, the device supports NTSC, PAL and SECAM ITU-R.BT601 sampling output data rates.

The video statistical multiplexer is cable head-end infrastructureequipment typically residing at the local cable service provider.Statistical multiplexers take in multiplexed digital channels as inputs,perform typical functions that include video content encoding, insertprogramming advertisements and content from local video servers,and provide as output a specific single subscriber’s cable package.

1394b is an extension of earlier 1394 technology that enables higherperformance (up to 3.2 Gbps), longer distance (up to 100 meters), anda variety of cable media to fit any A/V networking application (STP,UTP, POF, GOF). For home networking, 1394b is capable of 100 Mbpsover 100 meters of unshielded twisted pair Category 5 cable (called
Cat5 or UTP5). The improved performance, greater distance, and complete backward compatibility of TI 1394b technology makes it easyfor consumers to link their DTV, set-top box, DVD, VCR, and other1394-enabled equipment using the cables already found in mosthomes today.

The platform enables the design of cost-sensitive video applicationsthat are using high-performance devices that do not feature an on-chip ITU-R.BT656 peripheral.
For applications that require an on-chip ITU-R.BT656 peripheral, TIoffers the TMS320DM642 to minimize board space. This video plat-form offers an alternative, lower-cost FPGA-based approach. Output isin high-resolution RGB/component format, and can be viewed byeither projectors or by most computer monitors with VGA input.
Graphical User InterfaceSelect between TI’s single-channel TVP5150 and TI’s multi-channelTVP5145 video decoders, which support S-Video, YPbPr, as well asanalog composite formats.
AudioSimultaneously, audio signals are automatically delayed and adjustedfor the amount of time to process the corresponding video frames.
