14 NEWS MOSMANDAILY.COM.AU THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2016 14 MOSMAN DAILY, Thursday, October 6, 2016 MOSE01Z01MA - V1 A Vision for Life camera. Network to save children THE Royal North Shore Hospital has been gifted new cameras that it says will save the lives of children. The network of cameras will connect Royal North Shore Hospital staff with specialists at the Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service centre. NETS consultant and state director Dr Andrew Berry AM said the “Vision for Life” network would reduce mis- diagnosis and save lives. “Previously, every infant or child’s problem was de- scribed over the phone,” Dr Berry said. “NETS can see the patient and the care going on around them to give better, more timely advice.” MOSMAN Shark pups mini-mysteries A baby Port Jackson shark and (inset) scientist Catarina Vila Pouca. Picture: Virginia Young Scientist studies deep thinkers Andrea McCullagh THERE’S a nursery with a difference in Mosman. The tiny tots here are un- doubtedly cute but they have distinctive fins and love splashing about in the water. The Port Jackson shark pups are part of a research project at the Sydney Insti- tute of Marine Science. Scientist Catarina Vila Pouca is investigating their spatial and social cognition for her PhD studies. “It’s really hard to study cognition in non-human ani- mals in general,” she said. “We really need to think like a fish and try and think of different methods.” The pups excitedly rise to the surface of their tanks when Ms Vila Pouca arrives in the lab. She doesn’t know if they can tell it’s her or if they are just looking for snacks. “I’m not sure if they recog- nise me specifically or if they recognise someone is com- ing to feed them,” she said. “Our faces for animals are more like objects. Sharks are capable of object discrimina- tion and learn to associate food with a specific object.” Ms Vila Pouca, who is studying at Macquarie University, explained that sharks have long-term mem- ories. She loves working with the creatures and hopes that through her work she can change people’s minds about sharks. “Since I was a kid I wanted to work with sharks, I love them,” she said. “I wanted to show the world how smart they actu- ally are and change people’s ideas.” Melbourne Cup Hat Decorating Monday 10 and Thursday 13 October, 1–4pm Mosman Seniors Centre Enjoy a relaxed and fun afternoon of hat decorating, with the assistance of our creative team of volunteers.
