My husband and I are discussing re-financing our home. He wants to as it may save us $100 a month. I don’t think it’s worth all the trouble and expense for $100 a month. our interest rate isn’t that high and it is fixed.
If we’re going to get a new mortgage, we might as well start fresh with a new house, too. What do you think?
—Mixed Up in Mortgage
Dear Mixed Up, Wow! So many questions.First, let’s look at the cost of
refinancing. let’s assume it will cost about $3,000. at a $100-per-month savings, it will take 30 months just to break even.
Do you plan to stay in the house for another three years? That’s when your savings will begin. But if you are already considering another home, maybe the refi is not such a safe bet. Now let’s consider selling your home. How much do you owe? Do you have enough saved to qualify for another loan plus the down payment? The list of questions goes on but I’ve run out of space. Call me so we can think this through together. Happy to help.

Luxury Assisted Living… In Anthem! Keeping the Family TogetherUntil the opening of Anthem Senior Retreat, Cheryl Ables routinely helped families find other homes for their loved ones. “It’s always difficult to have to send families to homes that are far away,” said Ables. “Although they
are good homes,
the preference in this multi-generational community is to have mom or dad nearby.” she said. “This means minimal disruption to the family and better quality of life,” said co-owner Sam Ile.

It’s Going to be a Great Morning
For those who don’t play golf, Linda’s Wish is a rare chance
to walk/run through the beautiful Ironwood Golf Course. It’s also an opportunity to commune, exercise and enjoy the first of the cooler weather.
And, your $20-registration fee helps support breast cancer research, which might seem like an over-supported field of research. But everyone in our community, it seems, knows someone
touched by the disease. (We’re delighted to report Sarah has enjoyed a clean bill of health since her treatment.) There’s almost no reason not to participate. So show up Saturday with your running shoes and $20 and have a great morning.

Gavilan Peak school noticed some changes to the program soon after the school year began.
First, the name changed. Now called “blended-day kindergarten,” the tuition-based program touts the use of Common Core Standards adopted by a conglomerate of 45 states.
The standards are taught to all kindergarten students, with full-day kindergarten students getting an extra dose in the afternoon.
But parents also noticed “specials”—classes such as art, P.E., music and a special Mandarin class for students enrolled in the Mandarin program—had disappeared.
By the second week of school, Gavilan Peak parent Maureen Sollars asked why her kindergartner had not attended any of the
specials her older child enjoyed in the same program two years ago. Specials, Sollars was informed, were not on the kindergarten schedule this year.
“We’re paying for it,” Sollars said. “If anyone gets cut from specials, it shouldn’t be kindergarten. It’s fundamental and it’s an important part of education,” Sollars said.
According to DVUSD spokesperson Ashley Morris, the schedule for specials changes every year and depends on staffing and numbers.
“Offering specials is not a state mandate,” said Morris, “but we work hard to provide extraordinary learning opportunities, so we do offer them in Deer Valley’s program.”
But whether your child’s particular school offers them is hit or miss. And frequency varies, too. Canyon Springs, for example, offers art, music and P.E., while Anthem school offers only music and P.E. on a once-a-week, rotating basis.
After sounding the alarm, Sollars said she was told P.E. and art will be offered at Gavilan Peak on a once-a-week rotating basis for now. And, Mandarin has been added back to full-day kindergarten for up to 45 minutes of instruction per day.
“As a former kindergarten teacher myself, I understand the value of providing our younger learners with multiple opportunities to engage and experience learning in different ways,” said Gavilan Peak School Principal Chad Segersten. “We will always look for ways to improve our practices and we are committed to continuously improving as we move forward.” io
WHO GETS SPECIALS Program availability is based on “staffing and numbers,” according to DVUSD.

memory, homeowners will once again leave the comfort of their air conditioners and explore the great outdoors. Before you get too far from home, take five minutes and explore the outside of your own house. What you find might be a great adventure… or at least a honey-do list.
Check your exterior wood trim, including around your doors and roof eaves. The bottom of the trim on your garage door—and on the side door—are notorious for soaking up rain water. If not maintained, they will swell and separate, and the paint will blister. Break out that touch-up paint kit and hit any weathered areas; Paint acts as a protective layer. Look closely at your roof eaves for any water staining; This could be an early sign of a roof leak.
Once you’ve walked around your house
looking up at the eaves, turn around and go the other way, this time looking at the foundation stem wall for signs of termites. Anthem (and most of Arizona) is a haven for subterranean termites. These buggers can invade your home by building mud tubes up the stem walls to gain access to the munchy, crunchy framing and drywall. If you are lucky enough to have not seen one yet, the mud tubes resemble a dried vine about the width of a piece of yarn.
Lastly, get a pair of binoculars and check your roof. Do this in the day. You’ll be able to see better and it will reduce the chance of being shot by a neighbor. It is not uncommon for the high monsoon winds to lift your roof tiles.
If you follow this advice, you may have to reschedule your great adventure, but you just might catch a big problem while it’s still a cheap and easy fix. io
O V E R T H E P R I C K E F E N C E Classic Prickett
Look up. Look down. Termites, water damage and misplaced roof tiles can cause costly damage if overlooked.

KINDERGARTEN SPECIALS “School specials (art, music, P.E. and even Mandarin Chinese) in DVUSD’s tuition-based kindergarten program are not a guaranteed part of the curriculum; with offerings and frequency varying by school. How important are specials in the kindergarten curriculum and would it impact your school choice?”
Lyndsie KiblerAt-home Mom, New River“Specials are important to me especially at an older age. But if we could start them at a younger age—because it’s a head start—I would look for a school that does offer those things.”
Kelly CantelmeAt-home Mom/Teacher, Desert Hills“I think specials are important to develop a well-rounded child. I would not necessarily not attend a certain school based on a curriculum choice. I would make sure the teachers and the school would somehow incorporate some parts of specials into the classroom.”
Mindi TaylorAt-home Mom, Anthem“Specials are not a deciding priority for us. With our kindergartner, we felt that she excelled in the half-day program. In the end, it had no effect on our decision of schools.”
Genea KregerTrack Coach, Anthem“My son is going to kindergarten next year so I am faced with those decisions. If specials were offered for full- and half-day programs I would consider the schools that had those options versus the ones that didn’t. I’m open to the idea of a school with specials, but we will see next year.”
