LONDON (AFP) - The clergy-woman who was widely ex-pected to become the Churchof England's first femalebishop has blasted its voteagainst the move, saying onWednesday it had left thechurch's reputation "in tatters".

Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the Jamaican-bornchaplain to Queen Elizabeth IIand the British parliament, saidshe was deeply disappointedby Tuesday's narrow voteagainst women bishops by thestate church's governing Gen-eral Synod.

"We have deprived thechurch of all those gifts thatwomen could bring to its leader-ship," the 51-year-old told AFP.

"The church's reputation isin tatters. We cannot have havea society where women makeup more than 50 percent of thepopulation but cannot lead in

that."She added that if she was

one day asked to take on therole, "I would need to examinewhether that is what God re-quires of me."

Born in Montego Bay, Ja-maica, Hudson-Wilkin came toBritain in 1985. She had al-ways wanted to become apriest, but had to wait until1994 for the Church of Eng-land to allow it.

She believes that she andother Anglicans who arguepassionately for the introduc-tion of women bishops willnow have to wait at least fouryears before the issue can re-turn to the agenda.

"But I am positive thatGod's church will move on,"she added. "You know, I wentto Turkey recently and you cansee the ruins of Christendomthere. The church moves onand thrives elsewhere."

In any case, she said, the re-jected proposals were far fromperfect -- they would have al-lowed parishes to reject the au-thority of a woman bishop andforce the appointment of astand-in male.

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Relaxdoomsayers, the Maya peopledid not really mark their calen-dar for the end of the world onDecember 21, 2012.

As tourists book hotelsrooms in Mexico's Maya Riv-iera and Guatemalan resortsahead of next month's fatefuldate, experts are busy debunk-ing the doomsday myth.

The apocalyptic prophecythat has inspired authors andfilmmakers never appears inthe tall T-shaped stone calen-dar that was carved by theMaya around the year 669 insoutheastern Mexico.

In reality, the stone recountsthe life and battles of a rulerfrom that era, experts say. Plus, the last date on the calendar isactually December 23, 2012,

not the 21st, and it merelymarks the end of a cycle.

So no need to build giantarks, because the terriblefloods, earthquakes and vol-canic eruptions depicted in theHollywood blockbuster"2012" were not prophesied bythe Mayas.

The stone, known as Monu-ment 6, was located in El Tor-tuguero, an archeological sitethat was discovered in 1915.

Broken in six pieces, thedifferent fragments are exhib-ited in US and Mexican muse-ums, including Tabasco'sCarlos Pellicer Camara An-thropology Museum and NewYork's Metropolitan Museum.

The first study on the stonewas published by a German re-searcher in 1978. Since then, various archeologists have ex-amined its significance andagree that it refers to the De-cember 23 date.

The final date represents theend of a cycle in the Mayanlong count calendar that beganin the year 3114 before Christ. It is the completion of 13 baakt'uunes, a unit of time equiva-lent to 144,000 days.

The belief that the calendarforesees the end of the worldcomes from Judeo-Christianinterpretations, the expertssaid.
