Section 9-2
Vertical Parabolas
Pages 620-625
Objectives• You should be able to find graph vertical
parabolas including:a. Vertex Pointb. Axis of Symmetry (AOS)c. Focus Pointd. Directrix Linee. Length of Latus Rectum (LR)
• Complete the Square to obtain vertex Format
What is a conic section?
• A conic is simply the intersection of a plane and a double-cone.
• 4 common conics are the parabola, circle, ellipse, and hyperbola shown below:
Conical View
Parabola
• A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a given point called the focus and the same distance from a line called the directrix.
• A parabola is formed when we slice through one end of a double cone an an angle.
Parabola
• A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a fixed line called the directrix and a fixed point not on the line called the focus .
Key Concept
• The distance from Vertex Point to Focus Point is “p”
• This is also the same distance from Vertex Point to the Directrix Line

Vocabulary
• The perpendicular chord to the AOS is called the latus rectum(LR)
Latus rectum

a
When graphing you MUST label…
• vertex
• focus
• directrix
• axis of symmetry
• endpoints of the latus rectum
Where to find them…• FOCUS: inside the parabola
• DIRECTRIX: outside of the parabola
• AOS: through the vertex, perpendicular to the directrix
• FOCAL CHORD (latus rectum): inside of the parabola
Examples
• Graph and find equation examples done in packet of notes together in class.
Homework
• Finish examples in Packet of notes
• WS 8-3 Vertical Parabolas
