Chapter 1: Installation

Configuring the PS1000 for ThunderImportant: Before beginning this procedure, remove any Fibre Channel cables connected to the Palladium Store 1000 storage array.

Figure 1-1 shows the front panel of the Palladium Store 1000. When facing the front panel, the Control Panel is on your left.

Figure 1-2 shows a diagram of the rear panel of the Palladium Store 1000. Note the location of the Fibre Channel cable connection.

Follow these steps to configure the Palladium Store 1000:

1. With the Fibre Channel cable disconnected, power on the Palladium Store 1000.

2. Verify that all LEDs on the Control Panel are green. Be sure that the LED for the fan is green. Figure 1-3 shows a diagram of the Control Panel.

3. In the Control Panel, the Controller A LED should display a series of three-digit numbers, such as 002, 102. The third digit in each three-digit sequence indicates the address, which is 2. Verify that the address (ALPA value) is 2 on the display.

4. To change the ALPA number, use the navigation buttons (see Figure 1-3). Pressing the right arrow causes a cursor on the LED indicator to appear. Press the right arrow again to move the cursor to the third number, for example, 002. To increase the ALPA value, press the up arrow. To decrease the value, press the down arrow. Set the ALPA value to 2. Press and hold the center button (Alarm Silence/Enter button) for 15 seconds. The other values should change to this new ALPA.

Note: If the front panel beeps, press the Alarm Silence/Enter button to silence it.

5. Attach the fibre channel cable to the Fibre Channel connector on the Palladium Store 1000. See Figure 1-2.

6. Power on the Thunder computer.

Verify Firmware Version 128The firmware version for the PS1000 should be 128. To verify the firmware version:

1. Open a command-line window on the Thunder computer. (Go to Start > Run. Type cmd in the text box).

2. Change directories to the PS1000 directory by entering:

cd c:\ps1000

3. To display version information, enter:

scsi_set_mode –i

4. In the output, verify that Medea SR12 FC X128 is displayed for PhysicalDrive1.

128 is the firmware version.

5. If the firmware version is not 128, contact Pinnacle Technical Support for assistance.

6. Remove the CD, power cycle the array, and restart the Thunder computer.

Configuring the SR 12 Storage ArrayFollow these procedures to configure the SR 12 storage array:

1. Establish the connection to the array.

To establish a connection to the SR 12 array, you will need a serial cable (DB-9, female connectors) and a PC running HyperTerminal, or any other terminal program that can emulate VT100. (These instructions assume that you have HyperTerminal.) Connect the cable to the COM1 port of your PC and to the service port of the Controller to be configured.

Start HyperTerminal (go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications >HyperTerminal).

Choose a name for your connection and start it with the following settings:

• Connect using: COM 1

• Bits per second: 57600

• Data bits: 8

• Parity bits: none

• Stop bits: 1

• Flow control: none

From the File menu of the HyperTerminal window, select Properties. In the Properties dialog box, select the Settings tab. In this tab (see Figure 1-4), select Terminal keys and Ctrl-H. Select VT100 as the terminal emulator from Emulation menu). After making these selections, click OK.

You should now be connected to the array. If your connection is not established, check the physical link first, then the settings, and try again. If you still cannot connect, reboot your PC and power cycle the array. If this attempt is unsuccessful, try to establish the connection using another cable.



2. Perform the configuration process.

If the connection has been established, you should now see the start screen of the SR 12 command-line interface:

• Press any key to enter the main menu, which resembles the following:

• Press 1 to enter the configuration dialogue.



• Set is the host block size: Press 2 to set this parameter to 2048 Bytes.

• When prompted to choose the array’s stripe size, press 4 to select 2097152 (2 MB).

• Enter the Fibre Channel Loop ID. The value depends on the number of arrays already connected. Press 2.

The next option enabled or disables the Controller.

• Press 1 to enable the Controller.



The next option asks you to select single- or multi-Controller mode.

• Select 1 for single Controller.

You are now asked to enter a value for the array’s IDE read timeout.

• Type 400 and press Enter.

Do the same at the next prompt, which sets the IDE write timeout.

You are requested to set the gross timeout.

• Enter 1400 and press Enter.

• When asked to set the check condition, press 1 (first non-redundant state).

• Select 0 for AV mode ERP read Recovery.

• Select option 1 (Send Check Condition at First Persistent Non-redundant).



• A screen shows the configurations you have made. You are prompted whether or not to continue with the configuration. Press Y to proceed.

• At the main menu select option 3 (Reconstruct Menu).

• Select option 7 (Set Reconstruct DMA Timeout Values).

• Enter 550 as the timeout and press Enter.

• Press any key to continue, then close the HyperTerminal window.

• Reboot both the array and the Thunder computer.

Chapter 2: RAID Storage Array Administration

This chapter discusses how to administer the Palladium Store 1000 RAID storage arrays.

Each RAID consists a chassis with a RAID Bridge and 10 disks, which come in two disk sets. A disk set consists of five disks (four standards disks and one redundant disk). Figure 2-1 shows the Palladium Store 1000.

The RAID Controller hardware manages the disk controller functions, which include:

• Formatting the array

• Reading and writing data

• Checking data parity

• Rebuilding disks

Important: If two or more disks in a set fail (a set consists of 4 storage disks plus 1 parity disk), all of the data in the storage array will be lost.

Rebuilding Failed DisksAny time you replace a disk, you must rebuild the array. A rebuild calculates the lost data from the parity disk and remaining data disks and adds it to the new disk. For information on replacing drives see “Replacing a RAID Disk” on page 15.

If a disk has failed:

1. Remove the failed disk – You can determine the failed disk number by running the array_services array0<x> command. The disks are numbered 1-10, from left to right.

2. Replace with a new disk. The rebuild begins automatically when the new drive is inserted.

Warning: Do not attempt firmware updates on any system that has a failed drive in one or more RAID storage arrays. No software or firmware upgrades should be performed on any malfunctioning system.

Formatting an ArrayBecause the array is formatted at the factory, no reformatting is required. Should the disk ever need reformatting, contact Pinnacle Technical Support for assistance.

Creating a File SystemThe formatted array contains its own file system. Creating a new file system destroys all content. If you need to create a new file system, contact Pinnacle Technical Support for assistance.

Adding ArraysA Thunder can support more than one RAID chassis. RAID chassis can be added in volume sets. The initial disk set will determine how additional storage can be added to your system. For information about adding RAID storage array enclosures, consult Pinnacle Technical Support.

Chapter 3: RAID Hardware Removal and Replacement

The Palladium Store 1000 is housed in a RAID chassis. It consists of field-replaceable modules that can be hot swapped.

Control PanelThe Palladium Store 1000 Control Panel is attached to the RAID front cover (see Figure 3-1). You must remove the indicator panel to access the drives.

The indicator panel displays the following:

• Controller address display

• Temperature status - light turns red to indicate a cooling failure

• Drive status – indicates drive activity and drive failure

• Fan status – turns red in the event of a fan failure

• Controller status – turns red in the event of a Controller failure

Use the navigation buttons to set addresses for the Controller. Use the center button to enter values and to silence the alarm.

Hot Swappable ComponentsThe following components can be replaced while the unit is operational:

• Power supplies (dual redundant supplies)

• RAID drives

• Fans

Warning: There are two fans in a fan module. Failure of one of them will trigger an alarm and the Fan indicator light.The unit can run safely with one fan in operation. Do not remove the fan module on an operating unit without having a replacement fan ready for installation. Running the Palladium Store 1000 unit without a cooling module for more than a few minutes could result in damage to the unit, and will result in shutdown if temperature thresholds are exceeded.

You access the RAID disks and the Bridge from the front of the RAID unit. Remove the front panel to access the Bridge and drives. Figure 3-2 shows the location of the replaceable RAID

disks and the Bridge. The front of a RAID disk is labeled Drive number A 1-5 (bank A), or B 1-5 (bank B). The Bridge is labeled C.

Figure 3-3 shows the Palladium Store 1000’s rear panel, which provides access to the hot-swapped units: the dual redundant power supplies and a fan module that consists of two fans.

Replacing a RAID DiskA failed disk drive is indicated by a red LED on the drive in the unit. Replace failed drives as soon as possible to avoid loss of content.

As shown in Figure 3-2, drives are numbered A1 to A 5 in the left bank (bank A) and B6 to B10 in the right bank (bank B).

Warning: Make sure you remove the failed drive from the chassis. Removing the wrong drive results in loss of content.

To replace a RAID storage array disk:

1. Remove the front panel cover to access the disk drive bay (see Figure 3-2).

2. Press your forefinger into the indentation at the lower part of the disk (see Figure 3-4). The disk pops out slightly.

3. Gently grasp the cover flap and pull the disk out a few inches. Wait 30 seconds for the drive to spin down. Then completely remove the drive from the drive bay.

4. Affix the correct drive label on the replacement drive (labels are shipped with the unit).

5. Carefully slide the replacement drive into the drive bay. Open the front flap to guide the disk to the rear of the drive bay until it snaps into rear connection.

6. Press the cover flap down until it clicks in place, locking the drive.

7. Check the drive indicator to see if the new drive is in place. Drive reconstruction begins automatically (see “Rebuilding Failed Disks” on page 12).

Replacing the Power SupplyFigure 3-6 shows the Palladium Store 1000 power supply. A failed power supply triggers an audible alarm. The LED indicator on the failed unit turns red, which signifies a component failure.

To replace a power supply:

1. Note the failed power supply’s position and check the LED indicator to make sure you are removing the correct power supply. Remove the power connector from the failed unit.

2. Facing the rear of the unit, loosen the two retaining screws (see Figure 3-6).

3. Firmly pull on the retaining handle and carefully slide the unit out of the chassis, making sure to clear any cables in the way.

4. Reverse the process to insert the replacement unit.

Note: Pressing the center button on one of the RAID Controller panels turns off the alarm.

Replacing the Fan ModuleThe fan module is housed in the fan slot at the rear of the Palladium Store 1000. A failed fan triggers an audible alarm, indicating a component failure. The fan module consists of two fans, so air should be circulating unless both fans have failed.

Warning: If you do not have a replacement fan, do not remove the module. Operating the unit for more than a few minutes without a cooling unit could result in damage to the unit and cause the unit to shutdown if temperature thresholds are exceeded.

To replace the fan:

1. Grasp the side of the fan unit with your thumb on the top. See Step A in Figure 3-8.

2. Pull the fan unit slightly downward, and then pull it towards you to remove it (Step B in Figure 3-8).

3. Position the new fan as shown in Step B. Insert it into the slot (Step A) until the fan unit snaps into place.

Replacing the ControllerThe failure of the RAID Controller is indicated by LEDs on the front panel and the Bridge’s display indicator. The Controller is mounted with the drives in the front of the RAID chassis (left of center) and is labeled with a C on the latch handle.

Important: If a Controller fails, its associated Bridge (mounted in the back of the unit) must also be replaced.

To replace the Controller:

1. Remove the front panel cover to access the disk drive bay (see Figure 3-2).

2. Press your forefinger into the indentation at the lower part of the Bridge (see Figure 3-9). The disk pops out slightly.

3. Gently grasp the cover flap and pull the Bridge completely out of the drive bay.

4. Carefully slide the replacement Bridge into the drive bay. Open the front flap to guide the disk to the rear of the drive bay until it snaps into the rear connection.

5. Press the cover flap down until it clicks in place, locking the drive.

Replacing a BridgeTo remove the Bridge:

1. Loosen the two large retaining screws (on either side of the handle).

2. Remove the cables plugged into the board (note their location).

3. Carefully pull the handle out towards you, being careful to clear any cables.

4. Reverse this procedure when inserting a new Bridge.
