JANUARY 2016 FHS T IMES Fairview High School is a learning community that experiences success by challenging the potential of all who come through our doors. Principal Message Welcome to 2016!! A new year is always a prime opportunity to reflect on what was and to look ahead to the future with optimism. The great thing about the future is that we have the ability to both impact and shape it. For students, it is very much a time to make the next year one that is positive and leaves you in a better situation at the end of the year than you were at the beginning. That is why education is so important – we are all able to learn something new every day and if we do that, the learning process never stops! At FHS it is our goal to have all students experience success. With the first Semester ending in a few weeks and a new one beginning in the days after, it is very much an opportunity for students to take stock of where they are in their educational development. Parents and students should use the report cards they receive to provide feedback regarding students’ educational achievement and progress. For students in high school who will be completing final exams in the next few weeks there should be a period of responsible study to prepare for those examinations. If they prepare diligently for their examinations, I am certain they will experience appropriate success. Another item of importance to schools and parents is the Accountability Pillar Surveys that Alberta Education will be conducting from January to the end of February. As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student learning. In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. Students at FHS have already completed their survey online at the school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports. That’s it for me for this month. I encourage all parents/guardians to remain abreast of their son/daughter’s progress at school. Should there be any need for any further information or clarifications do not hesitate to call or email the school. Happy New Year and all the best for 2016. Principal Message
Welcome to 2016!! A new year is always a prime opportunity to reflect on what was and to look
ahead to the future with optimism. The great thing about the future is that we have the ability to
both impact and shape it. For students, it is very much a time to make the next year one that is
positive and leaves you in a better situation at the end of the year than you were at the beginning.
That is why education is so important – we are all able to learn something new every day and if
we do that, the learning process never stops!
At FHS it is our goal to have all students experience success. With the first Semester ending in a
few weeks and a new one beginning in the days after, it is very much an opportunity for students to take stock of where
they are in their educational development. Parents and students should use the report cards they receive to provide
feedback regarding students’ educational achievement and progress. For students in high school who will be completing
final exams in the next few weeks there should be a period of responsible study to prepare for those examinations. If
they prepare diligently for their examinations, I am certain they will experience appropriate success.

conducting from January to the end of February. As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability
Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for
success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various
aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of

Alberta Education. In February, all teachers will be completing their surveys
online at school.
Students at Fairview High School have already completed their surveys online at the
school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the
school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese,
Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the
quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your
survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016, and will be reported
publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
The Peer-to-Peer Project is starting up again at Fairview High School. The program engages students in creating a
welcoming, caring, respectful and safe school community through the development of positive mentoring relationships.
Senior students earn CTS credits by spending weekly time with another student at FHS being a friend, role model, and confidant. Students participate in games,
activities, crafts, conversation and goal-setting from February until the end of the school year. Peer mentors listen to their mentees, provide support and guidance,
help them to build communication and social skills, and develop a friendship based
on trust and respect.
Students who are interested in participating in the Peer-to-Peer Project can speak to Ms. Hobbs for
more information.
Grief and Loss Support
Spectrum is a small group program that guides youth through the grief and loss that comes with painful life transitions such as death and divorce. Students meet weekly for 12 weeks during PULSE block to participate in activities and discussions from February 9nd to April 26th.
To sign up for the free program, students and parents can contact Dayna Hobbs
