• ER – Followed the doctors around, accommodated the patients, showed the trainee how to strip, clean and make a bed. We had an infant come in who was having chest and breathing problems; several adults with minor problems, a gentlemen who was lucky to be alive as the back of his skull had been smashed into his brain, plus several old people who just fell down.

• Imaging- There have been a lot of infants that we have had to x-ray recently. We did a couple today of their chests. Today I also ran films for a lot of shoulders. Ken showed me a CT scan of a young adult who got in a quad accident and fractured his skull in numerous places.

• PACU- There weren’t as many morning surgeries for me to assist in preparing. This morning I only received five patients instead of the usual seven to eight. I was put on phone duty which was fun. When the phone rang I would say, “Recovery, this is Ashley.” I felt so important. While I waited for the last patient to arrive before I would have to leave for school I cleaned and set up the blood pressure cuffs that were used last night. Getting up a 3:30 am however, is not so much fun in order to volunteer at 6am, but I enjoy my department.

• Nursing- Today was a very interesting day to say the least. On our floor we had a middle aged Hispanic woman who got into a car accident and was drug on the ground about 50 feet. She came in with her right hand completely torn up and in shreds. The doctor ending up amputating ¾ of her hand. I got to see pictures of the hand before she had her surgery. It was crazy!
