Demonstrates opposing ideology. In the state government jobs too, instead ofgiving 27% like the center, 18% reservation has been given, then why not for MD andMS. It is a matter of shame that OBC, SC, ST students and ministers are participating inthis kind of exploitation of OBC class by closing their eyes, similarly PTA, PARA, PATteachers were given by back door entry. Even after recruitment was done, 82% of thevacancies were filled from general category without any reservation roster, whichcontinued to be regularized later. Therefore, the General Assembly demands from thegovernment that the OBC category should be given proper representation in MD, MS.

IF YOU ASKED ME FOR MY NEW YEAR RESOLU-TION, IT WOULD BE TO FIND OUT WHO I AM.

CYRIL CUSACK

Alittle over one hundred years ago, on December23, 1921, in the early hours of the morning, theVisva-Bharati Parishad Sabha was officially es-

tablished by Rabindranath Tagore in the vicinity of Am-rakunja. Although by some accounts, the work of Visva-Bharati’s foundation had begun three years earlier, it wasin December 1921 that Tagore formally announced, “To-day is the first session of the Visva-Bharati Parishad. Iformally hand over the University to all likeminded in-dividuals within and outside India who care for its wel-fare and nurture belief in its ideal, to them I submit thisinstitution.” (Author’s translation.)

With this larger aesthetic view, Tagore gave birth toVisva-Bharati, a Global India — uniting India and theworld — in an age when globalism was not yet a catch-word as it is the case today.

Tagore records the following on a journey while vis-iting Japan: “I looked at the land; it was so different tomy eyes, so picturesque. [A] Japanese passenger cameon the deck and stood by the railing. He did not see onlya picturesque land; he saw a land whose woods andrivers and hills had been given a new form by contactwith the minds of his countrymen, not a material but ahuman form... As a man’s native land is not only naturalbut human — that is why it is a source of such joy tohim...” (“The Aesthetic Philosophy of Tagore” by AbuSayeed Ayyub.)

The central doctrine of Tagore’s aesthetic philoso-phy — it informed the vision for Visva-Bharati — liesrooted in human emotions, which act as a bridge be-tween the individual and the world. Our emotions trans-mute the material world around us, thereby becoming asource of joy. For Tagore, art has no utilitarian signifi-cance. Art arises when the desire to express one’s emo-tions makes the artist want to forget the material world. Here, Tagore’s vision reflects the philosophy of JohnKeats’s “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.”

One may argue that emotions can also be negative.True, they may arouse horror and repulsion. Whilewatching Shakespeare’s play, King Lear, one experi-ences revulsion at the ingratitude of his two daughters(“How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have athankless child!”); there is pain, there is pathos, whenKing Lear roams in the sharp cold winds in the wild likea madman. But the play reveals a universal understand-ing of man’s place and, in this moment of oneness, of-fers the joy of comprehension. Contrary to popular per-ceptions, emotions in Tagore’s view are not subjective.Much like science, they retain a degree of objectivitythat cuts through materiality to reveal a subterranean, universal oneness.

Literature & HealthSwapping just one food item daily

makes diet planet-friendlyAs per a new Tulane University

study, Americans who eat beefcould slash their diet's carbon

footprint as much as 48 per cent byswapping just one serving per day for amore planet-friendly alternative.

The study has been published in 'TheAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutri-tion'.Using real-world data from a sur-vey of what more than 16,000 Ameri-cans eat in an average day, researchersfrom Tulane University School of PublicHealth and Tropical Medicine and theUniversity of Michigan calculated howmuch of a difference people could makeif they swapped one high-impact fooditem for similar, more sustainable op-tions.

They examined how the changewould impact two metrics -- their dailydiets' greenhouse gas emissions and wa-ter scarcity footprint, a measure of the ir-rigated water used to produce the foodsthey eat that takes into account regionalvariations in water scarcity. The highestimpact item in Americans' diet is beefand around 20 per cent of survey re-spondents ate at least one serving of it ina day. If they collectively swapped oneserving of beef -- for example, choosingground turkey instead of ground beef --their diets' greenhouse gas emissions fellby an average of 48 per cent and water-use impact declined by 30 per cent."

People can make a significant differ-ence in their carbon footprint with verysimple changes -- and the easiest onewould be to substitute poultry for beef,"said lead author Diego Rose, a professor

of nutrition and food security at TulaneUniversity's School of Public Health andTropical Medicine.

The study also examined how thechange would affect the overall environ-mental impact of all food consumptionin the U.S. in a day -- including the 80per cent of diets without any changes. Ifonly the 20 per cent of Americans whoate beef in a day switched to somethingelse for one meal, that would reduce theoverall carbon footprint of all U.S. dietsby 9.6 per cent and reduce water-use im-pacts by 5.9 per cent. Agricultural pro-duction accounts for about a quarter ofglobal greenhouse gas emissions andabout 70 per cent of global freshwaterwithdrawals.

For the study, researchers built anextensive database of the greenhouse gasemissions.

Colonial administratorRobert Clive oncecompared the an-

cient city Gomorrah, noto-rious for vice and depravi-ty, to Calcutta and dubbedthe then capital of BritishIndia as "one of the mostwicked places in the uni-verse".

Clive, who was the firstgovernor of Bengal Presi-dency under the East IndiaCompany in the 18th centu-ry, earned the title "Clive ofIndia" as he played a keyrole in establishingBritain's colonial domina-tion over India.

In July 1765, in a letterto East India Company of-ficial Sir Francis Sykes,Clive compared Gomorrahfavourably to Calcutta.

"I will pronounce Cal-cutta to be one of the mostwicked places in the Uni-verse. Corruption licen-tiousness and a want ofprinciple seem to have pos-sessed the minds of all thecivil servants, by frequentbad examples they aregrown callous, rapaciousand luxurious beyond con-ception "

This anecdote has beenshared by BJP MP M J Ak-bar in his new book"Doolally Sahib and theBlack Zamindar: Racismand Revenge in the British

Raj", a chronicle of racialrelations between Indiansand their last foreign in-vaders. The author says onhis return from England inMay 1765, the first deci-sion Clive made was tocurb 'gifts', a euphemismfor rampant corruption.

"All presents between1,000 and 4,000 now re-quired permission - any-thing above that went intoCompany coffers. This

shocked and infuriatedCompany officials, who be-lieved that they needed3,000 pounds a year tomaintain their lifestyle, andthrice that amount to takeback as retirement benefits,at a time when the salary ofa member of the governor'scouncil was 330 pounds.

"The historian PercivalSpear, using floridmetaphors appropriate tocolourful larceny, writes:

'The brotherhood of ex-ploitation, the freemasonryof graft, had been violated.Clive had put himself out-side the pale. They sharp-ened their mental knives ofrevenge on the grindstoneof hate while dipping theirquills of complaint in theink of defamation'," thebook says.

Published by Blooms-bury India, the book drawsupon the letters, memoirs

and journals of traders, travellers, bureaucrats, offi-cials, officers and the occa-sional bishop. A multitudeof vignettes, combinedwith insight and analysis, reveal the deeply ingrainedconviction of 'white superi-ority' that shaped this histo-ry.

So who is Doolally?According to the book,

'Doolally' derives from De-olali, a transit camp situat-

ed in Nashik about a 100miles from Bombay and re-ferred to the feverishDoolally Sahib and theBlack Zamindar eccentrici-ty of the English soldierwaiting to go home.

Among many other in-teresting bits of informa-tion, Akbar writes aboutone of Mahatma Gandhi'sless-known talents - hisability to use laughter as apiquant missile in the ar-moury of non-violence."During his visit to Eng-land in 1931 for the secondRound Table Conference,Gandhi was asked by jour-nalists what he thought ofWestern civilization. Itwould be a good idea, theMahatma replied," hewrites.

"The quip must havebeen especially pungent forWinston Churchill, still anintermittently successfulprovocateur rather than theicon he would become.Churchill, the eternal impe-rialist, had famously dis-missed Gandhi as a 'malig-nant subversive fanatic' andseditious lawyer 'now pos-ing as a fakir of a type well-known in the East, stridinghalf-naked up the steps ofthe Viceregal Palace', afterGandhi's pact with theViceroy Lord Irwin inMarch 1931," he says.

When Clive named Calcuttaone of 'most wicked places'!

Many are alarmed byChina's growing mil-itary ambitions, with

heated tensions in places likethe East China Sea, SouthChina Sea, near Taiwan andthe Indian border. The Peo-ple's Liberation Army (PLA)has benefitted greatly from adeluge of cash and copiousamounts of cutting-edgeequipment being added to itsinventory.

Last year was full of dis-concerting surprises, includ-ing the discovery of massivesilo fields for intercontinentalballistic missiles, and the test-ing of a fractional orbitalbombardment system. How-ever, more surprises await in2022.

Kurt Campbell, the USNational Security CouncilCoordinator for the Indo-Pa-cific, warned last week of a"strategic surprise" in the re-gion. He told the Center forStrategic and InternationalStudies in Washington DC:"If you look and if you askme, where are the placeswhere we are most likely tosee certain kinds of strategicsurprise - basing or certainkinds of agreements orarrangements - it may well bein the Pacific." The American

official said the issue was theone he was "most concernedabout over the next year ortwo". Expressing urgency,Campbell said, "And we havea very short amount of time, working with partners likeAustralia, like New Zealand, like Japan, like France, whohave an interest in the Pacific,to step up our game across theboard."

Campbell did not elabo-rate on what he meant by"strategic surprise", but incontext his comments hintthat China may be brewing upa significant basing agree-ment somewhere in the re-gion. It could be that he was

hinting at a specific develop-ment of which he is aware, orperhaps that he expects Bei-jing to throw its economicand military weight round ingenuinely unexpected ways.

However, such commentsdo not bode well. The USAshould have been preparingfor China's rise for the pastdecade or two. The Americanintelligence communityshould be on top of how Chi-na is muscling in on othercountries.

Unfortunately, the USAhas dropped the ball by ignor-ing friends and refusing op-portunities in the Asia-Pacificregion.

To gain a better understanding ofwhy the timing of exercise pro-duces different effects, an interna-

tional team of scientists carried out themost comprehensive study to date of ex-ercise performed at different times of theday.

The findings were recently pub-lished in the journal 'Cell Metabolism'.

Their research has shown how dif-ferent health-promoting signalling mol-ecules are produced by the body in an or-gan-specific manner following exercisedepending on the time of day. These sig-nals have a broad impact on health, in-fluencing sleep, memory, exercise per-formance and metabolic homeostasis."A better understanding of how exerciseaffects the body at different times of daymight help us to maximise the benefits ofexercise for people at risk of diseases,

such as obesity and type 2 diabetes," saidProfessor Juleen R. Zierath fromKarolinska Institutet and the NovoNordisk Foundation Center for BasicMetabolic Research (CBMR) at the Uni-versity of Copenhagen.

Almost all cells regulate their bio-logical processes over a 24-hour period, otherwise called a circadian rhythm. This means that the sensitivity of differ-ent tissues to the effects of exercisechanges depending on the time of day.

Earlier research has confirmed that exer-cise timing according to our circadianrhythm can optimize the health-promot-ing effects of exercise.

The team of international scientistswanted a more detailed understanding ofthis effect, so they carried out a range ofexperiments on mice that exercised ei-ther in the early morning or the lateevening. Blood samples and different tis-sues, including brain, heart, muscle, liv-er and fat were collected and analysed bymass spectrometry.

This allowed the scientists to detecthundreds of different metabolites andhormone signalling molecules in eachtissue, and to monitor how they werechanged by exercising at different timesof the day. The result is an 'Atlas of Ex-ercise Metabolism' - a comprehensivemap of exercise-induced signalling mol-

ecules present in different tissues fol-lowing exercise at different times of theday. "As this is the first comprehensivestudy that summarises time and exercis-es dependent metabolism over multipletissues, it is of great value to generateand refine systemic models for metabo-lism and organ crosstalk," added Do-minik Lutter, Head of ComputationalDiscovery Research at the HelmholtzDiabetes Center in Munich, Germany.

New insights include a deeper un-derstanding of how tissues communicatewith each other, and how exercise canhelp to 'realign' faulty circadian rhythmsin specific tissues - faulty circadianclocks have been linked to increasedrisks of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Fi-nally, the study identified new exercise-induced signalling molecules in multipletissues, which need further investigation

to understand how they can individuallyor collectively influence health."Notonly do we show how different tissuesrespond to exercise at different times ofthe day, we also propose how these re-sponses are connected to induce an or-chestrated adaptation that controls sys-temic energy homeostasis," said Associ-ate Professor Jonas Thue Treebak fromCBMR at the University of Copenhagen, and co-first author of the publication.Thestudy has several limitations. The exper-iments were carried out in mice. Whilemice share many common genetic, phys-iological and behavioural characteristicswith humans, they also have importantdifferences. For example, mice are noc-turnal, and the type of exercise was alsolimited to treadmill running, which canproduce different results compared tohigh-intensity exercise.

Exercise performed at different times of the day has different effects

MarianaA still small voice spake unto me,‘Thou art so full of misery,Were it not better not to be?’

Then to the still small voice I said;‘Let me not cast in endless shadeWhat is so wonderfully made.’

To which the voice did urge reply;‘To-day I saw the dragon-flyCome from the wells where hedid lie.

‘An inner impulse rent the veilOf his old husk: from head to tailCame out clear plates of sapphire mail.

‘He dried his wings: like gauze they grew;Thro’crofts and pastures wet with dewA living flash of light he flew.’

I said, ‘When first the world began,Young Nature thro’five cycles ran,And in the sixth she moulded man.

‘She gave him mind, the lordliestProportion, and, above the rest,Dominion in the head and breast.’

Thereto the silent voice replied;‘Self-blinded are you by your pride:Look up thro’night: the world is wide.

‘This truth within thy mind rehearse,That in a boundless universeIs boundless better, boundless worse.

OctaFX Copytrading redesigns its Copying Settingsew Delhi): OctaFX Copytrading is a popular service that allows its customers to profit by copying orders from professional traders, also known as Master Traders. The service recently introduced Nmajor changes to its copying settings - users can now copy the Master Traders' orders in equal,

double, triple, or any other desired volume. The new year means new beginnings. Global broker OctaFX decided to jumpstart 2022 by updating some crucial settings of its Copytrading service.OctaFX Copytrading is a top-rated service among the company's clients. There are two great reasons for its popularity. First, you can easily access the service through the OctaFX Copytrading App or desktop. Second, you need little Forex expertise to start making a profit.

Wondering how it works? The clients, known as copiers, choose professional traders to copy orders from them. Whenever a Master Trader opens an order, the same order opens in a copier's account automatically. This way, a copier can simply trust a Master Trader's expertise and profit with minimum effort. Recently OctaFX Copytrading has been working on making the subscription process to Master Traders more transparent for the copiers. They updated the parameters a copier can set when subscribing to a professional trader. Firstly, a copier can choose to copy a Master Trader's orders in equal (x1), double (x2), triple (x3), or

any other volume. Upon selecting a copying mode, a copier will see the investment required to start copying this Master Trader in this mode. Another new feature for the Copiers is the support funds. Copiers can choose to add support funds to protect their investments from unexpected market movements. This amount will only be used to support the trading strategy when the market fluctuates. The required investment for each Master Trader is calculated automatically. An algorithm calculates this optimal amount from a pro's trading history.

umbai: BankBazaar.com, India's largest fintech co-branded credit card issuer and online platform for free credit score posted 80% Myear-on-year growth in credit card issuances between December

2020 and December 2021.The growth was built on new credit card issuances via completely digital processes and a co-branded business model that currently accounts for 50% of the company's credit card issuances. This fits into the wider trend of rising credit card and digital payment adoption in India, fast-tracked by the pandemic. Parallelly, on the revenue front, BankBazaar tightly controlled EBITDA burn at 6% of revenue even as December 2021 revenue grew 68% over June 2021.This growth was supported by some crucial business changes. The company expanded its portfolio to include co-branded credit cards. The first of such partnerships is with YES Bank for the YES Bank-BankBazaar FinBooster co-branded credit card. The co-branded cards tackle the most important concern expressed by credit card customers in pandemic - managing credit prudently to keep credit score at its peak. They double-up as an advisor on credit health and management and provide accelerated reward points on digital spends. The company is looking to scale up to 1 million BankBazaar co-branded credit cards in force. Adhil Shetty, Co-founder and CEO, BankBazaar.com, said, "For many, credit cards are the first preference as they help users handle several aspects of their financial life, from payments to credit to incentives. Small wonder that the number of outstanding credit cards in India rose to 67.6 million. As the first movers in enabling contactless digital KYC solutions especially during the pandemic, BankBazaar has been indispensable to both its 50 million registered customers as well as its bank and NBFC partners.

BankBazaar caps the year of the credit card with 80 percent growth in issuancesew Delhi : In just a few months' time, the COVID crisis

has brought about years of change in the way companies Nin all sectors and regions do business. To stay competitive in this new business and economic environment requires new strategies and practices. During the pandemic, consumers have moved dramatically toward online channels, and companies and industries have responded in turn. One such industry which has had a major shift is the fire and security industry. Government regulations and mandates concerning workplace safety, increasing awareness of the benefits of installing fire safety & security equipment, and the demand for state-of-the-art protection equipment are the major factors fuelling the growth of this landscape.Keeping in mind that majority of our society is working from home, there has been a drastic increase in residential fires over the last couple of years which has prompted many to reinforce their structure with fire-resistant materials and take Fire Safety seriously. Great job! If you have done this.Let's face it, life is uncertain. Unexpected and dangerous events like a fire or natural disaster can occur without any warning. If you are prepared, there is a huge possibility that you will survive. If you are not, you may not make it. The global COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment where buildings are largely unoccupied, and employees are adjusting to hybrid working practices. This creates two significant considerations for our customers, the evolution of evacuation procedures and the need to connect fire systems to remotely reinforce building protection. In the "new normal" it is often uncertain how many people are in the office or another workplace.
