We had a really broad representation of postgraduate researchers, with entrants from all different subject areas and stages of their studies, including MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate candidates; students who had just started and those close to completion.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

On Friday 17 May we held the annual University of Plymouth Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

competition We had a really broad representation of postgraduate researchers with

entrants from all different subject areas and stages of their studies including MPhil PhD

and Professional Doctorate candidates students who had just started and those close to

completion

First prize (pound300 towards researchtraining related travel) was awarded to Paula

Boeira Peninsula Medical School

Second prize (pound200 towards researchtraining related travel) was awarded to Wycliff

Tupiti School of Geography Earth and Environmental Sciences

Third prize (pound150 towards researchtraining related travel) was awarded to Llucia

Mascorda Cabre School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Thank you to all our entrants and to also those of you who came to watch

July sees us saying goodbye to two members of the Doctoral College administration teamCarole Watson (6th from left) and Rebecca Rose (3rd from left) are leaving the universityand will be very much missed by staff and students

University Restructuring The University is undergoing a restructuring and consolidation process leading to thefollowing changes

1 The Faculties of Health and Human Sciences and of Medicine and Dentistry arecombining to form the Faculty of Health Medicine Dentistry and Human SciencesThe inaugural Executive Dean of the new Faculty is Professor Sube Banerjee MBE

2 The School of Engineering and the School of Computing Electronics andMathematics both in the Faculty of Science and Engineering are merging The newschool title will be School of Engineering Computing and Mathematics The Head ofSchool is Professor Deborah Greaves OBE

3 The Faculty of Arts and Humanities now includes the following five schools Schoolof Art Design and Architecture Plymouth Business School Plymouth Institute ofEducation School of Humanities and Performing Arts and the School of LawCriminology and Government The Deputy Director of the Doctoral College for thefaculty remains Professor Anthony Caleshu

The Doctoral College is working with the Universitys three faculties and the schools thatcomprise them to ensure that these changes disrupt your experiences as postgraduateand postdoctoral researchers as little as possible If you have any concerns do nothesitate to contact us

Changes to University Research Studentship (URS) GuidelinesMaternity Paternity and Adoption Leave and Periods of Illness

The University Research Studentship (URS) guidelines have been amended and have

incorporated changes to the payments of stipends duringmaternitypaternityadoption leave and periods of illness

Whilst most of the new policy will come into effect immediately the sections relating topayments of stipends during maternity leave and illness will come into effect on 1September 2019

This change in policy will be for all URS funded PGR students not just those who startafter the change in policy however these payments cannot be made retrospectively forperiods of interruption that begin before 1 September 2019

Paid BusinessIndustry Placements for PhD students in theSocial Sciences Announcing a fantastic opportunity for ANY University of Plymouth PhD candidate in theSocial Sciences to engage in a paid BusinessIndustry Placement of between three and sixmonths during the next academic year This placement will be funded by the ESRC(Economic and Social Research Council) South West Doctoral Training Partnership(SWDTP) - however you do NOT have to be funded by the SWDTP to take advantage ofit

To be eligible you must have successfully completed your Project Approval (RDC1) Youmust also complete your placement at least three months prior to entering into youroptional writing-up period

If accepted you will receive a Placement Grant at the same rate as the UKRI stipend forthat period of time (the current annual rate is pound14777) If you are already an ESRC-fundedstudent your stipend will cease while in receipt of a Placement Grant but will be extendedby the same amount of time as your placement Other students may interrupt their studiesfor the period of the placement and this time will be added to the end of their PhDregistration period

Unfortunately the Doctoral College is unable to organise a placement for you You areexpected to work with your supervisory team to identify and negotiate a placementopportunity

All placements must be completed by 31 March 2020 - therefore a six month placementwould need to start by 1 October 2019 and a three month placement by 1 January 2020

Voluntary Leaving (VL) Scheme for staff

We recently sent an email to all PGR students about the VL package that was offered toUniversity of Plymouth staff members The Doctoral College understands that some of thestaff who will be leaving the university as part of this initiative are supervisors of researchstudents You will be told as soon as possible if this affects you

We are working closely with Schools to ensure that new supervisors are being identified tojoin supervisory teams as quickly as possible

If you are a research degree student and your Director of Studies is leaving the universityas part of the VL scheme then you may apply for a two week interruption to acknowledgethe potential loss of momentum as your new DoS gets up to date with your work

If you have any questions about this please contact your School PGR Coordinator in thefirst instance or you can email the Doctoral College

Please remember to complete your Annual Candidate Monitoring form in GradBook beforethe 31 July deadline

At the end of each academic year all PGR students (including Professional Doctorate andResearch Masters students students who have submitted their thesis and also those whostarted in January or April 2019) are asked to participate in the Annual Monitoring processThe only students who will not need to complete Annual Monitoring are those who havebeen interrupted for more than 10 months during the 20182019 academic year

In addition to drawing attention to your achievements and progress Annual Monitoring isan opportunity for you to provide feedback on your experience as a postgraduate researchstudent with the University of Plymouth so that we can highlight good practice and alsomake improvements to our provision of research degrees

Voluntary Leaving (VL) Scheme for staff

We recently sent an email to all PGR students about the VL package that was offered toUniversity of Plymouth staff members The Doctoral College understands that some of thestaff who will be leaving the university as part of this initiative are supervisors of researchstudents You will be told as soon as possible if this affects you

We are working closely with Schools to ensure that new supervisors are being identified tojoin supervisory teams as quickly as possible

If you are a research degree student and your Director of Studies is leaving the universityas part of the VL scheme then you may apply for a two week interruption to acknowledgethe potential loss of momentum as your new DoS gets up to date with your work

Annual Monitoring Reminder

Please remember to complete your Annual Candidate Monitoring form in GradBook beforethe 31 July deadline

At the end of each academic year all PGR students (including Professional Doctorate andResearch Masters students students who have submitted their thesis and also those whostarted in January or April 2019) are asked to participate in the Annual Monitoring processThe only students who will not need to complete Annual Monitoring are those who havebeen interrupted for more than 10 months during the 20182019 academic year
