CHIMNEY DWELLING
Batley was once an industrial centre as a result of the invention of shoddy (recycled wool). Now many of the mills have been demolished or become decrepid.
CHIMNEY DWELLING
The Chimney Dwelling: A place for Batley Local History Group to meet and share stories, around a fire, about the town’s industrial past.
The Group is headed by my Grandmother’s “gentleman friend” and local historian Malcolm Haigh.
Local Historian: Malcolm Haigh
Historical Images: The Mills were cellebrated in illustrations and gave the Town a sense of identity.

Sketch Model: Chimney like structure which opens theatrically to become a space for conversation around a fire
Material and mechanical References
The Dwelling will act as a beacon, which when seen from the town, will evoke interest and conversation.

Flexible Facade; Allows for adjustment to controll airflow in varying wind conditions.
As the height decreases, diameter increases. Direct relationship between chimney height and diameter, maintains effective chimney effect.

“Earlier we used to take bath on both sides of the canal. Now tour-ists are taking photographs from the boat without our permission and
intrude our privacy. Now we are taking bath in the night...”
Kettuvallam Houseboat tours are Kerala’s main industry. Tourism provides jobs yet invades privacy and threatens traditional village life.
The Intimacy of daily life plays out by the river
Houseboat Tours: Kerala’s main Industry
boatbuilding
Oil powered motors and air conditioning systems from House-boat Tourism are causing catastophic pllution problems.
Wood chips can be used as a means of absorbing oil float-ing on water. The oil coated chips can then be dried out and burned as fuel
CHOCOLATE DWELLING
‘Wood chips dried to a moisture level of less than about 35% by weight will float and absorb oil at a ratio of about one part oil to 3 parts chips.
The absorption of oil is especially effective when the wood chips employed have been dried in a hot oil, hot wax or a combination thereof to a moisture content of less than about 20% by weight. The oil or wax in the dried chips prevents water from entering the wood chips and attracts the oil.
Wood Chips are a By-product of the Boat-building Industry
“People don’t want to drink the lake’s water anymore. It tastes of petrol and smells bad. There’s oil floating on the top, even
after it is boiled...”
