InthisstudyIaimtoexaminethethreatsandpossibilitiesofasmallislandsociety,IwilllayoutthefactsaboutVinönandthendescribesomethreats,thatIfeelVinönisfacing.ThenIwillpresentfromfourotherislanders.ThenIamgoingtopresentsomepossibilitiesthatIfeelVinönisreadyfor.ThenIwillpresentthepossibilitiesfromfourotherislanders.Theseislandershavedifferentbackgroundandperspective.Iamgoingtousethemethodofsixthinkinghats,amethodintroducedbyEdwarddeBono1thismethodwasintroducedtothestudentsin“Howtoreadanisland”.Thethinkinghatsareusedtodescribeaproblemorsomekindofdifficultythatyoumayhave.Inaverysimpleexplanationofthesixthinkinghatsare:

Vinöninfactsandfigures

TheislandofVinönisthelargestislandinHjälmaren.TheotherislandthatisinhabitedallyearroundiscalledValen.Vinönhaveanareaofapproximately4,5squarekilometres,thatisifyouasktheislandersthemselves.In“SverigesÖar”2Vinönis5,2km2.WikipediaalsotellsusthatVinönis4,5squarekilometres.InsearchofthetruthIcontactedafriendthathaveaccesstothemapsofSwedenandbyhismeasurementsVinönhasanareaof5,22squarekilometres.Vinönhaveanallyearroundpopulationof100inhabitants,Icountedallinhabitantinthefallof2015andfourpeoplehavemoved.Thereisapproximately50peoplethatliveonVinönhalfoftheyear,andalargenumberofsummerresidents.Accordingto“Sverigesöar”thepopulationwas102inhabitantsin2012,112inhabitantsin2005,119inhabitantsin2002,240inhabitantsin1944.

TheSwedishroadadministrationhaveaferrythatatnocosttakesyoufromthemainlandportofHampetorptoVinönin20-25minutes.Therideis5kmlong.Theferrygoesfor15ridesaday.Theferrytakes14normalsizedcars.Fortwomonthsinthesummertheferrydoubleitsrides,becauseoftourists.Theroadadministrationhavenolongeranaimtomakeaniceroadtothemainlandincoldwinters.Sotheferryrunsallyeararound,butnotduringthenight.

Thereisavoluntaryfirebrigadeontheisland.Itis10menwhopracticeonetimeamonthandcanbecalledoutwhenthereisafireontheisland.ThevoluntaryfirebrigadeonVinönisapartofthefiredepartmentofÖrebro.Therearetwodefibrillatorsontheisland.

ThenameofVinönisbelievedtocomefromtheoldwordforplaygroundforfishandbirds.Thisinformationcomesfrom“Riksantikvarieembetet”3

Hjälmarenhaveratheralotoffishermen,thereisabout24licencesforprofessionalfishermen.TenofthoselicensesareonVinönsofishingisanimportantpartoftheeconomy.AlmostallfishisboughtbyacompanythattakesthefishtoGöteborgwhereitissold.Pikeperchandcrayfishareeconomicallymostimportant.ThefishingofpikeperchiscertifiedbyMSCMarineStewardCouncilship,andhaveledtoastabileassetsofpikeperch.Theprofessionalfishinggave

202tonsofpikeperch,25tonsofpike,49tonsofperchinHjälmarenin20144.Householdfishingisalsopopular.Thelicencedfishermencanfishonwaterthatbelongtothestate.Allfarmsowntherightoffishingontheirownwater.

FarmingisalsoanimportantpartofthesocietyofVinön.Thereissevenfamilyfarms.Thereiscows,sheep,hensandpigsontheislandnowadays.Thesoilismostlysandandisgoodforgrowingpotatoandstrawberry.Inthesixtiesandseventiestherewerealotofsmallcucumbergrown.Thespringoftencomeslatercomparedtothemainland,buttheautumniswarmer,atypicalislandclimate.WeestimatethatVinönhavemorehoursofsumthanthemainland.

Vinönhastwohistoricalsight´sfrom1000-1500A.D.oneburialplaceandoneringofstones,accompaniedbyastoneship.Vinönwasownedbyaconvent,Julitainthemiddleages,thenalltheassetsoftheconventswenttothestate.LaterVinönwasgiventotheestateofSegersjöandin1792VinönwassoldtoOlofAnderssoninLjungåfor200“riksdaler”in1793thetwovillagecommunityboughtVinönfor400“riksdaler”.Mostoftheislandersownedthelandbutnottheprovisionfromit,butin1906alotoftheislandersbought

themselvesfreefromthis.5Hjälmarenwasreducedin1877-1888by1,8metersandafterthisthetwosettlementsonVinönwassplit,andthehouseswheremovedintonewlocationsontheisland.In1874thefirststorewasbulid.In1884theschoolhousewasready.In1908thetelephonecablecame.In1940theferrycame.In1952theelectricitycame.6

In2005Vinönwasconnectedwithfibretothetelephonestation.Vinönnolongerhavearegulargrocerystore.TheislandersareabletoorderfoodfromastoreinÖrebrothatalreadyhaveanorderingsystem.Thefood-truckcomesonetimeinaweek.Thepostcomesweekdays,andthenewspapercomesalldaysthatisn’tholydays.ThelibraryinÖrebrohaveabranchintheschoolthatisopenforonehouraweek.ThemissionaryhousenowownedbyVKHF7,isusedforworshiponeSundayeverymonth.Thesemeetingsendswithcoffeeandarevisitedbyapproximately10%oftheislanders.Itisthestatechurchthatadministratesthis.Theperishalsoarrangesasocialactivityeachmonthoftheyear.

AllhousesonVinönhaveprivatesolutionsfortheirseversystem.Alotofthesesystemsarenotapprovedbythemunicipality.Themunicipalityarelookingintodifferentquestions

aboutsewersystemstheselastyears.Themunicipalityhavedeniedpeoplewhowantedtobuildahouseontheislandpermissionforasewersystem,becauseofthethreatofwaterpollution.Allpropertieshavetheirownwell,somearenotthatdeepandothersaredrilled.TherehavebeenproblemsoffindinggoodwaterontheislandandthereisaconcernthatVinönwillbecomelikeaSwisscheeseandthewholegroundwatersystemwillcollapse.Themunicipalityhavesuggestedthatwaterfromthemainlandwouldbeasolution.Themunicipalityalsohavesuggestedthatacollectiveseversystemshouldtakethewastetothemainlandthrewapipeonthebottomofthelake.

In1991VinönsKulturochHembygdsförening(VKHF)wasfoundedasaresultoftheworriesforthestore,theschool,theferry.

TheAssociationhavestruggledwithalotofthequestionsofthedifferentservicesfortheislanders.IndoingsoithavefoundhelpandsupportinthenationalorganisationSkärgårdarnasriksförbund8andHelaSverigeskaleva9.

VKHFalsohavetheroletobringpeopletogether.Itpaysfortheprintingofthemonthlypaper“Ö-bladet”thatsomewomenmakeeachmonthandhavedonesoforfifteenyears.VKHFdealswithissuesconcerningthepracticallifeaswellasthesociallife.ThehousesthatVKHFownareusedforallkindsofthings.Theoldmissionaryhouseisusedforartandcraftsinthesummer,andusedasachurchinwinter.ItisalsousedforsimplerovernightaccommodationfortheOutdooreducation.Theoldschoolhouseisusedasmeetingplace,asummercafé,library,anofficewithinternet,copymachineandotherofficefacilities.Thereisaloominthebasement,alsoawashingmachineandashower.Oneoftheouthousesholdsasmallmuseum.MembersofVKHFalsogathersandcollecthistoryobjectsandrecollectionsofoldtimes.Theyhopetomakeabook,thatholdsthehistoryofeveryhouseonVinön.VKHFtakescareofalltheholydayactivities,suchasEasterparty,Valborgsmässoafton10,Midsummeractivities,dayofflea-market,melodycrossword,lightevening,winterdayontheice,autumnparty,alltypesofactivitiestobringpeopletogetherandpromotesociallife.ThemottoforVKHFis“alivingisland”.VKHFhavealsobeenthemotherofdifferentprojectstopromoteVinön.

Thetreatsofasmallislandsociety

ThethreatsthatIseeforVinönarebasedonmyexperiencesafterreadingtheliteraturein“Howtoreadanisland”andtheexperiencefromotherislandsocietiesIhavevisitedduringtheyearsbeingactiveinSkärgårdarnasriksförbund.Iam38yearsoldandanislanderfrombirthandheritage.IhavelivedalmostallmylifeonVinön,I´malsoaguidefortouristontheislandsoItrytokeepmyselfuptodateabouttheisland.

Anageingpopulationandthedecreasingofthepopulation

Bythenumbersfromthepopulationyoucaneasilyseethatthepopulationisdecreasing,butnotinanalarmingway.LikeSwedeningeneral,Vinönhasanageingpopulation.Itishardtofindworkontheisland,socommutingmaybeanoption.Thepeoplethatismovingtotheislandeitherhastheirrootshere,ortheyaremakingtheirsummerhouseintoanallyearroundresidence.Therearenotalotofhousesupforsale,andthismakesithardforyoungfamiliestobuyahousetolivein.Theferrydoesn´trideallhoursandthismakesithardtohaveashiftjob.Theelderlyoftenchosetostayintheirhousesaslongasitispossible,andthisholdbackthehousemarket.Withanagingpopulationcomestheissueofhomecare.OurlocalassociationVKHFhasbeentoldthattheoldpeoplethathavehomecarearethemostexpensiveinthemunicipality.Thereisalsonowaythattheoldpeoplecangethelpatnightbecausetheferrydoesn’tgoatnight.

Theissuesofarescuemission

Abigchangecamefortheislandersacoupleofyearsago,whentheroadadministrationdecidedthattheferryshouldbeplacedinHampetorpinsteadofonVinön.Thefirstrideofthedaywerenolongertoanyusefortheislandersandthelastrideforthenightbecameearlierintheevening.Beforethemove,theferrywascalledoutinemergencies,butnowtheroadadministrationdon´tseeitasacostthattheyshouldbare.TheislandersnowaredependentonSSRS“Svenskasjöräddningssällskapet”11thathasaonebigboat,asmallboat,andonehovercraftthatcarrypeopleinemergency.Thissystemisnotyetfullytrimmedin.ThereisnoproperpierinVinönorinHampetorp.Andthepeoplethatareoncallaretoofew.Thepeoplethatareoncallgainnothingforbeingoncall.Thechangeinsystemscreateanuncertaintyfortheislanders.Thefactthatthesystemnotisfullytrimmedinyetcontributestothefeelingofuncertainty.Thishaveinsomecasesmadeelderlyorislanderswithsomeconditiontomovetothemainland.

WhentheferrywasoncallallnightthevoluntaryfiredepartmentonVinönhaditsmissiontobethefirstpartofthefirefighting.Thenitwouldgetaidfromotherfiredepartments.TherehasneverbeenafireatnightonVinönsothefiredepartmentinÖrebrodoesn’tfeelthattheyneedaplantogettoVinönatnightwithafiretruckorextrafirefighters.Ifthereisafireatnight,Vinönareonitsowninfightingfire.In2015therewasadayofeducationinhazardsoffireanddefibrillators,whensocietyfailstogivefullservice,thepeoplethemselveshavetomakeprecautionstoavoiddanger.Thereisalsoaplantohaveonedayofeducationeveryyear.TheeducationisfreeandisadministratedbythefiredepartmentinÖrebro.

ThequalityofthewaterinHjälmaren

Asofthepresentthelakeisoverfed,itisnotinthedangerzoneofcollapsingecologicallybutthereisathreat.Alltheseversystemsaroundthelakeandinit,issupposedtobelookedintobythemunicipality.Theyaresupposedtobecheckedsothattheyareaccordingtotherelativelynewhigherstandardthatisdemandedtostopoverfeedingthelake.Itisuptotheownerofthesewagesystemtocontrolthatthesystemholdstherelativelynewhighstandarditissupposedtohold.Systemsthatareolderthen5yeardoesn´tstanduptothenewhigherstandard,soIestimatethat95%ofthesystemsonVinönisinneedoffixing.Somethingmustbedoneabouttheoldsystemsanditisuptothemunicipalitytostoptheoverfeedingofthelake.Themunicipalityislookingatasolutionthatwouldtransportwaterandsewageinpipesinthelaketothemainland.

Iftheislandersandpropertyownerscancometogetherandmakeagoodsuggestionforthesolutionofthewaterandsewersystem,andpresentittothemunicipality,themunicipalityisinterestedtohearwhatsolutionthecitizenswouldprefer.Theprocessontheislandproducingthissolutioncanstrengthenthecommunity.Anoverlookonthepossibilityforchairedsolutionscanmaketheislandersmoreawareofthequestionofasustainablelife.

Waterfromthemainlandwouldhelpthesummerbusinessliketherestaurantthatneedalotofwaterforshorterperiodslikeconcertnights.TherewillprobablybeoptionaltousethewaterfromÖrebrothousomepropertyownersmightbeforcedtoconnectthemselvesataratherhighfee.

Iftheislandersandpropertyownersfailtomakeagoodsuggestiontothemunicipalityalotofpropertyownerswillprobablyfacealargefeewhentheyareforcedtoconnectthemselvestothewaterandseversystemthatisbroughttotheislandbypipesfromthemainland.Thisfeemightbetoobigforsenorislandersandtheymighthavetoselltheirpropertyprobablytoasummerresident.Alotofislanderseethesolutionofapipetothemainlandasathreatforthelake,whatwillhappeniforwhenthepipebrakes?

Thereisagroupofislandersandpropertyownersworkingwiththesequestions,buttheyarecomplexandhavealotoftechnicalissuesthatdemandsalotofknowledge.

WaterfromthemainlandwillprobablybequitechlorinatedbecauseithavetravelledallthewayfromÖrebro,especiallyinthewarmsummers.

Itisofabsolutenecessitytosolvetheoverfeedingofthelakebuttheissueishowtodoit.

TherearenowandthenplanstodiginthecanalintoÖrebro,tocreatebetterpossibilitiesforboatstogettoHjälmaren.AdiggingwouldbeagreatriskforHjälmarenwhenalotoftheoldpollutionfromÖrebroprobablyliesinthesedimentofthecanal.Icanonlyhopethepeoplewhomakesthedecisiontodigornotinvestigateswhatisinthesediments.

IfHjälmarenisoverfedoralargepollutioncomesoutitmightbeathreatforthefish,seafoodandalsotheoccupationforthefishermen.

Alltheegginonebasket

Fishingisgoingverywellatthemomentandthereisahazardthattomucheffortandresourcesisgoingintothefishery.It’stheproblemofputtingallyouregginonebasket,isdangerousforallsocietybutespeciallyislands.12

HjälmarenoncewasthelargestproducerofcrayfishinnorthernEurope.Thisendedin1905whentheplaguecameandwhippedoutthewholepopulationofcrayfish.Thisbecameaneconomiclessonfortheislanders.Crayfishwaseatenbytherichpeopleandhadcreatedaratherlargeincomefortheislanders.Andwiththeplaguetheassetwascompletelywipedout.Afterthattheislanderswereforcedintodifferentwaystomakealivingontheislandandtheislandersarestillgoodatdiversifyingbutasubstantialpartoftheincomecomesfromthefishing.

Otherislandersviewofthethreatsofanislandsociety

RichardWidlund,34years,haslivedonVinönallhislifeexceptduringhisstudentyears.Question:WhatthreatsandproblemsdoyouseefacingVinön?Answer:securityaspects,wehavetofighttogetabettersystemofsecurityatnight.Thefrequencyoftheferryridesreduced.Theexpansionofshoreprotection.Drainageissues,theauthoritiescomingwithcompellingsolutions.Thattherewillbe"Stockholmprices"ofrealestate,thatwillbethreatforpermanentresidents.

PeterKumlin70yearchairmanofVKHFaformersummerresidentthatnowliveonVinönfulltime.Question:WhatthreatsandproblemsdoyouseefacingVinön?Answer:Thethreatisdesertificationandpoorcommunications.Changedauthorityexampleshorerightthatcanbe300meters,wouldbedevastatingforVinön.100metersisenough.

CatrineNeiler45yearsVinöbo,cafeowner,aformersummerresidentthathaveherancestorsonVinön,andhavemovedherewithherfamily.Question:WhatthreatsandproblemsdoyouseefacingVinön?Answer:AsyougetolderyoumayneedmorecareanditisquitefartothecareinVinön.IseenothreatforVinön,ifwarcomes,Vinönasafeplace,ifthereisamadmanwhoshootsaroundhimself,therearemenwithriflesonVinönwhocantakecareofit.

BirgittaAnderssonÅberg-Vinöbo50+,havemovedtoVinönwithnoformerexperienceandmarriedanislandentrepreneur.

Question:WhatthreatsandproblemsdoyouseefacingVinön?Answer:Hjalmarenisveryoverfedwhichmaymeaninthelongruntothelakearedyingduetolackofoxygenandallfishandshellfishdie.Thelowwaterlevelfavorsnorfish.Thiswouldthenmeanthatyoucan´tliveasfishermenhere,andthatnotouristswantcomehere.Wemustgetwaterandsewagearoundthelake.MoreandmoreyoungerfamilieschoosenottosettleonVinönbecauseoftheferry,ifyouhaveirregularworkinghoursitdoesnotworktosettlehere.Thismeansthatmanyhousesonlywillbetimeresidentsandtheislandwillgrowagain.Itcanfeelheavyandlonelyformanychildren/teenagers,whichdoesnotbenefittheirsocialdevelopmentandstressofbussingchildrentovariousactivitiesonthemainland.Wethenalsodon´thavepeoplewhocanengageinsearchandrescueandNerikefiredepartment/rescueservices,Thiscanthenalsomeanthattherearefewertripsontheferryifweevengettokeeptheferryservice.

Possibilitiesforasmallislandsociety

Goodconditionsforhorticulture

VKHFwasatsomepointworriedthatthefieldswerenolongerusedsotheystartedagroupforinterestedfarmers.Thishaveresultedinthatfieldsthatwereontheirwaytobecomefulloftreesnowisusedagain.Ayoungcouplethathaveinterestandknowledgeinfarmingnowhavehensandotheranimalsinseason.Anothercouplehaveinvestedinastorageforpotatoes.

Thereisapositiveattitudetowardssmall-scalefoodproductionatthemoment,andVinönhavegoodconditionsforthesmall-scalefoodproduction.Vinönhavemoresunandawarmerautumnthanthemainland.Thereisplentysweetwaterfromthelaketowaterthethingsthataregrowing,thisinatimewhenwatersuppliesarerunninglowinsomepartsofSweden.Thereissomeinfrastructuretotakethewaterfromthelakeuptothefields.Thereisalsobuyersoftheproductsintheformoftouriststhatvisittheislandandmightbeinterestedinalocallyproducedgenuineislandproduct.PeoplearealreadycomingtoVinöntobuylocalproductslikefishandcrayfishsowhynotbuyacanofsomethingelsethatislocallyproduced.Vinönhadmadeanameforitselfasaproducerofsmallcucumbersandstrawberriessothereisatraditiontoworkwithin.Theoldschoolbuildingholdsakitchenthathasthestandardforsmall-scalefoodproduction.Thereisacoupleoflady´sthatproducethesekindsofproductsbutastrategyandmoreenergycouldreallymakethisofproductiontotakeoff.Productsfromthelandaresomewhatamoresecureproductionthantheonefromthelake.Theweatherisimportantforbothofthembutwhenyougrowthingsyouoftenknowwhatyoucanexpecttoharvest.Whenyougofishingthereisnoinsurancethatyougetanything.

Goodconditionsforentrepreneurs

Ihaveatheorythatbecausetheislandershavebeenlandownersforalongtime,wehavelearnedtotaketheopportunitiesofsurvivingastheycome.Thishavemadeustotrueentrepreneurs,whencountinghowmanyislandersthathaveabusinesswefoundoutthatabout50%(wecountedtheentrepreneursin2007forSkärgårdarnasriksförbund)ofthepopulationwereentrepreneurs.Herearesomeexamplesofbusinesses:

Fishingandprocessingfishandcrayfish,smokingfish.

Farming:growingvegetables,processingfruitandberry,holdinganimalsfortheirmeatandeggs.

Allkindsofjobsforanexcavator.

Tourism:rentingcabins,café,restaurant,bikerental,icecreamkiosk,tourswithdifferentperspectives,drivingtourists,localfleamarkets.

Serviceslike;building,painting,electricity,heating.

Education:outdooreducation,thatseveralentrepreneursareengagedin.

Mailorderbusiness.

Producingcrafttothelocalartsandcraft.

Bakeryandbakingathome.

Theentrepreneursarealsousedtotakealivelihoodwhenitispresented,thisleadtobusinessthatengagesthemselvesinalotofthings.

VKHF–contributetothegoodsocietyandgoodcommunicationthatcreatesapositivespirit.
