Opportunity OverviewThe connected vehicle is here, and autonomous (driverless) ones are soon to follow. We will also see benefits of automated accident alerts and critical data services for emergency services vehicles. All of these will be enabled by satellite powered 5G, which can offer the persistent, global coverage to ensure vehicles are seldom out of touch.

The Satellite Applications Catapult has a wealth of expertise and experience in this field, which we are focussing on as one of our Threads. We aim to ensure that road transportation is safe and secure everywhere through the integration of satellite technology, whether as the primary technology or as part of hybrid solutions.

How Satellites Can HelpSatellites have several key attributes that make them ideal for safety and security applications within the transport sector. They can broadcast or multicast data. They can offer universal, reliable coverage, which is vital where terrestrial networks are poor or non-existent: using satellites as part of a hybrid system in 5G therefore enables seamless voice and data communications. Positioning and navigation satellites provide location information for vehicles on the move and help to pinpoint emergencies. Crucially, satellite infrastructure in Space is more challenging to compromise compared to their terrestrial counterpart.

Catapult RoleWe have been involved in a number of projects demonstrating the safety benefits of satellites as part of transport solutions. For example, through the I_HeERO project we have been promoting the benefits of including satellite communications within the next generation of eCall, the standard emergency call functionality which will be installed in all new car models in the EU and UK from 2018. We have also worked with industry and the Home Office to advocate the use of satellite communications within the planned Emergency Services Network (ESN) for emergency vehicles in the UK, a development that could then be exported to markets worldwide.

Next StepsIn addition to the emergency services related projects, we will work on solutions for tracking vehicles carrying hazardous or high value goods and immobilising them remotely; an application that could be extended to emergency vehicles. We will continue involvement in projects relating to connected vehicles on aspects such as minimising the threats of spoofing/jamming, promoting satellite communications for over the-air software updates. Across all of these areas we will, where appropriate, deliver working prototype solutions, testbeds and technology demonstrations to speed the adoption of satellite technologies within this sector.

About ThreadsThe Satellite Applications Catapult supports growth of new opportunities and developments for the satellite industry and user communities. We explore new areas of opportunity within our market Programmes. Developing from these Programmes are our Threads, which focus on clearly-defined topics where we can identify a positive impact on the community and the activities needed to achieve each outcome. Our Threads will evolve and may last different lengths of time, depending on what we are planning to achieve. In every case, our Threads have an agreed vision, roadmap and milestones so that we can monitor and measure our impact on the industry and hence our success. For information about our complete set of Threads, please see our website at sa.catapult.org.uk/threads
