With Memorial Gymnasium playing host to Basketball Day Indiana, the Kokomo boys
basketball team overcame an 18-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to cap the festivities off
with a 66-61win over Class 2A #9 Tipton on Saturday morning. The win moves the Wildkats
to 7-12 on the season.
Saturday’s game was a very strange one, with the Kats getting behind into big deficits, then
making huge runs in both halves. The Kats used a 12-0 run in the second quarter to finish off
the first half and close the gap to five, 30-25, at intermission.
Tipton’s 6’8” guard Ben Humrichous ended the third quarter with a buzzer beater three to put
the Kats down 56-41. The Blue Devils opened the fourth quarter with another three by Mylan
Swan to get the lead to a game high 18 points!
From that point on, it was all Kokomo. The Kats closed the game on a 25-2 run to win the
game 66-61 in front of a national stage on Fox Sports Midwest!
Leading the way for the Wildkats was sophomore Bobby Wonnell scoring 20 points, pulling
down five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Senior Savion Barrett scored a season high 16
points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior R.J. Oglesby added 10 points and snatched five
rebounds. Junior Jackson Richards, battling a lower back injury, battled through to hit two
huge three-pointers down the stretch and finished with eight points and a team high seven
assists. Freshman Shayne Spear scored eight points, including two timely three-pointers and
two critical free throws. All eight players that played did a great job and our bench was
fantastic, staying in the game and helping us galvanize enough effort and spirit for this type of
comeback. Our Wildkats showed grit, a stubborn refusal to quit, and rallied as a team to
continue fighting until the very end.
Wildkat Nation, as always, was on its A-GAME!! The crowd and atmosphere was electric in
Memorial, and Fox Sports, the IHSAA, and the Indiana Pacers could not have picked a better
host for such a first class event.
This week the Kats will take the long road trip to the Tiernan Center to battle the Richmond
Red Devils in a NCC showdown. We have to have a great week of practice and try and get a
hard fought conference road win! As always, we thank everyone for their continued support!
