Heavy Wall Heat ShrinkableInsulators
When it comes to moisture-proofingconnections and terminations, T&B’sheat shrinkable tubing, boots, and endcaps have proven themselves overyears of service to the industry. Madeof thermally stabilized cross-linkedpolyolefin, these heat-shrinkable insu-lators may be used over lead, steel, aluminum, copper, standard plasticand elastomeric insulating materials.
T&B heat shrinkable insulators aredesigned to be easy to use while assur-ing that the recovered wall thickness isgreater than that of the jacket it replaces.
Where applicable, T&B heat shrinkinsulators are U.L. and CSA listed. Also, all standard size insulators have an inter-nally applied adhesive sealant.
T&B Heat Shrink Insulators Offer:• Heavy duty protection• A full range of sizes from #16
to 1000MCM• Insulation for 3" and 4" bus bar• Field-proven reliability–rated 600V, 90°C• Improved protection against moisture
is provided by the internal sealant.
Products Include:• High Shrink Ratio HSHR series
with 6:1 shrink ratio designed forapplications with extreme differ-ences between cable, connectorand back shell sizes.
• Flame Retardant HSFR series pro-vides maximum flame retardancy. For special applications.
Heavy Wall Heat ShrinkableEnd Cap, Boots
Redesigned for superior durabilityand performance!Seals and insulates cable ends at a 600V rating. Installs fast, while providing insulation resistance tomoisture, corrosion and abrasion. Theextra thickness at the tip of the endcap prevents sharp ends of the cable from puncturing the seal.
Seals and insulates multiconductorcables and conduit with the same cost savings and superior properties ofT&B’s heat shrinkable tubing. Theseboots replace time consuming tapes, epoxies, encapsulations and dips. Theboots are internally coated with sealant.
Thin Wall Tubing
Manufactured from stabilized Polyolefin, these insulators are used to insulatebare Sta-Kon® splices and terminals. They additionally provide a degree ofstrain relief and may be used to harness wires. Available in cut piecesor reels. Colours also available.
series provides excellent flexibilitywith environmental sealing capability.
• 2:1 halogen free, low-smoke gener-ating thin wall, CPO-HF series. For use in contained areas includingunderground transportation, shipboard, offshore, military andaerospace applications.
Covers
These new insulating covers providehard shell insulated protection for “H”type compression taps and splices, and, because there is no tapingrequired, you get uniform quality andappearance each time. The exclusivelocking design provides the range takingcapability. Only five H-tap insulatingcatalogue numbers accommodate therange of 6 AWG—1000 MCM in themain, and 12 AWG—500 MCM in thebranch.• Hard shell outer covers guard
against impact… inner seal keepsout dust.
• Installs quickly and easily withoutspecial tools… simply snaps together
• Eliminates time consuming taping• Provides high quality, neat, uniform
installations• Range taking design reduces
inventory.

1. Select the proper size CRLS sleeve con-sidering the diameter and necessarylength of coverage. Allow a minimum of 3”length overlap on each end of the area tobe covered.
2. Remove the plastic release liner andpaper mask from the inside of the sleeveexposing the translucent adhesive andadhesive flap. Use caution, so as to onlyremove the liner and not the excess flap ofadhesive. This flap is approximately 2” inwidth, located at the end near the butylhold down strip (see Figure 1).
Figure 1
3. Wrap the CRLS sleeve ‘loosely’ around thecable, forming a tube, so that the adhesiveis on the inside. Tuck the end of the sleevein behind the excess flap of adhesive sothat the adhesive forms the tube aroundthe cable (see Figure 2).
Figure 2
4. Remove the paper protection covering thebutyl hold down strip (see Figure 3). Pressthe butyl hold down strip onto the sleeve inthe desired location and using the palm ofyour hand or a rubber roller, apply firmpressure to hold in place (see Figure 4).
Figure 3
Figure 4
5. Using a broad colorless or yellow flame(DO NOT USE A CONCENTRATED BLUEFLAME), begin heating below the areamarked “HEAT HERE FIRST” which runsalong the length of the sleeve (see Figure5). Heat the indicated area with a brushingmotion until a slight wrinkle occurs. Oncethe sleeve begins to recover, move theflame over the flap, along the entire lengthof the sleeve. Do this in the same manneras described earlier being careful not toapply too much heat between the factoryweld and the area above the butyl strip.
Figure 5
6. Continue shrinking the sleeve from thecenter towards one end, applying heatalong the flap area and in a circular motionaround the sleeve (see Figure 6). Whileshrinking, check the flap to ensure goodcontact. If the flap joint is not flush orbegins to curl during the shrinking process,re-apply pressure to the flap joint. Whenthe sleeve has adequately recovered, sealant will flow from the end and sealcircumferentially.
Figure 6
7. Repeat the same procedure, shrinkingfrom the center towards the other end untilthe sleeve has completely recovered.
8. Finally, apply the same additional heatover the flap closure area marked “HEATHERE FIRST” using end-to-end strokesand if required, possibly a small amount ofpressure to ensure a proper weld (seeFigure 7.)

Factory Applied Sealant
A standard sealant is coated on the entireinside surface of most precut sizes.Tubing is also available without sealant –consult factory. The sealant is rated forcontinuous 90°C operation on non-pres-surized cable systems and aids in seal-ing out moisture and corrosion.
Cost and Reliability of HeatShrinkable Tubing comparedto Tape
The cost differential in the installation ofT&B heat shrinkable tubing over tapingcan result in up to a 34% savings in laborand overhead. For example, on a 2/0 aluminum splice, heat shrinkable tubingcan be installed in 3 minutes versus 10 minutes of taping. In addition to thedirect cost reduction, there are theadvantages of assured uniformity of wallthickness and moisture sealing.
No Special Installation SkillsRequired1. Remove any oil, grease, water, dirt,
etc., by wiping the cable ends andconnector. Remove all sharp edgesand burrs from connector.
2. Center tubing over splice connector.3. Use the light blue outer portion of
the flame when using the SIT-1 torch.Do not hold the torch still in one posi-tion or concentrate the hot inner flameof the torch on the tubing; this may cause scorching.
4. Begin heating tubing in the center.Recover the central portion of the tubing first by heating around the cir-cumference of the splice. (Keep heatsource moving constantly around thecircumference of the insulator to en-sure uniform shrinkage of the insulator.)
5. Continue heating around the tubingand out toward one end. Move torcharound the tubing until one end is com-pletely recovered.
6. Repeat the above procedure on theopposite end of the splice, again work-ing from the center outward andaround the tubing.
7. Installation is complete when the tubing conforms to splice and sealantflow is apparent at both ends.
Typical SpecificationsInsulating and sealing of all 600 Volt, in-line cable splices from #16AWG through 1000MCM shall be done in accordance with theinstructions provided with the Shrink-Kon® heat shrinkable insulators, catalogue series HS.
The connector insulator must be made of thermally stabilized, homogeneous polyolefin having internally applied sealant. It musthave Underwriter’s Listing (UL486, 90°C, 600V) and be approved for the use. It must be usable without additional covering or adhe-sive, both indoors and outdoors, in overhead, direct burial, or submersed applications at rated voltage. It must not be adverselyaffected by moisture, ozone, oils, fuels, mild acids and alkalines, or ultraviolet light. It must be compatible with all commonly used cable jacket materials including rubber, plastic, lead, steel, aluminum, and copper.
