We make the kind of rods others would make in an ideal world.

We make timeless classics from bamboo and fi berglass and modern

masterpieces using the latest graphite and resins. Rods designed by

fanatics for uncompromising performance. Rods crafted with pride

by artisans for unparalleled quality. Rods built from scratch in New

England because we’re proud of America’s rich fl y fi shing heritage.

We strive to create the business you would build if you were in our shoes.

We care more about respect from our customers than maximizing

rod sales. We’re concerned less with what makes conglomerate

overlords or hotshot MBA’s happy (we don’t have either). We’re

focused upon fi nding what thrills you and us as anglers and

contributing daily to this sport we’re all obsessed with.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ON WWW.ITINERANTANGLER.COM

“Presidents have commissioned rods from T&T to

give to heads of state and royalty. There is a business

model for this type of manufacturer - think Bentley

automobiles or Perazzi shotguns. Thomas & Thomas

makes functional pieces of art.”

WE EXIST TO MAKE RODS FOR YOUWe exist to enrich your fly fishing experience.

Be you a travelling angler chasing silver across multiple continents or an equally committed fly fisher

that never ventures further than your local stream, Thomas & Thomas is with you all the way.

We make rods for enthusiasts because that’s what we are.

We just don’t have many customers who are occasional fl y fi shers.

This fact is supported by Field & Stream’s recent report that T&T

ranks number three in terms of the rods used to capture IGFA world

records. You may not fi nd this remarkable – we’ve been making the

world’s fi nest rods for well over forty years. But consider that we

have only ever sold a small number of rods per annum compared to

the brands that occupy the positions around us.

Serious anglers seek out serious equipment.

We are proud that, more often than not, their search leads them to

Thomas & Thomas. Prouder still that our warranty registration cards

tell us that once a customer chooses a T&T they go on to purchase

many more (we’re not going to tell you how many because you might

worry our rods are too addictive).

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ON WWW.FIELDANDSTREAM.COM

“Some companies, before the invasion of MBA’s, sought

quality over quantity. I have a T&T Paradigm, LPS and

Horizon. Unlikely I’ll ever get rid of any of them.”

We believe small streams and spring creeks represent the very essence of fly fishing. An up close

and personal experience with native trout evolved to the maximum with anti-predator awareness.

Thomas & Thomas builds small stream rods to deliver precise, delicate presentations at close range.

Rods that cast in a way that you will feel, but the trout won’t – at least until its too late.

ESP Extra sensory presentations for confi ned spaces.

When the conditions call for precision and fi nesse, add a sixth sense to your casting arsenal. This is a rod series for babbling brooks, rich chalk streams and technical spring creeks. The ESP feels light in the hand and fl exes with minimal haul for smooth, controlled casts at short and medium distances. In confi ned spaces, the rod’s action will enable anglers to get creative with roll casts and ‘bow and arrow’ target shooting. If longer presentations are required the ESP possesses plenty of reserve power—and backbone to handle bigger fi sh.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, western grip, milled aluminum, up-locking reel seat, tiger maple spacer, titanium stripping guides, Universal Snake Brand guides, chestnut wraps with black edging.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ON WWW.ULTRALIGHTFLYFISHING.COM

“You’ve heard things said about a rod ‘painting’ a fl y on

the water. It’s true . . . some rods (and casters) can do

it, and this one can. It was no surprise. The ESP is truly

a fi ne fl y rod.”

We know larger rivers present even larger challenges.

Longer casts, bulkier fl ies, stronger winds. The performance of you and your

rod will determine how well you overcome them. For rivers, Thomas & Thomas

builds crisper rods for lazer-like accuracy without ever sacrifi cing the ability to

cushion the connection between light tippets and large fi sh.

WE MAKE RODS FOR RIVERS

LPS II The medium action feel and accuracy of our legendary LPS – now in a four-piece rod.

Designed specifi cally for the stealth and delicacy that highly technical trout fi sheries demand. Wherever extremely wary fi sh are rising in smooth, glassy water, you will fi nd the conditions for this rod series to excel. LPS II rods handle long leaders and accurately deliver dry fl ies at all distances, providing the ultimate experience in feel and control. Sensitivity in the upper sections of the LPS II makes it a versatile tool, perfectly able to make the transition to small nymphs or streamers when conditions dictate.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, western grip, milled black aluminum, up-locking reel seat, tiger maple spacer, titanium stripping guides, Universal Snake Brand guides, black wraps with olive edging.

ATSMedium fast action rods for advanced trout situations requiring stealth, extra reach, line control and tip sensitivity.

The ATS is designed with a slightly softer tip, a smooth progressive action and brings benefi ts way beyond its excellent nymphing capabilities. A combination of high modulus graphite and a new, elongated grip design make these rods light in the hand. Controlled loops and precise presentations are no problem once a little more fl y line is out of the tip top. The extra length facilitates longer drag-free drifts making this rod series a great choice for any technical trout fi shery.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, elongated grip, black milled aluminum reel seat, burled walnut spacer, titanium stripping guides and single foot RECoil guides with black wraps.

NS IIFast action rods for big water, big winds and big fi sh. Now extended from a trout only series to incorporate salmon/steelhead/saltwater sizes.

Many fl y fi shermen lament the fact that fl y rods have gotten faster and stiff er over recent years. But fast does not have to come at the expense of feeling, which is why the NS series has been our best seller for the last few years. There are occasions in fl y fi shing where only a faster action rod can generate the line speed to get the fl y to where it needs to be.

The NS II series is enhanced and extended over its predecessor, the NS. We’ve reduced weight with the highest possible specifi cation titanium and Universal snake brand guides, tuned the high modulus blank and reduced the ferrule profi les to create a rod that will perform wherever you want to take it – big rivers, vast stillwaters or tropical fl ats. In new lengths and line weights this a fast action series that spans the spectrum of trout, salmon, steelhead, freshwater predators and saltwater power species. Discover why competition casters and hardcore anglers around the world are in awe of the capabilities of these rods.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, full wells grip, clear milled aluminum reel seat, burled walnut spacer on 905-4 and 906-4, titanium stripping guides, Universal snake brand guides with black wraps and silver edging. Fighting butt on #6 rods and above.

Nowhere are the demands on the angler and his

tackle more acute than in saltwater.

Delivering fast, accurate casts to moving targets in

howling winds is often the order of the day. It’s arguably

the most diffi cult challenge in fl y fi shing and one that is

dear to Thomas & Thomas’s heart. From our center of

excellence in Islamorada, Florida we develop rods that

edge the odds in favor of the angler. Rods with the power

to deliver the fl y, set the hook and fi ght the fi sh – ruthless,

uncompromising rods.

WHAT CAPT. JARED RASKOB IS SAYING.

SolarRefi ned power for the tropics. Ultra fast action, fl agship saltwater series.

The culmination of two years of R&D on the competitive saltwater fl y fi shing circuit, working with some of the best guides in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, the SOLAR series is our fl agship saltwater rod. Success in saltwater fl y fi shing is determined by an ability to see things clearly and focus upon the minute details, that together make the diff erence between a successful hook up or a missed shot. So it is with your choice of fl y rod.

With SOLAR we developed an immensely powerful rod and then reigned it back a little so that it is dialed for optimum performance at 45’ to 65’. All the top tournament guides agree that this is the ‘zone’. At these distances accuracy is enhanced and the reaction of the fi sh is visible. Sure the SOLAR can throw an entire fl y line for a ‘Hail Mary’. But it is dialed for the zone, strong enough in the tip to pick up and recast heavily weighted fl ies at these distances and possesses the butt power to fi ght the fi sh close to the strength limits of IGFA tippets. At Thomas & Thomas, we focus not just on creating ‘casting rods’, but on perfecting ‘catching’ rods. The SOLAR embodies this spirit and represents a new standard for fl y rods engineered specifi cally for the fl ats.

The detail: Clear graphite blank with topographical enhanced design to assist in shooting line, full wells grip, black milled aluminum reel seat, titanium stripping guides, smoked RECoil guides with black wraps and light blue edging.

DNA Switch Spey is in our DNA. And now Switch too. Medium fast action for effortless casting with one or two hands.

We’ve worked hard to develop rods that really do enable you to ‘Switch’ between any conceivable casting style with a single rod. The versatility of these rods cannot be overstated – every style of casting from single handed, single handed spey, two handed overhead, traditional spey and sustained anchor styles can be accommodated by the unique actions of the DNA Switch.

When Tom describes the development of our Switch rods as the biggest design challenge of his career you get a feel for the level of sophistication employed to create these actions. Now in 4 and 5 weights for trout and warmwater applications the DNA Switch is a new triumph in the evolution of fly rods and one we are very proud to offer.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, switch grip, black milled aluminum reel seat with spalted maple spacer, titanium stripping guides, smoked Universal snake brand guides with black wraps and pumpkin edging.

DNAClassic progressive action in a new generation of spey rod.

The DNA action is a classic, progressive design, inspired by T&T’s original DH series. The highly regarded DH1307-3 and DH1409-5 rods were used as the benchmark for the development of these new DNA blanks. By taking advantage of recent developments in materials, we’ve achieved the same smooth actions in a significantly lighter, slimmer bank and multi-piece configurations that perform like three-piece rods. We recommend the DNA action for anglers seeking two handed rods that will do it all – skagit, scandi, spey, and overhead - with ease. The DNA is the perfect ‘all rounder’ and the best choice for experienced casters fishing mid belly length lines and longer.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, spey grip, milled clear aluminum, up-locking reel seat, black spacer, titanium stripping guides, Universal Snake Brand guides, black wraps with deep red edging.

Overhead, Switch, Skagit, Scandi or Spey. Whatever your preferred flavor.

Are two hands really better than one? The answer is definitely – sometimes. Thomas & Thomas has

been at the forefront of North American development in this field since the introduction of our double

handed rods in the 1980’s. Many of the most advanced casters in the world have name-checked T&T as

the best two handed rods around. We design rods for energy efficiency enabling you to cover big water

in search of big fish – the fish of a thousand casts. Long heads or short heads, on top or down deep, we

design rods that allow you to paint the pool one smooth stroke at a time.

DNA-XFFaster tip action for eff ortless touch and go casting.

This ‘extra fast’ design fl exes more in the upper and less in to the butt sections. It produces a crisp, sharp feel that is perfect for throwing tight loops with a short casting stroke. We especially like this action for throwing fl oating and intermediate ‘scandi’ heads for salmon and steelhead and for overhead casting for stripers in the surf. As such we recommend the DNA-XF action for anglers who predominantly fi sh near the surface and enjoy Scandinavian underhand ‘touch and go’ styles of casting. It is also the recommended action for long distance overhead casting.

The detail: Clear graphite blank, spey grip, milled clear aluminum, up-locking reel seat, titanium stripping guides, Universal Snake Brand guides, black wraps with light blue edging.

DNA-XDLaunch skagit heads with authority with this new deep loading taper.

The ‘extra deep’ action is designed to be stiff er in the tip and fuller fl exing deep in to the handle of the rod. It’s optimized for sweeping heavy terminal tackle from the water and launching short heavy heads with authority. This rod has been thoroughly tested with the popular skagit lines of the moment and the results have been excellent. We recommend the DNA-XD action for anglers who predominantly fi sh deep and utilize ‘sustained anchor’ styles of casting with Skagit heads.

Thomas & Thomas was founded in 1969 by rod builders, Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell.

Their background in bamboo possessed the two Tom’s with a rare and

uncompromising obsession for detail. To their minds, the ‘labor of love’

involved in constructing collector-grade bamboo was too precious to

be tainted by anything but the finest cork, components and finishes to

complete the rod.

The genius of T&T was in upholding the same obsession for detail as they began experimenting with new graphite materials.

Dozens of blanks could be built in the time it took to build one from

bamboo. For many, this meant the ‘plastic’ rods were not worthy of the

same attention in terms of their handles, reel seats, ferrules,

guides and wraps. T&T took the opposite view and raised the bar for

graphite excellence.

Today, this ethos is imprinted upon our DNA.

Every T&T employee is empowered to inspect and reject rods at each stage

of the build process. A speck of dust in the paint and the rod gets rejected

when it arrives to be ferruled. An imperfect ferrule and the rod is rejected

when it arrives to be mounted. Nobody at Thomas & Thomas is paid based

on the quantity they produce, rather everyone is judged on the quality they

put out.

Annually, we make fewer than a hundred bamboo rods, a few hundred glass rods and a few thousand graphite rods.

Our attention to detail is consistent across our entire line. Aesthetically,

our rods are rated as ‘second to none’ by fly fishing enthusiasts around

the world. It’s the Thomas & Thomas ‘Look’ – the look of the rods you’ll

eventually own.

THIS IS OUR STORY

TRUE TO OUR ROOTS – THE T&T ‘LOOK’

Not many companies survive as long as we have by making fine fly rods

in the USA so our history is a special one.

Mixing a storied bamboo workshop with innovative graphite production fascinates

non-conformists. Yes its eccentric, but to the man on the street, so is fly fishing.

Fortunately, kindred spirits seek us out and the Thomas & Thomas legend lives on.

Page 17: Thomas and Thomas 2014 Catalog

We take great pride in building rods that are pleasing to the arm as well as the eye.

We build rods that communicate. Rods that prompt you to intuitively

adjust your stroke to produce the perfect cast. We believe it’s not always

about building rods that are faster or lighter or stronger. It’s about building

performance rods that get the job done, time after time.

When it comes to our design philosophy we tell it like it is and try to avoid blinding you with science.

That’s not to say there isn’t any – the quest for fl y rod perfection is a

never-ending journey. Tom Dorsey was among the fi rst rod builders to start

experimenting with graphite back in the 1970’s. Today, he remains obsessed

with pushing the boundaries to fi nd new materials and tapers that improve

performance. Dorsey calls it ‘tinkering’ but, in fairness, it takes a lot more

than that to produce rods that feel like the rods you’ll eventually own.

ALWAYS AN EYE TO THE FUTURE – THE T&T ‘FEEL’

“I had the chance of spending some time in the T&T factory in

Massachusetts. I was able to interview some of the craftsmen and

women who told my listeners about their jobs. I quickly realised how

dedicated the employees were in producing a fi ne product. They talked

about quality control with pride. Everyone from the offi ce junior to the

master craftsmen were proud of the label Made in the USA.”
