Rachel Julian (BCS – Fort Dauphin, a company assisting Kentz in Madagascar),was kind enough to arrange the meeting between Kentz and the school staffand students and to act as translator.

Kentz South Africa’s Broad Based Black Economic Empowermentpartner, Thebe Investment Corporation (TIC), recently celebrated its15th birthday in great style. The venue chosen was the Old Fort Prison, which, given the history of the country, seemed fitting for the occasion toreaffirm its values, traditions, history and culture as a company.

Kentz was represented by Francois van Zyl, Phidelia April and Pat Cassat the event which took the form of a cocktail and exhibition networkingfunction, followed by a gala dinner in the evening.

TIC invited Kentz to “fly our flag” on a small exhibition stand at the event, the majority of exhibitors were Thebe partners or belonged to the ThebeGroup of Companies stable.

Noel Kelly Gets 1st EverHole-in-OneDr. Noel Kelly, Kentz Director, is a seasoned golf player and has played on someof the most famous golf courses in the world. He always played his best, but hewas still searching for that 1st hole-in-one to seal the deal. It was at a recent visit to the Abu Dhabi Golf and Equestrian Club that he succeeded where so many have failed. It was Noel’s first time ever playing the course and it was on the seventh hole that he achieved the hole-in-one. The hole was a par-3, measuring 165 yards.

Noel was stunned and elated when he realised the ball had found the hole. Following this magnificent achievement Noel added, “The pin was cut on the back right portion of the green, meaning it was very close to the large pond on the righthand-side. I took a 5-iron and was actually aiming for the middle of the green, but the wind drifted to the right and into the hole. I couldn’t believe my eyes when it went in.”

Congratulations to Noel from everyone at Kentz! Noel with hole-in-one ball

Qatar Kentz “Chiefs”

3

Qatar Kentz’s the “Chiefs” orchestrated an amazing comeback against favourites Consulting EngineeringGroup (CEG) to win the Championship of the Qatar Kentz Inter-Company Basketball Tournament. Thetournament, which comprised of teams from CEG, KEO, Technip, JGC, Leighton, Halcrow, FEDCON, AEB,Dolphin/Oryx, Atkins and Kentz, was officially opened on 22nd November 2007 at the Al Ali Club, Doha.Following a welcome speech by Alan McFadden, Qatar Kentz Business Development (BD) Manager, DarylBreaux, Marketing Executive, Qatar Kentz, led all the teams through the Oath of Sportsmanship.

Two games were played nightly on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the duration of the tournament, culminating in the end-of-season play off which saw the top four teams, namely the Chiefs, CEG, KEO andJGC, fighting it out to become champions.

In the final the Chiefs were down 3 – 21 after five minutes of play. To combat this onslaught from CEG, theChief’s coach Daryl Breaux brought in Rigor Leano, who began to change the course of the game with thehelp of point guard Jindo Vega, Sammy Baguio and Reagan Leano. Francis Ylagan, Arnulfo Garcia andDominic How also contributed by controlling the boards and blocking the shots. However, CEG with theirsuperstar, Laureano Manabat Jr., and Jonel Bautista held on to their lead of 12 points at the end of the 1sthalf.

Early on in the 2nd half, CEG got caught in foul trouble, prompting their coach to call a time out. Takingadvantage of the situation, the Chiefs found their rhythm, went on a rampage and were able to tie the ballgame at 50 points each with 15 minutes left. Once in the lead though, the Chiefs never looked back and wonthe Championship with a final score of 83-67.

The MVP award went to Laureano Manabat of CEG. Richie Albano of Leighton grabbed the SportsmanshipAward. “Best Uniform” went to the CEG team and “Best Coach” went to Eric Lucas of Halcrow. All prizeswere awarded by none other than the Chief “Chief” himself, Dr Noel Kelly. Congratulations to the Chiefs whohave made Qatar Kentz very proud!

“CHIEFS” CROWNED AS CHAMPIONS

Inside Kentz Issue 4 – March 2008

Since his victory at the Avon Descent in August last year, Daryl Bartho has continued his fine form in other paddling races. He has competed in the Cape Point Challenge, where he came 1st, the Dubai World Cup, where he came 6th, and thePerth World Cup, where he came 2nd. In each race he has been a fine representative and role model for Thiess Kentz.

On 22nd of December 2007, Daryl combined the almost perfect weather conditions with careful strategy and embarkedon the Cape Point Challenge race off the coast of South Africa. Careful to conserve his energy early on in the event, hewas in a good position just five kilometres from the end to finally overtake the race leader and achieve victory in a timeof 4:28:37.

In Dubai, Bartho competed fiercely in the grueling World Cup event, which had a prize of $20,000. He finished in 6thposition "in a race that I just didn't fire in", he admitted. He believes that he took the race far too seriously and has sincelearned the importance of balancing his racing with "some fun".

It was with this balanced attitude that he entered the Perth World Cup, where conditions for the race between RottnestIsland and Sorrento Beach were perfect. In a field of top paddlers, and 4 kilometres into the race, Daryl found himself ina group of 4 paddlers who were to battle it out for 1st place and victory. The final kilometres of the race were really quickand he was narrowly pipped at the post by a fellow paddler – Daryl came in just 13 seconds behind the winner.

Currently Daryl Bartho is lying in 4th position in the Paddling World Series. The paddling season starts up again in Marchthis year and he has high hopes for his performances in the upcoming races. Thiess Kentz wishes Daryl and his brotherBrett every success in 2008 because, with their focus and dedication to this sport, we are sure to see the Thiess Kentzcolours proudly paddling the waves in many more races.

A number of years ago, Paulo dos Santos, Proposals Manager, Kentz Integrated Solutions, and Pat Cassattempted to launch an in-house “golf club” amongst the staff with little success, so the idea was aborted.

Enter Gary Staunton; we again tried and with much perseverance, seemed to be achieving our objective. Acommittee was formed, branded KAGS (Kentz Africa Golf Society), golf shirts were ordered and purchasedby the members, and now we have a membership of 30.

Paulo, assisted by Pat, is driving the initiative (excuse the pun) and, after a slow start at the beginning of theyear, seems to be succeeding; particularly given the fact that Paulo has purchased a very swish pair of golfshoes – the very same worn by Ireland’s Padraig Harrington. We think he is probably aspiring to the sameheights as Padraig and we are optimistic that one day we will watch him play in the Dunhill LinksChampionship!

The lads played their last round of KAGS golf of the year at the new Gardener Ross GolfEstate in Centurion, near Pretoria, on Sunday 9th November 2007, and resumed again inFebruary. The winner of the day was Braam Botes, Kentz Integrated Solutions IMSManager. On average approximately 10 games are played during the year, usually veryearly on a Sunday morning. Clearly enthusiasm is the key to rising at 5:00 am on aSunday morning.

Kentz South Africa would like to thank Paulo for arranging all the fixtures throughout theyear, for his commitment and all the hard work he puts in to make the club a success.

Kentz-OJ’s recently part-sponsored OJ’s Cricket Sports Club (comprising of both Kentz-OJ’s and OJ’semployees) to participate in the South West Zone Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board 20/20 Knock-out CricketCompetition. The event commenced on Saturday 19th January at the Rousillac Recreation Ground, locatedin South Trinidad. It was a brilliant atmosphere, filled with fun and entertainment. There were massivecrowd attendances to cheer on their respective teams.

The game commenced with a March Past Parade. OJ’s Sports Club won the parade out of the fifteen teamswho participated. They also won the preliminary game to get placed in the quarter finals, which took placeon 27th January 2008. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side this time as they were defeated by theiropponents.

Many thanks goes out to the hundreds of supporters who made this event possible. The management ofKentz-OJ’s will like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team and wish them continued success inthe future.

Pat and Hareesh also presented him witha framed Ryder Cup flag and framed signed gloves of the winning Qatar Mastersteam, on behalf of Qatar Kentz. A few speeches followed before a DJ got the musicstarted. Everyone hit the dance floor and the fun continued into the early hours, including traditional Kentz singsong.

On Wednesday 13th December 2007, the Qatar Kentz Christmas Party took placeat the beach of the Intercontinental Hotel, Doha. Over 250 of the Kentz familywere in attendance, ranging in age from 1 to 65, and there was something foreveryone to enjoy; a bouncing castle for the young (and not so young!), volleyballfor the energetic, cricket for the gentlemen and soap football for the daring.Luckily included in the invitation was instructions to bring a spare set of clothesas those coming off the soap football pitch were completely soaked, but at leastthey were clean! For those who weren’t feeling so energetic, 3 boats were onhand to provide the staff and kids with a different view of Doha, one from the sea– a great way also to enjoy a quiet sundowner.

Dinner was served in the early evening and with dinner came a great band, whichprovided fun and entertainment for all. Once everyone was well fed, it was timeto get down to business – the big prize draw. Cian Toomey and Alan Currie wereboth on hand to present the prizes to the lucky winners, and lucky winners theywere, with TVs, home entertainment systems, mobile phones and cameras beinggiven out.

A special thanks goes to Nigel Paul and Cian Toomey for all the hard work theyput in to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable day for everyone, and to Noel Kelly andEamonn O’Hanlon for joining Qatar Kentz at the celebration.

On 18th December 2007, 450 Qatar Kentz employees – from labourers tomanagers, working on various projects in Ras Laffan Industrial City – had a greatday out to celebrate the festive season.

After enjoying a good breakfast at 7:00 am, everyone was driven from Al Khor toUmsaid Beach where activities such as camel rides, horse rides, cricket matchesand 4-wheeler drives for the more daring had been arranged for the staff to enjoy.

Having built up quite a hunger, they headed on to Wakra Garden, where a mouth-watering buffet lunch was waiting for them. When lunch was finished, it was timeto head on to the next and final stop, the Doha Zoo, before heading home.

The employees would like to thank everyone who was involved in the organisationof this wonderful day: Alan Deighton, Steve Warlow, Bernard D’Souza, RodneyWilliams, Mr. Sivakumar G., Michael Regan, Steve Plummer, Alan Currie, AnthonyDempsey, Iqbal and James Moore, without whom this fantastic day would nothave been possible. A special “thank you” goes to Mr. Murali K. whose idea it wasto do this.

Kentz Russia celebrated the Christmas holiday season in true Russian style in thePacific Plaza Hotel in Sakhalin on 14th December last. Local traditions andculture were on display all night long, with many congratulatory toasts, muchdancing and party games entertaining the employees in attendance.

The Kentz Maintenance and Shutdowns Division’s year-end function was held onFriday 30th November 2007 at the Royal Hotel in Durban and was a great success. The theme was “Havana Nights” and most of the 120 employees from all sitesincluding Engen, Sasol, Secunda and Natref in Sasolburg who attended the partyreally got into the spirit of the theme! Guests from Kentz Corporate Officeattended and a great evening was had by all.

Terry Henebrey, General Manager of Maintenance and Shutdowns Division andDirector of Kentz (Pty) Ltd, and Carlo Marengo, Operations Manager, each madea short speech and thanked everyone for their contribution during 2007.

The Kentz team in Secunda decided to hold their annual year-end function forclients and staff at the Sasol Recreation Club. The turnout was great, with arecord 120 people attending the party, including representation from KentzMaintenance and Shutdowns Division, Kentz Corporate and of course the site-based staff from both projects and shutdowns divisions.

Kentz Integrated Solutions in Vanderbijlpark held their year-end function atGreensleeves Medieval Kingdom in Krugersdorp on 9th November 2007. Thisunbelievable experience started off with a glass of champagne on the bus to thevenue. After much persuasion to wear costumes, everybody eventually agreedand changed into people that could have been mistaken for anything other thanKentz employees!

A most unforgettable evening celebrated the end of a long and tiring 2007. HennieEngela, General Manager of the division, and Eoin Hurley, Managing Director,Kentz Southern Africa, each made a short speech and thanked all the staff fortheir dedication and hard work.

Paul dos Santos, Proposals Manager, and his wife Colleen were crowned “King”and “Queen” for the evening. Lots of laughs and enjoyment were shared andwhen the clock struck 12, the bus started the long journey back to Vanderbijlparkand it was filled with a lot of exhausted party animals.
