OKeh will release keyboardist-composer-arranger Bob James and alto saxophonist David Sanborns new album, Quartette Humaine, on May 21, 2013. The project is the first collaboration between the two musicians since their 1986 Platinum-selling, GRAMMY Award-winning album, Double Vision. An all-acoustic quartet offering, Quartette Humaine pays tribute to the late iconic pianist-composer Dave Brubeck, putting a prime spotlight on his work that featured alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.

David and I realized long ago that Double Vision had become more successful than we originally imagined it could be, James says. Ironically, although weve met in the studio, doing other peoples projects, weve never toured, or performed together live as a band. The exception was a midnight jam session at the Tokyo Jazz Festival a few years ago. We played just a couple of tunes, but it engendered the feeling that a reunion was way overdue. On their second go-round, the old masters eschew the pop and R&B production values that mark large chunks of their respective discographies, and offer instead an all-acoustic quartet recital consisting of four new compositions by James, three pieces by Sanborn, and two James-arranged covers (My Old Flame, Geste Humain). Propelled by legendary drummer Steve Gadd and 21st century bass giant James Genus, the proceedings are reflective, swinging, chock-a-block with unfailingly melodic improvising and beautiful tonalities. At this stage of my life, I wanted more than anything to play music thats challenging and fun, outside the style weve been associated with, Sanborn says. For various reasons, a lot of my records only reflected one side of the many kinds of music I was doing.

BOB JAMES & DAVID SANBORN to release TRIBUTE TO BRUBECK & DESMOND with NEW ALBUM QUARTETTE HUMAINE

  • Over the past decade, Sanborn adds, his records reflect a side of my sensibility that I hadnt been expressing as much, paying respects to guys like Hank Crawford and David Fathead Newman, who inspired me to start when I was a teenager in St. Louis. We felt its far more exciting and adventurous to move forward, James says. Times have changed. The music business has changed. We have changed. Its a poignant coincidence that the recording sessions occurred in December 2012, a week after the death of Dave Brubeck, who the protagonists were thinking of as they gestated Quartette Humaine. We talked about the interplay of Brubecks quartet with Paul Desmond, Sanborn says. Coming from that, I assumed wed make a quartet date. I like being able to really hear all the individual instruments. We had this beautiful 9-foot grand piano, and you can hear its sound ring out. You get more sonic purity without all those other elements. Indeed, both the tunes and treatments channel Brubecks gift for creating communicative music from highbrow raw materials. Dave has a similar capability to Paul Desmond-though in a different way-in that the lyric quality of the way they play takes it into an emotional-romantic concept rather than an intellectual one, James says of Sanborn. I felt-and I still do when I listen to the Brubeck quartet-that they were taking us on an adventure, and some of the adventure was challenging. Just when you thought you knew where you were going, theyd go somewhere different. Its this adventurous, in-the-moment spirit that fuels Sanborn and James on Quartette Humaine. Its so much fun to do it this way, Sanborn reflects. I used to separate live playing from being in the studio, and got into a mindset of having to labor over a record and make it right. I want the studio to reflect that live experience-the fun of discovery, not knowing whats going to happen until it happens.

  • Original Show on Dizzy Gillespie opens April 5 in PhillyLast Call at the Downbeat, an original show that details jazz icon Dizzy Gillespies famous stint at Philadelphias Downbeat nightclub in November of 1942, will open in the Red Room of the Society Hill Playhouse507 South 8th Street in Philadelphiaon April 5th.

Last Call at the Downbeat, written by Jazz Bridge co-founder Suzanne Cloud, is a fascinating look back at trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, one of the founders of modern jazz, and what history proved to be a ground-breaking engagement at a legendary Philadelphia nightspot, the Downbeat, long a landmark at 11th and Ludlow Street. Auditions are still ongoing to find the right Dizzy for Last Call, depicted in this show as a trumpeter ready to invent something called be-bop just after being fired from the big band of Lucky Millinder after a gig at the Earle Theatre, just a block away from the Downbeat.

Gillespie will have plenty of tales to tell about bop and Philadelphia jazz back in the day, and part of this eclectic presentation will be a filmed interview with the only surviving member of this club date, 100-year-old drummer Charlie Rice.

Last Call at the Downbeat is a trip back in time to one of the most important periods in the evolution of modern music. And it happened just around the corner!

Tickets for the show, which will also be performed April 6th, April 12th and April 13th, are $25, and show time is 8 p.m. For advance tickets, visit www.PIFA.org/Events/6

  • DENISE KING & OLIVIER HUTMANGIVE ME THE HIGH SIGN

    NEW RELEASE of the week

After a long tour and the release of their 2011 album No Tricks, both well acclaimed by the critics, Denise King and Olivier Hutman have naturally recorded this new album. They have performed over 70 gigs in the past two years, with Denise Kings warm voice echoed by the original tracks composed by Olivier Hutman. The concept of this new album was to go beyond jazz to create a popular music, modern and lively, but just as technical as the previous album. The voice of Denise King is beautifully accompanied by the piano and the keyboards of Olivier Hutman, with the double bass of Darryl Hall and Steve Williams on drums. On this opus, Stephane Belmondo excels on the trumpet and bugle with Olivier Temime on the saxophone. A genuine beat, full of emotion and swing.

    THE RHYTHM

Back in 1999, years before chill music was on its way to becoming a vast and influential subgenre of contemporary Jazz, saxophonist Andy Snitzer felt inspired one day and sat down at the piano at his parents house in his hometown of Philadelphia. That day produced the concept for Andys first release for Native Language Music, Some Quiet Place.

Some Quiet Place was an album that, it turns out, was way ahead of its time. Nobody labeled songs like the title track, A Few Wild Nights, Loving You, On Extended Wing, Losing Summer, For Joel or the edgy, fusion-trip hop flavored Testimony chill back then, but in 2006, they perfectly reflected the energy and vision of that side of contemporary Jazz. Previously, the popular saxophonist recorded two hit albums for Warner Bros., Ties That Bind (1994) and In The Eye Of The Storm (1996). Fast forwarding to 2013, Andy returns with his fourth album for the label entitled The Rhythm, a new groove-oriented instrumental release steeped in richly textured cinematic elements and dynamic urban grooves.

    SAXOPHONIST

    ANDYSNITZER

  • The album, Andys first all-new studio recording in two years, was produced in between Andys travels with the legendary Paul Simon.

Co-produced by saxophonist David Mann, the album includes performances by Mann, guitarist Chuck Loeb and trumpeter Till Bronner, backed by a rhythm section that includes keyboardist Alain Mallet, bassists James Genus and Tim Levebfre, and drummer Shawn Pelton. Featured cuts on the album include the first single Candy, Velvet, and No Exit.

Andy has performed and recorded with a veritable whos who of contemporary music artists. From Eric Clapton to Beck, Aretha Franklin to Naughty by Nature, Dr. John to Christina Aguilera, performances with these artists and many others have showcased Andys passionate sound and melodic style, and have earned him a place in the elite ranks of contemporary saxophonists. As a member of the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon world tours, Andy has performed worldwide before millions in over 40 countries. As a member of Paul Simons touring band (a position he currently holds), Andy joins a world-class assemblage of musicians from Africa, Europe and the United States in a band of widespread critical acclaim.

Andys last album from 2011, Traveler, featured 2 top 5 singles and peaked Top 10 on Billboards Contemporary Jazz chart. The Rhythm was produced by Andy and fellow saxophonist David Mann, and features performances by guitarist Chuck Loeb and German trumpet phenom Till Bronner.

    Jazz Jam Sessions

ChicagoA jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public.

Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

    2013

  • We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

  • Celebration Kicks off 25th Annual Capital City Jazz Fest Set for April 26-28

    A LOOK ATchicagoland jazz festivals

More than 500 jazz fans are expected to converge in Wisconsins capital for the festivals 25th year of presenting world class jazz over three days Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 at the Madison Quality Inn & Suites, 2969 Cahill Main, Fitchbur, Wisconsin. The 25th Anniversary celebration will kick off on Thursday April 25 at the Candlewood Suites in Fitchberg.

This years event will feature jazz artists from all over the country performing a broad range of jazz styles and features Jazz vocalist Banu Gibson, who appeared at the Societys first fest in 1989. A superior and swinging jazz singer, Gibson is one of the few vocalists to maintain loyalty to songs of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. She mixes fresh renditions of Tin Pan Alley standards and jazz classics. With an extensive repertoire of songs, Gibsons performances cover many high points of Americas golden age of popular music.

Also on the bill is The Titan Hot Seven, one of the hottest jazz bands on land and sea! A most versatile ensemble, the band features traditional jazz, swing, ballads, ragtime, novelty tunes and spontaneous, outrageous humor. Tailoring their music and mirth to each audience, they guarantee that each show is full of surprises for everyone. Hailed by fans, musicians and critics alike, the Titan Hot Seven is a powerhouse ensemble capable of going from a whisper to a roar in the space of one tune.

Relying on instincts, inspirations of the moment, perfect pitch, humor and camaraderie, the St. Louis Rivermen create joyous jazz and heart-breaking blues. A thorough knowledge of traditional jazz, the example of unarranged jazz bands like Louis Armstrongs All Stars and Eddie Condons small groups, plus years of experience in numerous trad bands, form the foundation of their music.

Based in Iowa, Jimmy Valentines Quintet plays in the style of Pete Fountain, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, specializing in the classic jazz of the 1930s and 40s. Joining them will be the amazing young phenom Dave Bennett, an authentic musical prodigy who brings to life Goodmans classic sound with incredible technique, style, beauty of tone and naturalness.

Two jazz worship celebrations will be take place on Sunday morning, April 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Madison and at the fest venue. The St. Louis Rivermen will perform at the church with noted Madison jazz musicians and Jimmy Valentines Quintet with Dave Bennett will perform at the fest venue. The Rev Allan Townsend, who performed with his Wonderful World Jazz Band, at the fest, will lead this celebration.

In addition to the music, the fests Jazz Mall will have books, records, CDs, videos, jazz clothing and souvenirs for sale throughout the event.

When you think of hard-driving swing, daring expression, sophistication and elegance in artistry, formidable technique and a thunderous sound, there are only a small handful of pianists you think of and one of them is most assuredly Eric Reed.

Beyond playing the piano, Reed has expanded his scope to Hollywood, composing and arranging music for the Eddie Murphy comedy, Life, various other independent projects for Fantastic Four director and high-school chum Tim Story, plus commercials and TV spots. Annually, he serves as musical conductor for choreographer Alvin Aileys classic Revelations with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, under the direction of Judith Jamison. An ardent educator, Eric served on the faculty of the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Erics latest recording, THE BADDEST MONK on Savant Records is available everywhere.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

John Scofields guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R&B.

Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. Hes played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino among many jazz legends. Throughout his career Scofield has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind.

    Hw C M FLINDY ENDRES

For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.
