A: The Gemara Taanit lists five tragic events that occurred on the 17 th of Tammuz (Taanit pages 26a and 28b): 1) Moshe descended from Har Sinai and broke the first set of Luchot after seeing the Jewish people worshipping the Golden Calf. 2) Starting on this day the Kohanim were prevented from bringing the Korban Tamid during the period of the first Beit Hamikdash. 3) The walls of Yerushalayim were breached on this day, which is three weeks before the second Beit Hamikdash was destroyed. 4) A Greek general by the name of Apostumos burned a Sefer Torah. 5) An idol was placed in the Beit Hamikdash (The Yerushalmi notes that this was either done by Apostumos after he burned the Sefer Torah, or by the wicked king Menashe during the period of the first Beit Hamikdash).
