CHRIST, KING OF ALLOn this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ's work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ's saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls "the least ones" (Matthew 25:45).

the streNgth of our Parish CommuNity

Many people tell me that St. Mary’s is a great parish and I’m quite inclined to believe them. Our parish site is located in one of the best towns in Santa Clara County. We have an excellent school with dedicated teachers along with an experienced and professional pastoral staff. Lay leadership is the cornerstone of the conciliar groups of the parish, and the many that serve in this capacity recruit, train, and support the parishioners to answer the call of service in the local community. Anyone with analytical eye is capable of recognizing all of the advantages of belonging to a parish like ours.

The life of our parish community is centered in Jesus Christ. This centeredness is the one strength we could not afford to lose because

it is the identity to which each of us accepts by virtue of our sacramental life in the Church. The fulfillment of the sacramental life compels us to live what we believe in service to God and one another. While it may be easier for some to remain inactive, the call to active engagement with fellow parishioners and staff members remains the hallmark of lay involvement in the mission of the Church.

Even while we have many strengths to consider there is still much that we lack, and we do well to consider how we can build on what we have in order to make our parish community the best it can be. As we conclude the month of November and make preparations for Advent and Christmas, let us keep focus on how we can give confidence to each other to pursue the efforts that we endeavor as a Christian Community.

The time we have is indeed a valuable commodity. As Catholics, we are meant to spend time first and foremost with God in prayer. This time allows you to

discern how best to use the talents God has created in you, making it possible to see how your talent can bear fruit in service to God and our neighbor. Once you know what it is you can offer to God, it’s far easier to identify your role for service. When others see what you offer, they will be encouraged to consider similarly ways they might be of service at St. Mary.

Generosity is a natural outcome of this kind of discernment. Financial contributions correspond to your willingness to support the mission of the Church. Consider carefully what you can give to the life of this parish community. Pray about it and decide on the part you will play in support of our parish life that lends to strengthen our identity as disciples of Jesus Christ.

#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. This year, #GivingTuesday falls on November 28. #GivingTuesday harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. It inspires people to take collective action to improve their communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in, and help create a better world. #GivingTuesday demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together.
