traffic fatalities and serious injuries Data driven strategic approach Lump sum total vs. individual authorizations Road user defined Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSP) 5% reports no longer required

Lessons Learned
Requests must be accurate, detailed, data drivenand complete.
Better identification of issues related to roadwaysafety concerns.
All projects need to be constructible, feasible andcost effective.
Coordination with the Local Agency Safety Team(LAST) is needed for each application.

Maintains focus on safety
Data-driven
Continues the HSIP to reduce fatalities and seriousinjuries using funds for:– Safety projects consistent with State SHSP– Safety projects to correct/improve a hazardous road
location/feature or address a highway safety problem
Limits HSIP eligibility to only those listed in statute

Include a detailed preliminary cost estimate– Include PE, CEI, contingencies, and R/W if available– Inflation may be considered in the estimate if selected

Lessons Learned
SRTS Applications must be accurate, detailed, fullycompleted, and presented on time.
Surveys and Tallies must be fully completed andentered into the NCSRTS’s database.
The requested items need to be approved,constructible, feasible and cost effective.
Need to present proof of Right of Way andsupporting crash data.
2017/2018 Safe Routes to School (SRTS)
Objective
Facilitate the planning, development, andimplementation of projects that will improvesafety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption,and improve air quality in the vicinity ofschools (K-12).
Application
SRTS Eligible applicants have now been extendedKindergarten through 12th grade (Private andCharter Schools are included).
SRTS 3.5 hour Workshop is MANDATORY. Onlyattendees will be allowed to submit applications.
The Student-In-Class Travel Tally and Parent Surveydata summaries need to be attached.
