“NORTHERN STARS SHINING BRIGHTLY”
1000th meeting at Essendon Toastmasters Club
From Paul Fanning, ACG, CL, Secretary, Treasurer, Essendon
Toastmasters Club
On Tuesday, 14th May 2019 Essendon Toastmasters Club was
privileged to have celebrated our 1,000th meetingsince chartering
on 1st July 1974. To mark the occasion we celebrated the event with
past and present members, along with a speech-a-thon and installed
our newest member Daniella. We celebrated in style with a special
supperand celebratory cake. Now I would like to paint a little of
the club’s early history.
In April 1974 Gerry McCormack from Melbourne Toastmasters led
the charge for the establishment of EssendonToastmasters Club by
publicising the benefits of Toastmasters membership that was a
non-profit organisationdevoted to assisting men to be better able
to communicate and express themselves through better
listening, thinking and speaking (Essendon Gazette, 17 April, 1974).
He went on to say that as a non-service organisation, the
organisation of the group is where members are only required to
fulfill their assignment at each meeting whichare generally held on
a fortnightly basis.
The first meeting of the club was held in either late April or
early May 1974 at the International Hotel in MathewsAvenue,
Airport West. Thereafter, meetings were to be held on
the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.Once the club achieved
a membership strength of twenty members, officially it became
a chartered Toastmastersclub in July 1974. The first officer
bearers of the club included Niall Quinn as club president, Wallace
Clarke asEducational Vice-President, John Dutton as Administrative
Vice-President, Henry Jacotine as Secretary, CliffordTalbot as
Treasurer, Gerry McCormack as Bulletin Editor and Alan Riddle as
Sergeant at Arms.
The longevity of the club has been greatly enhanced by such
luminaries as John Dutton, Jenny Wren and

Josephine Ward. Their unwavering dedication and commitment have
put the club on the map. A special mentiongoes to Josephine Ward
who after joining the club at 16, managed by the young age of 23 to
attain the honoraryposition of District Governor of District 73 in
July 1988. At the time Josephine was possibly the youngest
personever appointed and was responsible for 56 clubs scattered
throughout four states. Josephine had initially beenintroduced into
the organisation during a Youth Leadership course, that was led by
the late Jenny Wren.
Essendon Toastmasters is a community based club which meets on
the 2nd, 4th and 5th Tuesdays of the month at7.30 pm at the Moonee
Ponds Bowling Club, 776 Mount Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds. Along
with celebratingour 1,000th meeting, we have attained 10 DCP
points, including 17 educational awards.
All visitors are welcome to attend and discover our charm.

In 1969 TCB was a cool phrase to use. It was cool because it was
used by the King himself – ElvisPresley. The letters TCB stand for
‘Taking Care of Business’. TCB was the name of Elvis’ backing band
in1969, but the phrase is much more than a band’s name. It means to
get done what needs to get done. ToElvis, it was a business mantra
to take responsibility and get things done and done the right
way.
Today, TCB can stand for something else – ‘Taking Care of the
Brand’ – because after all, in today’sbusiness world, the ‘brand’
is the business. Businesses like BMW, Nike, MacDonalds,
Commonwealth Bank andVirgin, to name just a few, guard their brand
closely. Toastmasters as a global brand is no different. The
Toastmasters brand has been built up over many years and each
member of Toastmasters when they joina club, becomes a steward for
the brand, just like an employee at any organisation.
A brand is an exclusive and desirable idea embodied in products,
services and experiences. A brand has aset of values, a way of
operating and a position in the market. Just look at the company
names mentionedabove. They all have a distinct position in the
market and have a specific way of operating that alignswith their
brand.
Toastmasters has a singular, solid identity that should always
reflect the core attributes and approachof the organisation. As
Toastmasters, we need to be leaders and be consistent with the
identity of theToastmasters brand. From the professional and
supportive voice we communicate to our members and thecommunity, to
the educational programs we run; from the approach to running a
meeting, to the use ofvisual elements such as the corporate logo
and banner, all are important to achieve brand
consistency.
Here are 10 tips to keep you ‘on brand’:
1. As well as a member, you need to think like a steward of a
great organisation. You need to be TCB – TakingCare of the
Brand - regardless of whether you are in a leadership position or
not.
2. Don’t change any element of the logo – eg colours, shape, tag
lines or any other customisation. 3. Don’t create your own
logo.4. Always display the Toastmasters banner in meetings and
promotional events.5. Promote and use the core Pathways Educational
Program.6. Be positive and uplifting about the Toastmasters brand
and promote it with pride.7. Use the Toastmasters meeting
framework. It provides the experience and learning of transferable
skills that
can be used outside of Toastmasters.8. Live the Toastmasters
values of integrity, respect, service and excellence. These apply
to the brand as much
as to personal actions, and they should be anchor points for
every decision you make.9. Follow the Toastmasters Promise you made
when you joined Toastmasters.
10. Do the ‘Moments of Truth’ exercise with your club and view
each touch point from the perspective of thebrand.
You can find out more about how to use the brand correctly by
referring to the Brand Manual
- ToastmastersInternational
While you might not be the King like Elvis Presley, you can
still be a leader and make sure you are Taking Care ofBusiness by
‘Taking Care of the Toastmasters Brand’.

This is a speech by Janine Wan of Kew Toastmasters club,
submitted by Cindy Wu. As Cindy explains, "I had thepleasure
of being present when Janine presented this speech at Kew
Toastmasters club. It is a wonderfuland accessible explanation
about how we can navigate Pathways. I feel that it was of
benefit to those who are stillhaving trouble wrapping their heads
around this the format of the Pathways education program and asked
Janine ifI could share this with the District."
The Mountaineer by Janine Wan
This is a story you about my friend Toby.
Toby was looking for some excitement in his life, a new
challenge, so he went to a meeting of the Kewmountaineering
club. Well, the people there were warm and friendly, and they
were giving entertaining talks aboutthe wonderful climbs they had
completed. Toby was eager to climb a mountain himself, so
he decided to join theKew Mountaineering club and enrol in
their education course called Mountaineering Pathways 101.
Toby met with the Vice President of Expeditions, who explained
that Toby’s first decision would be to choose amountain to
climb. They were all beautiful, but some were steeper, others
longer, or more remote. Toby lookedthrough the description of the
mountains and thought about what goals he wanted to achieve in
climbing themountain, and he chose a mountain calledMount
Destiny.
Toby then headed out to Base Camp, where all the mountaineers
start. At Base Camp, Toby found a library with asign on the door
that said, “Education transcripts.” Toby feeling rather confused,
but he enjoyed problem solvingand sensed a challenge.
He looked up the words in his trusty dictionary. (Did I tell you
that Toby loves dictionaries?) He discovered that‘education’ means
training in a particular subject and ‘transcript’ means a written
version of material originallypresented in another medium.
“I get it!” said Toby. “In the old days, people would take
guides up the mountain who would show them the route totake, but
these days, all the information is stored in books or websites, and
now we can read it for ourselves. This iswhere I’ll find the
guidebooks!”
Toby entered the library and found the education transcripts.
There was another sign that said, 'Open Curriculum.'He got out his
trusty dictionary again. He learnt that a ‘curriculum’ is a course
of study and ‘course’ is another wordfor ‘route’. “The curriculum
will show me the route for climbing Mount Destiny!” exclaimed
Toby.
Toby opened his guidebook and found the route map for the first
climb on Mount Destiny. The Vice President ofExpeditions came in.
“Toby,” he said, “I see you are ready to be launched on your
course! Start reading, dearboy!” Toby read about the course he
would follow, and he thought about the skills he already had. In
the guide, Tobysaw that there was a form for his climbing coach to
complete.
“What’s this form?” Toby asked the VPE.
“That, my boy, is how your climbing coach gives you feedback.
Feedback is how we mountaineers learn, youknow!”
“I see,” said Toby. “That makes sense to me. The coach tells us
what we’re doing well and shows us techniques wecan use to improve.
Cool!”
Toby was so excited to start climbing Mt Destiny that he decided
to do his first climb almost immediately. As he puton his harness,
Toby started to feel anxious. “What if I get stuck?” he thought,
“or I can’t make it up the climb?” Heremembered the other
mountaineers telling him how they overcame their fear. “You can do
it!” he told himself. “Justbreathe and keep calm.”

Toby’s climbing buddy gave him an encouraging smile. He took a
deep breath and started to climb. The overhangwas tough, but he had
studied the route well and found his way past it. When he reached
the top, everyonecheered, and Toby felt full of pride and had a
great sense of accomplishment. Later, his climbing coach gave
himfeedback and when he rated his skills again, he realised that he
had learnt a lot from doing the climb, from theguidebook, and from
the tips his coach had given him. “Wow,” thought Toby, “This system
really works!”
Toby went on to do many more climbs and he eventually reached
the top of Mount Destiny. The view was sospectacular that Toby
wanted to help other climbers to achieve such heights. He did lots
of coaching, and he stillclimbs today.
“Joining Kew Mountaineering club and enrolling in Mountaineering
Pathways 101 was one of the best things I everdid!” said Toby.
You might be wondering how Toby’s story relates to you.
Well, let me point out some similarities between Mountaineering
Pathways 101 and the Toastmasters programcalled Pathways.
Firstly, once you’ve signed up for Pathways, you must select a
Path. Your Mount Destiny may be EffectiveCoaching, or Visionary
Communication. Then to prepare for a speech, go to Base Camp, then
Education Transcript, then Open Curriculum, then Launch.
Make sure your project is in a full screen window, then read the
detailed description of your project and assess yourskills. Don’t
forget to print out your evaluation resources for your
evaluator.
After you’ve given your speech you receive feedback from your
evaluator and rate your skills again. This completesthe project and
you will be ready to launch a new project.
So, I encourage you, like Toby, to get involved. Launch that
project, climb that mountain, and enjoy the rewards ofthe
spectacular view from the top!

collective learnings.
HandoverCongratulations, you are almost finished in your term as
club VPPR. Hopefully a new VPPR has been elected andyou are
getting ready to handover the reigns. Therefore, ensuring they are
prepared for the role is very important, this is in addition to what
is included in the Club Officer Leadership handbook which covers
the generalexpectations, roles and responsibilities for each club
officer position. Your handover is important for the
followingadditional reasons:
It is important to know what aspects of PR worked well for your
club and what to do differently. It is important to understand
if there are any nuances in your club – what social media platforms
do you use?How often are they maintained and updated?Do you have a
calendar of events in readiness for promotional activities?
You may recall the following guidelines I shared in the
beginning of your term, which I will email and hope you sharewith
the new VPPR:1. Guardians of the Toastmasters brand a. Task 1
– ensure your club website is using the correct TI branding, is
current, vibrant and up to date2. Responsible for creating a plan
to keep our members informed of the club, district and TI events
and news a. Task 2 – work with your club executive
committee and plan a calendar of events for your club. This
helps youin your PR role along with helps your members know about
these events3. Key to generating PR opportunities
a. Task 3 – attend the district PR Zoom session and learn
from your fellow VPPRs 4. Tasked with motivating members
to get and stay involved a. Task 4 – provide regular
updates at club meetings, including either yourself of members of
the club contributingarticles to the district5. Contributors
to your club and the district newsletter, website and social media
– sharing articles of what ishappening in your club. a.
Task 5 – share news worthy articles
I hope you enjoyed your journey and look forward to hearing your
stories in our final Zoom session, or meeting youat a future
