Something to think about before teaching:

Three different types of offices were anointed during the Old Testament: priests, prophets and kings. Physical anointing, by pouring of perfumed oil on a person’s head, was a way of showing the person was set apart for a sacred purpose. Jesus would fulfill all three of these roles.

Psalm 2:2 is known as a royal psalm or messianic psalm as it points toward the Messiah, Jesus. Both the words Messiah and Christ mean anointed. Jesus was chosen by God for a sacred purpose, that of bringing salvation to man. He would be rejected by the “kings” and “rulers” but would still accomplish what He had been anointed to do.

listeningthe pitchy twins Supplies: Stemmed water glass, costumes

Preparation: Fill the water glass one half full of water. Lo is in the lab working on an experiment. He has a stemmed glass with water in it and it trying to get it to “sing” by wetting the rim and moving his finger around it slowly.

Hi: (Comes running in.) Lo, I have some exciting news for you.

Lo: Shh! I can’t hear my experiment over your voice.

Hi: What experiment? I don’t hear anything exploding.

Lo: Right here. I am attempting to produce sound from this glass of water by delicately running my finger around the rim of the glass. It is quite difficult you know.

Hi: Uh huh. (Shakes his head.) Don’t you have more fun by producing LOUD explosions, shrieks of laughter, high pitched squeals and loud rumbling engines?

Lo: No, not really.

Hi: I give up.

Lo: On what?

Hi: Never mind. The reason I came to the lab is extraordinarily exciting. This is going to blow your socks off.

Lo: I don’t have socks on. See. (Shows no socks.)

Hi: (Sighs.) The point is we have been chosen as one of the finalist for Sound Lab of the Year. (Pumps air with fist, jumps around the lab, hoots and hollers. Meanwhile Lo politely claps.)

Lo: That is wonderful. (Goes back to his experiment.)

Hi: We need to make something really loud for when the judges come. Something that will rock the entire Imagination Factory. Something that is... that is... LEGENDARY.

Lo: Well, I was thinking of something more dignified. Something that would make the judges stop and say, “Awww.” Something to make them think.

Hi: Are you kidding me? We don’t want them to think. We want them to be astounded. We want them to be amazed. We want them to walk away SAYING this is the most awesome lab they have ever visited in their whole entire existence.

Lo: I disagree.

Hi: You what?

Lo: Disagree.

Hi: How could you? This plan is monumental. It will get us chosen as Lab of the Year. We will be set apart from the rest.

Lo: Perhaps, but I disagree. (Goes back to the experiment.)

Hi: How can you disagree? JUST LIKE THAT! YOU DISAGREE. YOU ALWAYS DISAGREE WITH ME. IF I SAY HOT YOU SAY COLD. IF I SAY LOUD YOU SAY SOFT.

Lo: Perhaps. But I still respect you as a scientist. We just don’t agree is all.

Hi: ERRRRR. We will NEVER be chosen!!! (Storms out of the lab.)

Lo: (Looks up as Hi leaves, shrugs his shoulders and goes back to the experiment.) I think we could be chosen.

Supplies: Container of olive oil (Any container that looks “old”), bowl, plastic cup, Powerpoint

Preparation: If doing the display, print Anointed sign. Fold it into a tent sign. Place the plastic cup on a stand or small table. Choose 6 kids to play the game. Divide them into two teams. It is time to play Guess the Sound. You are going to have to be very quiet and listen carefully. A sound will be played after which our two contestants will try to be the first one to guess the sound.

(Divide the room into two sections and assign a team to each section. Have the kids cheer for their teams.) I will have each team line up on either side of the cup. Each team will need to decide who will go first, second and third. The team members going first will stand beside the cup. When they hear the sound, the first one to grab the cup will have a chance to guess the sound. If he/she is incorrect, the other player will have an opportunity to guess. If both are incorrect, they may then confer with their team and the audience and come up with one additional answer.

After the first sound is guessed, then the second and then third players will play.

PP Sound #1: Wind ChimesPP Sound #2: ElephantPP Sound #3: Drop of oil dripping

What would a drop of liquid falling into more liquid have to do with a name of Jesus? In the Bible, sometimes people were anointed with oil. This means that the oil was poured onto their heads. (Take the container of oil and pour a little bit out into a bowl.) This anointing had different meanings. One meaning was that the person was set aside (or chosen) for something sacred.

One of Jesus’ names is Anointed. He was set apart by God to save man. He was anointed by God to come to earth. God chose Him to do this.

Options: Display: Place the container of oil in the display area. Label it with the sign “Anointed.”

No Power Point: If you do not have access to power point, either play the sounds on a computer hooked into a sound system, purchase a cd of sound effects to use or make the sounds “live.”

Read Psalm 2:2 together:

PP The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed. Psalm 2:2

Let’s say the verse again but this time we are going to make some sounds effects as we say the verse.

5

The kings (Say “ka chink” as place imaginary crown on head.)Of the earth set themselves (Stomp feet and stand straight.)And the rulers (Say “do what I say” stomping feet again.)Take counsel together against the LORD (Say “oh no.”)And against his Anointed (Pour imaginary oil over imaginary head.)Psalm 2:2

Blue Kid Group PP Supplies: Glass jars, food coloring, water, golf balls, dowel rods or wooden spoons

Preparation: Place different amounts of water in the glass jars. Put a few drops of food coloring in each jar according to color desired. Line jars up on a table according to height of water.

Have the kids develop a routine in which they use the dowel rods or wooden spoons to gently hit the jars producing different sounds. Then, drop the golf balls into the jars one by one.

InvestigatingKey Bible Story PP Jesus in the SynagogueLuke 4:18-30

Supplies: Scroll, “Isaiah 61:1-2a” pageNote: A scroll can be created from a sheet of long paper rolled up on either side. For authenticity, glue dowel rods on the ends that stick out both at the top and the bottom.

Preparation: Print out the verse and tape it inside the scroll. During the time of the New Testament, the synagogue was a place where people went to wor-

Page 6: This Lesson contains - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/Sound Lab Lesson 3.pdfPsalm 2:2 is known as a royal psalm or messianic psalm as it points toward

ship. It was the custom for men to go into the synagogue, pick up the scrolls of scripture, read them and talk about them. One day as Jesus came to Nazareth, he went to the synagogue and did just that. He stood up to read and a scroll was given Him. This scroll was from Isaiah, a book that is in what we now call the Old Testament. Jesus unrolled the scroll and began to read.

Let’s stand together and read like Jesus did. (Either have the kids read from the screen or look up the scripture in their Bibles located in Isaiah 61:1-2a. Unroll the scroll and read from it or have a volunteer lead the reading.)

PP “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

When Jesus finished reading, He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant. Then He sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on Him. What would He say about the scripture He had just read?

He said, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus was saying that He was the One anointed to do these things. He came to proclaim good news to the poor. He came to proclaim liberty to the captives. He came to give sight to the blind and liberty to the oppressed. What does that mean?

PP 1. To set people free from their sins. 2. To heal people physically and spiritually.3. To teach people how to treat one another.

This is what Jesus, as the Anointed, was set apart to do. He came to earth not just to perform miracles and teach but to save us from our sins.

6

At first, the people listening spoke well of Him. They could not believe the words that were coming from His mouth. But after awhile, the people became angry with Him. They rose up against Him and drove Him out of town and were going to throw Him down a cliff. But in the confusion, He was able to get away. The people of His own hometown had rejected Him.

Our Bible verse todays says, “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed.” Psalm 2:2

Psalm 2:2 looked ahead to the time when Jesus would come to earth. It foretold that people would be against Him.

We have a choice to make. Jesus, the Anointed, was set apart by God to save man. Are we going to make the choice to follow Him? To ask Him to save us from our sins? Or are we going to follow the world and set ourselves against Jesus?

Prayer PP Thank God for sending Jesus as the Anointed. Give kids an opportunity to think about whether they are choosing to follow the Anointed or set themselves against Him. Give them time to pray for forgiveness and to make the choice to follow the Anointed One.

sound test lab: drinking glass music PP

Supplies: 8 drinking glasses, water, spoon

Preparation: Put a small amount of water in one glass. Fill each of the glasses with a bit more water. Line them up in order and gently tap the glasses with a spoon. Get someone with a good ear for music to listen and adjust the water levels of the glasses to play a scale-do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti do. Find someone who can come in during the Sound Test Lab to play a song using the water glasses and spoon-something simple such as “Mary Had a Little Lamb” or “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

Let’s see if we can make sounds using only a spoon, water and a drinking glass. (Choose a volunteer to hit different glasses. Instruct them to hit them one at a time playing a scale.)

We have a special guest who will play a song using these glasses. Do you think that is possible? (Introduce the guest and listen to the song.) Can you guess what song she/he played?

It is amazing that we can use such simple items to make beautiful sounds that form a song. Jesus used a simple, every day type of time in the synagogue to proclaim who He was. Reading Scripture in the synagogue was a common time. Yet, He used that time to announce that He was the Anointed. He often did that in His life, using simple times outside or on a boat to teach people. What Jesus had to say was so powerful, yet, He said it during every day life.

Page 8: This Lesson contains - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/Sound Lab Lesson 3.pdfPsalm 2:2 is known as a royal psalm or messianic psalm as it points toward

Are we using simple everyday life to proclaim the same good news? That Jesus came to set people free from sin? Do we feel like we have to make a big proclamation or that it has to come from someone we think is important? Or can we just simply talk about it in a gentle way?

When we talk about Jesus it should be similar to the music we made with the glasses. Simple. Gentle. Not loud and in your face. Not judgmental. Something that sounds beautiful. How do we tell others about Jesus? Does it sound like music or does it sound harsh like yelling or anger?

Jesus did not fight with the people arguing about who He was. He simply slipped away when they got angry. He knew that some would set themselves up against Him. However, He still came to set people free. He still fulfilled the plan God had. Remember that Jesus, as the Anointed, was set apart by God to save men.

Let’s say our Bible verse again to remind us of Jesus’ name.

PP The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed. Psalm 2:2

group production: sound trumpetSupplies: Cardstock, tape

Divide the kids into groups of no more than 10. Give each group enough cardstock for each member and a roll of tape for the group.

Each group needs to think of a name for your group. I will give you one minute to come up with a name.

8

When I point to your group, you should shout out your name as a group. Each group should listen care-fully to the other groups’ names.

We are going to do this again, but this time put your hands around both sides of your mouth so that you are louder. Do you think the groups sounded louder this time?

Now I want you to take the paper and

Page 9: This Lesson contains - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/Sound Lab Lesson 3.pdfPsalm 2:2 is known as a royal psalm or messianic psalm as it points toward

9

roll it up to make a cone. Use the tape to hold it together. One end of the cone should be wide with the other end narrow with a hole in it. It should look like an ice cream cone except the bot-tom should be open. (Demonstrate as you talk.)

After everyone has made their cone: Now we are going to try the sound experiment again. This time put the cone up to your mouth and yell the name through it.

Did the groups sound louder?

I am going to whisper something. See if you can hear me. (Try whispering different names of kids and have the teams guess what you are saying.)

Now, put the cone up next to your ear with the narrow end pointing towards you ear and the large end pointing towards me. DO NOT PUT THE CONE IN YOUR EAR! (Again whisper names of kids and allow the teams to guess what you are saying.)

Both speaking and listening are important. When we think about the story today we know that Jesus spoke important words. The people listened at first. However, they became angry and would not listen anymore.

We should be careful that we do not just proclaim words about Jesus, the Anointed but that we also spend time listening to Him. We need to be willing to listen to Him so He can work in us. If we spend all our time talking and little time listening, we will miss what He has to say to us.

Let’s practice listening for a moment. Let’s just be very still and sit quietly. I am going to read the verse from the story again. Close your eyes.Listen carefully to what Jesus said:

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed.” Isaiah 61:1-2a NLT

testingthe sound laboratory: drinking glass soundSupplies: Drinking glasses and spoons from The Sound Test Lab

Preparation: Line up the drinking glasses on a table for the kids. If you have a large number of kids, you may wish to have more glasses and set up more stations.

Give the kids an opportunity to make different sounds with the glasses and make up songs. A fun varia-tion is for one person at the station to play a few notes and the kids try to play the same notes.

After the kids have finished, remind them that when we proclaim Jesus, the Anointed, to others that it should sound like beautiful music. We should not yell it. We should tell it from a heart full of love for Je-sus, not one of condemning others. Jesus was anointed to come and set people free not condemn them.

craft: sound stickSupplies: Paint stir sticks, twine, markers or paint Note: Thin pieces of wood cut about 12 inches long, 1 inch wide and ¼ inch thick can be used.

Preparation: Drill a small hole at the end of each stick. Cut the twine into 3 feet long pieces.

Have the kids decorate the sticks using the markers or paint. Write the names of Jesus they have learned so far on the stick. Thread a piece of twine through the small hole and tie.

The sound sticks should only be used in wide open places such as a gym or outside. Hold the end of the twine and swing it above the head away from other people. It should make a loud sound.

10

Remind the kids that Jesus proclaimed the truth of who He was. We can do the same in the world by explaining what His name means to others.

Page 11: This Lesson contains - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/Sound Lab Lesson 3.pdfPsalm 2:2 is known as a royal psalm or messianic psalm as it points toward

11

Game: guess the chosen oneHave the kids sit in a large circle. One person is picked to be the “guesser” and leaves the room. Point to one kid to be the “chosen one.” When the guesser comes back in the room, the chosen one starts to do a rhythm motion such as hitting legs with both hands, clapping, snapping or rubbing hands together. Every-one quickly does the same. The chosen one should switch motions every once in awhile trying to hide the switch from the guesser.

The guesser has three guesses to figure out who the chosen one is.

Discuss with the kids that we do not have to guess who the Chosen One is. We know from Scripture that Jesus was chosen by God. We know that He is the Anointed One set apart by God to save men.

Bible Memory activity: Scroll

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed. Psalm 2:2

Supplies: popsicle sticks, paper, scissors, markers, tape

Make a scroll by taping popsicle sticks to the ends of a piece of paper. Write the Bible verse on the scroll. Roll up and keep as a reminder of Jesus as the Anointed. Note: For younger kids, print copies of the verse for them to glue or tape inside the scroll.

Snack: bread and oilSupplies: Olive oil, Italian bread, paper plate

Give each child a slice of Italian bread. Have them take turns slowly pouring a little bit of oil on their plate. Dip the bread in the oil.

Remind the kids that the symbol for Anointed is the oil because it was used to anoint people who were set aside for special jobs by God.

Name: Anointed

Symbol: container of oil

Verse: The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed. Psalm 2:2

Give each child the card. If using the coloring cards, use markers or crayons to decorate them. Go over the verse together and review the symbol.

Bible Verse: The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers

take counsel together, against the LORD and against his

Anointed. Psalm 2:2

Bible Story:

Jesus in the Syna-gogue, Luke 4:16-30

Main Point: Jesus, the Anointed, was set apart by God

to save man.

Family Debriefing: 1. What does it mean to be anointed? (set apart for a sacred purpose)2. Have your child tell how Jesus read from the scroll in the synagogue. Read Luke 4: 18-19 to see what He said. 3. What was Jesus anointed to do?

Family Imaginative Thinking:Make a scroll similar to the one Jesus read. Write Luke 4:18-19 in it but put in in your own words. Take turns standing and reading it to the family like Jesus did in the synagogue.

Family Activity:Look in your pantry and find different kinds of oil. Or go to the grocery store to look for oil and buy three kinds. Open the oil up and pour it on your finger. Kings, priests and prophets would be anointed by pouring oil on their head. Jesus was not anointed this way but by God who chose Him.
