Introduction

Hopes, dreams and rights share certain similarities. They defy simple description, they are an important part of us and define who we are. Although they cannot be seen or touched we need to hold onto them, because they can easily be taken away, stolen, or lost. Once they are gone, they are difficult to find again.

The 52 stories and poems presented here were written by the winners of the 2017 Tower Hamlets Creative Writing Competition, the theme of which was Children’s Rights, hopes and dreams. In partnership with the HEC Global Learning Centre and the Syrian Nonviolence Movement, pupils from Syrian schools and children from Tower Hamlets schools submitted their work to the competition, writing not only about their own experiences, but their dreams of the future.

The Tower Hamlets Schools Library Services would like to thank:

The Arts Council England for helping to fund the author workshops and the publication of this book

Sufiya Ahmed, for shortlisting the Tower Hamlets entries and final judging, prize-giving and workshops

ForewordIn this second year of our Creative Writing Link between schools in Tower Hamlets (London) and Syria, our focus has been on the human capacity to dream of a better world. Using conceptual triggers around Children’s Rights and convention-trumping writing techniques, our children thought about each other and their future together. This dual language anthology captures some of the writing born out of two countries in the process.

Our special thanks go out once again to the heroic work of our partners, the civil society organisation, Syrian Nonviolence Movement, who work tirelessly to ensure the children caught up in this conflict zone continue to receive a decent education where the rights of children are championed and global channels remain open for the exchange of ideas, mutual learning and solidarity with other children across the world.

Hopes and Dreams

I am your child but really I’m not

I’m independent and I shall not be bought.

I try my best, so I can beat the rest.

I’m on a quest and that is to succeed the test.

You can hurt my body but not my soul.

Achieving happiness is my goal.

Hopes and dreams fragile little things.

They can be broken with no word spoken.

But you can protect the fragility.

Protect it from the hostility.

Make it grow into something, don’t let it be nothing.

Life is a gift; let it not be dissed.

Choose not to light that is what’s right.

I want to be ordinary that’s what makes me extraordinary.

Create motivation that’s what makes it inspiration.

Make love that’s what takes you above.

People who choose not to go up they are the ones that are corrupt.

Never agree to disagree then you will be unhappy.

Imagine that you could become;

Show the world how it’s done.

Increase humanity and decrease popularity.

Fail one hundred or more one success will clear it all.

The world maybe stupendous.

But your dreams are tremendous.

I will work hard every day and I will work hard every night.

I will light with all my might and my family will he there aside.

I will show the world what I can then they will know who I am.

I want to be a footballer that is what I want to be when I’m older,

I will play for passion that is what will bring attraction,

I will autographs to other fans because I was one when I was a young lad.

Never give up on dreams because it is never too late to succeed.

My talent is unknown.

but I will bring it out of the shadows.

This is why a house is made of bricks and beams.

When a home is made of hopes and dreams.

The Adventurous Child

One upon a time, a long time ago there were two children who loved adventures and one day they decided to go to an island and there they saw a cave which was very dark. So they lit up a flame and when they entered they realised it was a very grand palace. On the palace’s walls there were symbols. The two children wanted to collect those symbols so they went their separate ways to do so. Once they had collected all the symbols and put them together they acted as a key that opened a door and they went inside.

During that time both of the children’s parents were searching for them everywhere.

Inside the cave the children saw something that lit up magnificently so they got closer to find out what the light was, only for wild animals to start attacking them. So they hid behind the rocks and soon they got lost in the cave. They were searching for a way out from this dark cave when wild beasts surrounded and trapped them but the children suddenly spotted a big window which they went through and it saved them from this near death.

One of the children, Huthaifa, exclaimed “We have escaped safely, thanks to God’s blessing” and his friend Ahmed replied “Yes. You are so right my friend”. They soon headed home and when they arrived at the village they went their separate ways to their houses. Both of the boys’ fathers were awaiting their arrival. The next day, the two boys set off to school in the morning and when the school day finished they decided

to visit the deserted island which they have named ‘The brave champions’ island’. They got permission from their parents before going to the island and when they entered it they both said we should be aware of the wild animals and one of them said “If we see a wild animal we should separate then run and hide”. Huthaifa thought, “Oh God how I dream of finding treasure!” But Ahmed had a different dream - “I dream of discovering a castle underground.”

While he was discovering the cave, Huthaifa found a bird and he realised that it was a swallow. He went to look for Ahmed and said, “ I found a really beautiful bird. What do you think about us taking care of it?”. Ahmed agreed that they will look after the bird and in the evening he put the bird on a tree and they slept. The next morning Huthaifa could not find the bird so he asked Ahmed “Where is the bird?”, to which Ahmed replied “The bird slept beside me”.

From that day the bird and Ahmed were inseparable and Ahmed began teaching him flying very high. On their way to their tent, Ahmed announced that the bird will sleep with him, but Huthaifa insisted that the bird sleep beside him instead. Ahmed replied with a firm no! So Huthaifa said “Alright, I have found a solution, the bird will sleep one day with you and the next day with me”. Ahmed agreed to this solution and Huthaifa took the bird to sleep with him this night and they turned the lamps off and went to sleep.

The next morning, both boys were training the bird to fly high and to learn how to catch his food and when they were done they walked through the forest with the swallow bird on Ahmed’s shoulder. Suddenly they noticed a shining sword on the ground. Ahmed announced that he will carry the sword and it will become his own, and Huthaifa agreed. The two

went on searching for food as they were very hungry. On their way they found a goat and its mother so the boys took them to the tent. They milked the goats and ate dinner then slept with the bird beside Huthaifa. That night when it grew dark they heard wolves, so the boys put the goats and the bird inside the tent while they went to fight the wolves, but the wolves were huge and there were so many of them. The boys decided to light up the fire and started throwing enflamed logs at the wolves until they ran away. On their way home the next morning they let the bird and the goat go.

Their return journey lasted two days and on the third day in the evening they reached their homes and they were so happy as they said to each other “sweet and happy dreams”. In the morning the boys went to school and told their friends about their adventure:

“I saw a goat and looked after it”, said HuthaifaAnd Ahmed added “Me too! I looked after a Swallow!’ The two boys dreamt of becoming great explorers one day!

Nightmare

I once had a dream, a malevolent illusionShadowing above me were spirits of evilSuddenly, I came to the conclusionThat it must be the work of the devil

I sought to escape from the depths of despair,Was it her the one I hated for life? With the venomous eyes and the vicious glareDid she seek revenge with a jagged knife?

She came towards me closer and closerShe was surrounded by her dominant gangThere were so many of them that it was a blurUntil she revealed her glistening fangs

She bit hard into my lifeless skinCrimson blood oozing outMy head going in a total spinI was dying and there was no way out

War Child

I looked up and saw grey, grey clouds. Grey trees and grey sky. Everything had turned grey since Bleu died. I looked back down at my horrible uniform and the rifle in my hand. I had a rifle but it was not loaded, we had run out of ammunition, so no protection and now no brother. Bleu had been like a parent to me keeping me safe when I was scared. I had really loved him. I looked at my foot. It was hurting where I had been injured in the shooting and one by one tears dribbled down my face. “Bleu I need you”, I muttered my voice cracking with sadness.

“Hurry up you! Crying won’t help you “ shouted a voice. So I got up. War child doesn’t argue. War child doesn’t doubt. Just get up and follow orders. I didn’t feel like Gabriela anymore, just a lonely worthless war child.

“Hey.” came a voice from behind me, a hand went on my shoulder. I turned quickly and saw a boy. Same uniform, same gun, same sadness. “Hi.” I muttered but my voice was cracked and I looked down in embarrassment.“Hey, don’t be sad. I know your pain. I will care for you. Yeah?” he said, putting a finger under my chin.“O.K.” I muttered looking up to him, then followed him glumly towards a camp further south. As we reached the camp I was curious about the boy’s name.“What’s your name?” I whispered looking at him.“We can get to that later. What’s your name?”“Gabriela.” I muttered, getting more comfortable with talking

to him.“Let’s get to the camp then, Gabriela.” he smiled.

We sat down by a wall in a sad silence until he said “You look hungry. I saved this for you, you can have it.” He passed me a piece of bread and I nibbled it greedily. The taste of the soft bread slid down my throat.

“W…What’s your ...name?” I whispered. “What is it?”“I’m... I’m Bleu.” he smiled. And suddenly it didn’t feel like Bleu was another useless war child. I felt like Bleu was my parent, my new brother, my new protection.I smiled and this time I didn’t care if my lips cracked and bled, because I had found my brother again.

Hopes and Dreams

hope, a plea, a dream occurred to me on a fine clear night as I looked to the sky

my eyes cried as tears fell on my cheeks and I felt as though they will turn to blood

I closed my eyes and forget my pain and flew happily to ask for help

from a cruel world that wronged me and took away my rights for no reason.

what has a young girl at the peak of her childhood done to live a life and enjoy her existence

my life has been taken away from me and my tears have dried up as all my rights were stripped off me as well

my soul flew to that sky, escaping my dark and bloody reality

I dosed off on a white fog as though it was my mum hugging me tenderly

so she asked me ‘What’s wrong my darling petal? Your tears are agonising me’

so I asked her ‘Aren’t we Allah’s beloved? How is it that our lives are taken away from us without our permission?

what wrong have I done to be pushed into this war, I don’t know my begining or end.

where is my school and where are my classmates? Where is my schoolbag and where are my pens?

where is my smile and where are my toys? How do we live without what has become so much a part of us?

where are the children’s protectors? Where are those who claimed innocence?

we are not asking for eternal existence, we did not ask for anything but for a life with dignity

it is our right to be happy without any sadness, and be blessed with safety and security

How do we live such a life? When it is full of oppression, injustice and pain

has the world not woken up yet from its silence? Or have we been wiped completely from their memory?

we have become birds without wings, so how can we fly above home towns and countries?

how can we be heard without voices and how can we narrate the most beautiful of rhythms and melodies?

we have aged before our times and we have become thirsty like a dehydrated bird

I don’t want anything from you all except my life and that we live as children like any other children

suddenly my fog became sad and started crying after she got upset by my story

she said don’t be sad my child, for you are the birds of life and paradise

The Right to Live

My name’s Abiona. It means born on a journey. I’m an albino: my hair and skin is white, my pink eyes can’t focus. I had a mama.

This is the story of how I died.

As an albino, many think I’m a curse, but if they own a body part of mine, they will become rich. I wish everyone would see me as they would see anyone else... I live in a small village in Kenya. People here are good people, getting on with their lives. It was a quiet life, the kind of life I liked.

I walked down the road one morning, going to get some water from the rivers that surround Kenya. They were far away.“Abiona, be careful!” Mama had said before I left. I carrried on walking, and soon came to the edge of our village. I breathed in. I took a step, the first step of my journey.

An hour passed. At home, mama would be praying. I passed a small village where the witch doctors lived. I ran away swiftly. But I was spotted.“We will be rich!” he yelled, grinning cruelly. Uh-oh. I sprinted on, hoping I would make it out alive. As a human, I had the right to be my own person. As a child, I had the rightto think what I want to think. And as both, I have the right to live.

I prayed under my breath, nearing the edge of the village, but

it was surrounded by spikes. Close behind were the bad men. I knew I had to face my fears. I spun round, and put on my best English accent.

“My, how dare you, fools! Leave me be! Brats!” I shouted, faking outrage. They ran back, scared. I couldn’t see them properly, but they fell for it. I laughed and jumped carefully over the spikes, holding the big bottle. I walked on, giggling despite myself.

Finally. The outskirts of Kenya. I whooped for joy and punched the air, dancing the dance the villagers taught me when I was five. I collected two pints of water and carried it on my head. I took the long way, around the village of doctors this time. For good measure. Did it do any good? No.“Hey!” shouted a witch doctor. He had a penknife in his hand. It glinted in the morning sun. I paused. He paused. I ran. He ran after me. I went back the way I came, closely followed by the doctor.

So here we are. Where I die.

Destiny? I didn’t believe in it. But this was a path I was meant to take. A death I had to make. But not today.I ran. Ran. It was as if the rivers were waiting to save me. There was a boat waiting on the still water. I clambered onto it, and rowed away. Away from my life. I’m safe. I’m safe.Mama’s prayers were answered. Justice in the world.

This is my dream.

Hopeless Life

Sometimes I feel, like there is no point to appeal.I lower my head, and feel no bed. When I see a sheep, which shouts out ‘bleep’.Then I wonderunder the thunder, how it became to be free, like white people can be.Suddenly the whip crackled on my back, like a fatal attack.Bringing me back down, planting a frownacross my face, forcing me to remember this placeThe wire gatesdecide our fates;to work and stay, until our last day.A black camp,Is filled with damp. The stretching mine, has a perfect design.Perfect to,Stop people getting through.

The Border

Boom! Suddenly, tank shells were fired bringing terror and crashing into buildings, cars and shops. The sound of people’s screams was faint in the midst of this sudden battle. I scurried out of my room desperate to leave my flat before a tank shell lands and ends me.Frantically, I put my small, grey and worn out shoes on and loosely wrapped my coat around my body. This was no time for being slow and steady, I had to escape. I zoomed down the stairs as fast as lightning and darted out of the door. The world suddenly changed, I was surrounded by destruction.

The tank shells lay waste to everything, sky scrapers came falling to their knees. Debris and ash filled the air and dead bodies lay scattered amidst the rubble. My stomach churned wildly at the sight. “Quickly, citizens please calm down we will get you out of here.” I ran toward the crowd and saw a cluster of people waiting desperately to escape. Like a dancer I weaved myself through the crowd to the front. A short crippled man stood trying to bring order as people were being evacuated in large green trucks. It was chaos.

“You there quick, get in.” Obediently, I got in the truck without knowing where it was heading. Gradually, our truck drove away leaving the hive of people and heading east. The sight was horrific. Our city lay in chaos, slowly dying a painful death and being buried beneath the rubble. Every dream I ever had, every hope buried six feet underground. The people beside me were huddled together in small groups, supposedly families crying and sobbing to the terror their young children

had to witness. The children looked so innocent, pale and cold. They did not deserve this. What they deserved was a chance in life, to love, to hope and to regret.

Slowly, the deafening sound of the tanks faded into the distance as we were approaching our destination. The border.

Screech!

All of a sudden the truck came to a halt. “Here’s your stop” the driver announced. One by one we got off the truck and were greeted by a huge sign and one stretch of clean tarmac road surrounded by sand. Instantly I knew I was on my own. No-one was going to help, care or worry about anything I did because it was every person or family for themselves. I tried to follow them like they were a herd of sheep. To follow to see where it would lead to. Slowly, I turned my head and looked back at my once beautiful home.

Sunset was upon me, soon I would be wandering helplessly under the watchful eyes of the stars. The sun was crimson red like it was bathed in blood with hints of amber which burned brightly illuminating the path. The sound of tank shells and screaming people clouded and took over my thoughts. There were still people back there waiting for their chance to escape and flee from the battlefield. They are probably scared, fearing for their lives as well as their loved ones. None of us had time to bring anything with us like a form of identification so we are not escaping, we are just entering another form of prison. We deserve better.

A’amr in a Small House

A long time ago there was a child named A’amr. His brothers were called Ahmed and Mahmoud while his sisters were called Sana’ and Wafa’. They all lived together in a small house with their parents. A’amr was the youngest of his siblings and he never took a wrong step.

One day he was playing football outside because his room was too small to play football inside. As he was kicking the ball it hit one of the neighbour’s mirrors. This made the neighbour angry at A’amr, so A’amr went inside to play with his dog whilst singing at the top of his voice. Because he shared his small room with his siblings they all got irritated, especially because they were trying to study .

“Don’t sing while we are studying”, they would say.

A’amr would reply, “I have the right to sing”

“Yes, you do have the right to sing but not while we are all studying”, his siblings would say.

A’amr did not listen to them and carried on singing. Then he turned off the light because he wanted to sleep, but the siblings said to him, “We are studying and you turned the light off. How will we be able to study in darkness?”

A’amr just gave them the same reply “I have the right to sleep”, to which the siblings repeated their usual answer “Yes, it is your right to sleep, but it is our right to study”.

Meanwhile, A’amr dreamt of having his own bedroom. One

day he asked his mother “When will I have a bedroom of my own?” She replied, “You will have your own room when we have enough money to buy a bigger house, because right now we work day and night to feed you good, healthy food”.

He then went and asked his father the same question “When will we have a big house so I get to have my own bedroom?”, and the father replied “When we have enough money”. A’amr wondered if he will have a room with his sister Sana’, and the father said, “I want you to have your own bedroom so you can sing as much as you like, and sleep whenever you want without disturbing your siblings, and bring your little dog to the bedroom when you like”.

A’amr then went and he found his little dog sitting in a small wooden house that his father had made, but he looked sad. A’amr asked the dog, “Why are you sad, my dear dog?”, and the dog replied “Because I am far away from my family”. A’amr said “But I thought we were your family and I am your brother. Soon I will have my own bedroom and you can come inside whenever you want to. We will play and eat delicious food! You see, my parents told me that when we have enough money they will buy a big house in the neighbouring village! We will go and play in the garden of the neighbouring villages and we will eat tasty food because the food there is cheaper, more delicious and healthier and…. very cheap! Come on, let’s go outside to play because my siblings get annoyed when you come inside, and mum tells me not to let the you inside”.

The dog said he did not want to play. “I am thinking about my family, and the might be looking for me this very minute while I am sitting here”.

A’amr reassured the dog that he knew where his family is, and that tomorrow in the early morning he would take the dog to

his family.”

“I am so excited to see my family, especially my mum and dad! I have not seen them for a long time ago” the dog told A’amr.

A’amr replied “I will bring all your family back here to live with us. My father and I will build a big wooden house for them and you. And when my father buys us a bigger house we will play all together with your mum, dad and siblings in my bedroom.”

In the morning A’amr and the dog went to find the dog’s family, and the dog went to his mother and said “I have missed you so much”, then he turned to his father and said “I have missed you so much”, and he went to his brother and said “I have missed you so much”, then he asked his mother “Where is my sister?”. His mother told him that his sister had died a month ago.

They all went to A’amr’s house and seven days later A’amr’s father made enough money to buy a big new house, he built wooden houses for the dogs, and A’amr got his own bedroom.

A’amr now sings whenever he wants, turns the lights off to sleep when he wants, and brings the dogs into his bedroom when he wants.

Imagining my Escape

BOOM, CRASH, and CRIESAre the sounds that meet my ears,

Day in and day out.

But that is only when I see with my eyesand hear with my ears.

As the noise does down and my vision blurs,I walk into my world of bliss.

Where there is no war, no discrimination, and no racism.

Where the flowers bloom, healthy and brightand the stars shine a pearly white.

Where I once again see the smiling facesOf my beloved mother and my caring

father

Where everyone is friendsAnd someone always has your back.

Where fighting is illegaland friendship is a law.

Where happiness reigns,And laughter washes in with the shore.

Where heartache, pain and povertyAre part of story

Told by dwellers of reality.

“Adam...Adam”, a voice drifts in,And slowly the warmth and sunshineIs replaced by smoke and catastrophe.

As my vision clears, All I can seeIs broken glass and damaged walls

Scattered around me.

For many, dreams will always be dreams,But for me,

My hope lies in my dream becoming a reality.Even though happiness doesn’t came without pain,

I know that a rainbow will never appear without any rain.

Jude

My story…is from the reality I live in

My story…talks about a person in our old street

The sadness of my story….was not in vain or by coincidence

I could not change the end…I could not bring the presence of joy

Do you know why…?

Because you cannot give what you do not have

Jude was a beautiful child with innocent eyes that held between them a flame full of hope and eagerness. He thought that he would change the world and that the entire world will be like a chess set to be moved as he likes, like he did when he played chess with his father.

He liked inventing things that were useful, made out of unwanted objects, like the olive seeds that he drilled a hole into after freezing them, making a beautiful necklace that he gifted to his mother whom he loved very much.

Salma, Jude’s mother, was not just a mother to him; she was his friend when he was in a bad place, the key to all his innocent secrets, as well as his role model. He used to see her kneeling in prayer and hear all her wishes and pleas to God and he hoped that he would be patient like her. Salma

loved Jude’s never ending curiosity and tried to satisfy it with wisdom – words she had read in a book, or with a game or advice or sometimes just with silence.

In Salma’s opinion, silence is a wise educational tool that would benefit a child in his upbringing far more than shouting.

Jude was just ten years old yet he had an enemy…yes, don’t be surprised but Jude believed that he had an enemy that stood in the way of every wish he had, whenever he wanted to invent something he saw the ghost of this enemy destroying all his hopes. Do you know who this enemy was? It was poverty!

Jude was from a very poor family. Jude saw his neighbours playing with expensive toys, his eyes glimmered but poverty made him lower his head and return home in sadness. He imagined that poverty was a man and that as soon as he was an adult he would ask Poverty, “Why did you deprive me of my right to play with other children? Why did you show no mercy towards my cries? Did your heart not move by the tears of mothers who struggle to find ways to ease the hunger of their children? Did you not feel any kind of mercy at the cold that was destroying the bones of poor people?”

When Jude turned eighteen, he decided to open his own shop to try to improve his family’s financial income. He thought of inventing every idea that popped into his head, but obviously this required a vast amount of money and, once again, poverty stands in Jude’s way. This time, however, his mother’s prayers in addition to God’s blessing played a major part. Jude’s mother had a neighbour who loved her and felt her need and pain and was always trying to help. But Jude’s mother was a proud woman who never accepted help from

This is my Dream paperback edition.indd 26 18/10/2017 15:02:09

27

others, and always pretended she was in a great state. On this occasion, the neighbour decided to join Jude as a business partner in his invention. She would provide the money and he the work, and he agreed to this and the project was soon to be completed but...suddenly Jude heard the screams of a little child on the street, it was a distant shell sending its shrapnel everywhere until it reached the foot of a child, Jude hurried as fast as could to try and save the child.

Jude had no idea that this day he started earlier with a glimmer of hope, making him feel that tomorrow will be brighter day, was to become the last day in his life. Jude was wounded in his chest - shrapnel in his small heart, which had long tolerated oppression, worries and pain.

Jude has gone to a place where there is no poverty and no fear. Jude went without telling us what he would have invented and what ideas he was going to make happen.

There are so many miseries in this world that we all suffer from, but there is someone in this world who has greater concerns and sorrows. We have to turn our pain into hope that leads us to better things. Despite everything that happened to him, Jude did not give up and remained a loving and giving person until the last moment of his life.

The Dream Heist

It all started that one day. That one day when Mr Tom didn’t tell his colleagues that the investment had failed. Mr Tom was the Tower’s building manager. The Tower was a luxury hotel in the heart of New York City. It had over a thousand workers, and one of the Tower’s customers was known as the human money maker. His name was Jason Phillip. He would take money and would invest it, the next day people would see him in a Rolls Royce surrounded by bodyguards. More bodyguards than the Queen could ever have.

Mr Tom’s job was hard and it involved multi-tasking as he represent all the departments in the Tower. He would distribute the earnings of the workers. As a busy man he would wake up at 4am and would go sleep at 1am. One day he thought to himself that he cannot go on like this, so he decided to delay the ‘payday’ for the workers and he decided to go to Mr Phillip and he chose to invest all the money. He told all the workers that they would get their salary the next week and that they would receive more money than all of their wages put together.

Mr Tom felt like he was doing a good job, acting the ‘Good Samaritan’ and even he couldn’t believe that he had taken $75000 to invest. Mr Tom and Phillip agreed to meet in the lounge of Phillips floor 2pm on Friday, two days after ‘payday’. Phillips was the first person to stay at the new floor. As well as the new floor it was also the top floor. It took 6 weeks to create.

It was raining heavily that day. Mr Tom was half an hour early sitting down on the bright red sofa. The entire room had been newly refurbished, everything in the room was brand new.

There were many items in the room such as pool tables, a ping pong table, a golf playroom. He did notice an oddly shaped object in the wall. It was as if there was a small TV in there, or a small square object. It must have been an error from when the floor was made. It didn’t bother him, he began to sigh and yawn. He closed his eyes, “Just for a moment” he said.

He opened his eyes and he felt his heart beating louder and louder. He looked at the clock directly above him, “13:55” it read. Just in time, and as he stood up the door opened. It was opened by two big bald bodyguards wearing black tuxedos. There were a lot more entering the room. Every single one looked identical and soon they started to form two lines. And when they stopped lining up, they turned and faced each other as Phillip entered. Phillip was wearing a white suit with a black bow and a pair of black shades.

Mr Tom forced himself not to smile, trying to look as professional as possible, but how could he? He is in the presence of the man who is literally holding the key to his future. He held out his hand going for hand shake even though it was shaking. Phillip shook his head and told Mr Tom to brace himself as the news can be quite shocking. Now Mr Tom let his happiness get the better of him and he smiled, but then Phillip took of his glasses and Mr Tom could see the level of seriousness in his face.

He told him the news by saying a phrase that consists of five words. “Investments are always a gamble”. From hearing this Mr Tom ran out of the room…

The investment had failed, and now Mr Tom was going to get sacked, on the account of stealing and lying to his workers. The next day he called in sick as he could not sleep.

He had nightmares, before going to bed he would make sure that the doors were locked with 8 different locks and the windows were secured tightly. The next day he saw on the news that Philip had been placed on house arrest for the suspicion of having drugs. His hearing was on Sunday.

This. Was. Perfect.

This was the perfect opportunity to strike. He felt that he had to steal all the money Phillip had ever earned from investments. As the building manager he had access to every room in the entire residence. However he wouldn’t be able to steal the money by himself, he would need help. He would need a man who works at the hotel but is rarely complimented. He would need a man for which people would know his name but forget what his job is. Mr Tom’s accomplice will be the Doorman.

The Doorman’s name is Lester. He was a young strong man at the age of 20. Mr Tom had to tell him about the investment crisis. As a doorman you earn very little so this was a good motive but he was very ambitious and enthusiastic any way. There were rumours that Phillip had $2 million in just one safe. Of course he knew where the safe was. It was in the wall, but the question was how Lester was going to get it out.

Sunday came quick and it was the day of the hearing for Phillip. Phillip left the Tower at 10:00 and Lester was standing next to the door. The press went as soon as Phillip left and now it was Lester’s moment. He opened the door using Mr

Tom’s security pass, and he spotted the dodgy wall. He had to scavenge and had to see what he could break the wall with. He looked around and was immediately mesmerised by the pool table. He started to play and as soon as he picked up the cue, Phillip entered. Lester hid behind a pillar, with his back sweating and his legs trembling. Philip had returned to get his keys as when he left Lester could hear the jingle. Lester turned around and saw a bit of sawdust on his uniform. He realized that the new walls weren’t stable and so he punched the wall with no effort yet the movement had such grace. He lifted up the safe and groaned. He put it in his rucksack and ran to rendezvous with Mr Tom.

They met at his apartment and he got a worker from the Tower. Her name was Emma. Most people in the Tower had been interviewed by Mr Tom and he remembered that Emma’s father was a famous locksmith in Australia. He explained EVERYTHING to her and said that Mr Tom, Emma and he will get a third of the share but after that everyone will part ways.

Emma opened the safe with ease and now the rumours were false. It wasn’t $2 million, it was $20 million. Now the three of them were millionaires, and they were never seen again.BUZZ. BUZZ. BUZZ.The alarm went off.“Another day of work” Mr Tom sighed as he woke up from that dream. That glorious dream. He’d call it the ‘dream heist’.

I Have a Dream

Sometimes you have a dream that you think you’ll never wake up from.

In my dream, Jews do not go on trains; they don’t have birthdays or picnics, and they’re forced to wear a yellow star wherever they go.

Except this isn’t a dream. I live in the Kinderheim, the children’s camp at Auschwitz. It looks like a giant hen house but instead of hens, it’s us. We live three to a bed with one blanket between us, and at night the bed bugs crawl across our faces like maggots over a mouldy apple. My best friend (since my parents were taken away) is a girl called Irene. She’s more like a little sister to me though, since she is nine, two years younger than me.

When we were taken from our houses, we were only allowed one suitcase and the clothes we were standing up in. Some, like Irene, tried to put two coats on but the Nazis took them away. It was hard knowing what to bring and so I took the first things I could think of: a small doll that my mother had once given me, a sketchbook and some crayons.

These things have become my world, quite literally. I use them to escape. I draw the places I would rather be, and in these drawings I imagine myself and Irene in a grassy field, lying on our backs with the sun’s golden rays warming us all over. Sometimes, if I’m feeling sad, I draw the smoking chimneys and the “Welfare for the Young” cars, but then I

remember Irene and how I must look after her and I pretend we’re somewhere like Paris on a great adventure that takes us through the city. We don’t remember our birthdays, but we once made a potato gateau from scraps that we had saved and imagined we were dining in the best restaurant.

Even though we are children we all have jobs to do. Although the work is hard and long it is better than not being able to work. Sometimes children - the ones who get ill or who are too young to work - disappear. And then we see the chimney start to smoke.

I worry about Irene, her cough is getting worse. She shakes the bed with her shivering, even though she has all the blanket and me besides. Last night, I gave her my bread but she couldn’t keep it down. As we lie in bed, she says that she is afraid of the chimneys but I tell her it’s warm there and that her mum might even be waiting. I tell her I love her. Everybody should have a dream.

My Living Dream

I saw it in just a little glimpse,One tiny fleck of light. My life and world darkened,It tinted up my night,

A bittersweet thought,Enticing my frozen heart,My feelings are whirling,

Thoughts of what could have,Or could not,Still rolling and rolling,

Murmurs of the long lost,Are edging me in,Wires of remembrances,Grabbing my cold icy skin,

Desires so difficult to forget,Closing my eyes to live,Just wanting to sleep,Since in my visions I am still awake.

It’s hard to say from where it came,But I will only repeatThey’re just the equal,As occurs in my slumber.

Freedom

The scorching sun beat down on her bare back and her blistered, bleeding feet trailed along the sandy ground as exhaustion took over. The soft rumble of a distant car drew gradually closer and a siren began to whirr. Amira recognised that sound. The last time she had heard that sound was the day they took her father away. In a state of panic Amira began to run, the excruciating pain in her feet her last thought. Suddenly Amira’s foot caught on a boulder and she tripped falling into a ditch, and in this ditch she vowed to never go back to the village.

1 month earlier

It was a summer morning and a warm breeze was swept around the hut, the sun’s rays warm upon her glowing face. “This day would be a good day,” she thought, throwing off her bedclothes and hopping out of bed. She went over to her mother who was cooking her favourite meal, Kibbeh, she was singing. Her mother had a beautiful voice, the best in all of Syria, her father always boasted. Her father was sitting at the table reading the newspaper. A loud knock on the door took Amira by surprise. They knocked again, a loud, booming knock that echoed around the entire hut. Her mother went to answered the door and after a few hurried whispers she shouted “Majid, it’s for you,” she ran back in her face suddenly pale and frightened.

Her father went to the door a curious look on his face. At first they spoke quietly as to not scare Amira, but after a while the

shouting began. Amira huddled in a corner and covered her ears but could not block out the anger. After what seemed like hours the shouting ceased.

“Mama,” she whispered, “Mama, where have the nasty men gone, where’s Papa?” Her mother began to cry.

“Mama what’s happened, please tell me.”Her mother whispered “They took him too,” Amira didn’t cry, she didn’t even speak. She only said, “My dream is to be free. Now they have taken Papa, I am even more desperate to get out of Syria.”Her mother just smiled, a small, sad smile.

Over the next few days the men came a few more times in a van with barred windows. They even searched the house. When Amira questioned her mother about this, she said her father had been arrested for transportation of food abroad. The searches went on for about a week until her mother fell ill. Her condition gradually worsened until she couldn’t live another day. Amira was holding her hand. Her eyes were shut and she was in so much pain she could hardly breathe. All of a sudden her mother opened her eyes.“Mama,” she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes, “don’t leave me.”“Be free,” she whispered. And those were her last words. The next day Amira began to walk, away from her life in Syria, towards her unknown future.

Only in My Homeland

Only in my homeland the sky cries…and a child sleeps with a dream to stay.

Saffron wakes up to wailing and prayer ….as love travels and departs to memories of the past.

And woes travels into the mother’s embrace, in the eyes of our children we see fire

And their lips breath blood, and the sun rises with the hope of salvation

And sets on tears and pleas. And History carves itself with lines written in blood…

What journey is time taking us on? And to what catastrophe and hardship?

Oh my eyes don’t sting with your tears, while the sky and land both cry

My country; a burning that resides in my heart until judgement day and to my demise

At dusk the worries are shunned to one side, the tears are withheld …and memories are opened

And words come pouring out from an archive of longing that has lasted too long, a separation that has lasted for long too, a wound that has vanished and a love that is lost….

Only in my homeland do the mouths of our children call and scream “It is my right to be educated; it is my right to live in peace; it is my right to many many things

It is my right to live lovingly with my books and pencils so that each letter I write turns into a poem and with every butterfly wing I draw there is a love story… and I draw a sun to shine a light on our hearts and I add a star with a glow, a glimmer of hope in our souls”

And this is how this child wakes up in the morning.

Aleppo’s Tears

The scorching heat of the evening sun blazed upon the inhabitants of broken, run-down Aleppo. Shattered glass and litter decorated the crumbling roads as families scurried around in a hurry searching for missing relatives. The heart-wrenching cries of lost children echoed throughout the land as they hysterically sobbed whilst screaming out for the gentle touch and reassurance only a parent could provide.

Once upon a time, Aleppo had been a beautiful, dazzling sight for all to admire but what once was a place of happiness and freedom was now home to the heartless and merciless creature of war. Damaged dreams and unanswered prayers lurked in all corners and fear-inspiring laws were thrust upon all. Sinister shadows of the night would come out as the middle-eastern sun would set and selfishly play with the citizens’ dreams like an evil puppet master.

Stray children aimlessly wandered the treacherous roads and searched for their beloved mothers and fathers that the war had so viciously ripped away from them. Innocent tears would wet their cheeks and unforgettable trauma filled their minds. Tears of having grazed your knee on a warm, summer’s day should have been the ones to wet their cheeks and thoughts of ice-cream and riding a bike should have filled their minds instead. But, the children of Syria were not granted that choice, their lives were held together like a dangerously loose fabric only held by the seams and their rights had been thrown away like yesterday’s trash.

Clouds of dust and filthy rubble were scattered everywhere and collapsed buildings lay like defeated Kings on the streets. Fathers holding their children comfortingly close to their chests ran to seek refuge and shelter from the angry army trucks filled to the brim with expensive weapons and supplies to help bring this country and its people down.

Hidden within the crowds of distressed citizens, stood two abandoned children: a boy, Hasan, not much older than 11, and his younger 7-year-old sister, Hayat. All they had left of family was each other, and ever since the dreadful day that their parents had died in front of a ticking grenade, Hasan vowed to protect his sister from any harm.

However, Hasan himself was still a child and whilst he was taking care of Hayat, who was taking care of him? His rights were left unguarded and undefended but his lists of responsibilities were towering high. Thoughts of pessimism and negativity barraged into his brain and were hammered into his thoughts. Tears began to stream down his mud stained cheeks, as he pondered how he would attend Hayat’s needs and ensure she was well looked after. Unlike any other 11-year-old boy, Hasan had no education or knowledge on how to take care of his sister and was frightened of the future they would be cursed to bear without the presence of a nurturer.

There was nobody for Hasan to look up to for encouragement and no shoulder for him to cry on, not wanting Hayat to witness him in a weak state, he brushed aside his worries and took the cold, chapped hands of his sister.

“Khata, Hasan? What’s wrong?”

44

“La shayy, Ia taqlaq, nothing, don’t worry” Hasan comforted her,

“Hasan, ana khayif, I’m scared” Hayat mumbled, the break in her voice signalling she was soon going to cry was evident.

“Ana aydana, Hayat, walakun sanakun ealaa ma yaram, me too, but we’ll be fine” he said convincingly, whether he was convincing Hayat or himself was unclear, but nevertheless, it made Hayat feel better.

Nodding, half-heartedly, she rubbed her fatigue-filled eyes and began to sleepily suck on her thumb, a habit she was yet to grow out of.

Hasan raised Hayat and brought her chin to rest on his shoulder, stroking her hair, he whispered consoling words into her ear, “adhhab ‘iilaa alnnum, Hayat, sanakun aminat fi alssabah. Go to sleep, Hayat, we’ll be safe in the morning.”

With the rough, rocky ground digging into his sore bare feet, Hasan allowed unlikely dreams of a better, safer, life cloaked in euphoria and bliss to cloud his better judgement and for that short moment, believed peace in Syria could be restored and God would protect them all.

Impossible Dreams

I can’t read but I can be a teacher.

I want to see children work together like the world should do.

I hope to be someone’s inspiration.

I dream to stand in front of my own class.

I imagine that children would laugh at my ridiculous jokes.

I aim to make my lessons fun.

I desire to make someone’s day.

I strive to make educational games.

I work to have fun.

I overcome the things I don’t know.

I show that I am confident.

I always will smile.

A Child’s Rights

One very cold day I was passing a street when I saw a young child wiping cars. I asked him his age and name and he replied “My name is A’amr and I am nine years old. I lost both my parents when I was only a few months old“. When I asked him if he went to school he told me “No, my uncle has forbidden me from studying”. I asked him if he liked school and he replied “Yes, but I can’t study. I want to work to gain money so I can help my uncle in raising my younger siblings.”

“No, A’amr, the world is not just about money; it is much more than that. In fact it is the opposite of what he has told you. Education is a beneficial thing in this life, because we must strive and try hard to follow a path that will guide us to a better life. Education is one of life’s treasures and I want you to study so that you become an important member of society, what do you think?”

“No, I want to work to earn money for my siblings” answered A’amr. I realised he was not convinced, so I said “Why are you not convinced that there are many people who worked hard and contributed in developing and improving society? Don’t you want to be one of them? Education is a source of light and ignorance is darkness. Do you want to be alone in total darkness while other people and the entire world around you progress and move forward and develop themselves?” He replied “No, but what am I supposed to do with my uncle?”

I said “Don’t worry. I will go and talk with your uncle and convince him to enrol you at school”. A’amr was full of joy as

we went to convince his uncle.

The uncle said, “What about me? I am the one who has to provide all their needs. Who will help me? You know how expensive life can be and I can’t ensure that they are all provided for. If A’amr goes to school, who will provide for him?” I assured him that he should not worry “Don’t trouble yourself. I will take care of everything concerning A’amr -- all I want from you is your approval. And sure enough, he agreed.

I took A’amr shopping for school equipment, and from the next day he started going to school and began studying with all his might to achieve his one aim; to become a lawyer.

And so the days passed and A’amr was still studying and progressing. He was gaining exceptional grades. As the years passed he began to realise that knowledge is beautiful and beneficial. He grew up and he grew in the eyes of people and society. Today he is one of the leading lawyers in society and one of the richest - he now helps children who were not able to attend school due to hardship by sending them to gain an education and achieve their dreams, just like he did.

The Assignment That Changed Everything

I smoothed out the creases in my school dress. Finally, after all these years, girls could go to school. That made me smile.

“Emma! Breakfast!” Mum called.I ran down to kitchen, grabbing my schoolbag.“Why aren’t you ready for school?” I asked my sister, chewing my pancake furiously.“It’s too late, I’m 15.” Lana said.“Oh.” I replied.

“What is that letter?” Mr Johnson asked.“Oh. I know how to read and write; can’t I do what the boys are doing? Sir?” I asked tired of learning things I knew.“You’re a girl, all you need to know is how to read, write, cook and clean.” Answered Mr Johnson, in a matter-of-fact way.“Read, write, cook and clean!” I repeated, standing up, “That’s stupid! When it was announced that girls could go school I thought it meant all girls would get a good education and be equal to the boys!”“How dare you talk back to a teacher! And how could you be so foolish to have thought that all girls would get an education like the boys! HEADTEACHER’S OFFICE NOW!” shouted Mr Johnson.“Gladly” I muttered as I went.

Shout it from the rooftops, write it on the skyline. I stopped singing. I could hear someone shouting. I stood up from the chair next to the head teacher’s office and went to the door. I looked through the keyhole into the head teacher’s office. Mrs

Smith, the dinner lady, and the head teacher, Mr Coombes. They were clearly having a row.

“He does half the work I do and he’s paid three times more than me!” cried Mrs Smith, a hint of desperation in her voice.“Well you’re supposed to cook and clean, he isn’t supposed do a woman’s job!” shouted Mr Coombes, his face red.“You’re a foolish and arrogant man!” yelled Mrs Smith.“Those are big words for you to say, dishwasher!” snarled Mr Coombes.I sat down quickly as Mrs Smith left. There was more gender inequality in this school than I had thought.“You all have an assignment today,” said Mr Johnson, eyeing me, “You have to write an essay on the theme ‘my dream’. Boys, I want at least 750 words from you and girls, since many of you have just learnt to write, I want a small paragraph.”

Well it was reasonable that he wanted the girls to write a small paragraph, many had just learnt to write. Aunt Jackie teaches me, Lana and mum how to read and write when she visits. I was the brightest girl in the class. Aunt lived in Mildew, where they all learnt in small village schools. My dream is to become a singer for girls to be equal to boys.

“You’ve all done very well,” Mr Johnson said, as he handed them out.I grinned, eager to get my results. Our first assignment! I looked around at the other girls’ results. Most got As and Bs and some had written more than the boys! Ours were marked related to how long we’ve been in school (which wasn’t very long). Mr Johnson handed me my assignment. There in the corner in red ink was a big, fat F.

“I got a F on my assignment!” I cried, when I got home.

“Let me see,” said Lana, taking my assignment.“Wow, that’s good,” said Lana, handing it to me.“If it’s good, why I did get a F?” I asked, sarcastically.“Cause’ you’re speaking out, dimwit. They don’t like people who speak out.” Lana replied.“So, I should keep quiet to get good grades,” I said.“No, you continue to speak out and get yourself heard. I think I got a plan for just that.” answered Lana.

“Next in Matternbury School’s 50th anniversary talent show: Emma Platten! She will be singing a special song!” announced Mr Coombes.

“My dream is for girls to be equal to boys. There are many examples of gender inequality in this school such as girls can only go to school until they are 14 however boys go until they are 16. Additionally, girls only get to learn how to read and write and men are paid more than the women!” I shouted into the microphone. I continued, more confident. When finished, everyone clapped. I felt the tear fall down mum’s cheek.

“If you agree raise your hands,” I said.Everyone did. Including Mr Johnson.‘We all agree changes need to be made and they will!” bellowed Mr Coombes, “We will have gender equality in this school!”.My assignment changed everything and more than that I had changed everything. But this was just the first step.

A Sad Ending

I was walking all alone,On a road of rocks and stone,Never did I know where it would lead,Sometimes I wondered “was it because of my deeds?”

Then came along a sweet little breeze,Seemed to me, my whole world would freeze,For a little while I thought,That the road I chose was the best one I got.

The breeze took away all my pain,As if a barren land after years had rain,This seemed to lead me to a meadow,Where in the sun, only gave me a shadow.

The feeling was great,But it came at some rate,I felt like being on top of the world,“Come down to mother Earth” somebody called.

It was a beautiful dream,Then came a storm,That shattered my dreams,It crushed all my norms,

I awake from a sleep,To see a black sheep,I moved my head to realise,I was dead,Laying in bed.

Abandoned

There is no escape. There is no help. Surrounded voices shriek with fear. Their faces ashen and are filled with pain. An immense bomb explodes furiously, as the air turns black all around swallowing the sun, and I stood petrified, my eyes bright red with salty crystal tears rolling down my scarred cheek.

A shrill cry echoed in the mist while I fell down to my knees hopelessly. Where am I?

I woke up in a dusky room as footsteps slowly creaked in the distance and the door pulled free letting the dark figure in. I was told that I was at an orphanage shelter and someone was here to adopt me. I couldn’t help plastering a smile across my face.

The tall man led me to an outsized room, there was a woman sitting on a dark brown ancient looking chair. She had long silky hazel hair and ocean blue eyes, her lips pink that covered her white glimmering teeth. On her lap sat a little girl with braids that weaved through her brown hair and ended with cherry red bows. I was told by the man who had skin of a lizard and wrinkles that looked like crumpled paper to sit down opposite the woman. Nervously I took little steps to the wooden chair that was waiting for me.

The room was pin drop silent except for from the baby cooing whilst shaking her rattle. My senses were alert; all eyes were focused on me. My mouth stayed shut even though I knew

what I wanted to say; I didn’t want to risk the chance of her taking me in. Suddenly very soft words came out of the lady’s mouth. She called me by my name: “Aaliyah”.

As I heard my name tears began to brim in my eyes drowning my eyelashes. The woman reached out to my hand and said “You are welcome to my family.”

My face lit up with pride and my emotions reached to a level that I have not experienced in a long time. My wish that I have been longing for (to have a family) has finally come true. I stepped into pure daylight as she guided me to her home.

While I sauntered through the house the fluffy carpet bristled through my toes as my eyes fixed on the vibrant purple curtains that hung on the silver railing. I stopped at a room with pastel pink painted walls and a duvet that was covered in pink flowers. As day came to an end she tucked me into bed drawing the blanket over me. Our eyes met and she came closer, a whisper crept into my ear saying “Everything is going to be just fine.”

I felt like I was being born again.

Hope

Hello, my name is Faiza. I am 13 years old and from Syria in the middle of a war. I am alone, my parents dead, my home gone. No one notices me, no one sees me but I am there. I hide in the rubble of buildings, covered with shadows. In the small, hidden corner sleep and do the one thing that comforts me: I dream.

I often dream of my mum, with her black curly hair and hazel eyes. I have the same eyes as her but with straight jet black hair. I don’t remember my father well; just that he had died when I was six.

That was 3 years before the war started. I remember reading a book when I heard the sound of a bomb exploding. Then another one and another until all I heard was a deep rumble. The ground was shaking. My mum ran into the room with a look of panic in her eyes. She told me to gather my possessions and wear all my warm clothes. I dream of me stuffing all my clothes, blankets and some food into my rucksack. I brought my book along to remind me of home.

My mum came back with a giant rucksack and we ran out of the house. We ran out of our house just in time when a bomb exploded. I wake up to the image of my ruined home and shudder.

My stomach growls of hunger but there is no food. I recall the time when me and my mum ran out of food a week after the destruction of our house. We had to scavenge around the

derelict blocks and try not to steal until we were desperate. There were a few survivors and like us their homes had been demolished. Often there were fights for food so we tried to conceal ourselves as much as possible. There were still some bombs being detonated so we had to relocate every few days.

I was always scared of what would happen. I didn’t know what was happening and however hard my mum said it would get better I knew it wouldn’t. I saw the terror in her eyes and she didn’t seem to know what was happening either. At night she would make me crawl into the remains of a building wrapped up in a now dirty blanket while she went out to find some food and water. I would curl up in the corner and fear for her and my lives trying to go to sleep. She sometimes came with a small portion or sometimes nothing at all. I think of the night she put her blanket on me when she was about to go out. She wrapped her arms around me and said to me “Remember to follow your hopes and dreams,” and she went out. I sat in confusion at her sudden embrace. A deafening rumble shook the ground. I got up and ran “Mum!” I cried and the explosion hurled me back. That was the last time I saw my mum.

I shiver with the thought. Last night I hadn’t managed to find any food or water. Since my mum died

I have had to survive on my own. I had to relocate every 3 days and find my own food. The day she died I vowed that I would follow my hope and dream; to get out of Syria to a safe place and live a happy life. I know it won’t be easy but nothing in my life is easy anymore. I have eavesdropped on the other survivors and found out that there is a ship for refugees to the UK, on the other side of the city. This is my way out. I have reached the border of the city by relocating closer each time.

I wear all my clothes and pack the now tattered book in my rucksack. It now is the only reminder of my old life. I trudge to the direction of the gate where the harbour will be. After 4 days I have finally reached it and found some food and water. I hear the commotion of a fight and hide against a wall.

Bodies lay scattered everywhere and the last two men fall. I run through them seeing the harbour ahead. A bloody hand grasps my leg. I scream and kick the hand. I enter the harbour and run up to a ship full of refugees. I am free.

Seal of the Promise

The white mountains soared high into the sky, its rocky hillside edging with loose gravel.

Walking alongside me on the dusty path was Ham, my brother and the chief of our village. We had almost identical faces and similar builds, only natural as we were twins.

“These last few years have been rough, the famine and the plague. Our village is on the verge of ruins.” Hearing Haru’s pained voice made me wince at the harsh truth. Our village was tucked away in the mountains and received little rain and crops.

However, this didn’t stop us from attempting to save our small town. As chief, Haru worked hard to save our plummeting home from disaster. My respect for my brother was huge, Haru certainly was a hero of many sorts.

While walking on the narrow path, I noticed a thin plume of smoke snake upwards into the sky. Quickly walking ahead, we could soon see its source. A roadside village was being razed.

Haru turned to face me, “we need to help.” I looked at him in surprise. I was about to protest but was cut off by the urgency of his voice. “Have you forgotten? ‘The one who leads the village must always act in the name of justice’.”

At times like this, Haru seemed too generous to be a village

chief. That phrase he always quoted was always an example.

Before I could speak up, Haru made a beeline for the blazing village. Looking at him in shock, I ran after him in a haste. Finally reaching the settlement, I strained my eyes to find Haru. The fire had left most of the village in smouldering ruins. Spotting someone in the distance, I dashed forward. It was certainly my brother, he seemed to be entering a warehouse. I quickly shouted out in a panic, “come back!”

Turning around, Haru shook his head. “There’s someone inside!” With those words, he disappeared inside. A large flame had danced its way to the same flaming warehouse. My surroundings were engulfed by a sea of fire. The warehouse, still in flames, came crashing down furiously. My screams were drowned out by the rise of collapsing rubble, a cold sweat trickled down my back.

No longer caring for my safety, I recklessly ran through the sparks of fire for the storehouse ruins. Finally locating the fallen building, I prepared myself to jump in. But I was stopped by a weak voice.

Darting my eyes forward, there was Haru. A large pillar lay on his legs, trapping him from escaping. “Don’t bother, this beam won’t move. It’s only a matter of time before the fire will swallow this warehouse too.”

I shook my head violently, “that doesn’t matter! As long as you’re still alive!”Haru could only smile weakly until a serious look took over his face. “I ask two things. First, make sure you get to safety. Second, restore our village.” I could only stare at him, completely transfixed by his words.

“The future of this village. And our own. Both I leave to you.” A blur of water coaxed my eyes, causing me to rub at them furiously.

Haru smiled affectionately at me, I leave these tasks to you. So there will be no more sorrow. No more for anyone...”And with those final words, a column of fire erased Haru from my sight. Where once stood a warehouse, now remained only roaring flames.

It was at that moment, that I knew. Knew that I had lost the most important person in my life. Haru, he was always too kind. Always trying to save everyone and having to pay theprice. I couldn’t save him, all I could do was watch him uselessly. My sorrow was replaced by regret, and it was then that I remembered what Haru would always say.

“The one who leads the village must always act in the name of justice.”

I had to do something, I couldn’t just stay here. But what would Haru do?Everything was awash in red, and it was then that I made my decision. There’s only one thing I can do. I must restore our village, and bring peace among these lands. It wasn’t just my responsibility, but my desire to follow out my brother’s wishes.I promise you Haru. I shall restore our village and bring back the peace we once had. Just how you wished.

I Love You, Oh Night

In a large city there was a child who was afraid of the dark. Once the Night appeared wearing its big black cloth and spreading across the tops of trees, forests, and fields, the cowardly child would run away as quickly as he could. He would go home and sleep and have a nightmare about a scary black ghost that would snatch him and run into a large dark valley where he would leave him.

The Night felt sorry for the child and became sad, so it sent the child a black toy in the form of a girl with a red ribbon tied into her hair, and a nice smile on her face and very white teeth. The child’s eyes rejoiced when he looked at the beautiful black doll. He started talking to it and it talked back, and they went on chatting. He told her about his sadness and how he happy he felt with her. The boy asked, smiling, “Where did you come from, my friend?”

The doll told him, “My father sent me to you.” The child replied, still smiling, ”Who is your father?” The doll said, “My father makes beautiful black dolls, and sends them to the countries that have children, and those black toys are all my siblings.” The child said, “I love your father because he gave me a doll.”

The doll said, “My father does not only gift black dolls. He has another job. He extends his black cloth to all the countries and when it is dawn some workers go to work, and soldiers sit on the border and he tells school students the right time to go to school. He makes cars and people’s voices quieten and

calm down, and people go home. When my father makes his black cloth and gently sweeps people’s faces with his magic brushes, they sleep after the day’s tiredness. And as time progresses my father opens his beautiful black tent in the sky. The moon looks at the window of the tent and shines its beautiful and brilliant silver light. It is a simple light, which resembles the features of children who dream, and the rays of the moon and stars fly like white pigeons on the tops of trees and the roofs of houses and gardens.”

“Shortly before dawn, my father collects the beautiful black dolls tied with red ribbons, leaving the children asleep, hiding the toys, the moon and the stars in his big black cloth. He tells the people who worked and guarded at night that he is gone. But his absence does not last long. After twelve hours he returns with toys, the moon and beautiful stars.” The child listened to what this beautiful black doll said to him and smiled and said to her “If the Night is your father, then we shall go to him.” She replied “You can never go to him. When my father appears the children are asleep, and when they wake up, my father leaves with his toys and the moon and stars. After dawn children go to schools and farmers and labourers to work. You can never visit my father.”

The child loved her a lot and said to her “Thank you, my doll friend”. She replied “Well my father sent me to you to stop you fearing the night. My father knew that you are afraid of the night but the night is not afraid of anyone.” The child said, “I know he is not afraid of anyone, but I was afraid of him.” The doll replied, “I know that he is not afraid, but he loves children a lot, because a world without children is like a tree that does not bear fruit.”

We are Equal

Children’s rights can’t go away,It must have a reason and a say,Some children feel like a shooting dart,Hitting them straight to the heart,You should know you have to stop,Let go of your weapons let them drop,Where’s my playfulness gone?don’t tell me it’s all done,You bombed the city more than once,And know it’s nearly the end of one,You haven’t learnt your lesson, from the African hero Nelson,The age is just a number,It doesn’t mean you’re stronger,My dreams run into thick air,I was only hoping the world was fair,My goal was to get an education,Then work in a hospital near the station,I can’t take this anymore,Wishing I could run out the door,I will never forget you my Daddy,You were really lovely my Mummy,I feel like the world is against me, there’s no helping hand,So troubled and lonely, I feel like quicksand,I have to be brave and save what’s left of the world,Nothing will stop me from giving my word,I will finish what heroes accomplished,I will never let the poor wash a dish,Let’s start a fresh page of life,And never remember that bloody knife!

I Am

I am the scared school, shivering with terror. Don’t know when a bomb is gonna fall from the sky. The children are frightened, they don’t wanna die. The school is scared, what’s going to happen? No in the school I’m gonna be crushed no one going to be with me, why do there have to be boring bombs? You surely believe that there shouldn’t be bombing.

I am the playground I don’t like bombs because if it hit the children they’re gonna die then no one is going to play on me, jump on me, do skipping play football I hate bombs why do they even exist? they hurt our country what if we done that to them?

I am a home I don’t like hideous bombs they freak me out. I’m not that strong if people die then no one can live in me I’m gonna be hurt they’re gonna be injured why do bomb come here they’re really rude i’m sad now.

I am the ground the unappealing bombs hit me so hard I have a heart attack. When people die they can’t walk on me i feel so lonely and sad i wish there was no bombing around. they don’t know we’re getting hurt they don’t know how it hurts they’re so mean.

I am a Syrian kid, my dream is to go back to my home country. My hope is that there won’t be any bombing. I really miss my home, I loved it there, I want my normal life back, I love Syria, I want to go back. Please someone take me, please.

Zen and the Mountain

It started in Japan, the terrible incident of Nagasaki. Everyone screaming. Loud noises of the bombs, whoever remembers to be in the incident, they will be scarred for life and paranoid of their surroundings. A young boy by the name of Zen Hong lost his family in the disaster.

He is now in an orphanage and it has no money. It was lonely and they didn’t have proper beds, they had no food. You can only get food if you work hard. It was cruel. They are meant to help broken kids with no family, not tear them apart. Most of the kids would rather be in jail than spend one more night in that cruel place.

One night, Zen could not take it and ran away. Miles and miles that poor boy had to walk. On the horizon he saw a mountain, he thought it was a good idea to climb up that mountain that he saw in the distance, so he did. I couldn’t blame him because he just wanted to get away from everything.

He climbed up that mountain, dying of hunger and thirst. It was dreadful for him. He was climbing and climbing but suddenly he heard a ‘woof ’. It was a dog. Zen was not afraid so he picked up the dog and carried on with his journey.

The reason why he picked up the dog was because he couldn’t leave it to die and it was his only friend. Finally he reached the top of the mountain. There was a letter there for Zen from his family, and it said, Zen, I know it’s hard and we love you. Zen broke down in tears. No one ever heard of Zen again.

A Fish Adventure

They say that a big fish and her daughter were playing together in a quiet blue sea when they spotted three sea ships in the distance. The big fish said “They are humans going on a trip to explore. The daughter then replied “How I wish to go on a similar journey!”

The big mother fish: you are still far too young to face the dangers that lurk in such a journey.

The Crab heard the conversation and asked the little fish “what is bothering you?”

The little fish: I really want to go on a journey of discovery but mum says I am still young and I must wait until I am a bit older and bigger.

A seagull then joined in the conversation as well and said: “Your mum is right to fear for you getting lost.

Without anyone’s knowledge or their attention, the little fish swam out of the gulf in an unknown direction. She then spotted one of the sea ships and swam quickly to reach it but her ability to do that was far less than she had actually thought. She screamed with all her might “Wait for me, ship!” but none of the sea captains could hear her.

The little fish felt tired and disappointed so she decided to return ‘home’ to her land but she was scared as she did not know how to find her way back to her friends and family. As

she nervously swam she suddenly bumped into an octopus, so she asked him “Do you know the way to my house?” But the octopus just carried on in his way and ignored the question. So she hurried to the sleeping oyster and asked her “I lost my way home, please can you help me” but the oyster didn’t know the way home either.

The little fish then pleaded with the jellyfish which proved pointless and so she started crying as she questioned herself, “What will I do now? Mum and my friends were right when they said that I was too young to go on such a journey.” Suddenly she noticed how the surrounding fish were swimming at an incredible speed, but before she had the chance to ask them why they are swimming at such a speed, a large shadow fell upon her and soon enough she realised that a shark was coming her way and that the reason the fish were running away at a fast speed was triggered by the fear of being eaten by the shark.

The shark tried to catch the little fish and swallow her but she was able to hide between the tiny rocks, that were far impenetrable for the large creature. When the little fish felt that the danger had passed, she went out from between the rocks and without even turning around she found herself back home…in her land. In reality she did not know how she arrived here again but what she did know was that she wasn’t going to go on such a journey again until she had grown up a bit more.

What is My Identity?

There are so many races and so many faces,Am I any different from what you want me to be?

I may not be what you want to see,But I’m here,

Every religion, culture and race,Isn’t always the case.

So what if I’m different,I’m only innocent,

And not the criminal you make me out to be.Because I’m talking about my dignity, and individuality,

So do you think I am a liability?

This isn’t what I want,I want to communicate,

And appreciate,The things that I have,

It doesn’t matter if I have a scarf,Or a hijab,

Because it doesn’t make me a terrorist sab,I am what I am,

But I’m not what you think I am.I have an identity,

And it’s reality,So it’s not invisibility,

Because I know that I am somebody,Even if you don’t see me.

A Conversation

One day on my way back from school I heard a conversation taking place between an apple and spinach at the grocery shop near our home.

The apple in a sad tone asked the spinach “Why do people prefer you to me? Is it because you are more beautiful? Is your taste more delicious? Are there more benefits in you than me?”

The spinach laughed and replied “No, my friend - you are the one with more benefits and you are more popular with children and the little ones love you. People who are ill need you. But you are rarely found and you are too expensive for the majority of people to afford you”.

Apple: “How is that possible when I am here and available in large quantities. This land is my land”.

Spinach: “Yes, my dear, but due to the war and sanctions they have forbidden the entry of fruits and all types of nutritional foods that every human needs and which are hard to live without.”

Apple: “Then why are you allowed to enter even though there are many nutritional benefits to you and you are full of iron?”

Spinach : “Thank you so much my dear but I am planted between the fields and grow quickly whereas you grow on a tree and trees are a bit far from town.”

Apple: “I understand, but I am very sad because there are not many of me here and the children come and look at me because they want to taste my sweet flavour and I would love to be their food.”

Just then, the banana woke up from her deep sleep and said “Don’t be sad, my apple friend. We are in the same situation. Tiredness and black bits have filled my body. Families should not allow us to enter because children see us and long for our taste and we wither and rot away sitting at the grocer’s shop because people are unable to buy us.”

Spinach: “You are right but maybe there are people who are in need of you, like the sick or elderly or even a child who has lost his/her mother and who is no longer able to be breastfed.”

Banana: “God bless you, and thank God you are here. I wish the sanctions could be lifted off this country and that every type of food, fruits and vegetables return to the people.”

Apple: “Oh how sad I was because no one asked about me, but now I feel exceptional to my other fruit friends and I wish that all my siblings and cousins become edible food for the children. I don’t like to deprive anyone.”

I looked at the apple and smiled then I said to her “You are one of the most loved fruits to me, I promise you that when the sanction ends I shall be sure to eat you daily with your sister the red apple. And you, banana, I won’t forget you! I will add you to my milk and make a delicious cocktail.” I ran with joy to my house and wrote this in my diary, because my notebook is my closest friend who holds all my thoughts and secrets.

The Boy

“Your son has made a lot of progress through these tests but he has shown intermittent nightmares of these so called ‘characters’, all of them but one, for which is involved in every nightmare. This activity is rare for a boy of his age, I recommend that he is seen to frequently for therapy and is taking his medication.”

Yours sincerely,

Dr Mitchell O’Conner

Dear Diary, November 7th 1987

The talking boy visited me today. Darius said I was stupid because he can’t see the talking boy, so I hit him. Mummy didn’t like that I hit him and I got in trouble for it. The grown-ups don’t know that the talking boy is my friend, Mummy was talking to somebody and said that I started to assult people, whatever that means. She said that I wasn’t allowed to speak to the talking boy anymore. I hate her.

Dear Diary, December 24th 1987

The talking boy came back today and said that he had a surprise for me on Christmas. I can’t wait to know what it is.

Dear Diary, December 25th 1987

The talking boy came and took me to a place that was so fun to play in, with everything I ever wanted like unicorns and gumdrops. I saw something there though, my skool friends Maxie and Kevin, there with a grown-up man. They went into a dark place and I heard laughing; they were having fun. I like the talking boy, he is my friend.

Dear diary,

Yesterday Maxie and Kevin didn’t come to skool, I don’t know why.

“So tell me Anthony, what does this ‘talking boy’ look like?”

“I can’t tell you otherwise he will be angry with me.”

“Don’t worry Anthony, he isn’t going to know.”

“But he is here…”

“No Anthony.”

“HE IS HERE!”

To Mrs Williams,

Your son seems to have short bursts of aggression concerning anything against this talking boy. This may explain the assault of Darius Mitchell and the increased anger towards his teachers. Anthony has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and dopamine intakes should be taken every day.

Dear Diary, August 11th 1988

Darius and his friends keep on bullying me, saying I am a psycho and deserve to be in a loony bin. I just want to be normal, it is my dream to have people as friends, and feel normal, to eat normally, and not have these pills after every meal. That is my goal in life. The talking boy has left me and now I’m alone and I will get what I want.

Dear Diary, November 17th 1988

Yesterday the tall man stopped me from getting what I want in my sleep. He stopped me and scared me with Maxie and Kevin. They didn’t want to be my friends anymore. They were saying “Why didn’t you save us, Anthony, why?” but I don’t know what they are talking about. They were never in school since they played with the tall man in the dark place. I think I know why.

Dear Diary, February 13th 1991

I haven’t slept for a very long time, I don’t think my dream will be accomplished because of my nightmares. It is my fault that Maxie and Kevin are dead. ALL MY FAULT! IT’S MY FAULT! IT’S MY FAULT! IT’S MY FAULT!

“Anthony, what happened on the day that they went missing?”

“IT’S MY FAULT, IT’S MY FAULT!”

“What is your fault?”

“THE TALL MAN TOOK THEM AWAY, IT’S MY FAULT!”

Anthony was standing on the hill, looking down to where he and Kevin used to play armies, his over-imagination fuelling the fun. He used to be such good friends with Kevin, they lived cheek by jowl, never apart and Maxie was the person who taught him to tie his shoelaces, like a big sister. At the edge of the Greenland, there was a cliff, a majestic, almost angelic shine of light coming from it. Anthony heard something come from it, it was Kevin’s voice.

“Join us Anthony, we forgive you.”

Anthony started running, then into a sprint, and he jumped off the cliff.

Mrs Williams,

Anthony’s suicide was a tragedy and I am very sorry to hear that this has happened. We have found out the reason why this has happened. Due to the incorrect medications Dr O’Conner had given your son, his schizophrenia was not being treated correctly, also he witnessed the murder of Maxie Philips and Kevin Owens which he blamed

himself for. The man concerned haunted his nightmares for months. He called the man the tall man and the talking boy seems to be the product of overuse of dopamine, creating a dangerous figment of imagination.

My Dream

“Some people say it’s very cool,For girls to want to play football.

When I play football it makes me feel free,But some people seem to disagree.People say you have to be strong and rough,Girls being physical, that must be tough.

Everyone thinks that girls have to be clean and pretty,And that they can’t get muddy, what a pity. But what they say is a complete lie,It’s not up to them what I decide!

When we come to play football,I hear many ‘boo’s,Sometimes we hear laughter and people saying,“Girls shouldn’t be wearing those shoes”.

I always practice and practice my football skills,And I will not stop even when my leg kills.I don’t care what ignorant people say,Because I am determined to continue to play and play.

Come on girls don’t give up,We need to fight for that cup,Remember that we are strong and tough,If need be, we can play rough!

The Dreamgiver

The city shut its eyes, as the night breeze took on the sound of howling wolves. When wisps of clouds silently drifted above the town, leaving no prints behind. High above the puffy clouds the moon shimmered, as if it swam through the deep blue sea. As stones and cobbles clattered down the street like a noisy clock, tick-tock, tick-tock. Cars drove past, showing only two silver lights, as crickets sang a distant lullaby.

Over the sound of snoring, a flutter of wings was heard. A light spark of fire twinkled, as midnight struck. A smell of deodorant floated through the room. When a tiny figure drifted the open space, with a slight shadow against the concrete wall.

It flew towards the shutters with a knobbly bald head, as it was holding a bright fiery lamp in its arms. The thin, fleshless creature sat next to the dormitory window – the orphanage – with its skin as slippery as polished leather. The mystical, magical creature – that looked like a fairy – glowed like a flickering spark in the dark.

Gazing stealthily, the Dreamgiver swooped down at the beds in the dormitory and held out a light, sparkling, bag full of mystical golden eggs. Gently, he sat down and started to crack inside of the magical egg, as an illuminated liquid poured out of it and shone beautifully like the sun’s rays and onto a lucky girl’s rusty ballet shoes. Then, one boy dreamt of being an astronaut, and then a little astronaut flew around the room, as in bed he gave a small, soft and happy sigh.

Out of the blue, the dreamgiver was just about to leave the orphanage, when a golden egg whooshed down and cracked onto two innocent siblings (a brother and a sister) and liquid from the egg poured down onto them. Before they got to open their eyes, they were transported to a forest and didn’t know how to get out. Poor Michelle and Mike were frightened and Michelle nearly broke into tears.

Motionlessly, Michelle and Mike lay there in the forest, under the green dry leaves, as trees howled under the morning’s sunrise. It was really the loud rustle of leaves that woke the two siblings up whilst shattered nerves made their skin pale as a daisy’s petals. Bravely, Michelle stood up – knee first – and made a sharp, wide-eyed glance into the distance of the mysterious forest.

Terrified, they knocked away from the dangerous situation as they needed a plan to escape from this nightmare! Heart pounding, Mike pulled Michelle by the arm and started to run through the forest with her by his side, past trees, leaves, flowers. Until, in the distance, Mike saw a mossy, brown door. He decided to risk it, as there was nothing else he could do. Nothing. At. All! Until they came to a dead end. Silence. Nothing but a cold, icy breeze. Thankfully Michelle remembered the key-chained flashlight. It was the only possession that she had left from her mother. Until, The Incident!

As soon as they turned around, a door stood right in front of them, which Michelle was desperate to open, but before Mike could warn her she was already inside. Grey smoke was floating around, when Mike decided to cover his nose with his sleeve. The more smoke Michelle breathed, the more tired

she was getting, until THUMP! On the ground, Michelle was lying there, still breathing, but slower than usual. He picked her up. And Ran.

Rustle of leaves, howling trees, shining sun. BANG! There it was, a violet, purple bruise at the side of his head. Breathing heavily, he opened his eyes to see Michelle standing there, but also a green, wide, wall. No, wait. A maze. It was a risk, but it was worth it. Afterwards and hours of searching, Mike was about to give up, feeling hopeless dreams although Michelle wouldn’t let him, she was right, a door was shining right in front of them!

The moon gave a bright sting like a needle through the dormitory window, as both siblings lay peacefully in their soothing beds, receiving two hugs from their fluffy pillows. Joyfully, the Dreamgiver gave a relieved sigh and drifted off, following the moon’s silver glows. He learned a lesson, so for next time he’ll be much, much more quiet and careful as he fluttered off!

Hopes and Dreams

Let the ash seek the embers concealed within,In the emptiness so break that the darkness sings. It may be dark now, but forge on,For fires are said to withdraw if left in the solitude of the darkness.

Allow the fire to spur the thick, deep red,Allow it to unsheathe the passion of desire.Give passage to the flame to rekindle the kingdom,Let it burn and enrage the jewel at the head. For without this hope,What is there?

To be unlit is to be hollow,A deceased kingdom stained,With a thin, finite puddle of red drifting into the silence. To be unlit is to be a vessel without a soul,Lost in a world without light.

Hear the screech in the deepest cave,Of a man overwhelmed by the creature of despair,As he strains to attain the grail. His reverie becomes his sword, his hopes become his resolve. His trail may run deep and red,But he understands that he must pave his path,To where, only he knows.

The Jungle

The Jungle is the unofficial name; Paul’s junkyard was its official name. Personally I prefer Hell, the underworld or simply the pit because that’s what it is, a pit where we will simply die and rot away. It was meant to be a break on the way to freedom but the Jungle has become our life, our stark reality.

When we first got here I thought it was better than home. if you forget about the sickness, the smell and the soldiers. Yes. if you just forget about those things then this place is just paradise. The smuggler said to wait here until the right ship will dock then he’ll smuggle us in and then we are on our own but that was before a bullet went through his head. That was the first time I saw a dead body, it was sickening I felt like throwing up but I didn’t have enough time to stare at the lifeless body, the soldiers were coming. The stomping of the boots rung clearly in the compact metallic storage room my family was hiding in, with every breath I took my panic levels rose. We escaped but how is still a mystery, the overwhelming panic I felt made it hard to remember anything from that night but I’ll always remember that feeling.

Things weren’t always like this, back in the motherland my father was a proud leader and my mother was an award winning writer. We used to live in the capital, me and sisters used watch the parade of planes, tanks and soldiers every year, it was mishmash blend of noises and colours. Life was breezy and easy in my young eyes but I didn’t realize the danger that would strike us. We were living the life of luxury

until we weren’t. Suddenly we were taken out of school; we packed our belongings only taking the essentials and ran off into the outlands with everything we owned in the world on our backs.

At the time I thought there would be no place on earth worse than the Outlands but then I came here. In the Outlands we couldn’t talk about our life back in the capitol. Mother said that the walls had ears so we were never completely alone. Nowhere was safe. One moment you could be talking to a neighbour then suddenly the soldiers would cart you away for whatever reason, didn’t even have to make sense, we had to worship the ground they stood on or else... In the Outlands I learnt what our glorious army did, they terrorized the poor, took advantage of desperate people. They understood what they were doing but we had no choice and they knew it.

It’s around midnight when we meet up with them, the new smugglers; it’s just three of them. The leader of the pack is the tall, old one; his face is weathered and has a dark grin. The other two look kind of young and clueless, one tries smiling at my sister for some strange reason. Although her face doesn’t show it, I can see the disgust in her eyes. For a few minutes the pack of smugglers and my parents talk, they talk fast with their voices rising every minute until my father starts full out shouting. Mother calms him down and sweetly kisses him, back home I always saw my parents share affection even through hardship they still haven’t stopped. My mother goes off with the leader while my father takes us back to the tent. He looks like he is going to cry.

Its early morning when she returns. There are fresh bruises shaped like handprints on her arm. Lots of purple and blue marks, her eyes have tears in them. Although not one of them

falls, her face is a face of steel hiding the pain and sadness. When our eyes meet I don’t even need to ask what happened, I know, we know. My father hugs her tightly like he never wants to let her go again, me and my sister sit silently on the muddy ground not sure what to do. They both come over to us and say we’re leaving tomorrow for good. I want to be happy that we are leaving the Jungle but not like this.

A Symbol of Friendship

One day I went for a walk in the field. I came across a big green tree and a bird chirping, so I asked it for its name.

“My name is Lualua”

She asked about my name, and I told her it was Lulu. I asked her if she would like to hang around with me, to which she replied “Yes, because friendship is the most precious of things in life.” I asked her where she lived, her reply was, ”I live on that tree - she is my friend”. So I suggested we go to the tree so I that could befriend her too. Lualua agreed saying “Come on, I have no objection to you meeting each other”. When they arrived, the tree said “Who is this girl Lualua?”

“She is my friend I just met her a little while ago” said Lualua.

“Welcome…” the tree said in a very humble and friendly manner. I asked her “What is your name?” “Samar” she replied. I praised the beauty of her name and asked about her age, to which she replied “One hundred years old.”

I told her that I was honoured and happy to have met her and she said the same to me then added, “I did not ask you about you name”. I replied “It is Lulu”.

Samar offered Lualua and I some apples she was carrying in her bosom “Taste this delicious and fresh apple”.

very hot so when we both got tired we sat under the shadow of Samar and soon the sun started to fade and the night began to emerge with the stars invading the sky. We looked up to the sky and noticed a big star looking down on us in astonishment so we asked her “Why are you looking at us in this way Star?”

“I am astonished by this beautiful friendship of yours”, said the star. We both thanked her then asked if she would like to join us and she agreed. We then asked her about her name and age and she replied that he name is Noor and she is only 11,000 years old.

We invited the star to come and stay with us but she declined and when we asked why? She explained, “I can’t -- I am much bigger than your planet and my temperature is extremely high”. We asked the star if she had any friends apart from us and she told us that she had another friend called star. We asked her if the sun and the moon were her friends too? “Yes they are both my friends, as I exploded from the sun and the moon is like me; it only appears at night”

We asked star to play with us and although she wanted to play she did not know how it can done.

“Well you provide the light for us, I will hide, Lualua you will seek me and you Samar will be where Lualua will stand under and count!’

And so we all went and played until daylight emerged. In the morning, a woodcutter came announcing that he will cut the tree.

“No please uncle don’t cut her, she is my friend” I said but he

Fight for Our Rights!!!

Alright listen up, folks! This one’s for all adults,Who never listen to us kids -

enough’s enough, we’re lifting the lid!You never seem to listen

when we’re on ‘The Daily Kiddy Mission’.That ensures it’s us who have all the fun,

until YOU say OUR day is done,It’s finally time for an intervention, to say the things we didn’t mention.

There are a lot of things you make us do,that really we know are up to you.

Like taking out bins and washing up plates? When all we want is to stay up late!

We all know this will be hard to swallow,But sorry! The Dos and Don’ts are still as follows:

DO feel free to buy me the odd treat,DON’T give me things you know I won’t eat,

DO understand when I answer you back,But DON’T ever try to take my stuff back!”DO make allowances for the mess I make,

Just DON’T expect me to tidy, for goodness sake!DO let me be the kid who paints the walls.

DON’T be upset if we’re out and nature calls.DO always let me have my own way,

DON’T adjust to the word ‘no’ being something you get to say.

It could all be so simple, if you could just follow every rule. This ‘Fight for our Rights’ would then only be in school,We know by law there’s a lot you’re not supposed to do,

But we feel as kids that our laws should matter too!

I’ll keep dreaming as life passes me by,I think my dreams keep me sane,

I dream of happiness a life without pain,We need to aim high, even if we miss,

Stop killing the old, young and unborn,Stop letting families being torn,

There’s violence cruelty and hate,Wait, let me ask, is it worth it?

Is this our country’s fate? Some people say I’m stuck in this place,

And I’ll never go anywhere,But in my dreams I’ve already been there,I know someday I will have to wake up,

But I feel the real world is more like a nightmare,When we know we are human from the sadness we bear

When a life is extinguished anytime anywhere...I wish for the moment when humanity wins,

When people aren’t strangers but equal and friends,I’m safe in my closed eye wonderland,

This poem goes to all the dreamers that understand,No matter what they say...

Keep your dreams but don’t dream your life away.

Human Rights

To the world I ask, I am a human. Where is my right? Have you ever heard that a human is humiliatedGod the almighty created humans free with rights and bestowed on them dignity in all their religionsHe gave them value with the right to choose their path in life, and made them live in a place with dignityTo the world I ask, I am a human where is my right? Is my right to be hungry and live in poverty and deprivation?Isn’t it my right to live out my childhood in joy and happiness without pain and losses.Isn’t it my right to live in a world free of fear and full of safetyHow I wish to live in a world ruled by fairness, free of oppression by a SultanIt is my right to be taught at my school that exudes calm, and emotionally and mentally relaxation. To the world I ask, I am a human. Where is my right? I want to live in a world full of care and kindnessA world without barriers where humans can live happily anywhere, anytime. Is it my right to live in horror? Is it my right to live as though I am not a human?Isn’t it my right to sleep surrounded by my family, together, all in good health both physically and mentally. How I wish to sleep peacefully without fearing for my family from missile attacks and aggressions.Isn’t it my right to sleep and see in my dreams the safety and

happiness have filled this place.Instead of seeing destruction, rescue missions, killing, missiles and fire.God created us in a favourable image that holds beauty, tenderness and every kind trait. It is no one’s right to sabotage this image into parts and entitiesIt is my right to draw firearms away from me so that I have a healthy body and heart. It is my right to live in a stable and safe country that is beautiful, resembling hope and smelling like sweet basil. For the country to be nothing but green grass with flowers of different coloursGod, my country is dear to my heart, dear to my soul and dear in its value. How I wish to be treated in a good way like Islam and good faith has dictatedAnd that we live in a country that is inclusive of everyone and that is kind to women, girls and young men.To the world I ask, I am a human. Where is my right? Tell me, am I not a human in your opinion?Isn’t it my right to live a decent and dignified life on a planet created by God?

Why Aren’t Children Treated Fairly?

In exams and education, why are children pressurised? In the things that they do, why are children criticised? Why can’t children vote – they barely have a say.Because the people of the future are the children of today.

Why are some parents so cruel when their children don’t come top?Why can’t inhumane child abuse just come to a stop? What if children treated adults the other way around? Then the children would be shouted at until they made no sound.

Children should be “seen and not heard” – why is that so?Because we were born with mouths for a reason, you know.Parents can compare their ‘great results’ with their child’s, and shout. But exams today are much harder – there’s nothing to brag about.

Why do people frown upon the ‘youth of today’?Because those unbehaved children learnt it from someone, didn’t they?Just as they influence their maths skills and teach the alphabetThey (adults) influence behaviour too, please don’t forget.

A child makes mistakes – we all know that.We know because we are one or have been one – that’s a fact.

Give them rights – the freedom of speech…Because when we grow up, this will be what we teach. My dream is equality for children: girls and boysWe are smarter than we look – care about more than toys.Treat children well, give them a say.Because the people of the future are the children of today.
