Can you identify this bird sitting on a Manitoulin Island cedar rail fence with a faux-fur hoodie and black leather sleeves?

The Manitoulin and the North Shore Tourism Association

Are we paying enough attention to the world around us? What kind of information have we been filling our minds with? How practical is our knowledge these days? Are we good at doing things for ourselves? Do we have the necessary skills to teach our own children?

Possible answers:

a) A rare Northern Ontario species - has a funny name - I can’t remember what they are called ... gimme a sec ...

b) It’s a penguin displaced by climate change poor thing. ut they can’t y - how did it get to the Island? Chi-cheemaun do you think?

c) It’s a stubborn teenaged buzzard who doesn’t know how to socialize. I have one at home. Doesn’t go out much.

d) It’s clearly a fake. Probably stuffed or something. Maybe photoshopped.

The Festival of A Thousand Skills September 26, 27, 28, 2014

and the local initiative A Taste of Manitoulin invite you to join us for:

A three day skill sharing experience with more than a hundred micro workshops and demonstrations of a wide variety of community and family knowledge and cultural traditions.

And did we mention the food? Local, fresh, home-made, delicious, and available throughout the festival.

Learning takes place everywhere - on the docks, by the fires, in the kitchens, on the lakes and channel, in the woods, at the community halls and museums. Book your stay at a cabin, hotel, inn, lodge - or spend a few days with family and friends camping!

Come and find out for yourself who the little fellow at the top is.

If you really aren’t sure which answer is correct, you might want to keep reading ...

To put it another way, haven’t you dreamed of a kitchen pantry filled to the ceiling with your own preserves? Do you remember which stories to tell around the campfire, or how to make smores, which one is the Little Dipper, and how to put the fire out safely? Can you clean a fish and fry it on an open fire, or bait a hook? And now that you remember all the things you forgot to learn and show your childen, what are you going to do about it? Well don’t worry - we’ve got your back!

Destination ManitoulinSo here’s the deal, new this season: if you book to stay at a Manitoulin

resort, hotel, motel, campground that has opted in to the new “Destination Manitoulin” program (and most have) then you are eligible to receive a $5.00 booking discount as long as you are coming to Manitoulin, leaving Manitoulin (or both) aboard the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun ferry—where you’ll receive a further 10 percent discount on your ticket when you make a ferry reservation! The process begins when you make your room reservation at a “Destination

Manitoulin” participating business. (Don’t forget to ask if they’re a member of the new program.)The Manitoulin business will then give you a code number or “tag number”

which you will quote when you call the Owen Sound Transportation

your vehicle which will earn you a 10 percent discount on your fare, both one way and return (so long as the return trip is booked at the same time

shown above. It’s not available through online bookings. When you arrive at your resort, hotel, motel, etc. you simply show

proof that you’ve gotten to Manitoulin (or will use the ferry to leave or both) and you will promptly receive the $5.00 booking discount on your accommodation. The project is a joint one between participating Manitoulin Island resorts

and the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC), operators of the Chi-Cheemaun ferry service. It’s optional, so not every business has opted in yet, but it was only

It was proposed by Manitoulin tourist operators Ameal and Cathy Leduc, proprietors of the Buckhorn Motel in South Baymouth, as a way of encouraging more tourist travellers to enjoy the unique Chi-Cheemaun

experience. Mr. Leduc and OSTC’s CAO Susan Schrempf hope that the cooperative discounting program can be embraced by other sectors of the Manitoulin tourism industry as well, including restaurants, gift shops and perhaps other areas of the retail sector. For now, Mr. and Mrs. Leduc are the voluntary administrators of the

program and are encouraging all of Manitoulin Island’s accommodation providers to become partners with the Chi-Cheemaun by opting into “Destination Manitoulin”.

LITTLE CURRENTAlong Little Current’s historic waterfront from Low Island Park at its west

end to the Swing Bridge Park, there are a series of plaques that explain the history of what is (or once was) in that spot or overlook. A hint: there is a path around the perimeter of Low Island Park and two of the plaques are on this path. There is also one in Turner Park and you’ll have to climb the new cliff side stairway that leads from Water Street East up to the park in order

to read it. (Another hint: A return walk along this route, along with one Low Island Park perimeter circuit, besides giving you a glimpse into the town’s marine origins is also a healthy 5 km walk).

SHEGUIANDAHDrop by the Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah (off Highway 6) to

pick up your printed guide of historic buildings and places which are well marked for your walking or biking tour. One of them is even a milliner’s shop from days gone by. The walking guide is extensive and interesting.

SOUTH BAYMOUTHThere is a pamphlet that serves to guide you on an interesting walk around

South Baymouth, the Chi-Cheemaun port town, originally founded as a

and at businesses throughout the community. There is also a biking guide for cycling through the larger municipal region, Tehkummah Township, available at no charge.

KAGAWONG“Ontario’s prettiest village” naturally boasts a self guided walking map. It

takes you along the river, up or down from Bridal Veil Falls and throughout the community and explains the various uses Kagawong’s many historical buildings have had in the town’s evolution.

PROVIDENCe BAYSeveral times each summer, a lifelong resident of the community leads

groups of visitors around the once-bustling port town on Manitoulin’s south shore and talks about the town’s history. Check The Manitoulin Expositor’s

Interpretive Centre at the Providence Bay beach.

BY FERRYA trip on the Chi-Cheemaun is a 1 hour and 45 minute cruise aboard a full

service vehicle/passenger ferry offering lounge areas, restaurant, children’s play area, video arcade, dog deck and gift shop. This ferry, that plies the water between Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula to South Baymouth on the south shore of Manitoulin, is rated to carry the equivalent of 143 vehicles and 638 passengers. A voyage on the Chi-Cheemaun is a “must do” Great Lake experience. When you make Manitoulin Island your ultimate destination and make the

drive north to the Tobermory terminal, there is much to explore along this interesting trip north. You’ll arrive at Tobermory, the Chi-Cheemaun’s southern port from

southern Ontario via either Highway 6 or Highway 10. There are other routes, as your road map will indicate, but these are the main highways from the south, and they come together just south of Wiarton to form one highway and ahead lies the Bruce Peninsula, with its magic and mystery. On one side of the Bruce lies Lake Huron, on the other Georgian Bay.

Travelling up the Bruce you will pass through Wiarton, a busy regional shopping and service area with a very pleasant waterfront park just off the downtown. The next community north is Lions Head with its charming

shopping district and spectacular waterfront where you can get an idea of the rugged limestone cliffs that mark the Georgian Bay coast of the Bruce Peninsula.Check your time: if you have a reservation, you must show up

one hour before sailing time to claim it.Towards the tip of the Bruce there are three notable National

Parks; Bruce Peninsula National Park, Fathom Five National Marine Park and Flowerpot Island. There is much to explore in the town of Tobermory too.To check out discounts for your stay on Manitoulin and your

passage on the Chi-Cheemaun consult the information about “Destination Manitoulin”, (page 5), in this publication.

BY HIGHWAYIf you are coming to Manitoulin Island by road and you’re coming from

southern Ontario, you’ll be impressed by how quickly you can now get here from the south as Highway 400 now extends, with its four lanes, beyond Parry Sound. The four laning of the highway is also complete south from Sudbury as far as the Killarney turnoff and work to close the gap and four-lane the highway all the way from Toronto to Sudbury is progressing rapidly with a proposed completion date in 2018.There is a bypass around Sudbury, more four-lanes heading west (Highway

17, the Trans Canada Highway) and in less than an hour you’ll turn left off Highway 17 onto Highway 6 and drive through the town of Espanola.

one of the most scenic half-hour drives in Ontario. For more than half your drive, you’ll pass through the Canadian Shield

formation in all its granite glory then on to the limestone of the northern reaches of the Niagara escarpment.

River First Nation) and the rocky transition evident here from the highway devolves from the granite through a rose quartz formation to the limestone.Soon you’re at the famous swing bridge, perhaps waiting at a red light (it’s

a single lane structure). If you’re fortunate enough to arrive when the bridge is swinging just relax

and take it all in. You’re almost there.

The story of the Odawa magician Maswein and Bridal Veil Falls, as it was passed on to us by the late Ernie Debassige of M’Chigeeng.Kagawong is a beautiful spot known by all who have dwelt here

from the earliest of times as a mystical abode of spirits. As the story goes, it came to happen that the Odawas (sometimes called

the Ottawas) were driven from their home on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron by their relentless enemies the Iroquois and forced to settle with their relations far to the west by the Mississippi. But the magician Maswein remained behind at the falls of Kagawong (now called Bridal Veil Falls) to act as sentinel for his people and to keep watch on the Iroquois that he might give timely information of their movements; and incidentally, com-mune with and learn from the Manitou of the place.Rising early one morning, leaving his two boys asleep, Maswein went

hunting through the deepest of woods behind Kagawong. He came upon the border of an open plain and as he was making his way across the meadow, a man of small stature rose from the earth. The man wore a red feather upon his head. He greeted Maswein with great cordiality, invited him to smoke and proposed a wrestling match.Maswein, nothing loath, agreed; they began to wrestle and Maswein threw

his opponent, but to his astonishment, the tiny man disappeared. Looking closely at the place where his opponent had vanished and the magician discovered an unhusked ear of corn topped with a red tassel.

As he drew close to the mysterious object, a voice arose from within it. “Take off my covering,” instructed the ear. “Pull off my body from the spine on which I grow, scatter the grains along the edge of the plain and return to this place after one moon.”Being a man of great wisdom, Maswein did as he was instructed and when

Grandmother Moon had completed a full cycle of her changes in the night sky, he returned to the wrestling ground where he discovered the entire plain blanketed with the tiny shoots and blades of new-grown corn. Where he had tossed the cob itself, broad luxurious leaves and vines of pumpkins now completely covered that place.Maswein carefully attended and nurtured the plants through the summer

and in the fall he gathered up some of the pumpkins. As he moved about his harvest, Maswein heard once again the mysterious voice of the Manitou. “Maswein, had you not conquered me in wrestling, these gifts would not have been yours. Henceforth you shall never never be in want of my body and it will be nourishment for the human race. Thus did the Anishinabe receive the boon of corn.Maswein had many other adventures and underwent many trials before

the magician was able to travel to the lands by the Mississippi to bring his people back to their homeland and the mystical falls at Kagawong, but that is another story.

Editor’s Note: This legend is kindly reprinted through the courtesy of the

Long ago in a land that was pure and clean, bountiful and promising there lived a people. These people were the Anishinabek. Each morning at sunrise prayers were said for the day. The Anishinabek thanked their Creator for the beautiful land gifted them, the clear water, the fresh air, all

the birds and mostly for the sun that gave everything life. A great deal of time was spent offering thanks to the Creator in this manner and also in the manner of feasts and ceremonies.Because of the Anishinabeks’ pure devotion to the Creator, and because

they had humbled themselves before Him, the Creator decided to gift his people with a special rock. The Creator made this rock very high, higher than any of the surrounding hills, so high, it was said, that the Anishinabek would only have to reach out their hands from this place and receive a message from the Creator. The Creator taught the Anishinabek how to use this rock by giving dreams to the elders of the tribes. The elders then began to take the young ones of their tribe to this rock. Here the young boy or girl would be placed in a depression in the rock. The depression was in the shape of a human body. When this young person would lie in this depression, it was as if the rock cradled him. The young were left in this

depression with only a blanket and small amount of water. They were instructed to fast, and to pray to the Creator for a dream, a dream that would foretell their future. The Anishinabek gave this rock the

name, ‘Dreamer’s Rock.’And so, to the youth, the Creator

gifted answers about the course their lives would take. This was received with great humility by the Anisinabek because they realized how powerful knowledge like this could be. To the older ones of the tribe who fasted and prayed upon this rock, He gifted them with the knowledge of herbs and medicine to relieve their ills. He also gifted some with the powers to see into the future of the Mother Earth. One of these men was

Shawanosowe. Shawanosowe had visited this rock since he was a young boy. There was something remarkable about this boy, however. He fasted longer than any of the other boys. He dreamt of many things on Dreamer’s Rock while he was young and sometimes his friends would tease him.The tribe gave him his name

because when he was young and he slept upon this rock, he always awoke facing the west and the elders predicted that he would be a great medicine man because of this.Shawanosowe kept returning to this

rock and he became a great Chief. His young friends laughed no more. Wherever Shawanosowe went he

spoke of his vision and he talked about the coming of men with hair on their faces and dressed like women in robes. On one occasion, while Shawanosowe fasted and prayed upon this rock,

he was visited by a huge white thunderbird which told him to rise up and get upon its back. This huge thunderbird then took Shawanosowe to the east where the Killarney Mountains are. It is said of Shawanosowe, that the

The Creator held a dish of water on His lap and asked Shawanosowe to look into it. When Shawanosowe looked into this dish of water, he saw men and animals and learned what they were thinking. He saw the coming of the pale-faced ones and he saw wars. He questioned the Creator as to why this was all to be and the Creator answered that he should only concern himself with keeping his tribe in order and to keep the laws given by the Creator to the Anishinabek. The Creator then instructed Shawanosowe to

honouring Him.Many were awed by his stories, his visions and Shawanosowe kept growing

in stature and power. Soon he had the knowledge of every medicine needed to heal and cure.Shawanosowe became known far and wide for his ability to heal a sick

or dying person.Following his thunderbird vision Shawanosowe was found on the shores

Shawanosowe to his tribe, and he told everyone of his experience. This is why today the story can be told.

the Creator, but one spring he failed to do so. A huge storm rose up,

displeased as His instructions were not honoured. In great humility and with all speed, Shawanosowe erected another pole and held the ceremony immediately.Today the descendants of Shawanosowe’s tribe may be found in a village

called Birch Island. These people dwell near Dreamer’s Rock where still many Anisinabek visit to fast and pray. Today, when the future seems so uncertain and when sometimes it is easy

to become lost inside from the outer chaos of the world, Dreamer’s Rock beckons.A shining promise, a glorious reminder of the bond between the Creator

and his people, the Anishinabek.

On Manitoulin, the arts of every kind are coming into their own and are playing an ever more important role in the life of our communities.

The ancestors of Manitoulin’s First Nation citizens had been the only residents of this Island for thousands of years before the fairly recent (1870s) coming to the Island by people of European descent. It is appropriate, then, that, in modern times, First Nations artists and

enjoyment and for sale. There is a strong current of artistic talent that is evident in every First

Nation community and in the early 1980s, the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) came into existence to encourage, foster and showcase this talent. The OCF is still there, at M’Chigeeng First Nation, but in the same

community there are Kasheesh Studios, Neon Raven Gallery, Nimkee Studios and Lillian’s Crafts (which also features a unique quill box museum) and the Roman Catholic Church, located almost directly across

from the OCF, is a work of art by itself inside and out and is worth a visit. In Wikwemikong, James Simon has his own gallery as does Leland Bell.

late Norval Morrisseau’s Woodland School whereby the legends and oral

First Nation artists’ work can also be seen at the Kathleen Reynolds Mastin Gallery at the Deb-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group’s new Creation Centre in downtown Manitowaning and at the Ten Mile Point Trading Post and Gallery on Highway 6 mid way between Manitowaning and Little Current (at the spectacular lookout).Over the past 25 years, many more art galleries have become an

increasingly important part of our communities. Some, like the Edwards Studio in Kagawong and the Hettmann Studio

near Spring Bay are operated by the artists themselves primarily (but not exclusively) to show their own arts and crafts.

Others, such as Turner’s Gallery in downtown Little Current, Perivale Gallery on the Perivale Road on the west side of Lake Kagawong, the Country Store beside the Inn in Meldrum Bay and South Bay Gallery in South Baymouth each show a range of the work of “their” artists so a few days of touring Manitoulin art galleries will leave you with an understanding of the depth and variety of Island talent. In Gore Bay, the museum complex does this well and, its main gallery,

high above the town by the courthouse complex, features at least two shows of Manitoulin artists each summer. In a bold move, the museum also assumed ownership of a large timber-frame building on the waterfront (by the harbour) which has lent itself perfectly to the conversion to gallery space for individual artists and artisans, as well as providing additional space for other artists’ work and it is also the home of Ravens Eryie Studios where the work of the resident artist is on display, in addition to providing her working space. In NEMI, the Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah and the Little Current

Library have gallery space and, over the spring, summer and fall months, annually mount a number of shows of individual and collective artists’ work. The Sheguiandah Museum gallery also has an annual juried art contest with all entries on sale. For 35 years, the LaCloche Country Art Show has been holding an annual

Cycling is very rapidly becoming one of the most popular ways of exploring Ontario by vacationers who want to combine a healthy lifestyle with a means of transportation that also ensures they’ll enjoy their holiday landscapes at eye level.Manitoulin Island is a holiday destination that is uniquely appropriate for

cycling. In fact, Manitoulin has its own biking cheerleading organization: Manitoulin Island Cycling Advocates (MICA) that came to prominence provincially through its recently successful lobbying efforts that resulted in

out with metre-wide paved shoulders when the portion of the highway from the Chi-Cheemaun port town, South Baymouth, to Ten Mile Point was being reconstructed by the Ministry of Transportation. There is a commitment to add similar paved shoulders to the balance of the highway, (on to Little Current), and MICA further has been promised paved shoulders when Highway 551 is rebuilt between M’Chigeeng First Nation and the town of Mindemoya. There is more of this nature in the works too. This is all by way of saying that Manitoulin Island

is a place that embraces a cycling-friendly attitude and, just now, there are over 20 ‘Welcome Cyclists’ accommodation establishments. The MICA group has published a cycling map,

‘Manitoulin Cycling Routes and Roads’ that is available throughout Manitoulin and also online at www.manitoulincycling.com. It lays out a dozen recommended loops, each with its own highlights and vistas.Manitoulin’s highways are all well paved, properly cambered and, even at

the height of the summer season, the roads are relatively free of motorized vehicles because the people who come here in their cars for their vacations are snugged away where they want to be; at a resort or at the family cottage, so driving the roads isn’t a priority for them.Manitoulin features breathtaking views, one after another, especially

along Highway 6 and Highway 540, the east-west corridor that connects Little Current on the east to Meldrum Bay on the western tip. There is a busy bike shop, Lightfoot Bikes, conveniently and centrally

located just outside of Mindemoya. Ph. 705-377-7801. Email: [email protected]. Website: www.lightfootbikes.com.There is even a special bicycling event every year: it’s called the ‘Passage

Ride’, organized by MICA. Participants coming to Manitoulin from southern Ontario via the Chi-Cheemaun ferry enjoy free passage on the ferry and can look forward to fun and camaraderie with other cycling enthusiasts, great food and musical entertainment at supper and lunch. Some resorts offer free shuttle services for their cycling guests. The Passage Ride is in June

Manitoulin, visit www.welcomecylists.ca.Information on Manitoulin cycling is also available

at www.ontariobybike.ca.So what else do you need to know? Perhaps that our

towns, First Nations and hamlets are in easy cycling distances from one another and in them you can catch your breath, refuel your energy.Come and ride our quiet roads, see the migrating

birds and discover the native orchids along your paths. Smell the hay drying in the sunshine and swim in as many of our 100-plus lakes as you please. You’ll be able to admire a grazing deer, smile at

chokecherries in fall and the dark nighttime skies of Manitoulin, unblemished by ambient light from streetlamps, will render you wonderstruck by the multitude of stars and constellations you can see.By the way, for the trail bike enthusiasts, there are two sets of trails

available for you to challenge on Manitoulin. One of them is at McLean’s Park (20 km north of South Baymouth

Manitoulin Island is a place of two cultures, but not a place of two cultural solitudes; that is precisely the magnet whose force draws

so many to visit this unique place.Yes, we’re unique. For one thing, Manitoulin has the claim to being the

largest island in fresh water in the whole, wide world. Its very name is a prayer of sorts for the Odawa and Ojibwe people, for

whom this place was home for thousands of years before the people of European descent came, knew it was so special that they named it Gitchi Mnidoo (Manitou) Mnis, which translates as ‘God’s Isle’ or ‘Spirit Isle’. It was here, on Manitoulin Island that the great spirit Gitchi Manitou is said to

all the features of the land developed. The Creator then bestowed upon humans the greatest gift of all: the ability to dream. We are reminded of this

River First Nation. It’s a spot held sacred by not only First Nations people from Manitoulin but from all around the Great Lakes and beyond for at the top of the high white quartz hill is an indentation into which a human form

sites in the Great Lakes region where young men would (and still do) come to fast, sleep in the rock for several nights and have their future life and their purpose revealed to them in their dreams. The holy name given to Manitoulin Island, the vision quest site and much

more were the underpinnings of this place that European settlers found when they began to arrive here and take up farms and build towns in the 1870s, a process that was completed by the outbreak of the First World War when all non First Nation land had been claimed by the newcomers, who of course came with their own beliefs and customs.

But during the hectic time when roads were being built, farms cleared of timber and stumps and then ploughed for cultivation, no one ever thought of suggesting a change in the name of the place for it had been named for the great spirit and to suggest calling it anything else would have been sacrilegious, no matter what religious tradition you embraced. So now, just over 150 years after treaties were signed and the bulk of

Manitoulin was made available for settlement by the children of southern Ontario farmers and merchants, the populations of First Nations people and people of European extraction are nearly equal in number to one another. There is a strong spirit of cooperation here between native and non native

communities and nothing demonstrates this more than the recent example of the new Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre located on the Little Current waterfront. It was conceived and developed by the Great Spirit Circle Trail, the First

Nations tourism marketing group based in M’Chigeeng and serving all local First Nation communities. The new hotel (it opened in the late spring of 2013) is owned by seven First Nation communities but they chose to locate it in a non-First Nation community.Having a new hotel in Little Current is certainly a plus for that community

but it was a wise business decision for its First Nation owners because they were able to purchase lakeshore property, located just past the Manitoulin entry from the swing bridge, thus honouring the old real estate maxim: ‘Location, location location’.Consequently Little Current gets a new hotel, some jobs and all the rest

while the First Nation owners get great visibility for their project which will certainly help its success and so everyone is happy.

It’s like that all over Gitchi Manitou Mnis: people from both cultures shop in one another’s places of business, play sports together (both on the same teams and as rivals), support one another’s charity activities, laugh together and cry together and this experience will also become a part of your Manitoulin Island memories; your vision and dreams.Another mutually-complementary feature here is the arts scene and the
