Six finals is an accolade laden seniorclass comprised of April Burkholder,Terin Martinjak and Kelly Lea.
Burkholder, the reigning SEC andNCAA Central Region Gymnast of theYear, has been the Tigers' anchor inthe all-around each of the past threeseasons. She is expected to againserve that role come January.
"The thing that has made April so
successful is her determination andher consistency," said Breaux. "If youcan go into competition 100% sure, confident in your gymnastics and withno fear, you are going to be able tomaster what you are doing. April hasdone that, and that's what she bringsto this team. It's total utter confi-dence."
Burkholder's confidence is justi-fied as she has earned a total of nineAll-America honors and won a team-
leading 18 all-around titles and 59individual event crowns during hercareer.
Martinjak, a 2005 All-Americanselection on the beam, has been astaple in the Tigers' beam and floorlineups the past three years andshould again have a dominant pres-ence in those events.
"We feel like Terin is going to bea real steady and mature factor in ourlineup," said Breaux. "Her beam is as
solid as ever and while we are askingher to increase her difficulty on floor,we think she can continue to con-tribute on that event as much as shehas in the past."
Lea, the Tigers' leadoff performeron the bars last season, also sawaction on the floor in 2005. She hasupgraded her tumbling during the off-season and will challenge for posi-tions in both lineups.
The JuniorsRounding out this year's upper-
classmen is the junior trio of LisaRennie, Nicki Butler and Kelly Phelan.Invaluable members of the LSU squadover the last two seasons, the three-some accounted for 10 of the Tigers'24 routines in 2005.
"This group has really been thesupport personnel in our lineup thelast two years," said Breaux. "Theyare fierce competitors that competewith a lot of difficulty and consisten-cy. They have the possibility ofaccounting for 12 of our 24 scores. Asa coach you can't ask for more pro-ductivity than that."
Rennie was one of the Tigers' topproducers on the bars, beam and floorin 2005. She garnered 11 individualevent titles - six on the beam, five onthe bars - during the regular seasonand capped the year by earning bothAll-America and All-SEC honors on thebars.
"Lisa is somebody that lives tocompete," said Breaux. "We feel likeshe will be a rock for us in any eventwe put her in."
Butler emerged as a top all-arounder for the Tigers late last year. She finished the season as a second-team All-SEC selection and has hersights set even higher in 2006.

Sporting one of the most talented lineups in recent history, the LSU gymnastics team has its sights set on one thing andone thing only in 2006, a berth into the NCAA Super Six teamfinals. Having missed the championship round by the narrow-
est of margins in recent years, the 13-member squad, guided by headcoach D-D Breaux, has no plans of resting until the elusive goal isachieved.
The hard work began last spring and has continued into fall train-ing where the veteran group that returns eight letterwinners, includ-ing a trio of All-Americans and another three All-SEC performers, hasbeen diligent and steadfast in their preparations for the upcoming sea-son.
"We're strong, we're fit and this team is confident in their abili-ties," said Breaux. "They know what it takes to make the Super Sixand I know they won't be satisfied unless they get there."
Senior All-American April Burkholder
"Nicki is asking even more ofherself than we are asking of her,"said Breaux. "She has been trainingharder and with more focus this pre-season. We fully expect to open theyear with her in the all-around."
One of LSU'smost dependableathletes, Phelan is astaple in the Tigers'vault, beam andfloor lineups, thathas been called intoall-around action onseveral occasions.
"Kelly's callingcard is that she canhit and that's thebottom line," saidBreaux.
Phelan provedthat in 2005, hittinga remarkable 51 ofher 53 competitiveroutines.
The SophomoresA talented duo, in Ashleigh
Clare-Kearney and Emily Ellis, makeup this year's sophomore class.
Clare-Kearney had a sensationaldebut campaign, positioning herselfas one of the Tigers' most dynamicperformers on the vault and floor. In2005, she won a combined 11 indi-vidual events titles on the twoevents and even claimed an all-around crown in her only four-eventappearance of the season.
Due to a bruised bone in herwrist, Clare-Kearney sat out most ofSeptember and October, but hassince returned to full practices and istraining the vault, beam and floor forthe upcoming year.
"Ashleigh ischomping at thebit," said Breaux."She's back and sheis eager and anxiousto get out there andcompete. I have nodoubts she'll beready come Jan. 6."
Ellis sat out allof 2005 after suffer-ing a broken armduring the presea-son. She returns forher sophomore yearwith a clean bill ofhealth and has thepossibility to crackthe lineup on any ofthe four events.
"Emily has worked so hard. Shehas been training the all-around andlooks great," said Breaux. "We arelooking at her performance right nowas if this was her freshman year. Weanticipate that we may have to suf-fer through some inconsistenciesuntil she finds her groove, but onceshe gets in it, I think she is going torock the house."
The FreshmenThe Tigers welcome five fresh
faces to campus in Lauren Klein,Amanda Morales, Vanessa Rodriquez,Christina Suhr and Teri Gibson.
"We feel like this freshmen classis going to make some real contribu-tions," said Breaux. "As a group theyare wonderful to work with. They arepositive, smart, focused and engagedin what they are doing."
Leading the way is Klein, a Level10 national qualifier, who hails fromThe Woodlands, Texas. Breaux feelsshe is the freshman that has the bestchance of first breaking into the all-around lineup.
"Lauren is on all-around pace,"said Breaux. "We've gotten greattraining, great commitment to ourconditioning and good focus from herand that has transcended into steadyprogress since her arrival."
Morales, the freshmen class'only in-state product, joins the Tigersfrom Covington. A Level 10 athlete atNorth Shore Gymnastics, Morales wasa state and regional all-around cham-pion before tearing the ACL in herright knee during her junior season.
"Amanda is a sleeping giant,"said Breaux. "She had a knee injurythat required follow up surgery, butshe is working hard and with eachweek she continues to get better andbetter."
Rodriguez and Suhr both join theTigers from the Sunshine state.Rodriquez, a three-time Level 10national qualifier and the 2005Florida state all-around champion, hails from Homestead where shetrained at Universal Gymnastics.
Suhr, another three-time Level10 national qualifier, finished ninthon the beam at the 2005 champi-onship meet. A native ofWindermere, Suhr trained at OrlandoMetro Gymnastics, the former club ofcurrent teammate Kelly Phelan.
Rounding out the list of new-comers is Gibson, who comes toBaton Rouge from Burlington,Ontario, where she was a member ofthe Canadian Senior National Team.

LSU Gymnastics Practice Facility
2 0 0 6 L S U G Y M N A S T I C S M E D I A G U I D E
When determining what makes an athletic program
successful, many elements factor in. Ask any
coach and they will say that quality facilities rank
among the most important elements.
The LSU Gymnastics team and head coach D-D Breaux
moved into the newly renovated gymnastics training area in
the LSU Field House in the Fall of 2000 and immediately
reaped the benefits of one of the finest training facilities in
the nation.
"It's a dream come true. It's a realization that the
commitment by the university, fans and boosters really is all
about the student-athlete," said Breaux.
The LSU Field House renovations and expansion created a
brand new facility, that includes a locker room, squad room,
18,143 square feet of training space – double the previous

Moore Track Stadium, legendary Tiger Stadium, the

D-D Breaux started to fathom ideas of a new facility
years ago, never thinking that one day dreams would
turn into realities under her tenure.
"About 10 years ago I started thinking about this
idea, and about five years ago I started talking about
it. Eventually, (former athletic director) Mr. (Joe) Dean
and some board members along with the Tiger
Athletic Foundation started listening. They realized that
we needed it not only to maintain our top 10 status,
but it was also a safety issue. We needed the upgrades
to protect the athletes."
As it is with all sports, talent is also a key ingredient
for success. A new facility not only enhances training
and safety, but is also be a very useful tool in
recruiting.
"I think it puts us ahead of some schools if there is
a facility race. When girls come to visit our facility they
will be impressed. They will be able to look out and
see the other athletic facilities, and they will be able
to grasp the entire experience they are looking at if
they choose to attend LSU.
"Young female athletes are coming to the realization
across the spectrum that opportunities are out there
for them. They can take scholarships and compete at
the collegiate level. So I think this project and other
things of this sort are very important."

student-athlete is providing LSU athletes with the best possible
resources to excel in the classroom. For more than 20 years, the
LSU Academic Center for Student-Athletes has helped to build well-rounded
student-athletes. But as times change and technology advances, the need
for further improvements still exists. As a result, the Cox Communications
Academic Center for Student-Athletes opened its doors in November of
2002. A $15 million renovation to the Gym Armory not only made it
among the nation’s premier centers, but put it at the forefront.
Improvements to the existing center give LSU student-athletes the best
opportunity for success by providing access to the latest technology, as
well as an array of expanded services.

Already a Louisiana Legend and one of the greatest college base-ball coaches of all time, J. Stanley “Skip” Bertman has made theseamless transition into the athletics director’s chair with the same
enthusiasm, vision and demand for excellence that were trademarks ofhis stellar coaching career.
In just fouryears as LSU’s director of athletics, Bertman has alreadyadded to his impressive list of on-the-field achievements. Under hisdirection, LSU enjoyed arguably the greatest athletics years in the histo-ry of the institution. In 2003-04 three teams won national championships, nine teams finished in the nation’s top ten, and fourteen teams ranked inthe top 25 and in 2004-05 14 teams advanced to the post-season. LSUteams also enjoyed improved grade point averages across the board, making the LSU student-athlete experience a success on and off the fieldsof competition.
While supervising the Tigers’ progress on the playing fields, he hasbegun to implement measures necessary to realize his vision of buildingthe LSU athletics department into the best in the country. Bertman’s boldand innovative plans promise to keep the Tigers among the nation’s elitein all phases of collegiate athletics.
Bertman is now in the midst of upgrading LSU’s athletics complex.Working hand in hand with the Tiger Athletic Foundation, Bertman hasalready overseen the completion of the Cox Communications AcademicCenter for Student-Athletes while renovating Tiger Stadium and the PeteMaravich Assembly Center, and constructing the Football OperationsCenter.
It was also Bertman who took the bold but essential move to imple-ment a seat contribution program in Tiger Stadium to fund facilityimprovements and ensure the financial stability of the LSU AthleticsDepartment for the next decade.
Bertman was named LSU's athletics director on January 19, 2001.With Bertman, LSU gained an athletics director who provides the leader-ship and experience necessary to manage the Tigers' $52 million budg-et.
Bertman guided LSU to five NCAA baseball titles, and his teams drewhuge crowds to venerable Alex Box Stadium, as the Tigers led the nationin attendance in each of his final six seasons (1996-2001).
He also served as head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team whichcaptured the bronze medal in Atlanta.
Bertman continues to be honored for his remarkable coachingtenure, as he was inducted in June, 2002, into the Louisiana Sports Hallof Fame. He was inducted into the American Baseball CoachesAssociation Hall of Fame in January, 2003.
In a Baseball America poll published in 1999, Bertman was voted thesecond greatest college baseball coach of the 20th century, trailing onlyRod Dedeaux of Southern California. Bertman and Dedeaux are the onlycoaches to win five CWS titles.
He had previously earned recognition as one of the nation's bright-est assistant coaches while at the University of Miami (Fla.) for eight sea-sons (1976-83). Before working at Miami, Bertman was renowned for hiscoaching excellence. In 11 seasons at Miami Beach High School, hedirected the Hi-Tides to a state championship and two runners-up finish-es and he was named Florida's Coach of the Year on three occasions.
In 1975, Bertman coached at Miami-Dade Downtown, leaving afterone season to join legendary head coach Ron Fraser at Miami. The movewas a homecoming of sorts, as Bertman spent his collegiate playing dayswith the Hurricanes as an outfielder and catcher from 1958-60. Heearned his B.A. in health and physical education from Miami in 1961 andreceived his master’s degree from UM in 1964.
Bertman and his wife Sandy are the parents of four daughters -Jan,Jodi, Lisa and Lori. The Bertman’s have three grandchildren - Sophie Faithand Isaac Stanley, the children of Emile and Lori Bertman Guirard, andSamuel Aaron, the son of Drew and Lisa Pate.

As the "Dean of Coaches" at LSU, head gymnastics coach D-DBreaux has represented the University at the highest levelboth in the gym and, most importantly, in the classroom for28 years. Her dedication to the student-athlete on an indi-vidual basis has transcended into academic success, commu-
nity involvement, Coach of the Year honors, SEC Championships andtop-10 national rankings throughout her tenure.
Now entering her 29th season as the mastermind of the LSUgymnastics program, the fire in Breaux's eyes burns as bright today asit did on her first day on the job.
For her dedication, Breaux has been recognized by her peers timeand time again, having been named SEC Coach of the Year on fiveoccasions (1993, 1994, 1995, 2000 and 2005) and NCAA CentralRegional Coach of the Year three times (1999, 2002 and 2005), inaddition to being named a finalist for National Coach of the Year hon-ors in 1988 when she guided the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at theNCAA Championships.
In 2005, the LSU program reached new heights under Breaux'sdirection as the Tigers made their 17th appearance at the NCAA
Championships, won their third regional title in the last four years andachieved the program's first ever No. 1 national ranking. Named boththe SEC and NCAA Central Coach of the Year for her team's efforts,Breaux also coached All-American April Burkholder to SEC and NCAACentral Region Gymnast of the Year honors for the second straight sea-son and helped Annie Gagnon, Lisa Rennie and Terin Martinjak to All-America honors and Nicki Butler and Burkholder to All-SEC accolades.
2004 was a banner year for the LSU program as it won the NCAACentral Regional title for the second time in the three years, beforefinishing seventh at the NCAA Championships, the Tigers' best finishat the national meet since the 1993 season. Individually, Breaux guid-ed the efforts of SEC and NCAA Central Region Gymnast of the YearApril Burkholder and All-American Annie Gagnon. Burkholder becameLSU's all-time top performer at the NCAA Championships, finishing sec-ond in the all-around to better Jennifer Wood's third-place effort at the1996 championships.
2003 saw Breaux mold a young and inexperienced Tiger squadinto one of the finest teams in the nation, as LSU recorded a second-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals and a top-10 showing at the

NCAA Championships. In 2002, Breaux guided her team to the NCAA Central Regional
title. The Tigers continued their success at the NCAA Championshipswhere they finished eighth overall, LSU's best finish at the nationalchampionships in over five years. In addition, Breaux guided NickiArnstad to LSU's first individual NCAA Championship in modern histo-ry, as Arnstad won the floor exercise with a stunning 9.950 perform-ance.
Aside from athletic honors, Breaux excels in recruiting quality stu-dent-athletes from Louisiana as well as across the continent, havingrecruited some of the top Canadian athletes of all time. A Louisiananthrough and through, Breaux concentrates her recruiting efforts righthere in her native state, as well as at the national and internationallevels.
Outside of the gym, Breaux has taken an active role in the aca-demic success her program has achieved in her 28 seasons at LSU. Bymaking academic success her team's No. 1 priority, Breaux's teamshave reached the highest scholastic goals she has established over thepast decade. Throughout the country, she is acknowledged as havingone of the finest academic teams year in and year out. LSU gymnasts
have been named Academic All-Americans 77 times and members ofthe SEC Academic Honor Roll on 98 occasions since 1991. During the2003 season, a school-record 13 of Breaux's student-athletes werenamed to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, an honor reserved for sopho-mores, juniors and seniors. In 1999, the Tigers posted the third-high-est GPA in the nation and the highest of any team in the NCAAChampionship field.
Also active members of the local community, Breaux and herteam continually participate in volunteer activities throughout theBaton Rouge area. In 2005, the team was awarded LSU's CHAMPSCommunity Service Award after logging over 400 hours of communityservice. Breaux, who is serving as the 2005 Chairman of the YWCA'sPink Ribbon Campaign for Breast Cancer, and her team have also vol-unteered their time to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, St.Jude's Hospital and the Red Cross among others.
Inside the gym, Breaux's Tigers have placed among the nation'stop-12 teams 20 times in her 28 seasons, finishing fourth in 1988,sixth in '80, '83, and '90, seventh in '87, '91, '93, and '04, eighth in'94 and '02, ninth in '78, '86, '95, '98, '99, '00 and '05, 10th in '03,11th in '79 and '81, and 12th in 1997.
LSU has also placed among the top three in regional competitionon 20 separate occasions, winning regional titles in 1978, 1979, 1980,1986, 2002, 2004 and 2005. Her teams have included two nationalchampions, 27 All-Americans and 27 All-SEC selections.

It is this delicate balance between exceptional academics and ath-letic excellence that has allowed Breaux to keep her team at the topof the national scene year in and year out.
