As a result, the 2017 Year 3 and 5 students will participate in an online readiness test during the week of September 4, allowing for the students, and teachers to become familiar with the online testing environment and the test platform before its implementation next year. The Readiness test will consist of two online assessments: a writing assessment and a combination literacy/numeracy composite assessment. The duration of each assessment will be approximately 40 minutes. http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online

SASS Recognition Week The 4 September – 8 September is School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff Recognition Week. This is an opportunity for the whole school community to recognise and thank our amazing SAS staff for the important work they do for our students and community. SAS staff includes our front office School Administrative staff, our General Assistants, and our Student Learning Support Officers (or “teachers’ aides”). Our SAS staff are the “heart” of our school, ensuring that each day runs smoothly. We are fortunate and privileged to have a large team of non-teaching staff who are vital to the successful operation of our school. We would like to extend our thanks to; Mrs Newton, Mrs Arundel, Mrs Smith, Mrs Jeske, Mrs Wardell, Mrs Langley, Ms Murphy, Mrs McDonald, Mr Charters, Mrs Finadri, Ms Baldin, Mrs Sarina, Mr Laing, Mr Gerardis and Miss Arundel. Public Speaking On Monday 28 August 2017, the Stage 2 and 3 public speaking finalists represented Riverbank at the Hills Public Speaking competition. Mia and Zoe from Stage 2 and Mia and Zeynep from Stage 3 proudly represented our school. The students were required to present their prepared speech, followed by an impromptu speech. On the lead up to the semi finals, Mrs Neldner and Mrs Redman helped the students prepare and practice their presentation skills. The quality of the speeches from all competitors were of a high standard. We are proud to announce that Mia from Stage 3 was chosen to progress to the finals. Congratulations to these wonderful students!

Student Achievement Last weekend Connor from 3/4W entered a Martial Arts competition and received first place in Tricking and Flying Side Kick! Connor was thrilled with his results and is looking forward to many future competitions. An awesome achievement!

Moksh (1/2B) participated in the 'Winter State Level Gymnastic Team Competition" held on Sunday 27 August at Rooty Hill Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre in Under 7 Level 2 category. There were teams from all around NSW. Out of the six apparatus, Moksh received gold in Rings, High bar, Parallel bar; Silver medal in Floor and Bronze medal in Vault. The team came overall 1st, received a gold, and named NSW Winter State champions 2017. What an awesome achievement!

Circus Berserkus

Annual Walk-a-Thon On Thursday 12 October, we will once again hold our annual Walk-a-Thon to raise money for technology. Sponsor cards will be sent home next week. The school holidays are a perfect time for students to seek the support of donations from family members. Finally Don’t forget to wear your footy colours and jersey this Friday as we raise awareness for Footy Colours Day and Jersey Day. Have a wonderful fortnight, Jeanie Brown Principal

MESSAGE from the DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Absences and Partial Absence Occasionally, we understand that circumstances occur that make children run late for school. These children MUST be taken to the front office by a parent to complete a ‘Partial Attendance’ for our records. Repeated ‘Partial Attendances’ will be scrutinised and if they continue the Home School Liaison Officer will become involved. If your child is absent for any reason from school, could you please ensure that a note is provided stating the date and reason for that absence. This is a legal responsibility and is closely monitored by the Department. An explanation of absence is required within 7 days. If the school has not received a note outlining a reason for the absence, a reminder letter will be sent home after 7 days. If no explanation is received, the school will ring or refer the absence/s to the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO). Safety at 3:00pm

Each afternoon I am surprised by the large amount of parents who are willing to break the law when picking up their children and even more surprised when they compromise the safety of their own children for the sake of a few minutes. Whilst I understand that traffic congestion at the front of the school is a mitigating factor when picking up your children, it is still no excuse to break the law or put your child’s safety in jeopardy. I have witnessed parents double parking whilst waiting for their child, this is not only dangerous but selfish as it blocks the road for motorists who wish to continue driving down Wentworth Street. Parents who stop their car and double park and call their child to hop in the car are a major concern. The child has to walk between cars to get to their own car, which can cause an accident or put the child’s safety at risk. I am concerned by the large amount of parents who DO NOT cross at the pedestrian crossing and prefer to cross on the right hand side of the front gate. This means crossing in-between parked cars and often stopping traffic in order to get across the road. Unfortunately, not all cars will stop in this situation and I have witnessed many narrow escapes. Please make safety your first priority when picking up your children in the afternoon and ensure that you obey all road rules to make Riverbank a safe place. Parent Portal The Parent Portal is added to on a regular basis. This week I have added a module where parents who have students in Years 3 and 5 can examine their child’s NAPLAN results. You are able to have a look and print off your child’s last report and examine attendance data. Tell Them From Me Parent Survey NOW OPEN The Partners in Learning parent survey is part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between parent and school. The survey is designed to measure, assess and report insights from the parent point of view at the school and system levels. The focus of this NSW survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The surveys will be conducted in all participating schools between Monday 28 August (Week 7, Term 3) and Friday 13 October 2017 (Week 1, Term 4).

The Survey for Riverbank’s Parents will be open from Monday August 28 until the end of Term. If you would like to complete the survey use the link below. https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/trbg5 Tell Them From Me Student Survey As in Term 1, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student Feedback Survey II. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students in Years 4-6 to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. The survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between September 11th to October 13th.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, and a consent form has been sent home with students – if you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Friday September 8th. A set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from the website provided

Restorative Practices Restorative Practices form the relational basis for Quality Teaching and Learning at Riverbank Public School. Our Restorative Practice Framework, because of its explicit nature, offers a common language and practice capable of fostering healthy relationships. Student achievement is enhanced through Restorative values being embedded as a way of being and learning together. Our approach fosters individual responsibility and helps develop empathy. Inappropriate behaviour or choices and mistakes can be viewed as an opportunity for insight, learning and development in both the academic and social domains. The explicit framework is inextricably linked to the Quality Teaching Framework and includes the following sets of questions to be asked by children, teachers and parents. When Things Go Wrong…..When Someone Has Been Hurt • What happened? • What were you thinking of at the time? • What have you thought about since? • Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? • What do you think you may do to make things right? • What did you think when you realised what happened? • What impact has this incident had on you and others? • What has been the hardest thing for you? • What do you think needs to happen to make things right?

The process is empowering as it takes students from the past to the present and gives them hope for the future. It empowers them to make things right and heal any harm that has been done. A restorative classroom setting is one that values dialogue through an inclusive approach where everyone expects to be heard and through this participatory process students develop the capacity to learn that emotions are an important and legitimate expression of healthy dialogue. This process helps students to deal with conflict, tensions and difference in respectful ways that engender trust and foster healthy relationships. Our school rules incorporate the ‘Help Increase the Peace Keys’ to promote a harmonious, nurturing and challenging living and learning environment.

Flu Season – staying healthy Flu season is unfortunately upon us and the school is doing its best to keep our children healthy. We ask for your support in reinforcing key hygiene messages at home. You might also like to consult your own doctor about whether flu vaccination is recommended for your child. Some things the school is doing in this area include:

• Hand sanitiser pumps have been installed in every classroom • Deodorisers will be installed in toilet blocks • Classroom hygiene routines re-established and teachers communicating with students

about key hygiene messages (e.g. hand washing/sanitising before and after eating and playing; remembering to sneeze into one’s elbow)

• Posters reinforcing hand-washing best practice and other hygiene messaging will be installed in each toilet block.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN Thank you to everyone for shopping at Woolworths and collecting the stickers. We have 272 sheets at last count. The program runs until Tuesday 19 September, which is only a few weeks away. Keep sending in your completed sheets and any stickers you collect. Remember only to stick them in the boxes on the sheets. This year we are hoping to collect more sheets than our first year in which we collected 517 sheets. So keep collecting and bringing in your sheets.

Walk-a-thon – Trek for Tech 2017 On Thursday the 12 October, Riverbank Public School will be holding our third annual Walk-a-thon. Students will be dressing up and will participate in this fun event with their peers, whilst also raising money for our wonderful school. Parents are always welcome to come along and walk with their children on hopefully, a beautiful and sunny day!

We are continuing the theme of ‘Trek for Tech’ this year. It was so successful last year, raising over $13,000 for the school. So, to keep up with our expanding need for technology, we will aim to raise even more money this year.

Over the next few weeks sponsor cards will be given to each student. There are some fabulous prizes that could be won by getting out there, being active and receiving donations from friends or family! Prizes will be showcased at each Monday morning assembly and handed out in Term 4 after the Walkathon.

We really appreciate active participation and thank you for supporting our school to raise money for technology. Students are encouraged to start bringing in their donations at the beginning of Term 4 to be in the running to win fabulous prizes!

Ben Cain Sports Organiser PSSA TERM 3 Week 6 Round 13 Newcombe Ball Riverbank PS vs Boys Lost Team Player – Shan Best and Fairest - Navpreet Seniors Lost Team Player – Shivanna Best and Fairest – Georgia Both teams started off a little cold and struggled through the first set. Fortunately, by the second set, we came to play and thanks to some outstanding serves by Anthony and Georgia we were able to keep the set competitive. The teams put on great displays of teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done both teams for a very enjoyable season. It has been very rewarding as a coach to see you work together to improve as the season has progressed!

Netball Ball Riverbank PS vs Rouse Hill PS Juniors Lost 1-8 Team Player – Deeya Best and Fairest - Rupali Seniors Won 15-11 Too difficult as all girls played a hard and nail biting game As this was our last game of the season, the juniors blasted onto the court full of beans and with a heap of energy. Zeynep, Morgan and Deeya were called into action early to defend against a rapidly moving opposition who were keen for a win. Jorja supported our defenders well as centre in the first half. Angelica followed up as centre in the second half, showing stamina and perseverance in such a fast-paced game. Shivalni and Arya worked hard regardless of where they played today and have developed into very capable defenders. Summer and Chaahat provided a couple of good scoring opportunities that we could not capitalise on until Zeynep was GA. Players vote goes to Deeya who consistently works hard while the coach’s award went to Rupali who is willing and able to work at any position. If the junior game was fast-paced, then the senior game was a massive blur. Our seniors were visibly pumped this week and unwilling to let the season end without a win. They tore onto the court and rampaged up to score a couple of quick goals that caught the opposition by surprise. Laura and Tahli had their eye on the goal and were able to shoot from just about anywhere. Ebonnee was spectacular as centre shutting down her opposition with great ease. Playing in wing positions this week were Natalya, Sophie, Trinity and Arya who amazed the crowd with their intercepts, sharp throws and vigilant attacks. Tamara and Caitlyn were unwilling to be out shone in their pivotal defence positions so shut down a plethora of goal attempts by their opposite players. To say this game was nail biting is an absolute understatement. Our opposition kept coming at us but our wonderful girls held strong and persisted to maintain the lead. It was a spectacular and well-deserved win. During this season, it has been a pleasure working with Mrs Smith to develop our netball teams. I thank her and each girl for their dedication to the game and team.

Soccer - Boys Riverbank PS vs Parklea PS Juniors Won 3-1 Team Player – Lachlan Best and Fairest – Marvin & Gurshaan Seniors Won 3-0 Team Player – Supreet Best and Fairest – Ahyan & Jagandeep What a way to end an excellent season of Winter PSSA. Both teams played well with wonderful teamwork and sportsmanship on display. Junior boys were tested at the beginning of the match with Parklea scoring the first goal, however, they fought back and went onto win 3-1 with 2 well placed goals by Lachlan. A stellar year from the seniors where they finished 3rd overall and only 1 point behind Kellyville Ridge. Our best season yet. Well done boys for your commitment to weekly training and fantastic sportsmanship. You have made Riverbank proud. Soccer - Girls Riverbank PS vs Ironbark Ridge PS Juniors Lost 0-3 Team Player – Charlie Best and Fairest – Swathi Seniors Lost 0-4 Team Player – Mia Best and Fairest – Alyssa The last game of the winter PSSA and both the seniors and juniors again gave it their all. All the girls are to be congratulated on their efforts all season. They have certainly improved and continued to play as a team despite playing some very talented opposition.

CARES Excursion 3/4A and 2-6H had an excellent day at their CARES excursion last Thursday. The students started the day learning about road safety theory. Students then participated in a skills course that focused on balance and emergency braking. The day finished with the students riding around the simulated roads that included working traffic lights, roundabouts and road signs. Students who didn’t follow road rules correctly lost demerit points off their licences. It was a lot of fun watching the students try and follow all road rules with the roundabouts causing some problems with which direction to ride around. Thank you to Mr Quan for attending our excursion as a helper. Officer Raney and Jason were fantastic and the remaining Stage 2 classes have a lot to look forward to.

Book Week and Jacqueline Harvey Visit On Wednesday 23rd August Riverbank celebrated Book Week. Thank you to everyone who helped make our celebrations so much fun and such a success! Our author visit from Jacqueline Harvey was fantastic. The students loved hearing all about being an author and the extremely funny stories she told. She shared with us all about her two bestselling series’, Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose. Jacqueline was very impressed with our students and loved coming to visit us here at Riverbank. Special thanks to the awesome staff members and students of Riverbank who went to the most amazing lengths to dress up as book characters for our special day.
