I would/would not like to grow dragons because …….
Listen to the story on Youtube or ask your grown-up to read it to you.
Activity 2 and 3 - Read
As this book has an introduction, you may want to read this over two days.
Read the story using the PDF on the Y2 home learning page. Then clarify these words and phrases.
singe daft
fantastical dazzling
flammable desperados
gooseberry ‘multi-topping’ ‘the Amazon’
overlord upturned bizarrely
bioluminescence vivid
Activity 3 - Answer the questions
1. What other problems do you think having a dragon might cause? What would be the upside to having your very own dragon?
2. What does Grandad want to grow in the garden? 3. Why does the boy describe going to his grandad’s garden ‘a trip to
the Amazon’? 4. What is grandad’s nickname for the boy? 5. Find the verbs that describe how the boy works in the garden? 6. How does the boy find information about the strange fruit he has
found?
Activity 4 - Retell and predict
Retell the story so far to your grown-up - can you remember what happened?
Draw, write or explain what you think will happen to the dragon fruit.
Watch ‘How to take a castle’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNeNPk4D_Ng
Today we are going to plan a non-chronological report about how to attack a castle. A non-chronological report is a report that can be written in any order (apart from the introduction and ending) Use the planning sheet or write your plan on a piece of paper, Here is my example plan.
Challenge: Can you use bullet points to help you remember the main points of what you want to write?
Activity 2
Write your non-chronological report. Read my example report. Read through your planning sheet then use it to write your non-chorological report - each time you start writing a new section leave a line.
Challenge: Can you use subheadings for each method of attacking the castle?
Activity 3
Watch and read with your grown-up - you may need to pause it as it goes quite fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLiapfC8XXU
Today we are going to plan a non-chronological report about how to defend a castle. Use the planning sheet or write your plan on a piece of paper.
Challenge: Can you use an exclamation mark in your ending?
Activity 4
Write your non-chronological report Look back at my example non-chorological report for how to attack a castle. Read through your planning sheet then use it to write your report.
Remember each time you start writing a new section leave a line.
Challenge: Can you add a diagram (a picture with labels) at the bottom of your report to show one of your methods of defending a castle?
We’d love to see what you have been doing so tweet us @Y2Carfield.

How to attack a castle
Are you fed-up of struggling to capture your enemy’s castle? If so, do not
despair, read on and you will soon learn the most effective ways to attack
their castle.
Battering ram
A battering ram is a large tree trunk with metal point or plate on the end.
It is a heavy piece of equipment and will take at least 10 men to use it.
When you are ready, move the battering ram up to your enemy’s castle
door and swing it with all your might. After a while the strong, wooden
door will be knocked off its hinges and you will be able to get inside.
Digging a tunnel
Digging a tunnel is a very effective way to get into your enemy’s castle if
you do it in the right place. The best place to dig is under one of the
castle’s towers. As you dig the tunnel use strong, wooden support beams
to hold it up. Once the tunnel is finished, set the wooden beams alight and
the tunnel will collapse and so will the castle wall!
A catapult
A battering ram is a super way of attacking a castle. You can use a catapult
to fling all kinds of nasty things over the castle walls. Fire can be used to
set the enemy’s castle alight or you can use stones which will damage the
castle walls or even hurt your enemies. You can also send more disgusting
things over such as rotting animals!
A final note of warning
When you go to attack a castle, make sure you wear your best armour as
your enemy will try their best to stop you capturing their castle.

There is a video to watch for each task - take your time and check each answer before you move onto the next. If you can’t (or don’t want) to print out the sheets for each day, just write the answers on a sheet of paper.

Extra Activities (if you want to do more):
Use a book, ask your grown-up or search the internet to find the answers to these questions. You may wish to write or draw you answers or you could just
talk about them.
