Our mission

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community based organization of volunteers, whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

Cancer Statistics

In 2012:

On average, 3,585 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer every week.

In Ontario:72,300 new cancer cases expected27,900 people will die as a result of having cancer

Who are people living with cancer?

Cancer is a disease that not only affects a person’sphysical well-being, but also their:

• emotional well-being

• spiritual well-being

• social well-being

Cancer is complex and people are complex…therefore people with cancer have complex, interrelated needs.

Who are people living with cancer?

Our term “people living with cancer” includes:

• people who have cancer

• people who have had cancer

• people who are profoundly affected by cancer

• acknowledges there is an inadequate understanding of the effectiveness of unconventional therapies

• advocates & supports scientific research of these therapies

• supports person’s right to choose• encourages informed decision making• recommends consultation with medical team• provides info through the Cancer Information Service

(CIS)

• connect people with a survivor who knows what its like to live with cancer
