Purpose This document provides a guide to setting up the backup process specific to Oracle Database Standard Edition One on Dell servers. The following backup process takes advantage of the new Oracle Database 10g feature; the Flash Recovery Area. The Flash Recovery Area simplifies the management of Oracle Database and improves the speed of backup and recovery processes. For a detailed understanding of Oracle Database 10g backups and Flash Recovery Area, please refer to Oracle Database 10g documentation set. Purpose

This document provides a guide to setting up the backup process specific to OracleDatabase Standard Edition One on Dell servers. The following backup process takesadvantage of the new Oracle Database 10g feature; the Flash Recovery Area. The FlashRecovery Area simplifies the management of Oracle Database and improves the speed ofbackup and recovery processes. For a detailed understanding of Oracle Database 10gbackups and Flash Recovery Area, please refer to Oracle Database 10g documentationset.

There are three main steps to completely set up automatic backups of an Oracle Database

Configuring ARCHIVELOG mode

Configuring ARCHIVELOG modeFirst, confirm that your database's ARCHIVELOG mode is turned on. To do so, followthese steps.

1. Launch the Enterprise Manager Database Console from the Start > Oracle 10g Menu> Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control menu option or remotely via aweb browser.

2. Log in to Enterprise Manager Database Console by opening your browser andspecifying the SYS username and password as SYSDBA. Click Login.

3. If ARCHIVEMODE is enabled during your initial configuration, Archiving will be setto Enabled under the High Availability section of the Oracle Database Home page.

4. If you don't have ARCHIVEMODE enabled, please enable it before proceeding.Launch the Enterprise Manager Database Console from the Start > Oracle 10g Menu> Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control menu option or remotely via aweb browser.

7. Select Configure Recovery Settings in the Backup/Recovery section. You can usethe Configure Recovery Settings page to configure the settings for the recoveryutility, including the Flash Recovery Area.

8. Check Archive Log Mode to configure ARCHIVELOG mode for your database.Click Apply.

9. A message confirming your changes is displayed. To complete the configuration ofARCHIVELOG mode, the database instance must be shut down. Click Yes to shutdown the instance and restart it.

10.The Restart Database:Specify Host and Target Database Credentials page isdisplayed. Enter your host credentials and database credentials. Click OK.

11.The Restart Database:Confirmation page is displayed. Click Yes to shutdown theinstance and restart it.

12.The Restart Database:Activity Information page is displayed. Click Refresh to login to Enterprise Manager Database Control.

Configuring the Flash Recovery Area

1. Launch the Enterprise Manager Database Console from the Start > Oracle 10g Menu> Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control menu option or remotely via aweb browser.

specifying the SYS username and password as SYSDBA. Click Login.

3. In order to properly set up the database to use the Flash Recovery Area clickAdministration on your Oracle Database Home page.

NOTE: Archiving will be set to Enabled under the High Availability section of theOracle Database Home page if it was configured initially with ARCHIVELOG modeon.

4. Click All Initialization Parameters.

5. Scroll down to log_archive_dest_1, remove the string valueLOCATION=+DATADG/orcl10g, then click Apply.

6. An Update Message screen appears stating The changes have been madesuccessfully.

7. Click SPFile.

8. Scroll down to log_archive_dest_1, remove the string valueLOCATION=+DATADG/orcl10g, then click Apply.

9. An Update Message screen appears stating The changes have been madesuccessfully. Then click Database:orcl10g to take you back to the main EMinterface.

10. In order to determine the amount of physical space available for the Flash RecoveryArea, click +ASM on your Oracle Database Home page.

11.Click Administration and log in specifying the SYS username and password asSYSDBA. Click Login.

12.Click RECOVERDG. The value for RECOVERDG in the SIZE (MB) column isthe size of the Flash Recovery Area.

NOTE: It is recommended that this formula is used to compute the space to be used forthe Flash Recovery Area:

Flash Recovery Area = RECOVERDG – 5M

13.Click Maintenance on your Oracle Database Home page.

14.Select Configure Recovery Settings in the Backup/Recovery section. You can usethe Configure Recovery Settings page to configure the settings for the recoveryutility, including the Flash Recovery Area.

15.The Configure Recovery Settings page appears. Scroll to the Flash Recovery Areasection. Configure the flash recovery area by entering the following value in theappropriate fields:

Flash Recovery Area Location: <+RECOVERDG>

Flash Recovery Area Size: <enter the value from Step X here>

16.Scroll up to the top of the window. Click Apply. A message confirming your changesis displayed.

Configuring Backup Settings and Policies

You can configure a number of settings and policies that determine how backups arestored, which data is backed up, how backups perform, and how long backups areretained before being purged from the recovery area. You can also configure features toimprove backup performance.

1. Click Maintenance on your Oracle Database Home page.

2. Select Configure Backup Settings in the Backup/Recovery region.

3. Scroll to the Host Credentials region on the Configure Backup Settings page. Enterthe operating system username and password. Scroll up to the Disk Settings section.

4. The Disk Backup Location field is set to null so that the flash recovery area will beused for backups. Select Image Copy for Disk Backup Type. Click Test DiskBackup.

5. A message is displayed indicating the disk settings backup test was successful. Nowyou will configure backup policy settings. Click Policy to access the Policy page.

6. Select Automatically backup the control file and server parameter file (SPFILE)with every backup and database structural change. Select Optimize the wholedatabase backup by skipping unchanged files such as read-only and offlinedatafiles that have been backed up. Then scroll down to the Retention Policysection.

7. Select Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery to any time within thespecified number of days (point-in-time recovery) and accept the default of 31 days.Click OK. You are returned to the Maintenance page.

Performing a Whole Database Backup

You can back up the entire contents of your database by performing a whole databasebackup. Full backups of all datafiles are created. The results may be stored as imagecopies or as backup sets, but in either case the complete contents of all datafiles of thedatabase are represented in the backup, as well as the control file, archived redo log andserver parameter file. The database can be recovered completely with this set of files.

1. Select Schedule Backup in the Backup/Recovery region.

2. The Schedule Backup: Strategy page appears. Select Customized from the BackupStrategy drop-down menu. Select Whole Database and enter the username andpassword in the Host Credentials section if required. Click Next.

3. The Schedule Backup: Options page appears. Select Full Backup in the BackupType section. Select Online Backup in the Backup Mode section. Select Back up allarchived logs on disk in the Advanced section. Click Next.

4. The Schedule Backup: Settings page appears. Select Disk or Tape as appropriate.Click Next.

5. The Schedule Backup: Schedule page appears. Accept the default Job Name. SelectImmediately to execute the job immediately or enter a time to execute at a later time.Click Next.

6. The Schedule Backup: Review page appears. Click Submit Job.

7. The Backup Submit Successful message is displayed. Click OK.

Backing Up Your Database Using the Oracle-Suggested Backup Strategy

The Oracle-suggested backup strategy is based on creating an image copy of yourdatabase which is rolled forward using RMAN incremental backups. Oracle EnterpriseManager schedules RMAN backup jobs. Follow the steps below to set up your backupschedule:

1. Select Schedule Backup in the Backup/Recovery region.

2. The Schedule Backup: Strategy page appears. Select Oracle-suggested from theBackup Strategy drop-down menu. Select Disk under Select your backup destination.Enter your operating system username and password in the Host Credentials section.Click Next .

3. The Schedule Backup: Setup page appears. Review the information and click Next.

4. The Schedule Backup: Schedule page appears. Review the information and adjust thestart date and time as appropriate. Click Next.

5. The Schedule Backup: Review page appears. Review the information and clickSubmit Job.

6. The Status page appears with a message indicating the job has been successfullysubmitted. You can click View Job to access the job status page or click OK tocomplete the operation.
