De Provence, the first wine tasted, comes from a region in France where native grapes are grown in an ideal Mediterranean climate. It is a Blanc de Blancs wine with a subtle sweetness, excellent acidity, and un-matched scent and taste qualities.

The Chef, who graduated from the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana, prepared an organic toma-to, peppermint pesto, and pump-kin seed Provoletta for the opening wine.

The second tasting featured Ban-dol, a strongly flavored fresh rosé wine with a touch of astringency. For pairing, a chipotle-and-coco-nut covered shrimp snack was pre-pared. This treat was elaborated using a Japanese technique, where the popular crustacean is cooked with a little vinegar, sugar, and salt. Chef Bossuet employed a fusion of techniques, ingredients, and expe-riences acquired at the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, in France.

For the third tasting, it was time for a wine from the Beaucastel house, finely specialized with intense fruit content. The pairing was a Pro-sciutto taco with avocado in a corn tortilla. The experienced Chef, win-ner of the TURQUOIS Foundation Scholarship, successfully blended three different flavors obtained from ham, avocado, and corn fats.

En la tercera cata tocó el turno a un vino de la casa Beaucastel de fina especialización, con una carga frutal intensa. El maridaje fue un taquito de Jamón Serrano con aguacate y tortilla. El experimentado chef ga-nador de la beca de la Fundación TURQUOIS logró con este platillo la unión de tres grasas diferentes con el jamón, el aguacate y el aceite del maíz al freir las tortilla.

Nuestro país es el número 20 en el mun-do en recepción de Turismo de Reuniones con un mercado de 18.1 mil millones de dólares, el cual genera más de 783 mil 700 fuentes de empleos y represen-ta el 1.4 por ciento del Producto Interno Bruto nacional.

Ex Hacienda de San Roque

onsultando al experto en Turismo Arturo Morales Tirado sobre lugares interesantes para practicar Ciclismo de Montaña, nos sugirió un lugar muy singular en San Miguel de Allende. Le to-mamos una vez más la palabra y quedamos maravillados con la Ex Hacienda de San Roque.

la ex Hacienda de San Roque tiene una característica única. esta finca está construida encima de otra exac-tamente igual. en México estamos acostumbrados a ver templos católi-cos sobre ruinas prehispánicas, pero resulta extraño ver el casco de una hacienda arriba de otro.

la razón por la cual se construyó un edificio encima de otro fue una de-vastadora inundación. al quedar la finca original ocultada por el agua y el lodo, su propietario decidió le-vantar una idéntica a la inundada partiendo de su azotea. esto logró colocar la nueva construcción a una altura en la cual ya no se inunda, sin embargo el resto de la propiedad se llena de agua con las torrenciales lluvias y el área del casco se con-vierte en una isla, para llegar a ella en épocas de fuertes lluvias se ne-cesitan balsas.

en este bello lugar hay nuevas rutas para Ciclismo de Montaña. los reco-rridos pueden ser en el mismo sitio, con dirección a atotonilco y también hacia a dolores Hidalgo.

La Ex Hacienda de San Roque tiene una característica única. Esta finca está construida encima de otra exactamente igual.

a la antigua estación de ferrocarril, cruza las vías y al llegar a la segunda curva con toda precaución sigue de frente. encontrarás un camino con árboles enlazados que te llevará hasta la ex Hacienda de San Roque.

ex Hacienda San Roque has one dis-tinct characteristic. This old manor is built right on top of another, older one. we are used to seeing Catholic temples built on top of pre-hispanic ruins in Mexico, but seeing a haci-enda built on top of another one is really something unusual.

The reason it was constructed this way was a devastating flood. as the original manor was under many feet of mud and water, its owner decided to erect a new one taking the roof of the old one as the starting point,

This beautiful place offers new routes for Mountain Biking. You can stay within the property or head to-wards atotonilco or dolores Hidalgo. You´ll be able to find a river with her-ons, Canadian ducks, pelicans, and other bird species along the way.

arriving to ex Hacienda de San Roque from downtown San Miguel is easy. Take Canal Street all the way down to the old train station, go across the tracks, and keep going straight until you reach the second curve. There you’ll find a trail of inter-twined trees that will take you up to ex Hacienda San Roque.

onversando con Al-berto González Valdéz, experto en Ciclismo de Montaña nos explica sobre la modalidad Cross Coun-try. Esta disciplina consiste en dos formatos de competencia, la cross country XCO y el maratón cross country XCM. Ésta última se rea-liza en distancias largas de 40 a 100 kilómetros y la primera son tramos cortos de hasta 11 km con dificultad extrema.

del 9 al 10 de febrero se celebrará el torneo estatal de Cross Country en Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato. en este lugar fue celebrado el tor-neo nacional en 2012 y el evento fue todo un éxito. Purísima del Rincón se consolida cada vez más como desti-no para Ciclismo de Montaña, pare-ciera un municipio creado para este deporte por su constitución orográfi-ca, la cual es una franja accidentada en forma de media luna que va des-de el norte al oeste y suroeste en la formación conocida como Sierra de la Comanja. Una gran parte de esta cadena montañosa se encuentra dentro del pueblo, lo cual hace los recorridos más atractivos.

uring a conversation with Mountain Biking expert Alber-to González Valdéz, he explained all about Cross Country competi-tions. Two different race formats make up this discipline: XCO cross country and XCM cross country marathon. Distances go from 40 to 100 kilometers in length for the last one mentioned, and short stretches of up to 11 kilometers with an extreme level of difficulty for the first one.

The Cross Country State Competi-tion event will be held on February 9th and 10th, at Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, a place that is becoming a preferred destination for Mountain Biking. The 2012 event, which was a great success, was celebrated at this same location. Purísima del Rincón would seem to have been purposely

created for the practice of this sport, owing to its hilly topography, where an uneven crescent-shaped stretch known as Sierra de la Comanja runs north to west and southwest. The town is built over a great part of this mountain range, making the rides more attractive.

On Friday January 4th, Galería Arte Contemporáneo (Gallery of Contem-porary Art) celebrated its 2nd anni-versary with a show of breathtaking artistic quality. Nineteen masters of the national plastic arts made a great success out of the opening night. The quality of the works shown caught the attention of national media. Esta afamada artista que nació en la Ciudad de México, cursó una licenciatura en Artes Plásticas en Uni-versidad Iberoamericana. Su tiempo lo dividía entre su carrera profesional y sus diversos talleres en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas “La Esme-ralda”. En este centro cultural trabajó con el Maestro E. Coghlan.

Gogy ha expuesto su obra en más de veinte ocasiones en diferentes ciuda-des de México y el mundo entre las que destacan, París, Nueva York, Nueva Jersey, Florida, La Haya, Roma, Barce-lona, Madrid, Varsovia y Hungría.

El trabajo en ónix de Gogy ha sido reconocido internacionalmente. Sus grabados logran notoriedad en el “Fiest 86” de París, en el cual obtu-vo el segundo lugar con su obra “Del Caos al Cosmos”. En 1993 el Hono-

rable Consejo Consultivo de la Ciudad de México le otorgó un reconocimien-to por su brillante trayectoria.

Gogy domina diversas técnicas y mate-riales. Su vasta obra de figuras religiosas en bronce la han proyectado en todo el mundo con éxito, sin embargo también ha trabajado con éxito el mármol, la porcelana, la madera y diversas piedras.

Las colecciones entre las que Gogy di-vide su obra son: Perfil Mexicano, Mo-numentales, Religiosas, Homenaje al Árbol, Del Caos al Cosmos y Caballos.En la tercera sección del Bosque de Chapultepec de la Ciudad de México, se encuentra su obra “La Familia”. Esta obra fue donada por Fomento Cultural Banamex, en 1980.

En el 2011 Gogy estuvo en Baltimo-re promocionando su obra. En Gale-

ca artista mexicana.

You can now admire the sculpture “Thinker” by Gogy Farías at Atenea Gallery. This famed artist, who was born in Mexico City, got her bachelor´s degree in Plastic Arts from the Univer-sidad Iberoamericana. Her time was then divided between her profession-al career and numerous workshops at the National School of Plastic Arts “La Esmeralda”. It was at this cultural hub where she worked with Maestro E. Coghlan.

Gogy has shown her work on more than 20 occasions in different cit-ies and places in Mexico and around the world. Among them, Paris, New York, New Jersey, Florida, The Hague, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Warsaw, and Hungary, are worth a special mention.

Gogy´s work in Onyx has been rec-ognized internationally. Her engrav-ings gained notoriety at the Paris “Fi-est 86”, where she won second place with her piece “From Chaos to Cos-mos”. In 1993, she was bestowed with an achievement award for a brilliant career by the Honorable Consulting Council of Mexico City.

Gogy has mastered numerous tech-niques and materials. Her vast work of bronze religious figures has projected her successfully throughout the world; however, she has also done great work with marble, porcelain, wood, and as-sorted stones.

Gogy´s work is divided into the fol-lowing collections: Mexican Profile, Monumental, Religious, Homage to the Tree, From Chaos to Cosmos, and Horses. “The Family” is one of her works donated by Fomento Cultural Banamex in 1980, and is now located in the third section of the Chapultepec Park in Mexico City.

Gogy was in Baltimore promoting her work in 2011. Atenea Gallery is where you can admire more pieces by this successfully prolific Mexican artist.

Al llegar Federico Correa a San Miguel de Allende hace casi diez años, quedó maravillado con las bodas realizadas en esta ciudad. El artista nunca había visto tantas bo-das y de tal magnitud. Correa per-cibía la alegría en las calles de esos días, el ánimo de los novios y sus invitados contagiaba el ambiente por las tardes y las noches.

La emoción de las mujeres en sus nupcias inspiró a Correa a realizar esta obra, en la cual se aprecia una novia y un toro en un escenario fes-tivo. Esta fue la primera creación del pintor en San Miguel.

Correa captó a su llegada una de las tradiciones más pintorescas de San Miguel de Allende, la cual con-siste en grandes festividades matri-moniales. Por ello denominó a esta pintura de gran escala “Novia”.

Quizá Correa plasmó un toro por la tradición taurina de la región. Al decir del autor, este detalle ha des-pertado un comentario constante

entre la mayoría de los mexicanos que aprecian esta obra. En tono de broma los espectadores na-cionales dicen que podría ser un novio a quien le “pusieron los cuernos”.

En todo caso, el artis-ta capta en esta obra su percepción de un día fantástico, donde la felicidad reina en-tre los recién casados.

Upon his arrival to San Miguel de Allende almost 10 years ago, Federico Correa became mar-veled at the weddings that take place in this city. The artist had never seen as many, or as grand. Correa could sense a feeling of happiness in the streets in those days, as well as the high spirits of the newlyweds and their guests which would spread through the atmosphere in the afternoons and evenings.

The excitement of a bride-to-be on her wedding day inspired Correa to create this piece in which a bride and a bull can be observed in a fes-tive setting. This was the painter’s first creation in San Miguel.

Correa captured one of the most picturesque traditions in San Miguel de Allende, which consists of great wedding celebrations. Because of that, he named the large-scale oil painting “Bride”.

Perhaps Correa depicted a bull due to a long bullfighting tradition in this region. In the author’s opinion, this small detail has inspired a con-stant comment by most Mexicans who admire this work of art. Jok-ingly, they refer to the groom as the one who “had horns put on”, which is local slang for “was cheated on”.

Either way, the artist captures his perception of a wonderful day where happiness is all around the newlyweds in a truly remarkable work of art.

El teatro Benito Juárez de Gua-najuato, el Teatro de la Repú-blica de Querétaro y el Teatro Ángela Peralta en San Miguel de Allende, son un trío de belle-zas arquitectónicas que arropan entre sus paredes sublimes y desgarradores recuerdos de la historia de México. Para dar una idea previa de la carga histórica de estas obras monumentales, podemos mencionar algunos apellidos: Habsburgo, Juárez, Díaz, Madero y Carranza.

Mucho se ha escrito sobre la arquitectura de estos bellos monumentos, en esta edición hablaremos brevemente sobre algunos detalles registrados por la historia nacional, en torno a estas obras colosales.

The Benito Juárez Theater in Guanajuato, the Theater of the Republic in Querétaro, and the Ángela Peralta Theater in San Miguel de Allende, are a mar-velous trio of beauties that har-bor sublime and tearing mem-ories within their walls. To get an idea of the historical burden these monumental edifices carry, we can mention a few last names: Hapsburg, Juárez, Díaz, Madero, and Carranza.

Much has been written about the architecture of these beautiful monuments. In this issue, we shall briefly discuss a few of the details that have been recorded in national his-tory around these colossal buildings.

EATROn el año 1867 tras la caída de Maximiliano de Habsburgo, se inicia la restauración de la vida republicana en México. El ge-

neral Florencio Antillón al vencer a los conservadores en Guanajuato, es designado gobernador del estado. una de las gestiones más destaca-das de Antillón como titular del eje-cutivo en Guanajuato, fue ordenar al arquitecto José María Noriega la construcción del Teatro Juárez.

Florencio Antillón mantuvo el poder hasta el mes de enero de 1877 al ser vencido por los seguidores de Porfi-rio Díaz. Muerto Juárez en 1872 la lucha por el poder volvió, esta vez los juaristas perdían terreno. La cons-trucción del teatro inicia el mismo año que el Benemérito de las Améri-cas perdiera la vida, su inauguración se da en 1903 en la plenitud del Por-firiato. Por ello la magnificencia de este histórico recinto pudiera repre-sentar la restauración de la república y la opulencia porfiriana.

Porfirio Díaz confió la conclusión del Teatro Juárez al arquitecto An-tonio Rivas Mercado, quien tam-bién se encargaría de hacerle modi-ficaciones finales al diseño original del mítico “Ángel de la Indepen-dencia”. Educado desde joven en Europa, Rivas Mercado sabía dar a las obras arquitectónicas el toque del viejo continente que tanto gus-taba a Don Porfirio. Otro personaje importante en el diseño final del Teatro Juárez fue el ingeniero Al-berto Malo.

En 2003 el Teatro Juárez cumplió sus primeros cien años de vida y en 2012 el Festival Cervantino llegó a cuarenta ediciones, teniendo a este majestuoso lugar como sede del evento inaugural.

El tiempo sigue su curso y mientras avanza, hacemos este breve recuen-to de la historia para recordar el origen del escenario cultural más importante de Guanajuato.

HEATER fter the fall of Maximilian of Hapsburg in 1867, the res-toration of republican life began in Mexico. General

Florencio Antillón was appointed State Governor after defeating the conservative party in Guanajua-to. one of the most outstanding directives of Antillón as the new head of the executive seat was en-trusting architect José María No-riega with the construction of the Juárez Theater.

Florencio Antillón remained in power until January of 1877, when he was ousted by Porfirio Díaz´s fo-llowers. When Juárez died in 1872, the struggle for power made a come-back, with Juaristas losing considera-ble ground to the Porfiristas. Cons-truction of the theater was begun the same year the Father of the Americas lost his life, and it was inaugurated in 1903, right at the peak of the Por-firiato. This is why the magnificence of this historical site could represent the restoration of the Republic and Porfirian opulence.

Porfirio Díaz entrusted the comple-tion of the Juárez Theater to archi-tect Antonio Rivas Mercado, who would also be in charge of the final modifications to the original design of the mythical “Angel of Indepen-dence”. Educated in Europe from a young age, Rivas Mercado knew how to give his architectural crea-tions the Old-Continent touch Don Porfirio was so fond of. Another im-portant figure in the final design of the Juárez Theater was engineer Al-berto Malo.

In 2003, the Juárez Theater cele-brated its first 100th anniversary, and in 2012, the Cervantino Fes-tival reached a 40-year milestone, having this majestic theater host its inaugural event.

Time goes on, and while it does, we rely on this brief historical account to remember the origins of the most important cultural stage in the Sta-te of Guanajuato.

ATA SYMBOL OF ThE REPUBLIC AND PORFIRIAN OPULENCE.

EATROu construcción inició el mes de abril del año 1871 y en 1873 estaba listo para convertirse en el espacio más importante de la vida cultural en San Miguel

de Allende. Hacía falta un nombre para el nuevo teatro y casualmen-te Ángela Peralta se encontraba en Guanajuato. Se acordó homenajear al Ruiseñor Mexicano dándole su nombre al recinto y celebrar con su actuación la esperada apertura.

La cantante que hiciera su debut con El Trovador de Verdi, en el Gran Teatro Nacional a los cator-ce años de edad, aceptó inaugurar y dar su nombre al nuevo teatro de San Miguel de Allende. Al entrar Ángela Peralta a la ciudad, el júbi-lo motivó a la gente a desamarrar los caballos de su diligencia y a tirar ellos mismos el carruaje.

Ángela Peralta nació en una fami-lia de clase media baja, su padre al conocer su extraordinario talento se esforzó por brindarle una ex-celente educación para cultivar su voz y sus conocimientos.

Ángela tuvo como maestro particu-lar a Agustín Balderas, quien como parte del jurado dio por ganadores a Francisco González Bocanegra y a Jaime Nunó, de letra y musicaliza-ción del Himno Nacional Mexicano respectivamente. Con Balderas y su padre Ángela viajó hacia Euro-pa donde entre otros triunfos logró cimbrar al público en la legendaria Scala de Milán.

A su regreso Ángela vivió muy de cerca la lucha constante entre los imperialistas y los liberales. HEATER y the time its construction be-gan in 1871, and ended in 1873, it was already set to become the most important cultural venue in San Miguel de Allende. A

name still had to be chosen for the new theater, and Ángela Peralta just happened to be in Guanajuato at the time. A decision was reached to honor the Mexican Hummingbird by giving the theater her name, and to celebrate its grand opening with her performance.

The singer, who made her debut at age fourteen in Verdi´s ‘Trouba-dour’ at the Great National The-ater, accepted the honor of presid-ing over the opening and lending her name to the new theater in San Miguel de Allende. Upon Ángela Peralta’s highly expected arrival to the town, the eager crowd untied the horses from her stagecoach and began pulling it themselves.

Ángela Peralta was born to a mod-est, lower-middle-class family. When her father found out about her ex-traordinary talent, he made every effort to give her the best possible education in order to nurture her voice and her knowledge.

Ángela had Agustín Balderas as her private instructor, whom as part of the jury, ruled Francisco González Bocanegra and Jaime Nunó as win-ners of the competition to give lyrics and music, respectively, to our Na-tional Anthem. Along with Balderas and her father, Ángela headed to Europe, where among other out-standing appearances, she success-fully moved the audience at the leg-endary Teatro alla Scalla in Milan.

Upon her return, Ángela experi-enced the struggle between the im-perialists and liberals firsthand. To give an example of the grim years lived by Peralta in this land, history recalls that after the Mexican Hum-mingbird’s triumphant perfor-mances, the Theater of the Repub-lic in Querétaro became a trench for General Mariano Escobedo, and a year later, it was turned into the War Coucil’s headquarters, where Maximilian of Hapsburg, Ignacio Miramón, and Tomás Mejía were to be sentenced to death.

EATROn la ciudad de Querétaro, el Teatro de la República fue in-augurado en 1852. Al realizar el diseño y la construcción del

recinto ubicado en la esquina de la avenida Juárez y la calle Ángela Peralta, el arquitecto Camilo San Germán y el ingeniero inglés Tho-mas Surplice, jamás imaginaron que su creación se convertiría en un icono de la historia mexicana.

La noche del 15 de septiembre del año 1854, el Teatro de la República fue colmado por el pueblo quereta-no para escuchar por primera vez el Himno Nacional Mexicano, escrito por el potosino Francisco González Bocanegra y musicalizado por el ca-talán Jaime Nunó.

En 1867 el recinto de sobria ele-gancia fue la sede para Consejo de Guerra que sentenciara a muerte a Maximiliano de Habsburgo y a los generales realistas Miguel Miramón y Tomás Mejía.

El día 27 de noviembre de 1916 se conformó en el Teatro de la Repú-blica, el Congreso Constituyente para promulgar el día 5 de febre-ro de 1917, la Constitución Política Mexicana vigente a hasta nuestros días. En tal ocasión se contó con la presencia del Barón de Cuatro Cié-negas, Coahuila, Don Venustiano Carranza, entonces Presidente de la República.

El generalísimo Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, formularía en el histórico recinto su Plan Sexenal en el año 1933. Es así como el Teatro de la Re-pública se ha convertido desde sus inicios en un destino en sí mismo.

Desde la década de los noventa el mítico teatro es sede de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Querétaro y algunos selectos eventos culturales. Si vas a la capital queretana aquí hay una mag-nífica opción para conocer gran par-te de la historia de nuestra patria.

HEATERhe majestic Teatro de la República was inaugurated in 1852 in the city of Queré-taro. Architect Camilo San

Germán and British engineer Thomas Surplice, never imagined their creation was to become an icon in Mexican history when they designed and built the compound located at the corner of Juárez Av-enue and Ángela Peralta Street.

On the night of September 15th, in 1874, the Teatro de la República was packed by the people of Querétaro, who were there to listen to the Mex-ican National Anthem being played for the first time, its lyrics written by Francisco González Bocanegra and its music by Jaime Nunó, a Catalan by birth.

In 1867, this soberly elegant com-pound served as the location where Maximilian of Hapsburg and royal-ist generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía, were sentenced to death by the War Council.

November 27th, 1916, marked the day when the Constituent Congress first gathered at the Teatro de la República to promulgate the Mexi-can Political Constitution, which was signed on February 5th, 1917. On such an occasion, the Baron of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila, Don Venustiano Carranza, then Presi-dent of the Republic, was present.

This was also the historical place where Generalísimo Lázaro Cárde-nas del Río would elaborate his Presidential Term Plan in 1933. This is how, from its conception, the Teatro de la República has become a destination in its own.

Since the 90’s, this mythical theatre has been home to the Philharmonic Orchestra of Querétaro and other select cultural events. If you go to Queretaro’s Capital City, this is a great option to get to know a great deal of our country´s rich history.

Ya en procesos artesanales o en sis-temas de producción en serie, el fuego pone de manifiesto las palabras del químico Antonie La-vousier “La materia no se crea ni se destruye solo se transforma”.

Hace 500 mil años antes de Cristo, el reto era mantener el fuego encendido. Hoy, el de-safío es apoyar a quienes en nuestro país siguen elaborando sus productos en plena com-petencia de libre mercado. De nosotros depende que el fuego de los productores nacionales siga alumbrando el desarrollo de México.

por hidrocarburos. este producto se encuentra comúnmente como un sólido ceroso de color blanco, ca-rente de olor y sabor. Su punto de fusión oscila entre los 47 y 64 gra-dos centígrados.

Para iniciar el sistema de producción, la pa-rafina es calentada en un recipiente a Baño María donde adquiere un estado líquido, así está lista para recibir a los pabilos por inmersión, los cuales deberán sumergirse en línea recta.

los pabilos se hunden otra vez en la parafina líquida y de esta forma la sustancia adherida a la cuerda pasa de un estado líquido a una consis-tencia cremosa al contacto con la in-

temperie, lo cual empieza a generar un grosor en la futura vela. depen-diendo del número de hundimientos de los pabilos en la parafina, será el grueso de la vela.

el grosor del pabilo es determinan-te para el buen funcionamiento de la futura vela, si es muy delgado no

podrá dar buena luz y si es demasiado grueso tenderá a crear humo y hollín. desde los tiem-pos de la Revolución Industrial nacida en In-glaterra, los procesos artesanales han sido

puestos en riesgo, inclusive los artí-culos industrializados en su totalidad llegaron a ser preferidos sobre los artesanales. Hoy los gustos están cambiando y se avizora un equilibrio.

hese candles are made of paraffin, a petroleum derivate mainly made up of hydro-

carbons. This product is commonly found as a white waxy solid that is void of color or taste. Its melting point oscillates between 47° and 64° Celsius (116° and 147° Fahrenheit).

In order to start the production process, the paraffin is lique-fied in a bain-marie, where it is now ready to receive the wicks by immersion, which must all be lined up in a straight line.

The wicks are immersed again in the liquid paraffin, and the substance ad-hered to the string goes from a liquid to a creamy consistence as it is taken out to dry and immersed once again, adding layers to the future candle.

The thickness of the finished candle will depend on the number of times it is dipped into the paraffin.

The thickness of the wick will have an impact on the performance of the new candle. If it’s too thin, the light won´t shine as bright. If it’s too thick, it will create a lot of smoke and soot.

Michael jackson was launching history´s top selling album, “Thriller”. argentine rock group Soda Stereo was using this name in their first live performance. The former Soviet Union was launching the MIR space station into orbit, and in Spain, the FIFa Soc-cer world Cup had an orange for a mascot, named “Naranjito”.

In the 80’s, Guajuye was established as the first blown glass facto-ry in the central part of Mexico. don javier’s vision led him to set up this company, which is pioneer in sus-tainability and market diversification. Guajuye recycles 3 and-a-half tons of glass bottles each day. 96% of its production is exported throughout the americas, europe and oceania. Before NaFTa and similar treaties were signed, don javier was aware

of the importance of international expansion and not setting all his ex-pectations into only one market.

Guajuye’s sales showed an important spike in the 90’s, and their products held a prevailing spot in many mar-kets around the world. Today, this proud sanmiguelense Mexican com-

pany competes head to head with its coun-terparts from the most industrialized countries in the planet, especially with China.

The owners of Guajuye have shown the same

quality of spirit as their glass pieces to successfully confront open com-petition and the comings and goings of our global economy. There are no limits when there is a vision and an excellent product that allow the best of Mexico to continue treading the world.

Mata ortizLa cerámica rescatada de Paquimé

na de las características úni-cas de esta región es su ce-rámica, la cual se desarrolló

por primera vez en la época prehis-pánica. Hasta hace algunos años era común ver en la zona de Paquimé mucha cerámica tirada. es un miste-rio cual fue la razón de los indígenas para deshabitar esta tierra, con su desaparición también se perdió la técnica para elaborar esta ce-rámica tan singular.

Un joven de nombre juan Quezada llegó a vivir a j. Mata ortiz, un pueblito cercano al área de Paquimé. Su interés por las antiguas expresiones artísticas en aquel lugar le creó una profunda afición por la recolección de objetos de cerámica y un intenso deseo por descubrir el secreto de la cerámica de la ancestral Paquimé.

a base de prueba y error juan llegó a descifrar el método exacto para lograr piezas casi idénticas a las ela-boradas por los indígenas. Tal fue su

pasión que dejó cualquier otra acti-vidad productiva para dedicarse de lleno a la fabricación de cerámica.

Gracias a la tenacidad de juan Que-zada esta cerámica es la más impor-tante manifestación del arte mexica-no realizado en barro. en muchos museos del mundo se encuentran

expuestas piezas crea-das en j. Mata ortiz.

Para conocer la técni-ca de esta cerámica, puedes visitar la galería en la calle Mesones en el número 74. Sólo te adelantaremos algunos

detalles, se utiliza excremento de vaca seco para elevar la tempera-tura a 600 grados centígrados, no se requiere horno, se utiliza cabe-llo de bebés en los pinceles, no se usa ningún tipo de plantilla o patrón para hacer los diseños y se pule la cerámica con piedras como ágatas, calcedonias y obsidianas.

Mata ortizPottery rescued from Paquimé

ne of the unique charac-teristics of this region is its pottery, first developed in

pre-hispanic times. one could find pottery thrown asunder in the region of Paquimé not too long ago. The reason why this land was abandoned by its inhabitants remains a mystery. The technique for the elaboration of this singular pottery was lost with them.

a young juan Queza-da settled in j. Mata ortiz, a little town close to Paquimé. His interest in the ancient artistic expressions of the place inspired his deep fond-ness for recollecting pottery objects, and an intense desire to discover their ancient secrets.

Based on trial and error, juan deci-phered the exact method for making almost identical pieces to the ones elaborated by the old natives. Such became his passion that he quit ev-

ery other activity to fully pursue the fabrication of this pottery.

Thanks to juan Quezada’s tenacity, this pottery has become the most im-portant manifestation of Mexican art made in clay. Many museums around the world showcase pieces created at j. Mata ortiz.

In order to get to know the technique for the elaboration of this pot-tery, you can visit the shop located at 74 Me-sones. we will let you in on a few details: Cow manure is used to el-

evate the temperature to 600°C (1,100°F). No kiln is used in the pro-cess. Baby hair is used in paint brushes. No templates or patterns are used in the designs, and the pot-tery is polished with stones like ag-ate, chalcedony and obsidian.

n the highway from Dolores Hidalgo to San Miguel de Allende, you will find three vintage cars on the side of the road marking the arrival to a spectacular location. The place looks like a classic building from the Old West. There are so many details on the wooden structure that your eyes will suddenly be un-able to find a fixed spot. You will start living a captivating experi-ence upon glancing at the façade of this age-old structure.

once inside this singular restaurant-bar location, you will begin experi-encing the feeling of being in an ac-tual movie set. Rustic wood provides the look of a charming ghost town; you’ll inevitably feel like going up to the bar to enjoy a cold beer and listen to some stranger recounting wonderful tales. The back patio is an enormous staging of natural desert landscapes.

The wooden Sacred art pieces adorning the place are worth spe-cial mention. Impressive images of virgins, angels, and saints with their extraordinary finish could make you swear they were at least two centu-ries old. The talent of those who elab-orate these pieces is astounding.

he mental image of Benito Juarez’s carriage seems inevitable upon entering the place. A perfectly preserved black stage-coach instantly takes us back to the years 1862 and 1867, between which, the Father of the Americas ran the government from aboard the presidential diligence.

This old Hacienda is enormous. In-side it you will find relics that were methodically selected by its owner, enrique Hernández. don enrique travels the country in search of an-tique doors, moth-eaten time-worn windows that have seen better days, more than two hundred-year-old wagons, tables that barely cling to life, and desks still willing to help their owners with the kids’ homework.

old windows, it becomes easy to wonder: when did we come up with the idea of removing these beauties from most homes? why did we lose our good taste?

San Miguel de allende is a global pillar in the preservation of colonial architecture, and a source of inspira-tion for rescuing good taste through-out Mexico. The doors and windows don enrique finds discarded or not being used around the country be-come part of our world Heritage in San Miguel. That big was the mistake of having thrown away this reflection of our history at most cities in Mexico.
