FROM THE DESK OF
Saama Vedam: Part 8
|| Sri Ranganaatha Mahimai ||
Sri RanganaathO jayathi : Part 17
I will cover the mangalAsAsanams of PeriyAzhwAr , ThiruppANar , KulasEkarar and Thondaradipodi in this posting an conclude the series with the paasurams of NammAzhwar and Thirumangai in Part 18 . Due to limited time and space , I have to be necessarily brief .
PeriyAzhwAr "s MangalAsAsanam of Sri RanganAthan **************************************************
7
Sri VishNuchitthar became PeriyAzhwAr by virtue of becoming the father-in-law of the Lord of Srirangam . He composed hence 35 moving paasurams on Sri RanganAthan . Each one of them is deep in meaning and moving in spirit.
In 4.9.11 , PeriyAzhwAr describes Srirangam as the divya desam of preference for the Lord and that the lord of that Divya Desam is worshipped with equal fervor by people of the North and the South (KanlAzhip padayAn karuthum koil , tennAdum vadanaadum thozha ninRa Thriruvarangt Thirruppathi).
In 4.9.9 ,AzhwAr salutes Sri RanganAtha as the DasAvathAra mUrthy: " thEvudaya meenamAi aamayayAi , yenamayAi ariyAik kuraLAi , mUvuruvin IraamanAik KaNNanAik , KaRkiyAi mutippAn Koil " ( This is the koil of the Lord , who incarnated as the Matsyam with ever growing lustre , Tortoise , VarAham , Narasimham , Vaamanan , the thre RaamAs - ParasurAman, Dasaratha Raaman and Balabhadra Raamn - , KrishNa and Kalki) .
In a profound paasuram (4.9.2) , AzhwAr asks whether there is anyone who wants to be the Daasan of any God other than Sri RannganAthan . He explains why it is difficult to find any other god to match in comparison to Sri RanganAthan. He says : " If Maha Lakshmi , the embodiment of clemency for our apachArams gets fed up and some times complains about the adiyArs of the Lord , then the Lord will protest and come to their rescue and say that His adiyArs would not have committed such apachArams and if they ever committed those apachArams with the thought that He will forgive them for their trespasses , then they would have done only good deeds". In other words , He would defend His BhakthAs against any surprising complaints from His Devi , who is known for Her PurushakAram (intercession and sipArasu on behalf of the AparAthis). That is the quality of His DayA .
The decad 4.10 is a gem, where the AzhwAr prays for the blessing of the Lord's KatAksham during his last moments on this earth. AzhwAr states that he will be in a state of utter powerlesness during his last moments and will be like a log or stone , totally devoid of control over his senses to think about the Lord . Therefore , I am reciting today Your ThirunAmams in anticipation of my helpless state during my last moments. Please save me from the himsai of the servants of Yama Devan at that time and take me to Your Parama padham.
I am insuring now against my helpless state then by uttering Your naamAs ; please take note ! You must come to my rescue , when I would be helpless in my last moments .
Decad 5.1 contains some moving paasurams dealing with AzhwAr's NaicchAnusanthAnam . AzhwAr belittles himself for all of his lapses and deficiencies . Every one of the pasurams of this decad is a gem . They need to be studied and restudied . In the first paasuram , AzhwAr acknowledges that he doesnot have the purity of tongue and therefore he is disqualified to use that impure tongue to eulogize Sri RanganAthan . At the same time , my tongue which has
8
experienced the sweetnes of eulogizing You will not quit from reciting Your nAmAs . It will not praise anyone other than You .I am afraid of the compulsive activities of my immodest and impure tongue. That tongue is not under my control. Oh Lord ! Please do not consider my eulogy as coming from a mUrkan (man of bad character) and become angry at me. My tongue is so agitated that it does not listen to me inspite of its unfitness . The great ones deem even the shreik of the crow as a good deed out of their sense of tolerance . You should treat the improper and forward activities of my tongue in the same way and forgive its arrogance to venture into praising you independent of its immense disqualifications. Please forgive me and my tongue . I have recited insubstantial paasurams with my evil tongue . It is Your duty befitting Your status as the Lord of All to forgive my trespasses ( Sanku chakkaram Yenthum kaiyanE ! pizhaippaarAhilum tammadiyAr soll poRuppathu periyOr kadananRE ) .
In Paasurm 4.2.8, AzhwAr describes the Lord's reaction , when he stated that he dared to use his evil tongue to compose insubstantial poems on Him . AzhwAr was in an utter state of sorrow over his unfitness and lowliness. The Lord figured out that His bhakthan is excusing himself to get away from Him and He immediately entered into the AzhwAr and made him stay away from thoughts of his unfitness and deficiencies. AzhwAr experienced the bliss of union with the Lord and acknowleged that the citadel of the Lord , his soul is no longer in the old dejected and defenseless state and now it has become supremely protected against all inauspiciousness ( paikkonda PaampaNaiOdum pandenru pattiNam kAppE ).
In paasuram4.2.8 , AzhwAr describes the great blessing that he was priveleged to receive from the Parama DayALU , Sri Ranganaathan : " - yennuLLE peethakavAdaip piraanAr Bhirama guruvAhi vanthu , pOthil kamalavannEnjam puhunthum yenn sennitthidaril paathavilacchinai vitthAr pandanru pattinam kAppE " . My soul ( aathmA, Pattinam ) is no longer in the old dilapidated , defenseless state. It is now rejuvenated and well protected . What happened ? What was the reason for this miraculous change ? What happened was that the beautiful Lord of Srirangam wearing His brillant silk garb entered my heart lotus , which is His seat ( antharyAmi Brahmmam ) and removed all the blemishes that He found there and placed His sacred feet on my head . My soul is no longer in its old , pitiable state . Now that the Lord has entered my heart lotus , my soul is very well protected .
AzhwAr goes on to comfort the Lord in decad 5.4 (senniyOngu paasurams). He assures the Lord that He has nothing more to do for him and that He should not worry whether He had done enough for him. Srirangam paasurmas thus form a central plank in the unique anubhavam of PeriyAzhwAr in his spiritual quest and kaimkaryam .
KulasEkara Azhwar 's salutation of Sri RanganAthan *************************************************
This AzhwAr dreamt about pilgrimage to Srirangam every day from his kingdom . He gave up his kingdom finally and moved to Srirangam and reached the Lord's sacred feet there . He
9
gave us 31 marvellous paasurams known for their depth of Bhakthi . The first three of his ten decads are about Azhagiya MaNavALan , Sri RanganAthan .
In the first decad , KulasEkarA longs for the day , when he would be able to stand in the courtyard of Sri RanganAthan hugging the two ThirumaNatthUNNkal . These two pillars are known as the marriage pillars . They are recognized as a pair representing the fragrance of Sri RanganAthan . The BhakthAs overcome by the Lord's beauty hold on to them to maintain their balance , when the flood of the Lord's beauty hits them as they stand in the ThirumuRRam of the Lord : " KadiarangattharavaNayil paLLIk koLLUM MaayOnai , maNat thUNE paRRi ninru yenn vaayAra yenru kolO vAzhtthum nALE " ( when will that day arrive, when I can stand holding the two marriage pillars at the garbhagraham of Sri RanganAthan and eulogize Him with all the power of my tongue ? ).
In the second decad , AzhwAr celebrates the glory of the BhAgavathAs , who are engaged in Bhagavadh Kaimkaryam tirelessly . He says that the purpose of the eyes are to have the sevai of those BhaagavathAs . He states that the bath in the dust of the feet of the BhagavathAs is far superior in its holiness compared to the bath in sacred waters of ganga and other puNya theerthams .In the fourth paasuram , AzhwAr declares that his mind will forever sing pallAndu to the sacred feet of the BhaagavathAs . In the eighth paasuram , AzhwAr reveals that his heart is hopelessly in love with the VaishNava Lakshmi of Sri VaishNavAs , who lose themselves in ecstacy over Sri RanganAthA , their Lord .
In the third decad , AzhwAr explains the transformation in him as his mind fell in love with the BhaagavathAs of Lord RanganAthan . He says that he developed VairAghyam and lost interest in pomp and circumstance and discarded all perishable sukhams . He says that he avoided from then on the people , who confuse their body with their aathmA and equate the perishable siRRinbhams with the PeRinbham of relating to the Lord . In the sixth paasuram of this decad , Azhwar states with conviction :
(Meaning): I will not associate with those , who have are not the servants of the Lord like me . I will always stay intoxicated with the love for my Lord of Nithya Sooris , who is at His Periya Koil at Srirangam .
ThiruppANAzhwAr's great anubhavam of the beauty of the Lord ***********************************************************
The ten most beautiful paasurams of ThiruppANAzhwAr have very few comparisons . Swami Desikan gave us a profound commentary known as " Muni Vaahana BhOgam on these ten verses . Swami Desikan decribed these ten paasurams this way :
(Meaning ) : The ten paasurams of PaaNN PerumAL are the saarArthams (quintessence )of the Divya-Prabhandhams , which are nothing but Tamizh Vedams .
ThiruppANa AzhwAr was overcome by the beauty of the sarvAnga Soundharyam of Sri RanganAthan reclining on Adhi Seshan at Srirangam . He enjoyed the beauty of the Lord from foot to head ( paadhAthi kEsAntham ) and gave us the extraordinary paasurams starting with the words : AmalanAthipirAN .
Thondardipodi, the RanganAtha pathivrathai ****************************************** 1. ThiruppaLLIyeZucchi Paasurams ******************************
Vipra NaarAyaNar described himself as the dust from the feet of BhagavathAs of the Lord of Srirangam ( Thondaradippodi ). He gave us ThiruppaLLIyezhucchi (suprabhAtham verses), which are the most beautiful in their lyrical description of the approach of sunrise at Srirangam . He prayed to the Lord to wake up from His nidhrA and protect the people , just as He did wake up the AzhwAr from his samsAric sleep earlier . The taniyan by Thiruvarangap PerumAn arayar describes the AzhwAr , who woke up the Lord as " Vandu tiNartha vayal ThennarangatthAmmAnai PaLLLi uNartthum PirAn '. Another Taniyan salutes the AzhwAr's SookthimALas and decribes how the AzhwAr approached the sleeping Lord and appealed to Him to wake up to bless the world:
(Meaning): The AzhwAr considered Lord RanganAthA sleeping on His serpent bed as the paravAsudEvA of Sri Vaikuntam and accorded Him all the honors due to a King and woke Him up through his paasurams . He concludes this prabhandham with a prayer to the Lord to bless him to become the servant of the servants of Him . He asks the Lord of Srirangam to get up from His serpent bed for the express purpose of giving him the blessed status of being the servant of the BahgavathAs , who are near and dear to Arangan .
2. ThirumAlai Paasurams of Thondardipodi ****************************************
The fourty five paasurams of ThirumAlai have a profound expression of the ananya Bhakthi of the AzhwAr . For this AzhwAr , no other divya desa mUrthy mattered . Sri RanganAthA was his entire focus and purpose of his life. That is why, he has been saluted as Sri RanganAtha Pathivrathai . He exults over the power that he derived by learning the sacred Moola Manthram of the Lord and declares that he is shouting with joy and is dancing over
11
the heads of the servants of Yama dharman . In another paasuram, he reveals that the bliss that arises from reciting the many divya naamAs of Sri RanganAthan is far superior to the bliss arising from the stay at parama Padham . Therefore , he says that he rejects life at Sri Vaikuntam over the life at Srirangam spent in the enjoyment of the naama sankeerthanam of the Lord's thousand names .
One of the Bhakthais of this group wanted me to write about the " Vandinamuralum sOlai " Paasuram of ThirumAlai . I will focus on this beautiful verse of Thondardipodi rendered in Thodi Raagam by Sangeetha KalAnidhi M.S.S in a famous recording few decades back .
In this paasuram , AzhwAr describes the natural beauty of Srirangam and the greatness of the Lord resting on His serpent bed there. Suddenly , the AzhwAr's mood shifts ; he has a flashing thought about the mUrkAs (dushtAs), who do not recite the holy names of the Lord of Srirangam, and are feasting themselves in a banquet. AzhwAr gets mad and asks us to get there and pull the food from their full plates and throw that to the dogs. The paasuram containing these thoughts is as follows :
(Comments): Vandinamuralum sOlai : Srirangam is surrounded by multitudes of groves full of the humming bees . The Vandu or bees are also known as dhvirEpams since they have two "R's in their name (Bhramaram). That name Bhramaram also means Rishis , who do Hari nAma sankeethanam (equivalent to the reenkAram of the Vandus). Thus the groves of Srirangam are resonating with the divya naama sankeerthanam of the sages .
MayilinamAlum sOlai : While the bees are producing reenkAram in the air reciting the Lord's many names, on the ground , the peacocks are excited from hearing the sacred names of the Lord and they begin to dance with joy as they visualize the neela megha PerumAL resting inside the Ranga VimAnam . Normally , the Pea cocks spread thier plumes and dance , when they see the dark blue rain-laden clouds . here, their dance arises from the thought of the dark blue hue of the Lord celebrated by the bees .
Kondal meethaNavum sOlai : Now the blue clouds of the rainy season come low and brush against the foliage of the trees of the verdant groves to gain the attention of the dancing peacocks , which do not take note of them as they would have done at any place other than Srirangam .
Kuyilanam koovum sOlai : Here at the groves of Srirangam . the nightingales are calling each other witht their sweet voices to come together to sing about the Lord.
12
Andar kOnn amarum sOlai : Sri Ranganaathan arrives at these groves and rests in the mantapams there during His many uthsavams . Hence , they become blessed and become places of the songs for the bees and nightingales and the rangam (stage) for the dance of peacocks .
aNi Thiruvarangam yennAmindar : Those that do not recognize the holiness of Srirangam with its eventful groves and fail to hail this holy divya desam and salute it with reverence as Sri RanganAthA's divya desam .
Mindar paaynthuNNum sORRai vilakki nAykkidumineerE : Of those sinful ones eating with gusto their food, there is only one thing to do . They are falling over their food and forgetting to think of Sri RanganAthA and his holy place of residence. Azhwar asks us to quickly go there and ake away the food that they are lusting over and throw it to the dogs . That is the kind of reverence the AzhwAr has for Sri RanganAthA and the anger he has for those , who fail to recognize the holiness of Srirangam and go about their worldly ways .

8. A Perfected Karma Yogi - Attains Knowledge of the Self:
Indeed, there is no purifier here equal to knowledge (na hi jnaanena sadris’am pavitram iha vidyate). The one who has attained perfection in karma Yoga (by discharging one’s duties with devotion and dedication and for the general good of society whom God indwells) – Yoga samsiddhah), by himself attains spontaneously in his self the realisation of the Reality (jnaana) – self-realisation, in due course (tat svayam kaalena aatmani vindati) – (4.38):
17
[Note: It is important to understand the significance of the expression in verse (4.38) – kaalena aatmani vindati – eventually or in due course attains self realization. What Krishna means is that the successful karma yogin has got firmly fixed in the realization that He is not the body, but the immortal spirit divine (which indeed is jnaana) and that what such a karma yogin has achieved is the state of “naishkarmya siddhi – a state of actionlessness, even though he might be immensely active – a state described in verse (18.49) – designated as the first stage of achievement of the saadhaka, preliminary to the achievement of the second stage of self-realization – kaivalya, through the practice of certain disciplines - characterized as jnaana by Krishna Himself in (13.7 – 11), as explained in (18.51 -53). These values are the instruments of karma yoga and as such, it is not difficult to practise and realize them very soon by the person perfected in karma yoga and who has already achieved naishkarmya siddhi. So the perfected karma yogi will soon attain to self-realisation (kaivalya). This progress of the karma yogi is discussed in the section on “Saadhaka’s Gradual Spiritual progress”, in the presentation of Chapter 18. In this context, the significance of the term – „svayam‟ in (4.38) is not to be missed. The self-sufficiency of karma yoga to gain self – knowledge and consequent liberation is brought out beyond any shadow of doubt.]: 1. Krishna is only repeating what He has already stated in (4.37) – “Just as the well kindled fire (yathaa agnih samiddhah) reduces a heap of fuel to ash (kurute basmasaat edaamsi), O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge reduces all works (effect of past deeds) to ashes (tathaa jnaana agnih kurute basmasaat sarvakarmaan’i)”. Krishna affirms that nothing in the world purifies the self as knowledge gained by ardent and sincere practice of karma Yoga. Just as the wakeful state is the spontaneous purifier of the self – imposed ignorance of the dream state, like – wise self – knowledge cleanses one of the delusions of the cycle of samsaara. It reinstates him in his original state of bliss. The proper performance of karma Yoga transforms karma into jnaana yajna, as stated earlier leading to a state of self – consciousness, which is knowledge itself, - a force of purification. Krishna is explaining in (4.38): “one treading aright the path of karma Yoga, containing the essential element of knowledge, will naturally and spontaneously attain the knowledge of the highest type as he reaches ripeness of spirit in Karma Yoga and eventually attains self-realisation, the consummation of that very knowledge”. 2. Krishna is suggesting that gaining knowledge (light) destroys ignorance (darkness) and not that knowledge is gained by destroying ignorance. Rather one should gain knowledge by direct experience (anubhava). He is emphasising that all ways of action are enveloped by the context of knowledge and we are asked to discover that knowledge by perfect practice of karma Yoga and get liberated by our own effort. It has been stated in (4.33) that all actions culminate in knowledge. The attainment of self-realisation suggested in (4.38) is the consummation of that knowledge. We are not to miss to note the connection between (4.33) and (4.38). The praise showered on jnaana (knowledge) in the first part of (4.38) is to emphasise the importance of knowledge element in karma Yoga, which ripens into full knowledge as discussed earlier. The first step, that is jnaana – know thy self, is not only to be realized, but also has to be practiced in all our actions. This is the practice of jnaana. Jnaana is not merely knowing, but it is doing, perhaps, in a more important sense. Only then can knowledge sprout spontaneously from karma Yoga, as stated in (4.38). It is this way karma and jnaana gets integrated. So Krishna emphasizes that the saadhaka should have firm faith (s’raddha) in this first step, namely that one is not the body-complex but immortal spirit divine, which automatically through karma yoga leads to self-realisation and consequently to supreme peace. Hence is the apt title for this fourth discourse – “Renunciation of action in wisdom”.
18
3. Now, a question may rightly arise that if knowledge is the final outcome of karma yoga as explained, then why not one directly achieve it by samnyaasa (meditative contemplative life giving up all external activities)? True this can be done, if the person is drawn to it spontaneously and naturally and by his inherited tendencies (svabhaava). But such a self-realised person has necessarily to come back to the world of action and contribute to social welfare (lokasamgraha) and without this participation, his realisation of the knowledge of the self is of no avail (vide examples of Janaka and the Lord Himself cited by Krishna – 3.20 - 24 ). So it is urged that one should go by the path of action for the sake of lokasamgraha and which also at the same time results in knowledge (self-realisation). The merit in the approach suggested by Krishna is that it achieves both the social and personal well-being, with the added advantage that it is easier and free from the fear of fall due to failure to achieve, which is not the case with jnaana yoga.
9. Karma Yogi Attains Soon Supreme Peace:
1. Immediately following the important verse (4.38), Krishna makes a significant observation, which emphsises that the knowledge that the perfected karma yogi has gained is not ordinary knowledge. It is knowledge in which all his actions attain culmination and completion, the true knowledge of God enabling him to see all existences in his own self and then in the Deity, a knowledge leading to supreme peace. He who has s’raddha - faith (devotion) – s’raddhavaan, who is engrossed in the Infinite - tat parah, and who has mastered his senses – samyata indriyah, attains wisdom – labhate jnaanam. Having attained wisdom labdhvaa jnaanam, he attains soon to supreme peace – adhigacchati aciren’a paraam s’aantim. – (4.39): 2. This verse mentions three values (qualities) absolutely necessary for progress in spiritual life and also in secular pursuits as well. These are – (i) s’raddha (indomitable will based on supreme faith); (ii). ardent or intense absorption in the Supreme (tat parah) and (iii). control of senses (samyata indriyah). Anything that has become a matter of faith in a person, unlike what is mere belief, works as an operative force, enthusing him to put the content of his faith to practice, and to struggle towards realization of the ideal it presents. Ardour and sincerity are of the very stuff of faith. Faith is firm and active acceptance unlike belief or a conventional conformity which has no power to move a person to action. ESSAY WILL CONTINUE
When even the Vedas serving as bards, become fatigued in describing just one
attribute of the Lord as it is , what can be said of people who have limited capacity.

mithampachaaH- who are limited in capacity?
The glory of the Lord is such that even the Vedas, which are the primary source of
knowledge about Him, are not able to do full justice to His description. Desika
portrays the Vedas as the bards trying to sing about His merits and he says that
24
when they start extolling even one of His infinite auspicious attributes, they become
tired.
Then Desika expresses his humility by saying that under such circumstances what
those with limited intellect can expect to accomplish, meaning himself.
3.Sakthyaa SourikaThaasvaadhaH sThaane

He goes on to reassure himself that the subject is sourikatha, story of Krishna,
which is like nectar that will be relished even if it is told by a dull witted person.

DO YOU KNOW ? 8. Health Benefits Of Baking Soda
Baking soda is not only an important ingredient for your baking dishes, but this compound can also
help to alleviate various illnesses. The chemical name of baking soda is sodium bicarbonate.
This white powder should not be confused with baking powder, which has cream of tartar and starch added to sodium bicarbonate.
Good for the kidney : Baking soda is good for renal health. According to a study, sodium
bicarbonate could prevent kidney disease and renal failure. Progression of chronic kidney disease or
CKD, which causes permanent kidney damage, can be arrested by regular consumption of baking soda. Regular intake of baking soda by CKD patients could reduce the need for dialysis.
It has also been found that baking soda could reduce the risk of end-stage renal disease or ESRD. In
order to survive, ESRD patients need regular dialysis. Although, by increasing the blood pressure
level, high levels of sodium is considered hazardous for cardiovascular health and the brain, but
intake of baking soda showed no significant rise in the blood pressure level.
Acid reflux remedy : The alkaline nature of baking soda is beneficial for treating problems of
acidity. Folk healers often recommend baking soda consumption for treating heartburn and
indigestion problems. To cure heartburn, add half a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water and
drink the solution.
Shinning teeth : You can also use baking soda for polishing your teeth. You can make your teeth
sparkling white by brushing them with baking soda.
Skin care
Baking soda can be included in your skin care routine. To make a face mask with baking soda, mix
water with baking soda to make a thick paste. Leave this baking soda paste on your face, until the paste becomes dry. With damp hand, gently massage your face.
This helps in skin exfoliation, removing dirt and dead cells from your skin. Baking soda face mask
can prevent acne and it keeps your skin clean. To reduce irritation from sunburn and insect bite, add
baking soda to your bath water. Baking soda can also help to reduce body odor.

SRI NARASIMHA DARSHANAM
BY.Sri.JEGANNAATHAN.K.S.
SRI NARASIMHA DARSHANAM - 44 KUNJALLOOR
ESSENCE OF THE FOURTH SLOKAM The fourth slOkam is in the form of an assurance by Pulasthyar that he will initiate Sage DhAlabhyar in to the Japam of a Sthuthi, which would produce subham, remove all obstacles that stand in the way of desired fruits and destroy all amangaLams. The benefits accruing from meditation of JanArdhana Hari is indicated as the remedy for the ills associated with amangaLams. Sage Pulasthyar addresses Sage DhAlabhyar as the srEshtar among Brahmins (Dhvijavarya:) and asks latter to listen attentively to what he (Pulasthyar) is going to say: shrunuShva cAnyat gadatO mamAkhilam vadAmi yattE dvijavarya MangaLam | sarvArthasiddhim pradadAti yat sadA nihantyashEShANi ca PaatakAni || (4) MEANING
Oh the exalted one among BrahmaNAs! I will describe the sthuthi that will be auspicious to you and will grant you all that you desire. It will destroy all inauspiciousness for those, who recite it. Please listen to this discourse by me fully. COMMENTS:
Sage Pulasthyar points out that Maangalya Sthavam has the power to do two things: It yields SarvArtha-Siddhi /pradadAti SarvArtha-siddhim PaatakAni ca ashEShANi nihanti; it destroys all sins down to their roots Whatever is desired by you that are auspicious, the recitation of this sthavam makes it possible for you to attain it; further, it destroys utterly all the bad karmAs down to their roots. Paathakams (greatest of sins) are BrahmahathyAdhi Pancha Paathakams. Those paathakams are all destroyed. The recitation of the Maangalya sthavam also yields the fruits of “SarvArTa Siddhi” or the relaization of all Isvaryam.
KUNJALLOOR THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NAME “SARVARTA SIDDHI” The choice of SwAmy DEsikan to name his commentary on Tatthva Muktha KalApa as “SarvArTa Siddhi” is intriguing in this context adiyEn wonders whether SwAmy DEsikan received his inspiration from this slOkam, where this boon of “SarvArTa Siddhi” is specially mentioned. SarvArTa siddhi of Swamy Desikan is a terse SrI Sookthi. It is a wonderful summary of the uniqueness of Bhakthi and SaraNAgathi maargams based on the VisishtAdvaidhic fundamentals dealing with the special relationship between
39
Isvaran and Jeevan. Swamy Desikan implied that full comprehension of his SrI Sookthi, SarvArTa Siddhi will help to understand the central doctrines of VedAnthA as established by AchArya RaamAnujA in his SrI BhAshyam: Brahman has attributes and is identical with Sriman NaarAyaNa, world and souls are real, the relation between Brahman on one hand and the world of animate and inanimate objects on the other is that between soul and body. Brahman is the only One having the world as its (His) attribute, thus giving the name of VishiShtAdvaitam to this school and Bhakti and Prapatti are the means of getting liberation from bondage Among all the Isvaryams (ArTA), the Parama PurushArTam is MOksham and hence it is the SarvArTa Siddhi. In the 48th slOkam of Saptharathna MaalikA, the SrI sookthi of SarvArTa siddhi is defined as being essential for one's protection/SvarakshA (MangaLam) and the Satha-dhUshaNi SrI Sookthi is identified with PrathyarTi Bhangam (Para matha Bhangam or destruction of vEda Baahya mathams and kudrushti mathams): sarvArthasiddhi: satadUShaNi ca dvE khEda-shAstrE katakAgragANAm aadyEna tatra kriyatE svarakShA PratyarthIbhanga:kriyatE parENa. That SarvArTa sidhdi is what Sage Pulasthyar seems to be referring to in his upadEsam. Couertesy : http://www.sundarasimham.org/ebooks/ebook65.htm MangalyaSthavam

Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty – armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence and thus –by spiritual – strength – conquer this instiable enemy known as that.

Ivargal Tiruvakku
Story with many lessons The story of Nachiketas is one that is full of moral lessons for everyone, said Adur Asuri
Madhavachari. Vajasravas, father of Nachiketas, performs a yaga, and donates cows. But the cows he gifts away are sickly ones.
Nachiketas, aware of the sin of gifting sickly cows, wonders how this sin can be atoned for. He asks
Vajasravas to whom he would donate his son. Vajasravas, angered by the question, says that he will
gift Nachiketas to the God of death - Yama. Immediately, Nachiketas goes to Yama loka. Yama is
away, and Nachiketas is made to wait outside for three days. When Yama returns, he is upset that
the child has been without food and water for three days. So he offers him food and water, and apologises for not being there to welcome him.
To compensate for having kept the child waiting for three days, Yama says he will grant him three
boons. The child's first request is that his father should not shun him. His second request is that
Yama should teach him what yaga to perform to reach Heaven. But the third request is the surprise
one, considering Nachiketas' age.
Nachiketas asks Yama what happens to the atma, when a person dies. Yama tells him that this is a
question that isn't easy to answer. Instead, he suggests that Nachiketas ask for something else, like
wealth or long life. But Nachiketas answers that all of these things will vanish one day. The atma,
which is indestructible, is what he wants to learn about. Because of the child's persistence, Yama
tells him about the atma.
The story of Nachiketas is rendered in the Kathopanishad, and it has many lessons for us. First, it
becomes obvious that one should not gift something that is useless or that one does not want, as Vajasravas did. Second, every guest must be honoured.
When a scholar comes home it is as if an embodiment of the Vaisvanara agni is visiting. That is why
water is offered to a guest, to wash his feet, in order to cool down the heat of the fire. Third and the
most important of all is the wisdom of Nachiketas, who seeks atma gnana, instead of worldly possessions. We must discard attachment to worldly pleasures and seek liberation.
