Third Sunday of Lent

(Readings: Exodus 17:3-7 — Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 — John 4:5-42) Hallowed be… — Every time we recite the Lord’s Prayer, we say, Hallowed be thy name. This is raised as a concern by Our Lady of La Salette, in two distinct contexts. First she expresses her sadness at the abuse of her

Son’s name. Later, she encourages the children to say at least an Our Father and a Hail Mary in their night and morning prayers. This is also her way of reminding us of the Commandment: You shall not take the name

of the Lord, your God, in vain. Interestingly, the notion of “hallow” occurs in the next commandment: Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. Our Lady reminds us of this commandment as well. ‘Hallow’ and ‘holy’ are what linguists call cognate words. Like ‘strengthen’ and ‘strong,’ one is a verb and the other an

adjective to express the same idea. In the Gospel, Jesus was angry that the Temple, his Father’s house, was being turned into a marketplace. The very place that contained the Holy of Holies was not being kept holy.

The sellers of sacrificial animals had forgotten God’s word to Solomon: “I have consecrated this house which you have built and I set my name there forever; my eyes and my heart shall be there always” (1 Kings 9:3).

The reading from St. Paul is from the first chapter of First Corinthians. The letter opens with Paul addressing “the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy.”

Coming so early in the letter, it states the theme of much that is to follow. Later In the same letter he writes: “The temple of God, which you are, is holy.” Without using those words, Mary surely has that same notion in

mind when she speaks of “my people.” There can be no doubt that she means the people ransomed by her Son, called to be “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own” (1 Peter 2:19). Jesus taught us to pray, “Hallowed be thy name.” This is a promise on our part to hallow it. In that same spirit of

commitment we might add: Hallowed be thy day; Hallowed be thy house; Hallowed be thy people.

"URGENT NEED FOR MINISTERS TO THE SICK FOR ORMC" Were you aware that Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharis c at Blessed Trinity go to the Orlando Health every Tuesday morning as Ministers to the Sick? Our parishioners been doing this for years. In 2017 several of these dedicated people have been compelled to leave this hospital ministry for various reasons including poor health and family needs. We thank those ministers for their long, devoted service. Currently, we are shorthanded and in dire need of ministers for Orlando Health. If you can devote one or more Tuesday mornings per month to this ministry, please contact Susan Tisdale at either [email protected] or via telephone at 410-336-3361 for more informa on about this ministry. Our goal is to send 3 ministers to the hospital every Tuesday morning. Thank you for considering this call to service and may God bless you.

At the 10:00am Mass this weekend, our elect at Blessed

Trinity celebrated the First Scru ny. Three scru nies are

celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fi h Sundays of

Lent. The scru nies are meant to help uncover and heal

all that is weak, defec ve, or sinful in the lives of the

elect, as well as bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. They are celebrated

in order to deliver the elect from tempta on and evil, and to give them strength in Christ, who is

the Way, the Truth, and the Life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the

elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God

above all. Each year, the texts and scripture readings for the scru nies come from Cycle A of the

lec onary, because these help expose our growing need for God. The gospel readings are the

gospel of the Samaritan woman at the well for the first scru ny, the gospel of the man born blind

for the second scru ny, and the gospel of the raising of Lazarus for the third scru ny.

The Transforming Power of Authen c Love Have you ever longed for something “more” in your life? Would you like Jesus to encounter you in a deep way this Lent? During this mission we will delve into the powerful truths of Christ’s love for us, His desire to heal us and set us free and how He empowers us to bring His love to others. Through Scripture, catechism, art, and beauty we will journey to the heart of our deepest desire: communion with the One who loves us. Please make plans to join us March 5-7 for St. James Cathedral Lenten Parish Mission featuring Sr. Miriam James SOLT!

Santificado sea…
