SSecond Sunday of Advent December 13
“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all
circum-stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for
you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16 - 18 This scripture reading sums up
Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He
will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer
should be a running con-versation with God throughout the whole
day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in
bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build
empathy for others in similar situations and shows our dependence
on God.

be available for you to download and view on your mobile phone or
tablet. Simply scan the QR Code below or PDF version is also
available for you to download and print from our website. The
worship guide contains the Sunday readings, hymns and
responses.
Open the QR Code reader on your phone. Hold your device over a
QR Code so that it’s clearly visible
within your smartphone’s screen. Two things can happen when you
correctly hold your smartphone over a QR Code. The phone
automatically scans the code. On some readers, you have to press a
button to snap a picture, not unlike the button on your smartphone
camera. If necessary, press the button. Your smartphone reads the
code and navigates to the intended desti-nation, which doesn’t
happen instantly. It may take a few sec-onds on most devices.

The Pastor’s Corner
December 8, 2020 Dear Friends, At his Inaugural Mass as Supreme
Pontiff, Pope St. John Paul II said these unforgettable words,
“Brothers and sisters, do not be afraid to welcome Christ and
accept His power…Do not be afraid! Open, I say open wide the doors
to Christ! … So often today, man does not know that which is within
him, in the depths of his mind and heart. So often he is uncer-tain
about the meaning of his life on this earth. He is assailed by
doubt, a doubt which turns into despair. We ask you, therefore, we
beg you, with humility and with trust, let Christ speak to man. He
alone has words of life, yes, of eternal life.” (October 22, 1978)
How well these words speak to our times today. It is no secret that
Covid-19 has impacted the lives and livelihoods of many. But to a
world that is tossed about in its own uncertainty and fear, we make
a bold proclamation; “The light shines in the darkness and the
darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) Doubt and fear must yield
to the new hope given to the eyes of faith in the Child born in
Bethlehem. Christmas matters because Jesus matters. It is His
coming into the world we celebrate. What is Christmas, my friends,
if it is not the opening of our hearts to Him who speaks the words
of life to us and reveals God to man and man to himself? The
celebration of the Nativity of the Lord is especially urgent this
year because we need to be renewed in the hope Christ offers us.
But it also poses several pastoral and practical challenges for us.
On one hand, we need to “throw open the doors” of the church to
those who come to church at Christmas. On the other hand, we need
to do it in a way that protects the health and safety of our
parishioners according to the current guidelines of both the
Diocese of Metuchen and state and local health authorities. In
order to balance these two needs, I am adding more Masses to our
current schedule. Masses will be celebrated in both the church and
the gymnasium of Immaculata High School in order to ac-commodate
our parishioners in a way that respects current health and safety
guidelines. The Mass schedule will be as follows:
December 24: The Vigil of Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord
5:00pm in the Church
5:30pm in Immaculata High School 7:00pm in Immaculata High
School
7:30pm in the Church 12:00am in the Church
December 25: The Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord 9:00am in
the Church
9:30am in Immaculata High School 11:00am in the Church
11:30am in Immaculata High School
We have developed a schedule for Masses celebrated in Spanish in
conjunction with the Oratorian community in Rari-tan. That schedule
is as follows:
Christmas Eve, 8:00pm at St. Joseph Church, Raritan Christmas
Day, 12:00pm at St. Joseph Church, Raritan
Christmas Day, 1:00pm at Immaculate Conception Church,
Somerville. We must also consider the current restriction which
limits the occupancy of our worship spaces to 25% of their capacity
or 150 people, whatever number is less. For us, our capacity is now
limited to 150 people per Mass in both locations. In order
accomplish this, an online registration process has been created
and linked to the parish website. Registration is required for each
individual to attend Christmas Masses this year so we can ensure
that social distancing is maintained in the church and not have to
turn people away at the door once the church or gym has reached
capacity. The online registration portal will be opened on Monday,
December 14, 2020. Once it opens, registration will be
first-come-first-served so I suggest that you register as soon as
possible. Upon completing your registration, a confirmation email
will be sent to you which must be presented to the ushers for
admittance into the church or gym for Mass. Of course, face-masks
must be worn at all times both in church and the gym for Christmas
Masses.

Immaculate Conception Pro-Life Corner
This weekend, on Saturday Dec. 12, we honor Mary under her
ti-tle Our Lady of Guadalupe. Many praying and working in the
de-fense of Life have a special devo-tion to Our Lady of Guadalupe,
seeing in this appearance of Mary a clear expression of God's love
for all humanity, including the child in the womb. The feast
cele-brates the appearance in Mexico
of the Blessed Mother to St. Juan Diego in the year 1531. Mary
appeared as a beautiful pregnant girl, with a complexion similar to
that of an Aztec Indian. From her dress and the site of her
appearance, the Aztecs would clearly understand her to be the
Mother of God. Mary requested St. Juan Diego to tell the Bishop she
wished that a chapel be built at the site where she appeared,
explaining - "I am your merciful Mother, the Mother of all who live
united in this land, and all mankind, of all those who love me, of
those who cry to me, of those who have confidence in me. Here I
will hear their weeping and their sorrows, and will remedy and
alleviate their sufferings, necessities and misfortunes." The
Bishop did not believe Juan and asked for a sign. Our Lady told
Juan to go to the top of a hill and gather roses. Juan obeyed
although he knew that only cactus grew there. Finding the roses he
gathered them and returned to Mary who arranged them in his tilma
(pancho). When Juan returned to the Bishop and opened his tilma the
roses fell to the floor and all present were amazed to see on his
tilma an im-age of Our Lady, just as she appeared to St. Juan
Die-go. Mary's appearance to St. Juan Diego as one of his people,
and as the pregnant Mother of God, is a power-ful reminder that all
people have value and dignity, in-cluding the child in the womb.
Our Lady of Guadalupe represents God's love for all people, born
and pre-born, especially identifying with the poor and defenseless
among us. As we pray and work to bring the Culture of Life to our
present day society, we need to seek the in-tercession of Our Lady
of Guadalupe and remember with confidence the encouragement she
gave to St. Juan Diego - "Listen and let it penetrate your heart
... do not be troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any
illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your
Mother? Are you not under my shadow and pro-tection? Am I not your
fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle? In the
crossing of my arms? Is there anything else you need?" In these
days when we are facing the prospect of having our government under
the control of those who will push radical pro-abortion poli-cies,
we especially need the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe to
protect the child in the womb. Our Lady of Guadalupe pray for us,
and through your intercession may we become a nation that truly
respects the sanctity of all human life. Submitted by Kevin

Social Ministry Operation St. Nick -
Operation St. Nick is our Christ-mas gift giving endeavor for
area children/families in need. Look for the Christmas tree in the
Church, beginning November 21st! This year for 2020 we have a
Sign-Up Geni-us link for people who would
rather contribute in this way. If you prefer this option just go
to our website which takes you to the Operation Saint Nick write up
and includes the link to sign up geni-us
(www.immaculateconception.org). Tags on the Giving Tree this year
will be available for those who wish to con-tribute in the
traditional manner. We are still planning to collect close to a
thousand gifts as we have done over the past years, however, given
the current condi-tions Sign Up Genius, for some may be the best
ap-proach to our Christmas giving! You can type the link into your
browser and all instructions will be provided. Please be aware that
we will be disinfecting the Giving Tree with Lysol throughout the
day. The tags on the tree indicate specific gifts requested by
families and their chil-dren. By taking a tag or using Sign Up
Genius then re-turning the gifts to church with the specified gift,
you will be sharing the joy of Christmas with those less fortunate.
Each year more than one thousand gifts are collected and
distributed to parishioners in need and other local agencies (i.e.
Division of Youth and Family Services, Catholic Charities, our
Parish Christmas Appalachian Mission and Parish families in need).
It is easy to become distracted from the true meaning of Christmas
in a world that emphasizes commercialism and seems to push toward
secular observance of the holi-days. It is a blessing to be part of
a faith community that exemplifies the spirit of giving, year after
year, by its gen-erous participation in this project. The simple
act of giv-ing selflessly and joyfully is a wonderful way to
celebrate the birth of our Savior. Each year Immaculate Conception
Parish’s outpouring of love has put a smile on the infant child,
our Lord and Sav-ior. Two thousand years have come and gone, yet
de-spite the pain and suffering that exist in this sometimes-cruel
world, you bring joy – joy to the world that yes, the Lord has
come. Thank you for continually saying yes and bringing Christ into
the world through your unselfish acts of charity. You have truly
embraced the challenge of the season to live justly and to be a
peaceful presence in our world. The mystery of God continues to be
born in you throughout the year.
Alternative Gift-Giving Op-portunity 2020 ~ Think Out-side the
Box! Back by popular de-mand our Alternative Gift Giving
Oppor-tunity (AGGO) will be held this weekend: December 5th and
6th. The AGGO offers all parishioners an opportunity to give to
those who are less fortunate. This is a chance to welcome
Christmas with less emphasis on material gift giving and respond to
the needs of those around us. Realizing that one of the greatest
gifts we can give is to help improve the qual-ity of another’s
life. Representatives from our church will be present in the main
vestibule of the church at the AGGO after all Masses. Parishioners
will be invited to make a donation to the cause of their choice,
and in turn will be given a certi icate to present to the people in
your life whom you wish to honor through this gift giving. This is
a chance to honor family and friends through your generos-ity
towards others in need of assistance. Participating agencies will
include: SHIP (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program); Habitat for
Humanity; Appalachia Relief Services; Pregnancy Aid Center of
Raritan; Immaculate Conception Elizabeth Ministry; Interfaith
Hospitability Network; and the Immaculate Conception Social
Ministry Emergency Relief Fund. The Gift Giving Opportunity comes
at such a perfect time of year. Not only because most of us feel
generous and desire to help those in need, but also it is a time
when we are searching for gift ideas. Sometimes we need a little
some-thing to add to a gift, sometimes we need stocking stuffers,
sometimes we want to give a gift to someone, but we know that
person needs absolutely nothing. The Gift Giving Op-portunity can
meet all these needs! It is just the perfect gift to give anyone.
There are also so many options of charities and amounts to give.
Some testimonials include: “I love giving a gift to the Appalachian
Relief Services to my Fa-ther. He was a builder by trade, and I
think it brings back fond memories, in addition, he knows that a
donation is going to help others in need, which is something he did
all his life.” “I love giving this gift in my children's stockings.
They always open their stockings irst and this just re-minds them
what the real spirit of Christmas is, giving.” “Personally, I view
The Gift Giving Opportunity is a won-derful convenience to me as it
completes my Christmas shopping. It's a place where you can ind a
gift for everyone on your list!” Participating in our Alternative
Gift Giving Opportunity is a great way to make a difference this
holiday season. At the fair, learn about the many local,
organizations making a difference in our community and world.

plenamente. El que los llama es fiel, y así lo hará.” A mitad de
esta estación santa, se nos da ánimo. Encuentre la alegría en la
presencia del Señor. Use estos días para oración. San Pablo dice a
A menudo reflexionamos
Estamos llamados a
cumplir Su voluntad.
Mensaje Espiritual
TERCER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO Primera Lectura: Isaías 61:1-2a,

necesidades, dudas y temores. Bajo su dirección, bajo su
patrocinio, bajo su bondad y protección, no hay que temer nada;
natural.

8 de Diciembre 2020 Queridos amigos, En su Misa Inaugural como
Sumo Pontífice, el Papa San Juan Pablo II dijo estas inolvidables
palabras: “Hermanos, no temáis acoger a Cristo y aceptar su poder…
¡No tengáis miedo!
No,
tengas miedo!" Servus, Msgr. Joseph G. Celano
