Once I was a clever boy learning the arts of Oxford is a quotation from the verses written byBishop Richard Fleming (c1385-1431) for his tomb in Lincoln Cathedral Fleming the founder of
Lincoln College in Oxford is the subject of my research for a D Phil and like me a son of theWest Riding
I have remarked in the past that I have a deeply meaningful on-going relationship with a deadfifteenth century bishop It was Fleming who in effect enabled me to come to Oxford and to

I cannot understand why any one would not want the Pope to becrowned with the tiara and wear it on appropriate occasions
The origins of the tiara are complex and may once have representedtemporal authority under the By zantine Emperor By the time itbecame the tiara we recognise it had been spiritualised as a sy mbol ofthe Papal monarchy governing the Church As in medievalrepresentions God the Father is often represented wearing the tiara itis a reminder that the Papal power is delegated from God and as withthe decree on Papal Infallibility refers to that power inherent in theChurch itself The Pope wears the tiara on behalf of the whole Churchand exercises authority on behalf of the whole Church over theChurch as Gods v icar Coronation points out the limitations andresponsibilities of the monarchical office spiritual or secular - it wasabsolutist monarchies that tended to dispense with or downgradecoronations Pope Paul VI may have set aside his tiara but in respectof the liturgy at least he acted in an absolutist manner
I think this is a very handsome gift and we must hope the Pope or atsome distant date in the future his successor takes the hint Whetherthey will is of course an unknowable matterat the moment
This story reminds me of a plan I had a while ago which was topublish some posts about the history of the tiara and the exampleswhich exist in the Vatican and elsewhere Once I can find some moretime I will do so

My two thoughts when I saw this picture were
1 Speaking as a schoolmaster I would beware the grins on
those faces Ive seen those expressions on the faces of
naughty schoolboy s Those presenting the tiara are say ing
Go on I dare y ou That on the face of His Holiness is
say ing Id rather like to can I get away with it
2 Its interesting that this tiara was presented by a mixed
Catholic and Orthodox group This seems to be a very
strong message from the Orthodox involved We may well
be ready to accept y our primacy and heal the Great
schism But y ouve got to behave like a pope That means
defending the faith And it means preserv ing and
respecting y our own Western traditions because if y ou
cant defend y our own we cant trust y ou with ours
